    Clam chowder
    Jon R.

Came in, order and self seating, staff were friendly, restaurant/bistro was clean and bright. Sandwich bread was amazing crispy outside and super soft inside. Classic bread bowl with clam chowder. When we come to this area we try to stop by. Good meal for $15 and filling if you get the bread bowl.

Gem Cobb and bread bowl clam chowder

A day of shopping and I needed some comfort food at the end of a cold night. What a perfect combination of soup and salad. I really loved the Jim Cobb salad here with the large bits of real bacon, avocado and blue cheese. I probably did not need the bread bowl for the clam chowder but it's the original way to enjoy it. The combination special of choosing two of your favorites is a great choice. The service was quick and staff were really courteous. You may not be up in San Francisco, but you can have the meal from there here in Costa Mesa. This place is now a favorite on my list!

Asian Citrus Chicken Salad, Clam Chowder in bread bowl
    Tammy D.

Did a stop at Boudin in South Coast, and when it comes to sandwiches, soup, and salad, Boudin always does it for me. My all-time favorite is the Pick Two I usually get the clam chowder in a bread bowl and the Asian salad, but I also have to shout out the grilled cheese and tomato soup Pick Two because that combo is superior. They definitely changed the recipe for the Asian salad recently, but it still has the same essence as the old one just feels a bit more refreshed and modern. I love the sourdough here, although this time around the clam chowder leaned a little more potato-heavy than usual. With Boudin, the chowder can be hit or miss: when it's really good, it's really good, and when it's not, it kind of falls in the middle still okay. I also love their rewards program I always put in my phone number and actually get rewards. Every month you get a free sourdough, and sometimes a few dollars off your order, which is such a nice perk. The service has always been spectacular, and this spot is definitely a staple for us whenever we're out and about or just craving soup, salad, and a sandwich.

Sourdough clam chowder is not too shabby. It isn't the best clam chowder, but the sourdough is fresh and tasty. Sandwiches are also great, and the fresh bread makes a difference. Service is friendly and they move quickly. Open environment with plenty of window seating to enjoy the passerby shoppers.

Stopped in while son and friends were up the street. Was craving clam chowder so not a lot of options. Been here before and it's fine and pricing is about what you'd pay elsewhere for meal and drink. It's not amazing but flavorful enough and with the bread bowl, definitely filling. You can order from kiosk or at counter. Menu had a nice variety and some desserts I hadn't seen before. I'd come back in a cold day for soup here after shopping. Seating inside is basic and restaurant was fairly quiet.

Well we absolutely love Sourdough and when in Nor Cal Boudin is an obligatory must have. Reality So Cal isn't the same experience. Service was good pretty very rudimentary. Not RUDE at all. Just basic. I order via Kiosk take a number and out comes my meal delivered to the table. Sourdough bowl chowder is ok had large chunks and a tasty base. Bread was a little chewy. Salad again was Ok. Location is busy and could use a deep clean and some upgrades. After all it's OC so might need to step it up. Highly recommend the turkey cranberry sandwich.

9/2025 the best fries ever (street fries)

I've been missing out! I thought this was just another "deli-style fast food place and definitely did not expect to enjoy it as much as I had on a recent visit. Very unexpected!!! And so delicious!! Their street fries is fantastic: so crispy, airy fries, it was served hot and savory with their toppings. Texture and flavors are definitely my favorite here. We also tried their crispy chicken sandwich and a pepperoni pizza. The peach shake was another sweet surprise and one I'd definitely revisit to enjoy before it leaves their menu for the season. But, back to that chicken sandwich. The slaw and jalapeños on the chicken sandwich was unique and added a very tasty flavor. The bread/bun was the perfect pillowy and chewy goodness to complement the chicken and slaw. Beyond happy with everything we had ordered. I'll actually be back sooner than later to try more of their menu: French dip; tuna melt; coup in a bread bowl too of course- and that strawberry shake too!

