I've been going to Brasil since 2009. I love all their foods , however their steak special is a fail. The steak was so tough that it was like I was sawing it down! It has absolutely no flavor and the sauce on top was disgusting! I suggest they either take it off the menu special or learn how to cook a decent steak! I recommend the pizza, burgers, quiches . The first thing that catches my eye every time I enter Brasil is the abundance of fresh cut flowers found on the front counter. From there, my eyes find their way to the giant chalkboard filled with delicious offerings like chicken poblano chowder and tamales. Its taken me too long to write this review. Brasil has a good energy to it - from the vibes of the space down to the smiles of the staff. We've always had great customer service and the jungle/floral vibes of the interior and patio make you want to hang out all afternoon with your tamales and Latin-inspired breakfast eats. If its not during the blistering Houston summer months, I recommend finding a spot on the patio. It's as cosy and earthy as they come. My favorite meal I've experienced here is the pupusas paired with refreshing curtido and black beans. You'll notice that I'm always down for a Latin-inspired brunch. read more

My husband and I had our wedding at Brasil and found the experience to be incredibly dissapointing. The AC was broken, which caused the temperature in the room to stay at a steady and very sweaty eight-three degrees. Guests were quite uncomfortable, to say the least. When we asked the manager, Beryl, for something to be done about the heat, we were blown off and rudely shut down. After the wedding, we emailed her asking for some sort of resolution to the expereince but continued to be met with resistance and were actually blamed for the heating issue. We gave up after being left on "read" with no response or resolution. I work in customer service, so it is always incredibly discouraging to see someone NOT do the most essential/basic part of their job. read more

I could have run back to my truck and gotten one but I instead said "I don't. Do you?" To which the barista said "yes. They are a dollar. Hmm. Y'all. I researched it and did the math. I've been coming to Brasil for years. The Dunlavy/Westheimer corner in Houston is my favorite, and it's where I go to destress from work, relax, take friends who are visiting from out of town, meet up with my own friends. For many years, Brasil was my preferred spot to meet friends and bring guests from out of town. Then around five years ago, I heard the owner was rude and discriminatory. I hadn't witnessed it but I believed my friends who experienced it and we started meeting at Common Bond. Fast forward to now: I have started going back to Brasil because I've moved back more permanently to town. I want to give the benefit of the doubt because its a been a while and maybe the owner has changed. On my second visit last night, the owner passive-aggressively singled me out asking if I'm buying more food. I asked him if there was a policy and he said no, just that "everyone should be engaged with the restaurant." I told him I would keep that in mind and decided I did want to stay longer and think through some of my projects so I ordered a dinner special: 24hr braised ribs with Serrano polenta. I was very excited for the flavor combo. However the waitress came and took my number away mumbling something abt the food coming soon. It did not. I became anxious the owner would accuse me of not engaging in the restaurant again, so I got up and told the same woman behind the register. She later came by, mumbled an apology, and gave me warm food that started getting cold. I ate and left. I am a conscientious with how long I sit with my books at restaurants, especially now. But I felt so weird and horrible and like I should have confronted the owner and called him on his behavior. With all the reviews on this page, the restaurant should clearly state its "acceptable engagement with the restaurant" policy on the walls. By not doing so and being passive aggressive with customers, there is a strong air of elitism with the establishment. read more

