On a cold, wet and miserable day here in Southern California, I decided to try BoudinSF because the thought of a good tomato soup in a bread bowl, with a grilled cheese sandwich sounded just too good to pass up. IT WAS YUM!!!!!! It's easy here to order; just place your order at the counter and they give you a number to put on your table and they bring it out when it's ready. It's very good value, and the food was great. The grilled cheese was one of the best I've ever had, and the soup was delicious inside a tasty bread bowl. It didn't take long to come out - even though they were pretty busy at this time of day - and overall it was a great lunch spot. It seems like their breakfast would be good too, as they have a nice sounding menu, so perhaps next time I'd try a breakfast here. I LOVE BOUDIN! I am obsessed with sourdough bread, so anytime I go to Costa Mesa, I have to go! I decide to do pick a pair because I was really craving a BLT on sourdough bread, so that was definitely what I had to get. Oh! They are known for their clam chowder! So, that was a must - even though it was 88 degrees outside! The bacon was kind of sweet? I don't know if there it's like an applewood or maple bacon? That threw me off, so I wasn't super impressed with the sandwich. Clam chowder, of course, never disappoints! Their grilled cheese is also amazing!!! I also HIGHLY RECOMMENDED to sign up for their reward programs. You get a free loaf of bread every month, as long as you purchase something that month. They also give you a free cookie for your birth month, and when you hit 50 points, you get $3 off! This location honestly feels a little dated and in need of a facelift of sorts. The menu selection is good but a bit pricey. We ordered on the self serve kiosk, it seemed to take much longer than we anticipated and hoped it wound bypassing the long line. I love Boudin sourdough and enjoyed stopping in for a bowl or clam chowder in a sourdough bow while in San Francisco. Saw this location while at the south coast mall. Our family has enjoyed this location twice. I am sure it is current times and hard to fill positions, but it took a while to clean tables and keep up on bathroom supplies. Our second trip had a few menu items they ran out of due to supplies and busy nature of the store. The food was still good especially the sourdough. I am sure we will return and times will improve and look forward to updating this review and possibly adding some more stars. read more

Having lived in SF and frequenting Pier 39 for Boudins I was so happy to be able to get my favorite sourdough locally. Decided to stop in for a shopping break and enjoy clam chowder in a bread bowl. I think over the years the soup formula has changed. It was just ok. The bread was just ok as well. It may have been left out too long that day. The biggest disappointment visiting this location was the lack of cleanliness. The floors were filthy, and our table was up against a divider that looked like it had not been cleaned in a while. I remember having the best food experience in San Francisco at Boudin having their famous clam chowder in their sourdough bread bowl. I decided to get some at this store in Costa Mesa. I ordered togo the soup and bread bowls. As I was waiting I noticed their was clam chowder soup cans and had to get those too. Horrible customer service from supervisor, Curtis! Curtis needs a job where is not helping or serving the public. The person (not Curtis) that took our order did not add the bread bowl for $1 as requested and she admitted to messing up the order. Curtis did not care about the mistake being made. He overcharged for the bread bowl since the system is unable to charge the actual amount of $1. I pointed out to him overcharging for the bread bowl and his response in a rude and condescending manner was "sorry about that" and proudly gave me the receipt for the bread bowl and he reprinted the first receipt (which I had in my hand and didn't ask for) to show me I wasn't charged for the bread bowl to prove it. Not going to lie, I was dreading to have to call in for my order, but glad I did because David picked up the phone-- he was so nice! Normally, I feel rushed with phone orders, but not with David. He actually took the time to explain the options and patiently waited for my order. Picking up was a breeze. David had it nicely packed and waiting for me upon pick up. Of all the times I've ordered from Boudin, I never had it packaged so nicely. I was blown away as I was not expecting such a nicely wrapped platter-- a wonderful surprise on a late Tuesday afternoon. I love Boudin bread! It is a little fresher at other locations but this is still good. They have a large menu and nice selection for retail bread; we took home a long (loaf) sliced and a mini turtle. As for Covid-19 safety: there are barriers in front of the cashiers. All workers are wearing masks and gloves. The do offer outdoor seating but it is very limited, like 5 tables, and they do not pay pay attention to when they clear out so you have to ask for someone to come clear it. We found a table, but it hadn't been bussed yet and your food made it out first, hence the 4 not 5 stars. But other than that the food was tasty. read more

Actually deserves a 4 stars, but we knocked 1 down because of the cold sandwich. It's just...not good. We had clam chowder combo with chicken pesto sandwich (you can only get the cold sandwich for the combo) and we got ham and brie focacia. For the clam chowder we got the bread bowl for an extra $1. The clam chowder taste fine. However, the chicken pesto sandwich...it lacks flavor and the bread is so hard. We couldn't taste much of the pesto. And the craziest thing is the bread is so chewy. We literally had to bite it so hard and pull. It's almost inedible. The focacia is good. It came with a side of soup or salad, we chose salad. So I was a bit impressed with the service. My chicken basil pesto sandwich was in a baguette bread. The bread had a nice crunch to it and the chicken basil pesto had a herbaceous flavor. The chicken was moist and savory which complimented the pepperiness from the arugula. It was a really good tasting sandwich and it paired exceptional well with my soup. The clam chowder here has a thick viscosity texture. It's creamy, sweet and perfectly seasoned. It has chucks of potato's and bits of chopped clams. Although I wish there were more clams in my bowl, it still tasted great. I love eating sourdough bread bowls because I can easily rip a piece off and dip it in my soup. Who would have known that edible bowls can be so fun to eat with! In conclusion, Boudin's has good food served by friendly people. It just doesn't get better than that.