    Vegan Catalan

I used to love coming here when I was vegetarian. Haven't been in a while and saw they had these wonderful vegan options on the menu. I definitely would come back. I enjoyed both items. This location can be a little crowded and there wasn't anywhere for us to sit for a bit, but we did finally find a table that opened up. So glad they have vegan sandwich and salad options now I used to absolutely love coming here. I wish they would offer a vegan soup as well so you could do the soup salad combo.

The clam chowder looks a little small for the price, but it's yummy and surprisingly filling...if you eat the bread too
    Patrick ..

The Context: When one thinks of clam chowder, it's hard not to picture Boudin and its bread bowls and ornately bakery items shaped like turtles and alligators. The Food: Naturally I ordered the clam chowder in a bread bowl while my wife got the Southwestern chicken salad. The clam chowder serving seemed small at first, but I was satisfied by the end after eating part of most of the bowl's "lid." The salad came in a huge ceramic bowl -- definitely a plus. The Taste: For store-bought clam chowder on the West Coast, it's hard to beat Boudin. It's always consistent and always satisfying. Meanwhile, the salad was quite good. The crispy chicken was moist and flavorful, the avocado fresh and buttery, and the seeds, leaves, and tomatoes were all fresh. The Price: It's definitely not cheap, but the $15+ I paid for the salad was made less painful by the fact that the portion was huge. I was expecting a tiny bowl and like 3 pieces of chicken. Happy to report that Boudin did not cheap out. And while I was hoping for more soup for what we paid for the claw chowder, it's delicious enough to buy again on occasion. The Conclusion: It's a little overpriced, but it's good enough that we'll be back to try the other dishes and soups.

Dungeness crab mac and cheese and open-faced crab melt
    Raven R.

Came here for their seasonal crab menu. The place is clean and well-maintained. The staff is not the most efficient but it seems like they are understaffed and doing the best they can. If you sign up for their rewards program, you get a free sourdough loaf monthly with a dollar purchase. I ordered their pick a pair deal and got their dungeness crab mac and cheese and open faced crab melt. Dungeness crab mac and cheese- It comes with a creamy sauce. They give a generous amount of crab and it works well with the mildness of the cheese sauce. The macaroni is nice and tender and the dish is finished with parsley. Open-faced crab melt- Served on a crispy soardough toast. They give you a good portion of the crab salad so there's plenty to go with every bite. The dressing has a nice sweetness to it. Finished with melted cheese that tied the flavors together. Great meal overall!

Bread bowl is great to fill up with peanuts for squirrels.

This is a great place for soups and sandwiches. I have ordered to go here a few times and the food has always been great- fresh and healthy. My favorite is the butternut squash and half short rib melt combo. I've also gotten the half rainbow grain bowl salad and half home style Mac n cheese as well as the beef chilli which is great with tortilla chips. When ordering to go, they provide a couple of butter packets which is nice. Usually when I order the soup to go, it comes in a cup. I was very much surprised when it came with a roll in addition to a bread bowl the last time I ordered for pickup. I wasn't able to finish the bread bowl and decided to finish it another day. It turned out to be super hard and I wasn't able to eat it so I left it outside and filled it with peanuts for the squirrels that visits me.

Haiku: Boudin SF Rich in tradition Freshly baked sourdough bread Still use Mother Dough. --- I've only bought their freshly baked sourdough dough bread loaves & it's heavenly. Its fluffy and soft interior, with a perfectly-colored crusty exterior, is music to my ears (& belly). Thanks to their rich tradition of still incorporating the Mother Dough, Boudin has mastered the baking technique with the perfect tangy sourdough taste. I'm a loyal and forever customer. They also sell fun shaped-breads throughout the year. You can buy baby turtles and turkey & trees during the holidays. Just note, the large holiday breads like the turkey or feast pull-apart-rolls are pre-order only. Tip: Order online for convenient pick-up in store. Next time I'll have to try their food.

