Not the experience we booked -- or hoped for. My husband and I love puzzles and often schedule day dates while our twins are at school, so we thought a Western-themed escape room at Brainy Actz Irvine would be a fun change of pace. I booked through Groupon and chose this location because it was close enough to work with our drop-off and work schedules. Unfortunately, the experience unraveled before we even arrived. After booking, I received a confirmation -- followed by a confusing email thanking me for booking in Bakersfield and offering a same-day add-on. I didn't take the offer, but it made me nervous that our reservation might be misrouted. Still, I stayed cautiously optimistic and followed the Irvine directions listed on their website. The email instructed us to arrive at least 10 minutes early, so we planned to be there at least 20 minutes ahead of time. But after circling the parking lot several times and failing to find the building, we parked to double-check the directions. Only then -- 19 minutes before our scheduled time -- did I receive a text saying they'd moved to Tustin, nearly 5 miles away and much further from our kids' school. We rushed over and arrived just on time, no longer early. I explained the situation to the host, who told me it was hard to keep up with texting everyone. Not exactly reassuring. Then came the next surprise: the Western-themed room we booked wasn't available. The new location only had one escape room set up, and it wasn't the one we chose. Instead, we were placed in a different room, which the host described as "easier." No explanation, no apology -- just a swap. There was no secure storage, just lockers without locks. We were told it was fine because the host would be up front the whole time. Yet when we finished, the host was gone, helping another customer, and the front door was wide open. Thankfully my purse was untouched, but it didn't feel secure. As for the room itself -- the puzzles lacked logic and cohesion. We love solving challenges together, but this felt thrown together, with no clear flow or reasoning behind the clues. We really wanted to enjoy this experience, but between the last-minute location change, the room swap, the lack of security, and the confusing puzzle design, it missed the mark. I doubt we'll return. I'm giving three stars because we did get to do a room, and the staff wasn't rude -- but the experience didn't match what we booked, and the execution felt sloppy. read more

I saw this on TikTok and wanted to treat my friends out. This was the biggest waste of $165. I wanted to leave after 10 mins. So boring. We got 3 small jars of paint, paint $30 extra for "guns", and the only blank canvas was 8.5x11in paint canvas. The walls have years and years of built up paint on the tarp. They don't even bother to change the tarp for the next group. $165?!? And the floors are SOOOO STICKY!!! The shoe covers keep sticking and coming off. This was the worst activity ever. read more

Absolute SCAM! DO NOT SUPPORT THIS BUSINESS! About 2 hours before our reservation, we received a text from the company telling us to go to their "new" location in Tustin. We arrived there and were told that we had to wait an additional 40 minutes to an hour after our reservation time, since their "new" location wasn't setup completely and they had overbooked. We waited and returned, and the room ended up being NOTHING like it was described to be--it was a small tent located in a back warehouse, NOT a decked out room like shown on their website. The protective gear was ripped, unsanitary (literally smelled of sweat), and the zippers didn't work, making them absolutely useless. The helmets were broken and wouldn't sit properly (it slipped down and blocked my vision multiple times), and the provided gloves had holes and were damp (??? Ew). The equipment provided for the experience also did not match the website description; there was no bat or hammer, just a couple of old pipes and rods. We were told there was a speaker behind the tent we could use, but this also did not work. The whole experience was actually laughable - we could not believe this was a real business we actually paid real money for. The guy working there was also rude! So I felt like a dork that I mixed up my days but very thankful that they accommodated to me and let me do the rage room. Thank you again. As far as the rage room is concerned. They do offer jumpsuits, shoe protectors, helmets with a shield and ear protectors as well and gloves. I went in the room and I paid for extra stuff to smash like electronics and whatever else they had. I think I got 4 glass cases and a keyboard and then old metal pieces that have been in the room for some time and are hard to hit. I don't think for 20 mins and the things I got to smash were worth it but it was fun. Also a girl at the end said next time I could bring my own stuff to smash. read more

My friends and I paid for the Pumpkin Smash Rage Room, and the entire experience was extremely disappointing. When we arrived, the facility was under construction -- something we were never informed about before or after purchasing our tickets. The place looked messy and unorganized. The "rage room" itself was a small shack with only one pumpkin and one plate per person, which lasted less than five minutes. The protective gear was dirty, full of holes, and some suits wouldn't even zip up. We were told we could use a speaker to play music, but it was shared with other guests who had also paid for their own sessions. The staff was rude when we asked about the setup and items, and overall the entire experience felt unprofessional and unsafe. It was not worth the cost, time, or gas it took to get there from out of town. I would not recommend this place to anyone. read more

