Nothing crazy unique, but I do love the layout, multiple rooms and the low breakfast bar up front. The menu is filled with classics and some unique dishes as well. Brails has become one of my favorite breakfast/brunch places in Eugene. I genuinely like this place because of the omelette variety. I like the rice omelette and the spicy pork omlette. Not to mention, I can get hot cakes, bacon n' eggs, hash brown and everything else that consists of a typical American breakfast here --AND they serve some Korean food too. While I'm not big on fusion food, Brails seems to work in a Korean influence with American diner food. I'm pretty impressed. The service isn't bad either. Like many deliciously delectable establishments, Brails can have a long wait. It gets super busy around 10am-12pm on the weekends. I try to avoid the crowd by going early or on weekdays. Ate here for the first time today, it was lovely! It was quiet and calm, the waitress was amazing and even made my son a mickey mouse shaped pancake. What can you say~ it's the go to place for great food. It's busy, crowded, squeeze in, squeeze out, noisey and bustling, parking is crazy but the ambience is perfect. This was a great find for Anne and I to get some coffee/tea at a local coffee shop. Anne ordered the cafe americano, very good. I ordered a tea called Jodo, which a white tea with a flavor of honey. I also ordered a blueberry scone. Both were very good and a great way to start the day. There is plenty of seating inside or on the patio. Very friendly and helpful staff. I've eaten at both Brail's locations now and have really loved it. I've found that most Eugene restaurants are just OK, but not great....excluding breakfast places. There are lots of excellent breakfasts in this town. Brail's is my favorite. It's always busy, often there's a line to get in. Today I had the Korean spicy pork omelette with hash browns. In the past I've tried the waffles, the biscuits and gravy and the corned beef hash and eggs...all of them have been terrific. The hash browns were perfect. I really like their coffee too. Incredibly disappointing experience. Sunday at 1030am we were seated quickly but then waited quite some time before being approached about beverages. Watched other tables seated after us helped before us. Finally approached, asked for an americano with steamed half and half, then I was told they don't have any cream. Weird. Decided on mimosas instead. They were basic but strong. Buckwheat pancakes were ok. Very dense, even for buckwheat. No real butter served, only butter substitutes were are literally made from the worst ingredients and closer related to plastic than food, and if you want good maple syrup it's an extra charge otherwise you get sugary substitute. Swiss omelet was remade hastily after making it wrong the first time but when it was brought out again the onions were completely raw, sausage gravy was barely a whisper, thin, next to no sausage to speak of, and Swiss cheese not even melted. Overall I was not charged for my meal because it was so bad. After reading a lot of great reviews, I question what others constitute as "great food". read more

We spent the night in Eugene on the way further south and found this place online. The decor is bright and tasteful and the staff friendly. The food was delicious; I finished the entire meal (Brail's omelette with hash browns), which is unusual for me in the morning. Don't usually get to this side of town in the early AM but today we went to the eye doctor on Oak and stopped here for breakfast. It's been a few years but still top of their game. We originally planned to go to a different restaurant, and decided we wanted something less expensive instead. Since we were on Willamette, Brail's was a great alternative - since we were also craving for some coffee. It wasn't as busy as I had anticipated, even on a holiday, we were seated fairly quickly (only to find out how spacious this place is, it just goes on forever!). We each got something off the espresso menu, then proceeded to our menu. It's been a while since I was here, and there were several pleasant surprises on the menu - including the house specials and the varieties of omelettes. I myself got a rice omelette, while my companion got the specials. We were all impressed by our food - they are creative, and delicious for a fair price. I must admit I was less than impressed with my coffee - got myself a salted caramel latte, I don't know how to explain it, but it just tasted way off to me. That's really why the star was taken away. Oh, and at the end of the meal, we had to wait in a long line to pay, think their machine was down or something. It got really crowded cuz there was a whole bunch of us waiting to pay, while there were more crowds coming in. It was a breezy morning so a lot of people were trying to cram into the space instead of standing outside. Joy makes it a joy to come here. She's such a nice and friendly lady, and I'm happy her expansions are going well. The food is good, plentiful, and well priced. It's one of the only places I can feel satisfied off of such a wallet-friendly price in Eugene. I wish they had a little more variation in breakfast items, but I have never been disappointed. Found this place a couple years ago and it was my favorite breakfast spot in Eugene until now. Will never be returning to this restaurant after how me and other customers were treated today. Service was horrible. 1. Was told 15 min wait. Took 30min to get called to be seated for a table of 2, at the same time a 6top was called to be seated who maybe waited 10 min. 2. Waiter took us through the restaurant to find our table, he then pushed tables together and sat the 6top. Apologized to us since there is no tables available and asked us to wait again. Said we would get next available table. 3. Another 20 min pass by when an Asian lady (I assume the owner?) come out screaming at everyone to come inside and brought them through the restaurant, were it turned into a free for all, find a empty seat and seat yourself i guess. There was literally a group that just parked and walked in and was able to be seated before us and other people who have been waiting. 4. We let the staff know what had just happened and even showed them on their own list that our name was circled and said next. Told them we have been waiting almost an hour to be seated and yet people who are just showing up are getting seated before us. All they said was sorry and they will get us the next avaible seat, like it wasnt a big deal. the same thing they told us 20 min ago. We left along with other groups who were fed up with their service. We went to the original pancake house that was even more busy and got seated in about 10 min. The people that worked there were superb and I have no complaints about the service however I would recommend avoiding Brails for other reasons. I suspect the reason it got voted best hangover breakfast is 90% of the patrons are college students and probably the largest voting block for the Eugene Weekly and who haven't yet honed their ability to judge a good meal. In any event here is what I experienced. While waiting to be seated we had full view of the kitchen in operation and noticed not a single hair net out of 5 kitchen workers. My son said he suspected hair nets aren't required in Eugene if your hair is not longer that shoulder length. Possibly but why do you need a law to have good food hygiene? We ordered the Waffle Combo and French Toast Combo which include eggs and sausage or bacon. The food arrived cold but they graciously cooked my wife another egg, I just ate mine cold. It was a busy day and they did appear to be short staffed so this may not be the norm. The food and it's preparation is what kills it for me. The waffles tasted as if the batter was made from the cheapest box batter you could get. The sausage was the greasiest and saltiest, spectacularly bad. The french toast was less than average. As we ate we could easily tell the oil used for frying was overheated and oxidized by the heat. If your not tuned into this flavor educate because it has the same health problems associated with rancid oil (cell inflammation). This flavor lingered for an hour or more after we finished our meal and has flavor characteristics similar to old rancid oil. The next few hours after the meal we both experienced mild discomfort in out stomachs. This comes from cooks that aren't paying attention or don't know what they're doing. In conclusion I got the impression that they cut corners every chance they could. Cheap waffle batter, cheep cooking oil, cheapest sausage, cheap bread, no hair nets. As I consumed my last bite I spotted a oil soaked hair on my plate. My son was right, it wasn't shoulder length. read more

