I was referred to Dan Bouvier by a trusted coworker and our experience could not have been better. For starters, Dan approached the whole process like a true professional. It was a breath of fresh air to be dealing with someone that truly values customer service and again it showed in all aspects of the process. Over the past year I visited several jewelers and there is no comparison. Here's our experience: Dan and I exchanged a few emails/calls back and forth prior to our meeting so as to give him an idea of what we were looking for in an engagement ring. We picked up the ring within 10 days of the first meeting, which surprised me, but was exactly what Dan had planned from the initial meeting. A man of his word. The price was about the same as what I would have paid online -- but I got excellent personal service. Dan Bouvier runs his shop a little differently from others in the area, and I mean different in a good way. My now-fiancée and I went to both 333 Washington and 345 Washington to pick up an engagement ring, and we went with one from Bouvier. In the process, we went to at least 10 other merchants between the two buildings. Dan is a salesman, there's no doubt about it, but he's an exceedingly low pressure salesman. I personally appreciate this very much, as I never once felt like he was trying to "close," only that he wanted to talk up the best points of his wares. This leads me to his diamonds. He says that his philosophy is to buy stones that are "triple ex," in reference to excellent cut, polish, and symmetry. This makes sense in a lot of ways, as it's those that really make a diamond sparkle. The color and clarity can be important, but from, say, I color and SI2 clarity on up, it's going to be the cut that makes or breaks a particular diamond, as the mounting will hide the color to an extent and unless the inclusions are right on the table, you won't see them easily. Because of this, Dan's diamonds are - by the strict numerical standards of the GIA - by and large not ultra impressive, but they're all excellently cut. Because of the large percentage of price that hinges on the color and the clarity, you can get some pretty good deals on what are really great looking diamonds. Beyond the stones themselves, Dan's very customer service-oriented. Quick turnarounds on settings and sizings. He invited us back for steam cleaning in the future, e.g., for wedding photos when you want the ring to really sparkle up close. Take note, though, if you're truly budget conscious, you'll want to pay via check, as the use of credit cards will add about 1.5% to the total cost. All-in-all, it's a great little store, and we'll definitely be going back for wedding rings as well. read more

After purchasing a ring from a chain store, I was told that re-sizing it three sizes down would be impossible, so my fiance and I had to return it. Talk about disappointment. We decided that the best route would be to look to the independent jewelers in the city. I visited three jewelers in Downtown Crossing before making a final stop at Bouvier. The other shops I went to had nice rings but I felt like they looked a little chunky or not quite right proportionally. In one of the stores, I mentioned that what I had really liked on the original ring I had was the split shank (forked sides) on either side of the diamond halo. The salesperson at that store said, "Well, we don't have that ring so you're going to have to choose something else." And, for awhile, it seemed like that guy might be right. The next two stops didn't have the style I was looking for either. But THEN I walked into Bouvier's, where I not only found a beautiful antique-style ring with a split shank setting, but it was done in just the right proportions. Somehow, even with a 1.25 ct. stone, the ring looked completely proportionate on my scrawny size 4 finger. Dan and his team couldn't have been more professional -- after placing the order, the ring was finished in three weeks and it. Is. Perfect. I'm actually grateful that the first ring ended up being a bust because I'm SO in love with the ring we got from Bouvier's. My fiance and I can't stop looking at it -- the day after he gave it to me, we nearly got into three car accidents on our commute because we were so distracted by the light being thrown off by the ring. I am about a year late in writing this review- apologies for that. About a year ago, my now fiance bought my engagement ring from Bouvier after it being recommended to him from several colleagues. I am so happy he did. My ring is gorgeous, and I get compliments all the time about it. My fiance described the process as extremely helpful. Dan took the time to bring him in the back and describe the "Four C's" so when he made the purchase, he made an informed decision. Since then, we have been back twice to look at bands for the wedding. Each time, Dan was very nice and super informative about the process. I loved the fact that we were there to look and never did I feel pressured to purchase. Both times, we had my ring cleaned- free of charge. We will be returning this week to purchase our bands. I began searching for a ring with reading up as much as I could about diamonds, the 'four C's', expected prices, etc. While this helps, it only goes so far. The only way to really know about what exactly you're buying when you make one of the biggest purchases of your life is to go into jewelry stores and interact with the owners