Took my wife, our son and his wife for dinner. First time for them and they live 3 blocks away. Said they had wanted to try it but had never heard really good things from other friends. To start with it can be noisy. Its a small dining area. If one has issues climbing into tall chairs that are not easy to move once seated as in pulling closer to the table, you will want a booth. Water is provided on arrival. But when waitress was asked for unsweet or sweet tea, they do not have either. Nor soft drinks. Its basically wine or water. The food was OK. Ive had WAY better and Ive had worse. The Gnocee ala Frank Sinatra was less than flavorful. To a point of blandness The Bolognese was probably the star of the table. Though the sauce was a bit runny. Might have been from lack of draining the pasta water. Carbonara was a huge disappointment. Ive wanted really good true carbonara and have not had great luck finding it. Made tableside was an experience but Id rather it be made in the kitchen and be great than tableside and mediocre. Black ground pepper was limited, the cheese overpowering, the egg flavor non existent and the pork was lost in the cheese sauce. The Lobster ravioli was recommended by the waitress. Our DIL seemed to be ok with it. So all in all, its ambiance is a nice place for a date though may have trouble talking over the din of noise. I did not have issue with the prices as others have suggested though portions are small for the price but I expect such prices at what should be upscale Italian food. We will leave it at we've been no need for us to go back with other places we enjoy the food more. read more

What a great spot in Carytown! The food was great and the staff was friendly. It was a nice sized restaurant with not too many people. The drinks were so good! I had a martini, but some of the table shared a bottle of wine. As for pricing, everything was very reasonable considering how large the portions are! Uliveto, Botanya and Sprezza... that is how I would rank these three Italian restaurants I've tried in the last two weeks. Botanya's vibe is great, perfect for a date night, ambience and music, very cute spot, we will totally be back. We came with some friends before The Saved by the 90's concert at The National, which I would nightly recommend if you like 90's music... similar to The Legwarmer's 80's cover band which we also love. The warm bread they provide was not super exciting... but I am partial to crusty breast, they provided olive oil, oregano and salt for dipping. I'll be honest, eating it I was craving Carabba's warm crusty bread with their olive oil and pesto. At any rate, my husband and I started with The Popcorn Fashioned. It was a mini show... they flambéed the slice of orange then put the cup over it to smoke the glass. Then added the pretty ice cube into the glass and poured the liquor into it. I actually really enjoyed it, definitely taste the popcorn. My husband thought it was too sweet, I thought it was hint sweeter than an old fashioned, but I liked it. We ordered the Prosciutto de Parma Croquettes for the table, each order came with four on top of some yummy aioli. We all devoured that. There were six of us... we ordered the duck gnocchi, mushroom torchietti (similar to fusilli pasta), truffled tagliata (steak) and bucatini carbonara. I tried my husband's gnocchi, it was good but lacked flavor... the gnocchi is a little more dense (I really liked Uliveto's pesto gnocchi better more fluffy), and I got the mushroom torchietti (pasta was cooked Al Dente, but I wish I had some more salt and pepper... lacked flavor, but the little pieces of taleggio cheese, imagine melted Brie bites yum! ), our friend that got the steak said it was really good and our other friend that got the bucatini really enjoyed it too (he said it was really peppery, on the spicy side but enjoyed it). We didn't get desserts since we were wanting to get to the concert, but all in all I would be back, I really enjoyed the ambience, much better than Sprezza's very cold and bright white environment. Unfortunately this wasn't a great experience. I've always loved the food here, and specifically made a reservation for the night I had friends in town from DC to show them what the Richmond food scene has to offer. It was 85° outside, and as soon as we walked into the restaurant we felt a heat wave; the AC was broken. Typically I can handle these things, I'm truly not one to complain about the temperature of a restaurant. However, in lightweight jeans and a short sleeved shirt, I was sweating at the table and could not possibly order a heavy, delicious, hot pasta, and eat it while I'm sweating in a room that's probably 80-some degrees. We unfortunately closed our tab after having appetizers and drinks to walk somewhere else to eat dinner. When I asked the waiter if the AC was broken, he said he wasn't sure and that he would ask his manager. The manager happened to come to our table to check on things, and when I asked her if the AC was broken, she said yes and that it had been broken for a couple of days. A couple of days?? Why wouldn't they have warned folks with a sign, or sending them a message after booking a reservation saying their AC unfortunately was broken, but that they were still open? I at least would've worn a lightweight outfit and brought my portable fan. Which brings up another point - if you know your AC is broken, why wouldn't you have a portable AC unit or something to keep your customers and staff cool? The poor bartender was sweating so bad I felt terrible for her, because they were still fairly busy. When we decided to close out, we noticed multiple other tables decided to leave once they realized how hot it was. Overall, yes I will go back because I love the food, but when you know that your AC isn't working and it's the summertime in Richmond in the middle of August, either at least warn your customers, or do a better job of getting it fixed as soon as possible. read more