Brails, you're perfect just the way you are. It is everything one should expect and hope for in the largest diner in the town limits. It is such a fun place to start your day midmorning if you plan to putter around all day and do nothing. It's the only breakfast place I can think of that if you are in jeans you are kind of over dressed. Chances are you'll see someone you know, learn some form of gossip or town talk, and probably laugh harder and louder than is normally socially acceptable, probably because you are likely still at least slightly sloshed from the night before. How else does Brail's sound like a great idea for breakfast? You go in with the mindset that you aren't in a rush to do anything at all except get some exceptionally ordinary diner food and at least 4 cups a' Joe. Doesn't matter what you order, it really doesn't. You don't go there for the food. You go there to have a good time with friends. Also I consider breakfast at Brail's the first date my husband and I ever had. He refuses to admit it was a date, but he paid. It totally was :). read more

Unpopular opinion time... I don't like Brails. I used to live in the neighborhood, so it would come up as an option every now and again on Saturday or Sunday morning. I quickly learned to say NO thanks, I'll just go pick up something from Safeway. The food is very diner-y. It is nothing that you couldn't find elsewhere. I don't like diner-y food made with average ingredients and an average amount of creativity. If you do, scroll past my review. The menu: Nothing to complain about on the surface. It's got omelets, pancakes, burgers and the like. You can even find things like ground round and a rice omelet - things that are hard to come by in this area. The hash browns: A long rectangle of shredded potatoes. Grease. Some softness and some crispiness. Eh. The omelet: A long rectangle of egg, folded over. Eh. The sandwiches: Buttery, toasted bread with some filling mushed in. Eh. A bag of chips on the side. Eh. The service: Does what it needs to. Every waiter I've had has been in a hurry, because there is often a line out the door. I have had to wait for at least half an hour before to get my seat and another half hour to get my food. One time I sat right by the kitchen and heard servers complaining about a particular customer. It was entertaining at the time, but unprofessional and uncomfortable in retrospect. Yes, I know all servers complain - I just don't need to hear it. The physical setting: Lots of seating. Not dirty to the eye. So, ultimately, maybe there is nothing WRONG with Brails, but I haven't found anything special about it. So what you're saying is the food is best for slightly inebriated youths needing large quantities of grease and lightly seasoned comfort food. All at a price point even a drunkard with change from a twenty at the bar last night can afford? That is a prime clientele indeed. Went for lunch my first time there. Manager and a server had an argument right in front of our table. So it did not start out all that great. My hamburger was perfect. The onion rings were classic and perfect as well. Just well done, classic diner fare. I would recommend that staff argue in the walk-in, without coats. Brails is Hangover Heaven. This is the one place I always try to go to when I'm in Eugene. The food is greasy, the coffee is hot, and the ice water is plentiful. It's also close to campus, but off the beaten path that's usually traveled by visiting parents and alumni. You're won't be the only one wearing sweats and slippers or last night's outfit. And combed hair, brushed teeth, and deodorized armpits are NOT required. Expect a 15-20 minute wait on a Sat. or Sun. morning between 9a-noon as that's when all the sloppy scholars from the night before start stumbling in. I think they recently expanded their dining area to accommodate more appetites. To really satisfy those hunger pains, I highly recommend ordering anything that comes with hashbrowns, not homefries, HASHBROWNS! They usually serve up about a 4"x10" slab of hashbrowns that's perfectly browned and crispy on the top and greasy on the bottom. Get to know Joy, the older Asian lady. She's the owner, and she lives up to her name as long as you don't walk in there acting like a belligerent d-bag. On several occasions, a friendly greeting and a smile has gotten me free French toast and hashbrowns. It also helps to sit at the counter. read more