or sales people. Some might say a diamond is a diamond is a diamond and so long as the GIA report says what it's supposed to say, who cares? I however believe, diamonds and engagement rings in particular are something different. It's an emotional purchase and when you see it on your beloved's hand, worn proudly for the world to see, you want to smile not only because you found your partner in life but also because you remember fondly the story of you how placed that ring on her finger. The report matters, but so does peace of mind and having a connection to the diamond. Dan made the process both easy and fun. I was upfront about my budget and instead of trying to sell me a single diamond at the top of my budget or a little higher, we went through a range of diamonds - together - to figure out what stood out the most. The range of diamonds included some more toward the higher end of my budget and some toward the lower. To be sure, Dan is a salesman. But he's exactly the kind if salesman you want when you're making a momentous decision. He was warm, patient, closed the shop early to make sure we'd be uninterrupted, diligent with follow ups, and extremely knowledgable and forthright about all that was involved. In the end I walked away with a beautiful ring replete with a custom platinum cable band made to spec. I've made a promise to myself and my fiancée to never have need to go out and buy an engagement ring again. If I had to do it again though or, you know, just want to buy her some jewelry in the future, I know exactly where I'd start. read more

This is my 4th review. I don't write one unless something stands out dramatically. I am still deeply offended by my interaction with Bouvier. It has left me feeling bullied and disrespected and I will not recommend this shop to anyone. In summary: 1) Be prepared for a different calibre of customer service if you are spending in the thousands range, rather than in the $10K+ range (implied directly owner's words; see quotes below) 2) Be prepared for unannounced and unreasonable extra fees 3) Be prepared to deal with someone who makes the customer feel demeaned, belittled, and disrespected My fiancé bought my ring here, or more specifically, he bought the setting and used his mom's old diamond (relevant later). My fiancé had my size wrong and Dan told us that we could get it resized free of charge. When measured, I fit into both the 4.5 and 4.75. There are competing versions of what transpired next, but I can share my point of view as the customer. As a girl, I know that when I shop for clothes, if I am between an XS and a S, I always go with the XS. I always tell myself that I can fit into the smaller size and do not deliberately size up. I wanted the 4.5. That being said, rings are not my area of expertise, so I deferred to Dan, who gave me the 4.75. Sure enough, the ring is still loose on me. I went back, thinking that since it wasn't me who had chosen the 4.75 size, I could get it resized again without a problem. I was wrong. Although never mentioned before, Dan now said that there was a $35 fee. I understand that $35 is not a huge amount of money - this is more about the way that I was treated. I also understand that there are fees for many things in life. I usually pay them without an issue. This case is different for 2 reasons: 1) this fee could have been completely avoided if Dan had chosen the 4.5 size to begin with; I never requested the 4.75 size; 2) this fee had never been mentioned to us before. If we had been told that there would be an additional fee to resize again, then I wouldn't have been so quick to defer to Dan, and would have thought more carefully about the best fit. I went back today to see if things would be different. Instead, I was even more appalled at how I was treated. I expressed to Dan that we were hoping to buy the matching band from him,. He replied, "I'm not threatened by losing $1K worth of business. It's not like you're spending $10-15K." He then repeatedly mentioned how my fiancé only bought the setting (since he had used his mom's diamond), and how it had only been around $1K, rather than in the tens of thousands. I was flabbergasted. Was the owner actually telling me flat-out that he would have treated me differently depending on my socio-economic status/price of ring? I understand that store owners might think that way, but to say it out loud to a customer is baffling. If I had wanted to go to a store that treated people with snootiness and judgment, I could have gone to Tiffany's! Was I supposed to explain to Bouvier that we are grad students on a budget? Was I supposed to explain to him that we used his mom's diamond for its sentimental value? I obviously owed no explanation, but I'm still shocked at his acknowledgement that because we didn't spend enough according to his standards, he could treat us with belittlement. When I tried explaining to Dan that I hadn't chosen the 4.75 size, he refused to believe me, basically implying that I am a liar. We received an email from Dan saying: "It's unfortunate that you could not understand the reasoning behind the fee for sizing." Dan says it is our fault for "not understanding." What I don't understand is belittling and demeaning customers. It's a huge let down that Dan's business model involves making couples feel guilty about not spending enough money. EDIT: In response to comment below: 1) I've seen many business owners respond to customers' reviews by apologizing for the misunderstanding and inviting them to come back in. But making the customer happy is not part of the customer service model here. 2) If there is truly no difference in treatment of customers, then there was no need for Dan to mention the price of our ring relative to more expensive ones. His words speak for themselves. 