I had just awaken from the backseat of my friend's car, when he told us he was going to drop us off to make a few rounds on Uber. Not knowing how long he would take the best option seemed to be finding a place to eat and kill time. I was just a few blocks from Box Kitchen so I decided within 5 minutes of waking up that I wanted to come try this place. The hole in the wall, in a dark alley of a sketchy neighborhood gives this place a lot of character. I love finding places like these. I ordered the box burger, A chicken sandwich and garlic fries. It looks like the menu changes often because I didn't see any chicken and waffles or chicken sando. I had one friend with me so we split everything. The burger was really good and I suggest skipping the chicken sandwich. The bun was toasted. The bacon garlic gastrique gave it a nice bacon flavor without needing big strips of bacon in the burger, strips of bacon can be hard to manage. The garlic fries were ok. I think I could have settled with regular fries. They were pretty crispy too. They also let you bring the food into the bar next door. read more

Get. The. Elote. This is hands down the best corn I've ever eaten in my life. Not only it is interesting (which I can't say about most corn-centered meals in my life), it is delicious. I went to this place twice, and I've never been disappointed. The service is courteous and the pub food is just great. You can just carry it into the Tempest bar next door and have it with some beer. This is what we did anyway. The menu changes frequently, so it stays interesting. These were my favorite meatballs. The big ones, like, two-and-a-half pounds, that were like the size of an adult man's middle finger. We had one man who was the owner of a restaurant, one of his employees who cooked for him, and he asked me to come up with a menu that could work. I didn't go to Tempest, but I was near Mission and Fifth craving some good cheap eats for dinner. I was forward to Box Kitchen, and I was very happy with the dinner I got for my bro and me. The definite keepers were the chicken sando, the box burger, and the potato skins. You get a good hearty amount of meat for both sandwiches, and definitely filling for what you pay for. As for the potato skins, you already know pork belly and quail eggs sound awesome. Three doesn't sound like a lot, but don't expect those tiny toddler skins you'll find at some scrub like Applebee's. You're gonna get three hearty half potatoes the size of some people's hands. Definitely worth what you're paying for. The buffalo wings were excellent as well, but didn't knock my socks off like the first three dishes. As for the Chicken IN Waffles - I get the concept and you can definitely taste the confit. But personally, I'm not a fan of the concept and the chicken-tasting waffle just leaves me hungry alone. It's a neat idea, but no substitute for your classic chicken and waffles. We also shared Tempest with Chicken Fried Steak - pretty good, but the chicken fried steak isn't prepared like the classic. Instead of thin tenderized steak with some double breading, you're getting a big chunk of meat. Enjoyable, but not what I love about CFS. Overall, Box Kitchen hits a bunch of great notes from dinner takeout to bar food. If you hit up Tempest, I don't see why you'd get food anywhere but here. Because it's damn good. read more

The place is located off a small street that seems very sketchy but it's worth it for how good this burger is. I've had this burger twice now and each time it is cooked perfectly. The meat blend is delicious. The sharp melted cheddar on top is a perfect addition to this burger. The bun was slightly toasted. Pair this with garlic fries and its the perfect meal. I actually don't give out very many 5 stars but this place is as good as it gets. Box Kitchen is just this window next to the Tempest and you can only do to-go orders. I recommend phoning in ahead of time since sometimes there is a long line around 12-2 am. My go-to late night foot spot. You can't go wrong with these orders: 1) potato skins 4.5/5 2) chicken and waffles 4/5 3) box burger with garlic fries 5/5 A little pricey for the portion size but sometimes it's ok to indulge in terribly unhealthy food if it gives you a food orgasm. This is an alleyway in SoMa, run outside of a little window, next to Tempest bar. It holds late night hours, and the food was really good! I will be back as it's in my 'hood. They were out of the chicharones unfortunately; I'll have to try those next time. The two of us ordered the burger (with fries for $2 extra), the potato skins, and the chicken and waffles. Potato Skins: Wow! The potato skins really hit it out of the park! They're a little pricey at $9 for only 3, but they were so amazing! How can you go wrong with pork belly with an egg on top! They were perfection and worth the splurge! Burger: The burger was really good and juicy. The fries were great too with just the right amount of crisp and garlic. Chicken and Waffles: One of the chefs recommended this item, so we ordered it, but I did not care for it. The chicken is inside the waffle, but I couldn't really taste it. It was covered in powdered sugar and was too sweet for my palate. The Sriracha maple syrup was very good though, and I don't like syrup, so that's saying something. The spice in it was very nice. I've tried chicken and waffles a few times now at various places and I just don't think I'm into them, so take my review on this item with a grain of salt. Box Kitchen also serves lunch inside Tempest, and Tempest told me they really "class it up with black tablecloths." The lunch menu looked good. Sober or not I would never come here again. We had the rudest person take our order, the food was absolutely gross, and there were beggars everywhere. All this combined, I wish I could give less than a star. My friends and I wondered over to this hole in the wall after several drinks around midnight. The wait time is about 20-30 minutes, which the guy taking the order (super polite and friendly - great customer service!) let's you know upfront. We ordered the Box Burger w/ garlic fries and the chicken & waffles to-go. Both were absolutely delicious, greasy comfort food. The chicken & waffles comes with two sauce containers full of maple syrup. We actually tried sitting inside the bar 10 feet away that you can bring food into, but it was super packed by 6 PM with all the happy hour goers. Box Kitchen is located in a rather shabby alley, right next to Tempest bar. But they serve some bomb food. I got the food to-go, and I had a bit of a walk home after stopping by target so I might not have gotten the best flavor of it though. The potato skins ($10) that everyone is raving about is pretty damn good. pretty damn fatty, too. It's sort of a mini heartattack in one that is totally worth having to go to the gym for a few hours. The chicken and waffles ($10) had a bit of a spice to it, which was amazing. The chicken that you get is not very much though sadly ): No seating. They serve fries, burgers, sandwiches, gyros, chicken and waffles, salads and errthang. Lots of things take about 15-20 minutes, so you know it's not just frozen food.. but the wait is a bit of a downer. For us, this place turned out pretty disappointing. It is basically a street food window where you have to order and pick up your food outside and seating is available in a dive bar next door. Offering very weird service and overrated chicken and waffles, this spot just didn't live up to our expectations that had skyrocketed after seeing their yelp ratings. Chicken was overly breaded which made it very hard and taste right together. The breading didn't taste any good either. I'd say don't bother stopping here unless it's too late at night and you're craving chicken n waffles real bad. There's better places out there. read more

