More like 3 1/2 stars Having to stop by this mall before going to a show at Segerstom my wife and I wanted a quick bite to eat and selected Boudin SF. So what did we think? Well, we had a special Wedge Salad, the soup of the day which was Roasted Tomato and I had a sandwich. The Wedge and the soup were outstanding!!! My sandwich which was a brie and turkey was ok, of course the bread was fantastic. I would like to have had the cheese slightly melted and warm to go better with the sandwich. Our order is as follows: His- Broccoli & Cheddar (Tuesday's Soup of the Day) + Turkey & Havarti Cheese Sandwich and added a bread bowl for the soup (+$1) Hers- Clam Chowder + Turkey & Avocado Sandwich ------------------------------------------------ The sandwiches are tasty and come on sourdough bread. They give you a big dollop of mayo, so if you don't like... let them know ahead of time so you don't have to scrape it off. Our visit didn't start too well. I ordered on the self serve screen at the front counter. That all went smoothly, but then we waited for our food much longer than anyone else around us. I think they actually forgot about us. I can't tell you how surprised we were when we were about ready to leave. I hadn't been here in quite some time. As you can see from my previous reviews, I had some less than satisfactory experiences the last few times I had eaten or ordered here. I was at the Metro Pointe center shopping with a family member around lunch time and we decided to stop in and get a bite to eat. There was a line, but it wasn't too long. The restaurant itself seemed a bit dirty and like it could have been cleaned a little more. Began my order with a fountain drink and found out that the price of a fountain drink was $3. Seriously? $3 for one plastic cup with a disgusting paper straw? So $6 for 2 fountain drinks..........we both looked at the prices of the menu and ended up ordering a bakery item to split. Went to the fountain drink dispenser to fill up our overpriced plastic cups - the diet coke was leaking all over the place. Went to fill up my cup with diet coke and ended up with diet coke all over my hand and side of my cup. The countertop where the fountain drink dispenser was had puddles of spilled drinks and water all over the place. There were no napkins in sight, so I had to let my cup and my hand drip dry! I wish I had brought my own straw because the paper straws they have are completely disgusting - they disintegrate in your drink and collapse in the center where you punch the straw through the plastic lid. The cost of their food has dramatically increased to the point where I cannot justify spending this amount of money on breads and salads. The food is good, which makes it a shame. For the prices they are now charging, I'd expect the restaurant to be clean and the fountain drink dispenser to not be leaking all over the place! read more

Communicating this to staff was difficult due to a language disconnect so had to return to counter. Potato wedges came back warm, but there was literally 10 of them?? Really?? At that price! French dip had two slices of green old meat, inside a buff hard sourdough baguette with a side salad that was literally two bites. It was so small it was actually kinda cute, and the tuna... my gosh. I'm so happy that this SF staple is down in the OC area! It's so good that they have two locations very very close to each other. Most people tend to get the clam chowder and bread bowl. This is practically a good size meal for lunch and you'll enjoy the flavor and taste of the bread. Came here for lunch on a rainy day and it was packed so packed that people were also sitting outside and eating in the rain! As we ordered our food I wanted to try a different soup than the usual and god tomato to check it out. I opted for no bread bowl which they than subtract $1.00 from. Got a toasted chicken club to share and that was a hot sandwich for a cold day. Tasted delicious!! The thing with ordering a soup and a sandwich is you need to share it with others to finish the meal. Overall had a fun experience here and can't wait to come back and try other things on the menu! I have been coming to this location for years, always overlooked how dirty the place is because I enjoy their soups in a bread bowl. Well last week was the straw that broke my streak! I walk in on a slow week day. Two females are working the foh. I look around and of course there's a lot of dirty tables that need to be bussed as per usual. I order three bread bowls to go and ask the cashier to have them cut out the center, she tells me no problem we can do that. I wait...wait...wait, mins you it's not busy at all. The female working the expo part is wearing blue gloves to handle the food which is great. Then she buses tables, clears off the dirty plates from above the trash can while still wearing the same blue gloves. Wipes down the counter and other areas all the while still wearing the same gloves. Comes back to expo area handles some more food items , oh yeah she's still wearing the same dirty gloves by the way. And the three bread bowls I ordered, yua I'm still waiting on them. Same person with the dirty gloves picks up the bread, places them in the slicer and slices away at the bread I wanted to be cut out in the middle. I approached her before she sliced away at the last bread and she doesn't apologize or anything. I'm so disgusted at the way this store trains their employees. I it was very disappointing as a first time customer. The patty melt was overcooked, unseasoned, the bread was more like cheese toast instead gooey melted cheese like a normal patty melt. The meat only took up half the bread so the ratio was way off. The onions were not carmelized and there wasnt many. The clam chowder under seasoned and not all the potatoes were cooked. They really do have the best lactobacillus san francisco you could ask for! By that I mean it's the strain of bacteria that's found inside their delicious sourdough bread! I was kinda stoked to see that they were selling some baked goodies wile we waited to order. That just means I will be back at one point to bring some loaves home when I need some sourdough! The cashier we encountered had a really hard time deciphering the difference in change of a $50 vs a $100 and wasn't the nicest to Dia when she pointed out to her that she was wrong. But at least all the other staff members were nice and helpful to us during our vist. The chicken sandwich I had was delicious and went well with their delicious sourdough goodness. No need to go all the way to San Francisco to try the famous Boudin Bakery because there is location right by South Coast Plaza! I, myself, didn't know about this location until recently when I came with some friends for a lunch out before going to the OC Fair. My fellow Yelper and good friend Jamie A. planned the lunch here (thanks Jamie A!) The menu has a great selection of various soups and sandwiches and i decided to try the