So Im here for work and wanted a burger, searched Yelp, found this place and saw it was very close to my hotel. Short drive and I arrived. I had The Runaway it was good not over the top but good. I prefer my buns toasted. I had the cheesey, bacon tots they were good. Over all I give it 7 out of 10. Service was good nothing over the top. This is a burger joint most people take their food with them to eat on the train or take home. I ate there. I would try it again but would ask to have the bun toasted. read more

Great, quick spot to grab food getting on or off the train. The double cheeseburger was a bit too heavy for me, but I think I'd love a single next time. All burgers are offered with onions, pickles, and ketchup, which I said yes. I thought it'd be rings and chips, but the onions and pickles were all diced up so it was A LOT! I'd opt out for the onions and pickles next time, but my husband loved it. The tater tots are amazing. The mac and cheese bites are nothing special. The milkshakes are thick and delicious! My black and white shake was made as a half and half, which I had never seen, but it was still good. Some tables inside for customers, so you have the option to sit and eat or grab and go. company got a food truck of this place and the food pretty good as it was free, but compared to the price to size its not justified. Burgers are on the small size and the sides are too. Got the Nash and the rings. Nash was about the size of my palm and the thickness of my hand. Had good taste and heat. Just wish it was bigger and the rings I got 4 rings. I ordered the Gandy Danger Burger, large fries and a 5 piece nuggets. Let me just tell you I am SUPER PISSED off that I did not order several hundred nuggets. Those nuggets were ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY the best nuggets I've ever had in my life. I couldn't even take a picture of them because I vacuumed them down before I got the chance. First, time visitor and had a poor experience. The service was horrible. No one greeted me when I walked in. Then I waited for someone to speak to me in a low tone to ask me for my order. Then, she didn't even get my order correct. I had to repeat it back to her. The food is very basic and nothing special. I got luke warm fries and 2 boiled hot dogs that I could have made myself at home. I would never return to try anything else and I would not recommend anyone waste their money. Consider this to be one of those semi-difficult reviews that just feels like it falls between a 3 and a 4 on the review star rating scale (c'mon Yelp, give us some halves to work with!). I mean I probably could've knocked this writeup to 4, but let's consider timing (and taste) as the main factor in what led me to a 3 star decision for Boxcar Burgers. Honestly, I'm a tad surprised by the Yelp score of Boxcar. Coming in at 4 1/2 stars isn't anything to scoff about and was definitely a big reason for why my fiancée (now wife) and I chose to order up a myriad of fried food items back in October. Perhaps we would've chosen to order from Boxcar sooner, though their location at the Ronkonkoma train station, amidst traffic and construction and confusing parking, makes it a little difficult to maneuver to it unless we'd actually be catching or returning from a train. I'm not letting that factor into the overall review because if BB was truly special, I'd park on the train tracks to get their grub...but that wasn't the case. Now our order was through their website which was an easier way of seeing everything they had to offer and to curtail the amount of time that I'd be inside the storefront (gotta be careful with where you park). Upon arrival, I ran inside to find a low lit, brick-laden interior that almost gave off some kind of NYC dive-ish bar vibe. I was digging it until I saw the staff members getting yelled at by their boss for the wrong bag sizes to put orders in. My food was still being gathered and apparently it was my order that wasn't fitting in the smaller bags they had originally chosen to use. Once my name was called and everything was assembled, I was a little nervous about whether or not I was going to find something was missing, but surprisingly, the order was correct. Nice way to bring things to a positive. Once back home, we dove into our bounty of burgers and sides...though it was here that things started to truly unravel. I mean Boxcar's chicken nuggets were crispy and tender and their jalapeño poppers had a cheesy zing to them, but the two most important items of the order just didn't seem to hit well for either of us: the burgers and fries. Now you'd think these would be the staples of the place with their name having "burger" in the title, but it honestly wasn't (and neither were the fries). I'll give them a nod that their French fries had the skin-on style and that they weren't eaten immediately because they needed to travel (hence a little sogginess), but they didn't exude any specific flavor or excitement in taste otherwise. Not bad fries, but not great. The same can unfortunately be said about the burgers. I'd honestly say they seemed like an attempt to copy All-American or even perhaps Five Guys with the size, style, and condiments chosen, but when it was all put together, each bite just didn't wow either of us in any way. Overall, I suppose maybe my expectations were a little higher for Boxcar Burgers knowing that good Yelp score, and it's possible that in the moment, from the chill vibe and tastier non-burger/fry options, I might've went for four stars in this review. But having the time to think about that trip since, I haven't once said "Oh I can't wait to return to Boxcar Burgers." With that in mind, I head south to three stars which helps lessen the difficulty that could've been a half star addition (still, get on that Yelp!). read more