We booked four for basic splatter paint experience for $45 each. we also booked for electric paint guns for $25 each and we booked for the balloons with paint another $25 each for a total of $360. The picture of the canvas online for the splatter paint looks way bigger than what we got. The canvas was tiny. No way we could've painted our name graffiti style like in your picture. We did not get three cans of paint each we got four colors total of paint for four people that would be one color each. The guns were not electric guns and the guns were filled with water so when you sprayed them, it watered down our art. The paint filled balloons we received were left on the floor and there were only 15 balloons for four people. We paid $100 for the balloons?? It also states the balloons would be hung up on whiteboard or paper to create art. Balloons were on the floor under the paint table. Also only two darts given for four people. this is totally not worth $360. We were there for 30 minutes. So disappointing and on Mother's Day. Also Brainy Actz has been advertising the game show experience on their site since November. I tried to book in December and was being told "a few more days until it's available".It's May and it's still not available but oddly enough the website let you book it. I feel bad for the people who booked the game show experience for Mother's Day when they arrived we were told it was not available. Take it off your website as an option! Brainy Actz asked me for a review when I followed the link it asked for initial feedback and if it's negative, they asked me to hold off on a negative review until they can contact me. There's not many late night escape rooms out there but we found this place and did Rise of Excalibur. The quality of the set design and sound system is not the best, but the puzzles were still fun. The puzzles were pretty straightforward. One puzzle in particular could be time-consuming and/or a nightmare but not impossible. We pretty much guessed on another puzzle even though we knew how to solve it. One of the puzzles didn't trigger so we had to "reset" something and re-solve it which worked. Our host was great and he even gave us a quick tour of their rage rooms and splatter rooms. For what was experienced, the price was pretty steep. Totally something anyone could do in their own back yard with a couple empty beer bottles or dollar tree glass cups and old keyboards from the goodwill. "Protective gear" was not protective at all nor sanitary. Suits did not zip up and were ripped leaving legs fully exposed. There was no music playing. They are still under construction and hazards everywhere. The girl employees were very apologetic and attentive. They put no effort or expense into this experience, you're in a 4x 4 room with cheap plastic taped up, which makes it stifling inside. Staff didn't want to be there. This review is for the Rage Room. A friend and myself wanted to do a rage room. It was the first time for both of us, so we didn't know what to expect. Upon arrival, we were greeted when we walked in. The girl at the front desk was friendly and she walked us back to the rage room. The rage room was a garage like setup with a shed with things inside to smash. Outside there were jumpsuits, gloves and helmets. The area designated to the rage room is not air conditioned. It looked like there was bowling pins there as well. Once suited up, it got really hot rather quickly. Since there is no air conditioning and with the jump suites, gloves and helmets on- you start sweating right away. And once you start raging in the room, it gets so hot it's uncomfortable. We took turns going in and did 5 minutes at a time, and then took a break when we traded off. It was just too hot and uncomfortable especially once we started hitting/ breaking things. We were done after about 25 minutes of this. We left before our time was up. And called it quits. Honestly there wasn't much available to break in the rage room. We were disappointed that there wasn't more to break honestly. I guess you have to bring your own stuff. I don't know. We left feeling so disappointed and ripped off. We thought this place was kind of ghetto. 3 stars is generous. read more

Came here after doing another escape room in the area. They were awesome enough to give us a 15% discount as opposed to the 10% offered on Yelp check in so it came down to about $28 per person for the 3 of us, which is super cheap compared to normal escape room pricing. Originally, we were going to do their Lost Point Lodge? I believe is the name... but we opted to change to the Wild West Room since our host said they didn't have any bookings so they can start the Wild West one now even if the website didn't allow us to book that time. We opted for the change because she informed us that the Wild West is their hardest room and that some parties stay in there for up to 1 hour and a half even. To me, that meant they are open to giving people extra time so if that wasn't going to be an issue, at least we can solve the entire room even if we technically fail by going past the 1 hour. The room was definitely hard and there were quite a few technical difficulties. Our game host informed us that a previous group took a piece of one of their puzzles so we just had to say the answer over the radio (we used radios to ask for hints and communicate with our game master since they can't hear audio on their end) and then she unlocked the puzzle. Also, in the beginning, there was an issue so our game master also had to come into our room. Totally not her fault but it ruined the immersion. I personally didn't like the puzzles in the room as nothing "wow-ed" me but it's a good room if you want a challenge. We failed the room but passed it 4 minutes after time was up, but technically, the timer wasn't paused when the game master had to come in to help with an issue so I would say we actually did pass? We wouldn't mind coming back for their other 2 rooms as it's a more inexpensive escape room. read more