The restaurant was super cozy in a good way. Loved the look of the place. The food seemed to be hit or miss. We went with four apps and then split two mains. The first app set the tone for the night unfortunately. The two prosciutto croquettes had an odd taste that most closely resembled bleach. It was odd and a weird way to kick off a dining experience. The rest of the apps tasted like you would expect; shrimp in a lemony/garlicky butter sauce, smoked salmon over a whipped cheese with capers on crostini and a burrata dish. Lots of good flavors to dip bread through. The mains were okay, but I wish I had gone another route. The salmon piccata was really good, but the lobster ravioli in a cheesy cream sauce was too rich for my liking. If you're into heavy cheese/cream pastas, you'll be fine. tThe whole dinner took 2 hours since service was kind of slow at times, we elected to order the chocolate tart to go and ate it in the drive home. It was pretty good I must say and I wish I had enjoyed it at the restaurant with a cup of coffee. The rating would have been a 4 if that first app hadn't tasted like cleaning chemicals. read more

So so so DELICIOUS. We went for Valentine's Day and the restaurant was gorgeous and very botanical. Our server was amazing and very knowledgeable about the menu and gave gentle suggestions about what we should get. We split the shrimp balls as our appetizer and they were amazing with a very savory cream sauce. For entrees we had the short rib ravioli and chicken cordon blue. The pasta was the perfect amount and the crispy squash pieces were fantastic touch. The cordon blue was well received and devoured as well. We skipped dessert but our overall favorite were two cocktails we shared. The popcorn bourbon was so smooth and the jalapeño mint cocktail was refreshing. Will definitely be going again. read more

Visited Botanya with a colleague for a 4pm happy hour on a Wednesday. It was pretty empty, I'm guessing because of the day & time. Its definitely an "instagrammable" place, the interior is very pretty and full of photo ops. By lucky that didn't take away from everything else. We got amazing service from our waitress. She not only recommended dishes, she knew all the details about how things were made & the flavor profiles. I ordered fettuccine Alfredo with chicken. I will say the chicken was a little overcooked -- but even still the dish was just delicious. Everything was fresh. After driving past this place for awhile we decided to have dinner here. The space is filled with warm colors of brown and green. It is botanical chic with live plants everywhere. Full bar offering alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks. Live jazz on Tuesday night. On street parking because it is Carytown. Here is why this place got one star: - there was a bug on my dessert and upon bringing it to my server's attention she responded with an apathetic dry Sorry. We were not charged for the dessert but service oriented restaurants would comp the meal at this point. We intended to take our entrees for carryout but due to the bland flavorless fussli and seafood pasta we decided not to take anything home because seeing bugs on your food kills any and all of your appetite - food runners speak no english - hostess wiped crumbs over my lap in between courses If you decide to eat here irrespective of what I said, order the kale salad and Brussel sprouts they were the beat dishes. We paid the $118 bill including the automatic gratuity. We will not be back. read more

Botanya is a beautiful restaurant and my friends and I had a great time! We wanted a relaxing spot to catch up while we ate and that's exactly what we got. The cocktails were delicious - I got sangria and my friend got the drink in the picture that had mezcal in it. The housemade bread and beans that were brought out at the start were delicious. My reason for 4 stars was that my vegetable paella was a little bland. My friend got the short ribs and I wish I'd gotten that instead. I'm not one to order a lot of red meat but I tried a bite and it was cooked perfectly. Everything else in the restaurant was done well - our server was really friendly and helpful - she suggested the short rib that my friend got and i should have listened to her. It is expensive so I won't be going all the time but I'm sure I'll be back for a date night or a night out with some friends. read more

