    San Francisco Lox Sandwich
    Marj S.

Took a City trip with some friends and stopped by the Ferry Plaza Farmers' Market on a Saturday morning! There was a vast selection of vendors and wanted to try SO many things, but knew I wanted something light and fresh! I decided on getting something here and ordered the San Francisco Lox Sandwich, and it was delicious! The cashier was super welcoming. I believe they use Acme Sourdough for their sandwiches (which was also a vendor at the market!). So fresh and tasty!

Next to the stand where Cap'n Mike sells their delicious house smoked fishes, they also sell canapés with a varying selection of their own product. Tasty and reasonably priced, and they are a great addition to a visit to the farmers' market on Saturday.. I wish the canapé had more slices of fish on it, but they would have to raise their prices. Consider this an appetizer, as canapés are, not a whole meal.

A see through thinnest slice of fish hidden under piles of toppings, is why you taste no fish. Holy smokin ripoff at the Saturday market and the most demanding of a tip between all the vendor tents outside w/no seating no service ambiance, saying they'll hand off the device to tip before you see what they serve you isn't like their loaded samples on display

I've been coming to the Saturday Farmer's Market at the Ferry Building every so often for years, but only this year had I finally come across Capn' Mike's Holy Smoke. It's been around for a while but I think the crowds surrounding it seemed like too much and I made the mistake of walking around it. If you haven't tried them yet, don't make the same mistake as I did - definitely try their open faced sandwiches. If we hadn't gotten food from another stand, I would've had liked to order at least one other type of sandwich.. or more; they all look amazing! A sample of each sandwich of the day is near the register for a nice visual which I found helpful in deciding. We got one order of the San Francisco Style Red Lox with lemon, capers, and pickled onions ($10). Given the samples, I was expecting only one "side" i.e. one piece of bread with lox and toppings but it comes with two. Silly me. These sandwiches though are really delicious. If you love lox you gotta try these.

At the Saturday Ferry Building Farmers Market, you see the vendors with their fresh fruits and vegetables, food vendors selling their delicious foods and specialties, breads, pastries, cheese, and fresh meats and seafood. We stopped and were admiring the smoked salmon and lox at the Cap'n Mike's Holy Smoke stand. The lady gave us samples of the different types of smoked salmon and lox. We loved the thinly sliced cold-smoked mild tasting and not salty San Francisco Style Lox, which is from King Salmon. So good that we bought a package. They also have salmon candy, jerky and sticks and smoked black cod, tuna and trout too. If you love smoked salmon and lox, visit Cap'n Mike's towards the back of the Farmers Market. You won't be disappointed.

It's a pretty BFD when Cat C. devours some salmon! I usually find salmon very fishy, but this salmon nigiri at the Marriott in Waikikki was amazing. And I like the smoked salmon appetizer at Paul Martin's. I'm trying to get more into fish still, so I think if salmon is super fresh and smoked well then I'm okay. My friend was craving Cap'n Mike's smoked lox sammie and treated me. It was between the salmon lox and the tuna lox, but decided to do the salmon. I got the half salmon lox sandwich with a cup of the gazpacho ($10). The salmon melted in my mouth! It was delicious and so smooth. I loved the huge slice of heirloom tomato. The cream cheese was decadent and gotta love the Acme Bread they used. My friend got the half beet salad which looked good, but beets aren't my thing. The gazpacho was nice and refreshing and fresh, but was turned off with the burnt crostini. It was a light but filling late lunch. I would come back for another salmon lox sandwich for sure.

Holy Smoke is right. The Salmon is fresh and bread is soft. It is a perfect combination. The staff is very friendly and willing to explain the different offerings of the day.

Saturday 7/20/13: beet salad (3.5 stars) & Alderwood smoked salmon (3 stars)

Cost: $21 total for the tea, small salad, and lox. Pic: http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/capn-mikes-holy-smoke-san-francisco?select=aayWMt7e0rm9-CfA-C3X6g#aayWMt7e0rm9-CfA-C3X6g * Iced tea w/ desert flower ($3) - 3.5 stars Nice and light, with a subtle flower taste. * Roasted Beet Salad ($6 cup, $11 bowl) - 3.5 stars Lots of beets - makes up about 80% of this salad, I'd say! The goat cheese was strong and pairs well (there's also a blue cheese option). The greens were crisp and fresh, but there wasn't much of it. I wasn't a big fan of the pickled stuff - but I generally don't like anything pickled. * Alderwood smoked red king salmon - 3 stars (with smoked salmon spread, cucumbers, pickled onions, & red leaf lettuce. $12) The bread's on the stale side, though it has a decent crisp. The salmon was really, really salty. The cucumbers were pretty old and soggy. Onions were fresh and crisp. They were really selling this one because you get "double" the salmon, cured pieces on top *and* in the spread, but you really couldn't tell at all. It just seemed like normal cream cheese. Also FYI this comes with capers (not on the menu), and they didn't stay on very well and mostly just fell all over the plate.