When we ordered the cinnamon roll, there was no option to heat it up, so we thought they would have done it already. When it was served, it was rock solid. So, we asked them to heat it up. However, after a few minutes, it still wasn't that gooey and the inner core was still pretty tough. Perhaps they could have warmed it up so that it was evenly softened. Overall, the cinnamon roll was alright. It was a brioche roll so you would think it might be lighter and fluffy, but ours was pretty dry. However, the cream on top was insanely good. It carried the roll. The hazelnut twist was kind of what you would expect. A twisted pastry but with a hefty amount of hazelnut-chocolate spread thru the layers. We sat in a little nook, where there was a magnetic black board, where there were word tiles you could rearrange in any way. It was a nice place to just look around at all the sentences the community wrote. Chess tables were also available as extra seating. Overall, the service was good, but could be better when warming up pastries, so that the customer can enjoy them properly!

This last visit was unfortunately very different. We came in with a fairly large party, and we completely understood that accommodating a group our size is a lot of work. When we got in line, the employee asked how many people were in our party, which made sense. However, we were then told that we could not all pay separately. This was confusing because payment is taken before you even sit down, so it's not like we were trying to split a bill afterward. Rather than make a fuss, we combined everyone's orders onto one card, totaling around $400. The food and drinks came out fairly quickly, which we appreciated. The reason I felt compelled to write this review, though, was because of how rude one particular employee was during the experience. She was wearing patriotic cat ears and appeared to be one of the baristas. One of my friends ordered a latte with alternative milk, but it seems the order may have been entered incorrectly. I've worked in the coffee industry myself, so I understand mistakes happen all the time, and remaking a drink is usually not a huge issue. Instead of handling it kindly, the employee responded with, "That's how it was put in, the request time has passed, that's our policy," in an incredibly dismissive and rude tone. We were honestly stunned. My friend, visibly uncomfortable, just quietly said "Okay," and the employee walked away. Nothing was offered to make the situation right. This happened after we had already spent hundreds of dollars and tipped before even being served. I'm not someone who enjoys complaining or writing negative reviews, but the interaction completely changed the experience for our entire group. What's most disappointing is that the refusal itself wasn't even the main issue, it was the attitude and apparent enjoyment in being dismissive over a very small and understandable mistake. I'm writing this mostly out of disappointment because I truly loved this place. I also think it's important for larger parties to know ahead of time that there appears to be a policy limiting payment methods, even though I've personally visited before with smaller groups where separate payments were allowed. I genuinely hope this was just an off day, because Eller Bakery has been a place I've loved supporting for a long time.

They have other items on their menu too that I'm excited to try next time I come here. There was a decent line when I came here, but the wait wasn't long. I noticed a lot of people who came here buy in bulk, which was very interesting. It made me wondered if these churros are good when reheated. I only got the smallest order since I wanted to try them fresh, but I might order more next time to see how they reheat. The location itself is inside the Northgate Market, which is very nice. It's nice to go shopping and treat oneself to some fresh churros. The parking lot is also very big so no issues with parking. Highly recommend this place, I'll definitely be back here again.

As someone who has spent years going to the churro truck on Lorena and Whittier in Boyle Heights, I was eager to see how it compared. Unfortunately, I left extremely disappointed. The churro itself was bland and lacked the flavor and warmth that make a great churro memorable. While I understand the vegan approach, the churro, being the star seemed to rely entirely on the dipping sauces for flavor. The star of the experience should be the churro itself...not the dip. The traditional cinnamon and sugar flavor that most people associate with an authentic churro was simply missing. The recipe may come from tradition, but the execution falls short of delivering the authentic experience it promises. In my opinion, the restaurant's popularity is driven more by the appeal of its Mexico City roots and prime location than by the quality of the churros themselves. I wanted to love it. Instead, it felt like a place selling the idea of authenticity rather than delivering it.