Where do I start, I wanted an out of the ordinary date idea. I found them through Groupon and decided to purchase the pumpkin smashing option. I called and made a reservation with my redemption code. As soon as we arrived and entered the lobby, I said to myself "oh no". The guy makes us sign the waiver form, then follows by telling us they don't have any pumpkins to smash and if I would like to reschedule or he can add extra glass items and a keyboard. We decided to stay since we were already there. I got 4 beer bottles, 5 serving plates and a keyboard. The room was 6'x8', roof net was catching the sledgehammer EVERY SINGLE TIME. I was honestly embarrassed taking my wife there. We were done within 5 mins. Dirty warehouse, hot as hell, I doubt they clean the helmets and gloves. I'm pissed spent the money on Groupon, I can't imagine paying full price. Save your money and time. read more

Okay, so since yelp tossed my original review into the yelp abyss, I will keep this new one short and succinct. This is for the rage room experience. 1) The rage rooms and paint room share a small warehouse. Each "room" takes up a corner of the warehouse. They are incredibly small. The rooms are hardly rooms. They're just sectioned off corners closed off by particle board. One rage room is bigger than the other, but it's just longer and just as narrow as the small one. 2) You *can* choose your own music, but if someone else is on the Bluetooth, you either have to wait for them to finish or just suck it up and listen to their music. The group before us was breaking shit to Drake and Bone Thugs which I personally thought were interesting music choices given the context of the whole experience. Once you have control of the music, you're basically playing music for the entire warehouse. 3) You're given a couple keyboards and a box of glass jars to break for free, but anything extra (like keyboards) is $5 a pop, IIRC. You are allowed to bring your own stuff in to break, but you need their approval first. While it was fun to smash and break shit to my favorite jams, would I do it again? Definitely not. At $75 for my wife and I (with a discount) and 30 minutes or so of raging, it just wasn't worth it. Perhaps I expected a little too much, but I just felt like the experience was kinda lacking. I wish it was more engaging and I wish they offered more so it felt more fulfilling. It is a pretty damn good work-out though. I was drenched in sweat after I was done showing those tires, keyboards, and glass jars who was boss. Edit: Of course due to the nature of this type of experience, a waiver must be signed to proceed with the activity, but that doesn't mean I can't give you guys a heads-up: Be careful when you're going HAM on the shit in the rage rooms. My hands have been hurting since last week, especially my right (dominant) hand. It hurts to clench my fist or squeeze my thumb against my hand/palm. Left hand has finally healed, but noticing a weird sensation around my wrist. This morning my right hand finally feels good again, but with some discomfort still. I was invited to Brainy Actz to do the Excalibur escape room with some friends, so made the trek down to Irvine. We were in a group of 7, and 4 people were escape room virgins and had no idea what to expect. I have done my fair share of escape rooms, and would say that the majority of the locks were traditional lock and key or letter locks, with a few technological elements thrown in. It was not completely linear, so people can definitely work on different puzzles simultaneously. I will say that one puzzle was confusing with playing card suits representing both the category on the right side of the equal sign as well as symbolizing numbers on the left side of the equal sign, which as a math minor bothered me a bit because it was not clear (there should only be one equivalency and it should be consistent, or at least use a different font or size). Clues are unlimited via walkie talkie (though if you are trying to end up on the leaderboard I believe you can use two hints max), and sometimes it was difficult to hear even with the volume turned all of the way up. We were able to escape successfully with about 10 minutes to spare. Our group had fun, and for me this was a solid but average escape room. Of note, Brainy Actz also offers some other activities in addition to escape rooms, such as the rage room (breaking things) and axe throwing, which is pretty unique. read more

First time ever doing a rage room! So happy fond one in Orange County. This is an awesome experience! They give you all the gear to wear, just need to wear closed toed shoes to wear the booties they give you. Just a warning, it's a workout! Haha! You will sweat and arms may be sore next day. But so fun! They have computer parts, wood, glasses and other stuff to smash. You are welcome to bring your own stuff to smash, just need to get approval from staff before bringing in to rage room. I recommended doing this with a friend who can cheer you on while you rage! Oh, and make a music playlist as you have access to blue tooth speakers. We played Metallica haha, seemed appropriate. This was our first time at the Brainy Actz escape room, matter of fact it was our first time in any escape room. It was just the 4 of us, two adults and two kids ~8-12 years of age. The kids enjoyed the escape room as much as we did. Booking the same day was easy, Rick was wonderful in setting things up for us. We ultimately failed the western room but Rick was thoughtful enough to provide us with a walk through and provided us plenty of help throughout the journey. I thought the theme was very well set up and it gave us the impression we were really trapped in an old western keeping the kayfabe and not breaking the 4th wall. I would definitely come back here, and because of the great experience our kids are asking us about going to more escape rooms too. read more