3) I never said that he "called" me a liar. I wrote "implied." When one says something, and the other person doesn't believe it, there is an obvious implication. 4) See for yourself the tone and manner (all over making sure that I pay $35 when I was planning on spending an additional $1K+ on the matching band) that will greet you when you go to Bouvier. I didn't review to engage in an online war of words. I love Yelp because it allows customers to post their honest experiences, both good and bad, to allow prospective customers to make a more informed decision. The circumstances surrounding the purchase of a ring should be some of the most joyous in a woman's life, but due to Bouvier, it has simply been a frustrating nightmare. read more

Although Dan Bouvier came highly recommended, both through Yelp and other channels, my visit was very disappointing. I came in looking for an engagement ring setting. Dan brushed off my questions about settings and instead spent a significant amount of time trying to sell me a diamond at a price that was much higher compared to the offerings of most of the 8 other jewelers I visited. I found his attitude to be pushy and manipulative (it sounded like he was trying to frighten me into dealing with anyone other than him). I got the impression that he saw me as an uninformed consumer and tried to take advantage of that fact. I was referred to Dan by a friend of mine who had gone to him for his engagement ring and had glowing recommendations about the service, the expertise and of course, the ring. So after shooting Dan an email, I went over to meet with him in his office where he laid out various diamonds for me to look at. He knew my budget, never once pressured me to go above or beyond it, and quite frankly gave me an outstanding deal on a gorgeous cushion cut. As if that was not enough, I also asked for a completely one of a kind setting that he created in a rush so that I could propose on the date I had planned. To say Dan was accommodating would be an understatement. In Summary: 1) Be prepared for a different calibre of customer service than other jewelers - Dan is attentive, excited to help and actively takes an interest in his clients. (No I was not in the $10K+ range) After he delivered the ring and our business was done, he asked me to please email him about the proposal and her reaction to the ring. The guy just cares about his clients, end of story. 2) Be prepared for an unannounced phone call that the ring is done and ready a few days early so that you can come and see it to make sure it's perfect...which it was. 3) Be prepared to deal with someone who makes the customer feel in charge, as though their ring is the only ring in the world and who constantly makes sure you are happy throughout the process. I already have recommended Dan to three of my friends and will continue to do so as the time comes. He is an outstanding jeweler but more importantly, genuinely cares about his customer's happiness. My fiance was incredibly happy with the sale and purchase process, and we went back last Saturday to pick up bands. Dan was there and said 'hello,' but we worked primarily with another girl--can't remember her name offhand--who was also very friendly and did not pressure us in any way. She let me try on several styles in a number of different prices ranges, pointing out the pros and cons of all of the styles (regardless of the price ranges). My review of Bouvier Jewelers sort of applies in two parts. About 2 years ago, my boyfriend and I stopped in to see Dan as we were just in the "looking phase" for engagement rings, nothing serious. He had come with rave reviews from my boyfriend's best friend and their engagement ring experience. I can verify that when we visited, Dan was extremely helpful and patient in helping us figure out what would be my "perfect ring". I was always apprehensive about looking at rings with other jewelers because I felt as if I was out of place or asking stupid questions, and I never felt this way when we were with Dan. I remember exactly when I found THE ring... it was "me" and I loved it. Dan had asked if there was anything I would do to the ring to make it absolutely perfect, what would I do? I drew on a piece of paper and explained what I liked and didn't like, and off we went. That was over 2 years ago. Fast forward to the present... while out to dinner on Saturday Feb 13th at my favorite restaurant in Boston, Sean got down on one knee and proposed! With MY ring! To say it's beautiful or gorgeous or stunning seems not to do it justice. What Dan did was take my design on that piece of paper, created it on the computer, made a mold, and brought my dream ring into reality. It was created just for me and is one of a kind :) The ring itself is quality work... there are 144 tiny pave set diamonds in a split shank band, with more diamonds on the basket circling under the amazing round diamond - I wish I could attach pictures! I came to Bouvier Jewelers looking for an engagement ring for approximately $10,000. Dan was as helpful and competent at his job as anyone