Usually I don't eat fast food. But it was evening we have little break from night club for eating some food. Since it was late there was not a big choice there to it. I find this nice place and give it a try. I am very picky about food. First thing I like about place is how clean they keep kitchen. Second thing is it smells good. Usually fast food kitchens reuse grease for days in a row, which crates specific smell. I don't feel it there. Service lady was very tired but it does not effect how fast she service us. Stopped by this joint before a concert at the Mezzanine, and boy am I glad I did! It was close to the venue, so we parked on this street and walked over there, super convenient! You order at the window, and you can take it into the bar next door to it (Tempest?) and enjoy your meal to order drinks inside. On to the food: Buffalo Ranch Chicken Sando: The fried chicken inside the sando was breaded very lightly and delicious! I don't even know how to describe it, all i know is I inhaled this so damn fast Box Burger: I was surprised that it was a legit, fat beef patty inside the burger! I thought it'd be one of those tiny little patties, so that was amazing. It was cooked to juicy perfection, not overdone at all. For $2 more, you can add french fries to your burger. Ground chuck burger, bacon shallot gastrique, white cheddar, lettuce, tomato, crispy shallots on a potato bun. WOW, lots of flavor. This burger was on point. I've had a few burgers in my days but this definitely stuck out to me. I loved that they decided to add crispy shallots, lot the different textures. The lettuce they used was arugula so I also got the spiciness in my overall flavor. WOW, this was definitely a crowd pleaser and I highly recommend it! Turn down Natoma alley and look for this joint! I got the Box Burger - Grand Schmitz Ranch Chuck w/ bacon shallot gastrique, white cheddar, spinach, tomato, crispy shallots, potato pepper bun. When was the last time you got a burger with fried shallots and true leafy spinach greens? Usually they just slap on some iceberg lettuce, devoid of any real nutritional value or flavor and call it a day! The Box Burger I ordered was absolutely PACKED with flavor, and interesting tones I had not previously tasted on a burger. The crispy shallots and bacon shallot gastrique gave it a truly earthy, rich flavor. It really hit the spot. My friend got the Chicken IN Waffles w/ Sriracha Maple Syrup. Nope, that was not a typo - Chicken IN Waffles. As in, the waffles had chicken inside of them. If this wasn't enough of a treat, they came with a side of Sriracha Maple Syrup! I don't even like hot sauce, and I have to admit I loved this combination. Though I question how it first came about - who dared combine the two?? Defying all logic, the sweet maple mixes well with the spicy Sriracha sauce, giving a great kick to the classic chicken and waffles. The perfect late-night snack. I cannot recommend Box enough - their menu is innovative, delicious, and reasonably priced, and their service manages to match this quality. My only suggestion would be to come in a car or cab. This place is awesome! The guy that took our order was super funny and real nice. He keeps you updated as you wait about how much longer it's going to take them to get your food out. Don't be fooled by the fact that this place doesn't look like a five star restaurant! The food in my book is five star quality. The burger was delicious and not over seasoned. You really get to taste the meat. And all the condiments added to the burger were fresh and delicious too. Even the fries were freshly done and delicious. The wings are also real good. They were freshly made and the wing sauce was deliciously spicy. If I was a local, I would visit this place often.