We were super excited about getting into a room and throwing paint around but it was nothing like we imagined. First of all, I messaged asking if I could have more than 4 because online, it only allowed me to make reservations for 4, they replied yes and said they could update it, so I made the reservations and paid for 4, then messaged how to handle the other 2. No response so I emailed. No response. Tried again. Then called and got no one. Then sent a chat message and someone was able to help me and apologized that they were busy. Anyway when I arrived, only one person was there from my group and he said you have to scan the QR code to sign a waiver and that the worker guy told him to tell everyone. So as our group arrived, we instructed them and did that and after a while, no one came back to get us so we rang the bell. No one came out for like 5 minutes so we rang again and then a worker comes out with our protective gear. It's cool cuz you get plastic wear from head to body to shoe covers. However we go to the back and the worker says there's the room and the paint and canvases and you can wash your hands after in the sink in the hall and not the bathroom and then you can dry your piece on this rack or take cardboard with you. A gal in our group stopped him from leaving and was like wait, how do we do this, is there a method or instructions or suggestions? And he was just like no just be creative and we're a bunch of older introverted analytical types so we felt lost lol. Well, 6 of us go into this tiny room maybe 10x10 I dunno but we couldn't move. We all had to get out of the way for one person to go to the paint cans to dip and walk back to their canvas and gently flick their wrist. There was no possibility of grand gestures. We had an hour but we finished within 20 minutes and that's with shuffling. It was really claustrophobic and not only that, there was another tiny box next to us for raging so we thought we were about to die at any given moment. We all agreed that for the price this was not worth it at all. We like the concept but it was a room for 1-2 people really, and quite expensive for what you get. read more

I visited Brainy Actz and had a great time with my friends. They have three rooms which are very standard but still enjoyable. We only tried the wild west room, and it was fantastic with great details and lighting. The starting area is a nice touch and a very memorable experience. The puzzles were good and not too difficult, but some of the locks were hard to open even with the right combination. Despite that, it was still challenging and enjoyable. It was my first time going to an escape room since before COVID, and I forgot how immersive the experience can be. The staff was super helpful and accommodating even when we were super late, but they also weren't busy. I think this location is ideal for Irvine office groups to visit, given its prime location. Overall, I would recommend Brainy Actz escape room if you're looking for a fun time with friends or coworkers. read more

I went to celebrate 1 of my friends bday on 4th of July, we were 3 in total and wanted to do the splatter paint room. To start the "room" is a joke it's extremely small that we barely fit in there, they provide you with plastic cover for shoes, hairnet and pancho. There is not enough air circulation in there, neither A/C so it was extremely hot and I sweated a lot. They provided 5 plastic cups w/ different colors filled half way and 5 brushes in total for the 3 of us to share btw us. The "canvas" which it wasn't a canvas was so small as well. You can paint the "walls" which are covered with plastic but the plastic has already a lot of paint and you barely have paint colors so yeah no paint lol... Really bad customer service as well that they were sitting in a room chatting and they didn't even get up, only one person asked if we were leaving and we said yes and that's it, they didn't say nothing else. We just saw a sink and started cleaning ourself and left right after. $145 dollars for something that we could of get for less than $50 with more canvas, more paint and brushes. read more

Rage Room review: The idea is there for sure! But i can't justify the price for what we paid for. We had 4 weapons to choose from, and only so little to hit. You pay 40+ tax for beaten up metal and a small amount of glassware. You constantly have to re adjust the metal parts or you're hitting wood. The protective gear also isn't the most protective. No padding. Just a jumpsuit and some shoe covers and a helmet with a face guard. I feel the jumpsuit should have some sort of padding or you risk injuring yourself. The Bluetooth connection was a hit. You can choose your own songs to rage to which is a bonus for sure. Overall review is i wish there more to hit and more space to wind up and demolish. Adding things to swing a bat at would be cool. More glass would be cool without paying another 20 dollars and protective gear needs to be revamped. The idea is fully there, but there's so many things you can do to make it better. read more