Brail's. It's one of our "dirty little secret" favorites, for when you need some really good grease starch and meat. We keep it simple here - skip the waffles and pancakes, go for the (flavorful and perfectly cooked) eggs sausage and hashbrowns every time. Worth going there just for the hashbrowns - golden crisped outside, almost as soft and creamy as mashed potatoes on the inside. BIG tasty portions - easy to eat and hard to finish. (They have to be good to put up with dishwater coffee like that!) Fun to watch the two cooks in the kitchen methodically churning out plate after plate of good diner food - like that Bonnie Raitt song, they're real pros. Great people watching too... lots of early-rising locals, and wasters dribbling in after a long night of too much fun. read more

The owner felt bad and was quite apologetic, but if you can't cook American classics right, you'd be better off not offering them at all. Go cook your Korean stuff and call yourself an Oriental joint but don't try to fool people into thinking you know how to make American food well when you don't. The place is rather tattered as well. There's much better places to eat in terms of appearance than Brail's. How the idiots in Eugene ever voted this as one of the best places to eat in the Eugene Weekly is beyond me. Ya'll come down to North Bend and eat at Mom's Diner, Pancake Mill or Dishner's and I promise, you'll wonder why the hell Brail's hasn't gone bankrupt. Not amazing, not awful. Brails serves its purpose of providing quick and friendly service at a decent price. The biscuits and gravy are a little lacking in flavor yet the daily specials Monday-Friday are reasonably priced at $4.25. The omelets cost what an omelet would cost around this area, in the $7-8 dollar range, yet I'm still a little nervous about spending 8 dollars on an egg with some stuff inside. Don't get me wrong, the omelets are good but when you're not using your financial aide check to pay for them, they just cost too much. My girlfriend: "Oooh, vegetarian eggs benedict." 20 minutes later: "I wish I had just got the regular eggs benedict." Avoid this place on the weekend unless you were up drinking until the wee hours of the morning. I wanna give Brails 3.5 stars....I think it's A-Ok....and I'm KIND OF a fan....so right in the middle... We came here Sunday for breakfast around 1130am. As we pulled in it looked like a bit of a wait. With my handy Yelp! application on my phone, I pulled up Brails and gave them a call to ask what the wait was like. I believe Joy answered the phone. If you've been here....I think you know who Joy is. The college "dudes" seem to love Joy as I heard 4 different guys say just that. When she answered I asked what the wait would be for 2 1/2. She said 2 1/2 would be no problem and no wait...COME ON IN!!! I guess she didn't realize I was 30 feet away from the front door. As I popped in, there was 4 more names ahead of mine....and we waited probably 20 min to be seated. That kinda irked me. If there's a wait...TELL ME. Dont say, No problem come in! But anyhow...... The place is PERFECT for the college bunch. Ran down....and cheap. I would say about %90 of the items were under $8. I had a Vegetarian burrito with ham added. No extra cost for the ham. THAT WAS COOL!!! Especially since i'm a carnivore. I chose Hash browns as my side item. I was really happy with the hash browns. They're the out of the freezer type that are a large rectangle. They're not quality like you might get at a diner in Idaho....but they are tasty....hot...and not giant wedges! The home style taters seem to be offered everywhere (Even at brails!) but this is the 1st place that i've seen that offers the hashed taters as well. I enjoy breaking my yolks over my hash browns....and I just cant do it with the home style!! The breakfast seemed to be a "cookie cutter" type breakfast....Plain jane, nothing to special.....but it tasted good and it was cheap! Wasn't like I paid $12 for a burrito that was horrible. I paid $7 for a breakfast burrito that was pretty decent. The place reminds me A LOT of Kozy Kitchen located on the Southwest Coast (Coos Bay/North bend/Myrtle Point) the way it comes off as a hang over spot. The service was OK. The guy who sat us and got our waters and drinks was actually a much greater help than our actual server. I dont like being hounded while eating.....but I do like having my drinks refilled and my wife enjoys getting her toast with her meal instead of asking for it when they give us the check.