Gave this relatively newly opened restaurant on Cary a try! Enjoyed the environment and the overall dining experience; however their food definitely has potential to be even better. I didn't realize it was on the more expensive side but the restaurant is known to have European influences, mostly Spanish. We were advised to pick and share four different dishes, one from each category, one after the other. My friend and I decided to only try dishes that actually interested us and we got 2 from the Aperitivos y Antipasti section and 2 Primi, which turned out to be a good amount of food for us! -Bucatini - Loved tasty lobster sauce and the calamari/shrimp pieces! The texture of the pasta was a little inconsistent. Some were al dente, some were definitely undercooked unfortunately. -Lumache - Shell pasta with lots of Italian sausage and its spices. The menu said there would be wild mushrooms but it seemed to only be shiitake mushroom in different cuts instead. The extra scoop of butter on top which I now realized was the mascarpone pan sauce didn't really add to the dish in my opinion. -Brussel sprouts - I was surprised how generous they were with the portion but I loved how they were crispy on the outside! I think it was a little salty overall but still enjoyed these veggies! -Barbabietola - I would have liked a higher ricotta cheese to beet ratio. The toast unfortunately was a little too hard/toasted for me so it kinda made each bite a little dry. -Gnocchi - This dessert dish was the highlight of the meal!! The interesting gnocchi texture was in between a mochi and potato mash. This gnocchi is made out of ube and sweet potato; the flavors from the latter definitely came through and wasn't too sweet. These gnocchi were submerged in this ice cream and coffee sauce mixture which gave it a really nice temperature contrast. Consistent with its name, there were lots of plants and greenery around the restaurant. Loved the wooden table tops with velvet seats. The dim lights and the bar area indeed set the mood for a more upscale experience. Our servers were nice, checked in on us, and answered a lot of our questions. To be honest, a little disappointing, especially because we had such high hopes. While the ambiance and decor is beautiful inside and out, there was quite loud live music playing inside - the musician was amazing! - but it was hard to have conversations / hear each other. However, this was the LEAST of our worries, because the food was the really disappointing part. For a restaurant whose name means "Botanical" and emphasizes plants and natural living, there is not a single vegetarian Secondi / main course option on the entire menu. Even the Mushroom Paella is cooked in meat broth! That was our first sign that something was amiss. We ordered several dishes - here are the items in order from top to bottom. Keep in mind, even our #1 was probably a 7/10 at best. 1) Ube Potato Croquettes (Croquetas Morada) - small portion, but very unique flavor and enjoyed the crispy on the outside soft on the inside texture. 2) Brussels Sprouts (Coles de Bruselas) - these were good! Well made and enjoyed the creme fraiche in the dish very much. 3) Roasted Carrots (Zanahoria) - enjoyed the crunchy yet cooked well texture, and particularly enjoyed the sauces on the plate 4) Bolognese Verdura Pasta (Torchietti) - this is where things really started to go downhill. This was a weird texture and almost tasted a little like grass? Portion was SO small for the price. 5) Patatas Bravas - these were fine, standard crispy potatoes. Needed lotsss more of the drizzled orange sauce to taste good. Kinda bland. 6) Fettucine Tableside - literally was SO upset by this dish. They said the cheese wheel cost $600 and it still tasted bad? Pasta was blah, the sauce did NOT get nice and creamy as you would expect (was in fact clumpy and kind of cold). AND the restaurant's pepper grinder was broken (did they only have 1 for the whole restaurant?) so they couldn't add any more pepper (a clearly stated ingredient on the menu) to our preparation. So weird. 7) Roasted Beets + Ricotta Toast - Literally should not have ordered this. So unappetizing - beets kept falling off the toast, which itself was like biting into a rock. And, to top it all off, this place is insanely expensive. Very disappointing and will not recommend Botanya to anyone. It gets 2 stars instead of 1 because our server was fantastic, accommodating, kind, and fun. read more