best of both worlds by ordering a Boudin SF combo. I got a half chicken pesto sandwich and a bowl of butternut squash. The butternut squash was excellent! it's a vegetarian soup. It's great in texture and really creamy. It has a distinct and delicious squash flavor. The soup in itself is four to five star worthy. The sandwich however was a bit of a disappointment. The sandwich itself was pretty small even for half a sandwich. The fillings were alright and the chicken itself was decent but the main sandwich bread was super hard! It was so hard that it was a pain to bite! I was surprised at how hard the bread was considering Boudin is famous for their bakery goods. I think if i were to go back, I will stick with the soups! My husband ordered the California burger and I got the chili bread bowl. The chili was greasy and did not taste fresh. Honestly, the canned stuff you get at the supermarket is better. I went against my judgment and ordered The Purist Avocado Toast which is an absurd $8.35. What they gave me was gross (see photo). They don't even use a smashed avocado as they claim, clearly they just use the guacamole spread they put on sandwiches instead. Definitely false advertising and shame on Boudin for passing this off for that price. I work near here so visit often due to convenience. About 50% of the time my order will be slightly wrong. For example if I get a soup that comes with cheddar cheese topping, I'll get onions instead. The food is overpriced. The location is poorly run with poor line management. The cashier's are miserable and impersonal and that visibly rubs off on the customer. This location is also deteriorating and needs upkeep as it can smell musty and old. This bakery and cafe shop is pretty chill and it has a cool ambiance. I can dig that. There are some neat baked goods on display and the sales staff is friendly. It's clean and well organized. But the food is just OK, nothing great or special here. I ordered the Tomato Basil Garlic pizza which is made fresh in their little oven and it's the perfect personal sized pizza on sourdough bread. My friend got the Waldorf salad. My pizza was mediocre. I did like the mix of flavors but I almost wish it had more cheese. The cheese was scarce and lightly sprinkled on top. The rest of it was overwhelmed with basil and tomato. The Waldorf salad on the other hand came in an ample serving fit for two. The ingredients were fresh but the honey mustard dressing didn't quite compliment the salad. The salad itself is sweet and the dressing was overwhelmingly spicy and didn't balance well with the flavors captured in this salad. We both ordered iced teas and sampled the two flavors that Boudin Bakery had to offer - a tropical and the China Black tea. Both were mild with flavor and tasted watered down. I could hardly pick up on any flavor and wish I had opted for a soft drink or water instead. I've been a fan of Boudins since the first time I went there in 99. I went to the one on Pier 39 in S.F. and I was blown away by their clam chowder in the bread bowl. It seemed to be their most popular dish. Now I really love the Brie and Apple grilled cheese sandwich. The added jelly on the sandwich jelly is bomb! My only complaint about this location is that every table outside was dirty and needed to be cleaned down. There was also food and napkins around on the ground so they really need to work on keeping it cleaner outside. Inside the A/C was on full blast, which I liked, but not everyone in my party was happy about that. It wasn't just low but extremely low so I could see how some people would find it chilly. read more

I love this place and used to come here a lot, but t he manager's behavior was not okay. She also overcharged the food I was ordering, the food plus the salad cost $27 and I just need 3 more dollars to complete the payment but she charged me extra $14 which I found ridiculous. Keep in mind I already paid 25 dollars for the food and plus the salad so it costs $27, basically she charged me extra $39 dollars. After realizing she overcharged me, instead of apologizing she rudely threw my money towards me and looked at me with an angry look like she didn't want to work here. That's very unacceptable behavior for a manager, even if your in a bad mood that doesn't give you a right to mistreat a paying customer like that. What sounded good, some sandwich with brie, was eh. Strike three was this past weekend. Again, a huge line out the door and ONE person on the register. How can you have one person working a register on a weekend at lunch time?? Since I was just getting coffee and dessert for our group, I jumped over to the self-service kiosk. Strike four was the coffee!! It was lukewarm at best and tasted worse than coffee that's been sitting in a pot from yesterday. My mistake for not saying, "you're out!", after strike three. YAY, I am a fan! First time into THIS Boudin SF. Guess they are all the same, so I will have to try the one in Irvine on Main St. too. SO, for my review on THIS point. Ordered the Clam Chowder in a Bread Bowl. Served hot and brought to my table in less than 5 minutes. It comes with butter to spread on the top portion of the bread that was cut out to make room for the soup. Great bread, sourdough. Great soup, clam chowder that had MORE clams than potatoes, YAY about time. The manager, Eric, suggested I sign up for the Frequent Buyer program. I downloaded the app, created an account, got credit for today's purchase, and received a free loaf of sourdough bread (worth $4.19). Great atmosphere, clean, smiles on the staff, helpful staff, and did I say clean? Coming back for the specials that occur for 4-5 weeks at a time. Specials this month are Chicken Pot Pie and Beef Stew, both served in a bread bowl. End 03/28/2018. Next month specials will be salads and sandwiches. We will see, I mean eat. 2 weeks after I have come here and all I can think of when I write my review is not the food, but the great service! I cannot express just how MUCH i appreciate great service! This Boudins is located in the same plaza as the Nordstrom Rack across the street from South Coast Plaza mall. There is plenty of parking here. Andrew D. and i both decided on getting the soup bread bowls and try it out for our first time. I got the chicken pot pie and Andrew D. got the pot roast. I would say that I have had better bread bowl at Corner Bakery. Their soups there are much more richer and bread is less tough as the one here at Boudins. In any event, if you feel the soup is also lacking flavor, grab some Tobasco and some butter and you are good to go. Our server was awesome though. He was efficient, he was friendly, he checked on us often, was polite, happily got us more butter and just made our overall dining experience great. The next time I come back, I'm going to get one of their yummy sandwiches. Although their bread bowls weren't a hit with me, I know their sandwiches and salads will leave my taste buds happy! read more