Cap'n Mike's Holy Smoke It's fantastic!! It's fabulous!! It's fresh!! It's located down by the Ferry Building in San Francisco They are here on Saturday's for the Farmer's Market. Cap'n Mike Holy Smoke Yes, I had the "San Francisco Lox Style Sandwich"... What is a San Francisco Lox Style Sandwich? http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/-nJ-xiA6A6IoWoTpYvI5Iw?select=tM0MvDjmpvkxzEWXQYJ6bw Let's start from the bottom up... It's an open face sandwich... You start with several slices of Acme Sourdough bread....(one of my favorite bread) Layer it with their own Cream Cheese Spread...(nice and smooth) Next comes the cold-Alderwood-smoked thinly sliced red king salmon (fresh and silky) Topped off with some Pickled Red Onions, Roasted Red Peppers and Shaved Fennel with a tad of Lavender Salt. Yumm....I'm just gonna sink my teeth into this sandwich!! This open face sandwich was built right from the get-go....with every bite there was Cream Cheese and Lox and Acme bread. Awesome!! What more can you ask for. (just a note: if your not into Lavender Salt...you might want to ask them to hold off on the Lavender Salt.) Normally I'm a Egg person for breakfast....but today the Lox Sandwich..... It's lite, Lox is low in calories, chemical free, preservative free and no nitrates. I had their Ice Tea which complimented the sandwich nicely. Not too sweet. They also have: Albacore Tuna 'Lox' White Salmon Lox Sockeye Salmon Lox Cold Smoked Sliced Sturgeon and many more.... I'll be back to try the others. Highly recommended. Service was great. You can purchase the Lox separately if you want to take some home. Yes...there was a line....but it goes moderately fast. With this all said and done....4 stars....till I try the others..... Note: Cap'n Mike are at other Farmer's Market as well.

Just to clear up any confusion... The business is called "Cap'n Mike's Holy Smoke" (in Rohnert Park), and the stall is called "San Francisco Lox Sandwich" (at local farmers markets). The menu http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/capn-mikes-holy-smoke-san-francisco?select=EqlC7uKXGSuusTaPZeDkmQ#EqlC7uKXGSuusTaPZeDkmQ features 3 or 4 choices available every time. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/capn-mikes-holy-smoke-san-francisco?select=4HJOX2fBlzymjhWTJyHCOg#4HJOX2fBlzymjhWTJyHCOg Not cheap at $10 per plate, but the food is awesome. Just look at the pic of my plate. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/capn-mikes-holy-smoke-san-francisco?select=ZVc4Boym64ghU4jH99vORA#ZVc4Boym64ghU4jH99vORA That's the Albacore tuna lox, on sourdough bread, cream cheese, roasted golden beets, pickled onions, toasted walnuts, and sprinkled with lavender salt. Doesn't that look good? It was delicious! Hours: Sat, Tue & Thu until 2pm. @ Ferry Building's farmers market, and a few other bay area markets.

Super good lox here--I love the combinations of toppings with the different lox. I've gotten the: 1) White Salmon Lox 2) Albacore Tuna Lox Both were really good. I love the Tuna lox because the walnut adds a nice crunch to it! It was perfect. White Salmon lox was also really yummy and fresh. Overall, really good lox on sourdough! However, it's a little high for me on price--I would need something else to eat to fill me up if I were to eat it all on my own. I've always just shared it with someone else so I could eat other things as well; I recommend this if you're looking for a small snack/something to eat as you walk around the market!

I ate here for lunch on Thursday. Cap'n Mike's is at the Ferry Plaza Farmer's Market on Thursdays and Saturdays only. I ordered the red lox open-face sandwich. The ingredients are simple but fresh: sourdough, cream cheese, lox, red onion, capers, lemon. The lox was fantastic; I only wished that they were just a tad more generous with it. Overall, it was a delicious, light, but substantive lunch. Since I like sourdough more than bagels, this may even surpass cream cheese and lox on a good NYC bagel (but I will have to think hard about that before I commit sacrilege). $10 is just a tad more than cream cheese and lox on a bagel in New York, and, given that this sandwich is assembled with much more care, I would not say that it is particularly expensive for what it is. Take your food to the back of the Ferry Building and eat it under the West Coast sun in full view of the Bay Bridge. It's a pretty magical experience.

Mealy Tomato and Red Onion Sandwich (with a hint of lox)
    Dave H.

I tried the Northwest Red Lox Sandwich. The actual lox were very good. I might buy some of the lox sometime, but the "sandwich" was a boring, clunky mess. The serving of lox wasn't terribly generous, nor was it accompanied by anything exciting - just a fistful of loud red onion and huge slices of mealy tomato. This was all on bread that was either very lightly toasted or just stale. Huge amounts of cream cheese - no complaints there. Not worth $10, not coming back (to the sandwich tent).

Been here a couple of times already and the service never failed. Even came here during the Cherry Blossom Festival and the staff were still friendly / accommodating. This cozy spot mainly focuses on katsu plates, but I like how they had off menu or specials to choose from if you'd like another option. I will say though them katsu plates were just chef's kiss. The meat is pounded thin enough where it's still juicy and tender, but doesn't affect the exterior from being crunchy and a bit flaky. Nothing was dry here yallll! I also like how it already comes with miso soup and salad. Huge fan of that Hamachi Truffle special though. Think of a citrusy flavor from the ponzu, fresh fish, a bit of micro greens, and a thin slice of jalapeño that just ~works~ on a cute wooden spoon that you want to steal I could honestly eat like 5 spoons of this. I'd skip on the calamari as it was kind of skimpy to share with a large group. Only note was that their fried katsu curry was a bit underwhelming with having more slices of carrots than potato! Would love to come back if I am ever in the area.