Service sucked!!!! Ok food but no refills on water waitress was rude not a great way to spend $100 plus

First time here. I made a reservation to surprise my husband for our 16th wedding anniversary. The place looked great when I looked it up online and the food looked even better! Got there 3 minutes before our reservation and the place was booked solid. A couple was in front of us and one couple behind us in line at the hostage stand. They asked the couple in front to move to the side while they got their table ready. They asked if we had a reservation and I gave them my name. "Yes, I see. We don't have a table yet for your "reservation". Huh? But I made a reservation. They asked us to move aside and they'd get a table soon. We saw a table of two get up so we were excited even tho they didn't know how to "KEEP" a reservation; only knew how to "TAKE" a reservation. THEN the couple behind us Was waved to the table. Huh? It took about 10 more minutes of us standing there in shock reciting a Seinfeld episode, when someone finally came over to ask if we'd like to sit at the bar and have a drink while we wait. Um, ok. Had a drink 35 minutes later, we have a table. Yay. We order, wait time for food and more drinks takes awhile. Food comes out and my Salmon Picatta's sauce was completely broken so it was just swimming in melted butter. Swimming. No lemon no capers... my husband's steak looked grey like it was boiled and had zero flavor. A table next to us had a birthday and staff came out with a dessert and candles. The party sang. We were never offered any drink comps for our wait, no dessert's on us, for our wait. No one mentioned our anniversary again and there was no personality with wait staff, no eye contact. Super boring. We will not be back. We have a group of very foody friends that we eat out with all the time and spend hundreds of dollars for a fantastic feasting experience. All I can say is that I'm glad we went first so we'll all know which restaurant to avoid!!! read more

4/1/2023 A lovely ambiance and vibe in this fairly new spot in Carytown. Our server Felix was very attentive...thank you Felix! Now for the food.. The focaccia served was lovely but the beans it was served with were just so salty!! That should have come with a warning. Now for the food we ordered.. the Croquettas Morada were delightful! A yummy bite of yumminess! The Zanahoria got a mixed review.. flavor profile was on point especially with the mojo verde, but the ricotta salatae was invisible. The tableside fettuccine was a lovely presentation but after the show was over we found our noodles had become quite cold...delicious.. but cold. The Brussels sprouts were tasty but again, we were overwhelmed by the over-the-top saltiness. Finished off with desserts to get control of our overwhelmed palates.. both desserts were lovely. So...although disappointing,there are minor improvements that can elevate a return experience significantly. My party would like to return and try some of the other dishes but will be very specific next time to request lowering the saltiness and upping the temperature. I would also advocate for service to be more knowledgeable about the dishes, ingredients, and preparation methods. read more

