Cheesy Garlic Bread is a MUST! I was expecting your typical basic garlic bread, but no this was a piece of art. Mozzarella, ricotta, sliced garlic, grated parmesan, and Italian seasoning with a side of red sauce AND ranch - amazing! Dairy-free mozzarella sticks are usually a bust, but Boxcar Pizza makes the best vegan version I've had. Great crust and the manager there was so welcoming and kind. As someone with a nut allergy I was surprised at how good their vegan cheese was given that it was nut free (the mozzarella sticks are the only things with nuts!). We ordered takeout to take home after a long day of hiking. The online ordering is quite simple, and the descriptions used on the ToastTab menu are thorough, even highlighting all the options that could be made gluten-free. We ordered the pizza week special: the smash and pass, as well as a Bianca, both without tomato sauce, as my partner is on a low acid diet. We requested the gluten-free option on both and put a note about no tomato sauce and celiac-level precautions in the "special requests" field. After waiting over the estimated 30 minutes in the car without any updates, I went inside to see if things were ready. They said it would be another five minutes. With our request being special and requiring extra safety precautions (they prepare and slice the GF pizzas in a separate area), I didn't mind waiting and extra 10-15 minutes. I confirmed the order was GF and saw that they remembered no tomato sauce, which was a relief, as so many notes often get lost in transit with online ordering. As far as the pizzas themselves, they have the best, fluffiest GF crust we have ever had! The pizzas are just as heavy as any meaty, cheese, gluteny pizza and you probably wouldn't miss anything even if you weren't vegan or gluten-free! The cheese is stretchy, and the smash and pass tasted just like a hamburger. I'm only docking one star for burnt edges of the crust and the overly salty cheeses. This place is awesome! I came in on a Friday night for a pick up order only to discover that I had mistakenly scheduled it for Saturday night pick up. They were incredible and said they could start making the pizzas right away and all I would need to do is update my Uber eats order. This is my wife's favorite pizza and it is her birthday. I can't tell you how awesome it is that they went out of their way to ensure I got her pizza. Had this for the first time today and got the Jimmy Pesto. They make, what could be, 8x10 inch personal pizzas and I very easily ate it all but halfway through, the over saltiness of it hit. I have been to Detroit where the talented rapper Eminem is from. Detroit is where the pinball like running back legend Detroit Lion Barry Sanders played. Detroit is where I was in awe when I saw the Diego Rivera murals there. Detroit isn't known for it's pizza yet lately Detroit pizza seems to be getting popular. Boxcar Pizza was named best vegan pizza this past year in Veg News magazine so had great expectations coming here. Boxcar Pizza delivered! I went with the Viktor Vaughn pizza. The pizza came with mozzarella, cheddar, kale, red onions, ricotta, mama lil's peppers, and pesto. I got it with a side of red sauce for dipping which I recommend. The pizza was very tasty. Plenty of flavor. It was a bit rich and filling for plenty of vegan cheese was used. Perhaps a touch less vegan cheese and other pizza pies with more veggies would be nice. I like that this pizza had plenty of veggies on it. I just got this and was able to eat it all. Each pizza serves one to two depending on your appetite. If you come with a friend or spouse might be good to split one and order a Kale Caesar salad to share. Viktor Vaughn is the real name of Dr. Doom who happens to be the arch enemy of the Fantastic Four in the Marvel Comics. Viktor Vaughn is also a British rapper. GREAT GLUTEN FREE CRUST. I used to be vegan, no longer am, but came with a friend who is vegan at her recommendation and was pleasantly surprised. Even when I was vegan, I stayed away from the fake cheeses, but whatever they use at Boxcar really was delicious. The leftovers we have smell very strange, but it still tastes good, so I can confirm the cheese is great fresh out of the oven and on leftovers the next day. I got the one with black olives and pepperoni and my husband got the one with pickles, ranch, and "chicken," both were great. My husband was a little concerned my pizza hadn't been made with the GF crust because of how bouncy and pizza-like it looked haha. It's a thick crust, not deep dish style, but not a typical pizza crust - delicious! Recommend getting hot honey to go along.