could be. I wouldn't classify Dan as a jewelry seller or dealer, but instead as a consultant or partner. You really feel like he is invested in the whole mind-reeling process of buying an engagement ring. I had a good idea of what I wanted, but it was Dan who really helped iron out the details of the ring. He let me know what parts of my idea would cause problems with the ring down the road and then worked with me to craft the best solution. I had a fantastic experience with Bouvier Jewelers and would highly recommend them to anyone in the market to purchase an engagement ring. By way of background, I started searching for an engagement ring for my now fiance last fall. As I imagine it is with most buyers, the most important thing to me was to get her the best diamond I could for my budget range. I had done my research ahead of time (learning all about diamond specs and costs) and had sporadically taken my girlfriend into jewelry stores over the course of our relationship to get an idea of her preferred style. When it came time to meet with jewelers, I thought it best not to leave any stone unturned, so I met with everyone from the more commercial shops (i.e., Tiffany's; Long's; Shreve, Crump & Low; Cartier; David Yurman; etc.) to private jewelers who work strictly on a referral basis, and I even looked at some of the online retailers such as Blue Nile. For the record, when you start this process, you'll quickly learn that every one of your friends has "a guy" or a certain store that they recommend - you can meet with every single one them but, in the end, it all boils down to your personal preference. My thought was to go into each shop with a budget and a certain type of ring in mind to see what type of quote they'd put together. In some cases, I even tried to play dumb just to see if they'd try to take advantage of me. Let's just say it's amazing how significantly prices can differ from one shop to the next, even when you're discussing the exact same ring. I had heard about Bouvier Jewelers from a coworker and, separately, from a grad school buddy, both of whom recommended it highly, so I thought it would be worth checking out. From the beginning, it just seemed like a good fit. Dan was extremely personable, informative, and reasonable. Unlike some of the bigger shops where I felt like I was dealing with a used car salesman trying to close me as soon as I walked in the door (comments like "I've been in this business for [X] years and can promise you that you won't find a deal better than this", or "I can't promise I'll be able to give you this deal if you come back a week from now"), Dan was extremely patient and respectful, and he tried to get a general idea as to what I was looking for. In fact, we didn't even discuss making a purchase that day. By some coincidence, one of my girlfriend's friends had also recommended Bouvier Jewelers to her, so, no joke, the very next day, my girlfriend asked if we could check it out (I had to quickly call Dan and ask that he pretend like he had never seen me before - he was a great actor). When my girlfriend and I went in, we were able to get an idea of exactly what she liked and what looked good on her. On both occasions, it was never an "over the counter" type situation, Dan invited us into his office and was, again, very polite and informative. You can tell right away that Dan values his customers and that he really wants to see them happy; I knew he was the right person for me to work with, and from there, we started putting the ring together. When it came time to find the stone, Dan tried to present me with as many options as possible and to let me know where I had some flexibility (i.e., clarity, color, etc.). What I appreciated most is that I never felt rushed or that I was merely another customer in the revolving door - rather than trying to move whatever stones he had in his inventory and get me out the door, Dan asked that I give him a few months to let him see what he could find in the market. Over the next few months, Dan would touch base about once / twice a month to let me know if he came across anything that I might be interested in. He was very patient with me, and finally, after about 3 months we found the ideal stone. Going into the process, I wanted to pay for the ring in cash rather than on credit or through financing but, go figure, we ended up finding the stone a little sooner than expected. I was a little worried that I wouldn't be able to cover it right away and that someone else might grab it - but Dan was flexible and we put together a payment plan (without credit or financing) and the stone was paid off shortly thereafter (as a side note, someone else actually made him a lump sum cash offer for the stone, but Dan informed him that it was already committed). When it came time to put the setting together, again, Dan presented me with a range of options at various price points in my budget range and we ended up deciding on a custom, modern design in platinum. While the setting was being made and the ring put together, we lined up all of the necessary insurance and shipping info, and I was able to pick up the ring a week later. When the ring was finally done, it looked absolutely fantastic - it exceeded my expectations, and my now fiance is obsessed with it. Very helpful in the shop, worked with us to find something that would match a custom-designed engagement ring, and rhodiumed the engagement ring for free.