**Kind of long Botanya is a super cute new restaurant in Carytown with an intimate but lively atmosphere. First thing I noticed was the music jazz covers of popular songs playing in the background.. love. When I walked in ten mins before my reservation no one was at the hostess stand but I noticed majority of the employees were gathered in the bar area .. they would look at me from a distance but no one came to greet me for at least 5 mins..eventually the guy who would turn out to be my server came to seat me! Weird. I also had to ask for menus as they were not given to us or placed on the table. FYI the menu has seemed to change a couple of times since opening, items I've seen posted here were not on the menu at my visit! For drinks, my group all ordered something different from the cocktail list. None of them were anything to write home about however the popcorn old fashioned was something like I've never seen before!! While the presentation was cool and the taste wasn't bad the whole popcorn in an ice cube ?! Not well thought through. My friend had popcorn particles floating through her drink throughout the night that continued to make us LOL. On to the appetizers, we ordered the tuna &cannelini and two orders of the croquettes that were recommended by our server. Tuna app was bland and left much to be desired. The croquettes were pretty tasty HOWEVER (this is where it gets funny) as I was eating I noticed the absence of the prosciutto. I asked our server about it and he had us cut through both plates of them to show him (literally non existent) and he confirmed so he decided to take them back to have them remade which was nice but y'all..5 mins later he came back with the same two plates of croquettes he had us mash up and the manager who gave us some spiel on how they were made which again didn't explain the non existence of the prosciutto! They had us mash them up to prove there was no prosciutto took it to the back to examine and brought it back cold and mashed up.. we were annoyed but didn't want to be difficult so we sucked it up -_- For entrees we had an order of the carbonara, truffle tagliata, scampi Al limone, and fusili alla bolognese. While they weren't bad we all agreed our meals were lacking a bit in overall flavor. And as a group that included a Jamaican, Ethiopian, and Ecuadorian I like to think we know a little something about flavor :) keeping salt and pepper on the table wouldn't hurt! For dessert we decided to split the tiramisu which was delicious! I wish I had got a pic but it is no longer served in the martini glass that I saw pictured here. Definitely shareable and worth it! Went here on Valentine's Day and had a bad experience. Would not recommend to anyone. We had to flag down our waitress for everything we wanted. The chicken carbonara was very disappointing and our food took over an hour to come out. No one said anything about our inconvenience or asked if we wanted refills on any drinks. Our first round of drinks took 20 minutes to come out after they were forgotten. I came to Botyana for the first time the other night. I was really excited to try a new restaurant with great pasta choices. I was so glad that carbonara was on the menu as it is on of my favorites. We started with the croquettes, which were really good and great for sharing. I ordered the carbonara of course, which is supposed to be made table-side, but since we sat on the patio it could not be :(. I honestly wasn't really impressed with it. I felt that it lacked flavor. My friend also ordered it, but she actually got brought out Alfredo. She didn't say anything, but she also agreed that it was just okay and was lacking flavor. My other friend got the spaghetti, I tasted hers and I actually thought it was pretty good! I wish I would have ordered that instead. I will say, our server was great and the ambiance was very cute. Took myself on a "me date" to celebrate the closing of a show and decided to finally try Botanya which I have been wanting to check out since their opening. The space is gorgeous and very insta worthy and all the patrons looked super glam and their for those pics! I sat at the bar and was quickly greeted by the Sarah, very kind and gracious bartender. She went over some favorites on the menu and started making me a popcorn old fashion which was quite theatrical in production and presentation. The flavor profile was interesting, the buttery popcorn added notes of butterscotch to the bourbon but overall was too sweet for me. The blackberry Negroni definitely hit better though again it was pretty sweet and not something I could have more than one of. I ordered the carbonaro which is supposed to be prepared table side but since I was at the bar I opted to have it prepared in the kitchen which shaved off 6 bucks from the hefty $28 price tag. I also asked for a side salad and was gently pushed to get the cesear salad which was giant but $2 more than a regular side salad. Now I'm not one to complain about price tags as I am down for paying for amazing food. However, I was severely underwhelmed. The salad was presented with globs of dressing instead of mixed in. All I tasted was mayonnaise and not even a hint of anchovy. The lardons were the only redeeming qualities. Which is kind of ironic as they should have also been in the Carbonaro but there were only like two pieces. Speaking of...this was not traditional Carbonara at all. It's really more like Alfredo sauce. I do not hide the fact that I'm a total Italian food snob. And if I'm eating carbs I want my pasta fresh. I'm fairly certain the pasta was from a box even though they state everything is homemade. And the noodles were swimming in sauce instead of the slight coating of a traditional carbonara. And don't get me started about the lack of peas!! Like many others have stated, this is a place for drinks, to see and be seen, and for those insta/tik tok reels not for actual decent food. Drinks were good, took forever to get to us even though we could see them just waiting at the bar. The food was pretty bad. Our paella looked like it had sat out forever under a heat lap, not flavorful at all, and mediocre. I dont know how sausage could not have any flavor but they managed it. Got sucked in by the tableside carbonara in a parmesan wheel but will not go back. The actual vibes of Botanya are immaculate, but the tables are so close together and everyone could hear everyone's conversation. Went at 6:30 which seemed to be a busy time, so it took about 15 minutes before our drinks and appetizer orders were taken. Appetizers came before drinks, and also observed the bartender using her bare hands to put garnishes in drinks. Food took about another hour and a table who got seated after got served first. We could hear the man doing the tableside carbonara complain about the amount of times he had to do it too, which I understand but wished they waited until they were in the kitchen. When we got our food it was hot, but it was disappointingly small clams and overcooked muscles. The big positive was our waitress who was super apologetic about the wait and brought us both shots and a cake slice for our anniversary. Went from 2 stars to 3 because of this. First timer! My experience was excellent. A friend and I found this place on TikTok. Our cocktails and food were superb. I got the spice sangria which was great for the weather and my friend got the popcorn fashion with a show lol. "This could not have been more divinely inspired," Mr. RVA reflected, seated upon the plush booth of his latest dining discovery. Carytown was bustling this evening; the community alive with the greeting of Spring's arrival. And yet, while the city streets outside filled with passerbys, inside a rainforest like canopy embraced loving patrons. "Fresh and Elegant" came to mind as beautiful houseplants dressed the four corners of the establishment, mirroring the Monstera Deliciosa, Alocasia x Amazonica, and Chlorophytum Comosum embellished mural. Golden utensils adorned white table tops accenting platos de pan verde. Could it be, the color scheme of a future wedding on the horizon? Hmmm... Laughter and the gentle buzz of conversation filled the air while Papik crooned "Ancora Tu." This smooth, fledgling spot opened it's doors in December of last year, with one goal in mind; carefully crafted Italian cuisine fused with Spanish influences. Didn't have a reservation but they graciously seated is outside. However another group seated after us were brought water ahead of us then we watched the same person bring us cups from a table that hadn't been cleared.. He said they were clean but we saw him through the window. We walked out. read more