Located in kind of a strange location at the LIRR Lake Ronkonkoma train station this burger joint is a good spot for picking up tasty eats and a cold soda for the ride back to Manhattan. Even though it's in a modern setting it's like an old school burger joint. Everything is served fresh such as their burgers, hot dogs, house cut fries, tater tots, and other more. I really liked their onion rings, mac & cheese bites, and chipotle black bean burger which is pretty much the only non-meat burger on the menu. Nice amount of sauces and toppings to choose from. Simple burger joint by the railroad perfect for a quick bite after taking the train or just in general. This is a no frills type of place. They use martins potato buns and and a relatively small menu. You get what you pay for and there's something simple about that. Overall the burgers and sandwiches are decent and tasty. The sides are iffy for me because I've had so much better quality and taste elsewhere. I also tried to ask for some mayo when picking up my food at the counter but the lady said she didn't know what we ordered and we have to talk to the guy at the cashier so I said forget it. Afterwards, I looked at the menu and extra sauce is 25 cents? No big deal for their specialty sauces but I just wanted some mayo which in my book, is on the same level as ketchup. I take the train everyday and this place was never a thought in my mind. One day my husband said let's try Boxcar Burgers. So we did and I will never do any other burger spot again. So the first time we tried it we ate here 2 days in a row and again last night. I can't stay away. The place is cute and clean. I never ask to use the restroom nor never saw it while I was in there. The staff is nice and oh boy it's busy in there. I have only tried the Runaway. Which is sooo good to me. My husband gets all types of stuff on his double patty and my daughter likes the grilled cheese. And of course fries. I need to try the hotdog. Stopped by here at 9:10 pm on a freezing night, when everything else around was closed and we just wanted a place to warm up while waiting for our next train home (we missed the last one by not more than 20 seconds). Had no idea what to expect and stumbled upon a really great burger joint somehow. What a treat. Ordered one of their Chicken Burgers and Tater Tots, and was damned satisfied. Guys working behind the counter were super polite and (apparently) not too ticked off about us staying until 5 minutes before closing time, just to stay warm a bit longer. Came here for a pickup on a random Saturday night. It was pretty late and the place was dead. Prices are very low considering the times. I only ordered 1 cheeseburger and an order of tots. Cheeseburger was ok. I actually thought the burger itself tasted almost like McDonald's for a second. And I'm sure that's insulting to a place like this, but I've had tastier burgers like Smash or Shake Shack that come to mind. Wasn't really impressed. The Tots were good but didn't seem cooked enough, some had weird texture to it as if it wasn't cooked all the way. Other than that, the staff was welcoming and polite. This is a hidden gem located at the Ronkonkoma LIRR. If you haven't tried this place yet, I highly recommend it! Hot dogs had a nice crunch and both the burgers and hot dogs were juicy. The toppings really elevated them both and definitely give kudos for using Martin's Buns. Parking was a little tricky until we realized you can park in the lot near the laundromat, it's there for the businesses. read more

Unfortunately, this time I decided to order from GrubHub let's just say that was my first and last time ordering from GrubHub, the driver took multiple orders and was 20 minutes away in the opposite direction from me making other deliveries. By the time I received my food, everything was cold and my shake was no longer a shake. It was just melted ice cream. I'll stick to DoorDash.