Where to begin...my husband and I are celebrating our 2nd wedding anniversary this weekend and I went on the hunt for the perfect place to celebrate a month ago. Botanya enters the chat. I KNEW after looking at the menu that I was going to do the tableside carbonara because who doesn't want fresh pasta out of a cheese wheel?! When we walked in and said we had made a reservation, the lovely hostess made sure to tell us happy anniversary! I had put that down in the notes when I made the reservation, but the acknowledgment is always appreciated. I knew we were in for a treat! We started off with their Peanut butter banana and jelly & caramelized passion mezcal cocktails and they were SOOOOOO delicious. I've been bartending for almost 15 years and these were expertly crafted cocktails. As our appetizer we went with the prosciutto croquettes...again, perfection. The saffron aioli was a perfect complement to these perfectly prepared potato prizes. Then we get to the entrees...the tableside carbonara was chef's kiss out of this world. Prepared in an 18 month old wheel of pecorino Romano, the creaminess and saltiness was so well balanced with the fresh pasta, I will absolutely order it again. My husband's gnocchi alla vodka hit all the right spots for him. Don't be deceived by the plating...the bowl in the dish is much deeper! We both have some leftovers so we can enjoy it all again later. The only thing not pictured is my espresso martini because it lasted all of 2.3 seconds. It was...you guessed it...perfect. We didn't save any room for the tiramisu, but we will be back for it all and make sure we get it next time because it looked divine. Okay, enough about the phenomenal food and drinks...I firmly believe that the total experience and service is equally as important when dining out. We went there as a large group yesterday. For drinks, the server was trying to sell us on getting a bottle of wine, but we all had different tastes so decided to go with cocktails. Cocktails were very small but good. I had Ananas Scuro and that was good. My partner's martini was good too but we could smell fish in the drink. At the table, they left focaccia bread and beans and both were not great. Focaccio was tough and beans smoked and did not smell good. We are vegetarians so got a few pasta. Personally, I did not like the taste of any of them, and the Fettuccini was very salty. The service was really bad. The server messed up our tapas order and then to top it she tried to pin it on us. She brought the wrong drink for my son. She did not split the check, nor did she ask us if we wanted to split the check (we were 4 families in the group). Ambience was nice. Restaurant was very pricy for the food they serve. read more

My wife, daughter and I had an early dinner here. The service was FANTASTIC! Prompt, courteous and informed. We had a series of appetizers. All of them were AWESOME! We sat by the front window and were able to enjoy Cary Street. The atmosphere was EXCELLENT. read more