Decided to come here, even after reading all of the poor reviews on the place about bad customer service and rude staff. I didn't experience any of that; my ordering experience was typical and my party was never approached to move or leave after we had finished. We enjoyed sitting on the patio and soaking in the beautiful weather. I ordered a salted caramel latte, which was deliciously rich, and two bacon and potato breakfast tacos. The breakfast tacos were ok; they came with cheese on them even though the menu didn't say it did (I am not a fan of cheese on my breakfast tacos). The management has struggled for years to find a decent level of consistency in the kitchen. The service too has been periodically bad, although not bad lately. It has its own ambience and I have been a regular since 2007. Today was another complete failure though. I didn't see any signs saying that I had to buy something and even if they have a sign, you guys need to blow it up and make it known. Not only that there were people siting there without food or drinks, I hope he spoke to them as well. Never in my life have I felt so discriminated or embarrassed to be in this cafe/ restaurant. He never brought me a water. And I believe he turned the service off for the Internet for my computer. The strangles thing, My friend and I could no longer receive internet service there. I guess we didn't get up fast enough for him. Whatever happened everybody else was still able to use there laptop. If you think you can come to someone and tell them they need to purchase something in order for them to sit there, and think I'm gonna spend my dime on you, then you're sadly mistaken. I had a meeting on a Saturday morning at Brasil. They don't have a parking lot but I found street parking close by as it's next to a residential area. The decor is nice. There's both an indoor seating area and a patio area. You order at the counter and then they bring your food out to you. What's weird is that even though the restaurant is called Brasil, I didn't see any Brazilian dishes on the menu. It was standard American fare for breakfast. I went with a breakfast taco with bacon and cheese and a side of hashbrowns. Breakfast is pretty tough to mess up but they managed it here. The breakfast taco was average but the hashbrowns were awful. They were dry and lacked flavor. Not impressed at all. The service was also lackluster. This used to be our go to place for carajillos... that is until yesterday. We stopped by to get carajillos yesterday afternoon and ALMOST had our afternoon dampened by the most disgustingly arrogant manager. We ordered two carajillos paid and sat down. They could only make one carajillo so they offered us a different drink or a refund. We opted for a different drink because we already had one of the two drinks in front of us. We both were really craving carajillos, had we known before paying we would have gone elsewhere. When we got the new drink it came with a a bill for an extra $4. It seemed strange to me that they would up charge us for a drink that we didn't really want in the first place. I understand the other drink was more expensive but this is customer service 101. We asked for the manager and she refused to drop the extra $4, took the new drink threw it in the trash and gave us a refund. Through out all of this she was extremely rude and unreasonable. Interestingly enough the manager was the one that took our order, made the drinks, and provided the worst customer service ever. So from beginning to end her mistakes were the ones that led to the situation In the end Brasil lost two customers, $14 dollars, and a bad review as opposed to $4. Great sandwich! I really enjoyed it! I loves the pretzel bun and the steak was beautifully cooked. The fries... best fries I've had in a while. Especially with the basil aioli. Definitely would go again. The reason I didn't give it 5 stars was the steak. Although it was great, I think it was missing some veggies such as onions or peppers or something of the sorts. It was topped with lettuce, but it didn't contribute much to the overall flavor although it was very fresh. This time, I did not try the drinks, but it seems to be their specialty! I came here hoping for some delicious food and cold mimosas. I ended up getting some pretty good food and mimosas however, the service really killed my vibe here. Would not recommend getting food here at this time since it's very limited. While I was ordering, the cashier never gave me a number. When I came back to check in on it, I sat there at the cash register, she looked at me, and turned around. I had to call her attention to ask her for my number and she rudely replied that she gave it to my friend as if I'm a palm reader. Secondly, when I came back up for water, she looked up at me again and basically ignored me. Not sure what I did but she was too busy doing something else. However, Ian, saved the day and even though he was busy, noticed I was there and gave me water immediately. Service plus 1. NEVER AGAIN! I have gone to Brasil since the late eighties and always loved the great food and atmosphere of it. I have dealt with the manager/ owner and he has his moments. He spoke to us 3 different times, first asking if we wanted something more, then asking us to give him our coffee cups and finally trying to take our water! I asked if they were closing (which I knew they weren't) I said there are plenty of empty chairs and tables so what was the problem. He said we need the glasses! I was offended and embarrassed that I had brought a friend there. He then came back and asked where we parked???!! ( the restaurant has no parking so most have to park along the streets surrounding the restaurant). I was shocked but answered, down the street and he said since he had no parking for the restaurant we might be taking up valuable spots. This guy is a grumpy old man who is going to put his business and his talented cooks out work. If you are wise enough to read all of the bad reviews you will see I'm not exaggerating any of this. If you spend your money to enjoy conversation and good food you should not be bullied into leaving. I will not go back and neither will many of my friends. The French toast was nothing special and the eggs benedict had hot dog tasting smoked salmon which was weird. Service was alright but the food was not good. Holy menu overhaul! Despite this being one of my professed coffeehouse favorites, I hadn't stopped by in lord knows how long (Hint: like forever, eons? Or four or six months. Same thing?). I was tasked with selecting an early morning spot to meet up with a traveling buddy of mine so I wanted to impress, at least a little. Brasil fit the bill. The Garden Bagel - a bagel of your selection accompanied by a massive bunch of fresh veggies, including beets, red onion, carrots, sprouts, cucumber, and lettuce and a generous cup of hummus and an olive. This thing is ginormous. Like, if you can actually polish if off in one sitting, you might be something of a beast. Can I make this at home? Probably. Would it take me less than hour? Probably not, because well, we currently don't have running water in the kitchen (one week now, argh!). Would it look as pretty? Hell no! Garden Bagel, you're swell! I do wish there were more vegan breakfast options. The Vegetable Tamale plate was similarly impressive! The citrus avocado salad concoction wasn't your run-of-the-mill wilted pathetic side salad, nope. It was chockfull of fresh greens and generous slices of perfectly ripe avocado. And the tamales were surprisingly delicious! Granted, the butternut squash and poblano tamales were unavailable, so I settled for two halves of the veggie, but man, they were great. I was perhaps anticipating the tamales would suck, so perhaps that's why I was in fact impressed. The veggie innards were fantastically seasoned and sautéed and the accompanying verde and red sauces complemented fantastically. A noticeable improvement could also be observed in the counter staff demeanor - tremendously friendlier than before! My friend and I were irritatingly indecisive when we visited for lunch and she wanted to order the discontinued Salad Sampler. The counter dude remained perfectly friendly, calm, and accommodating throughout our "Hmmm, well what's in that? Do I want that? What do you think?" inquiries. Love Brasil. Now that I'm a smudge older I still go for brunch after Soulcycle, or with friends, or just to relax. My favorite dish in the morning side bowl, hold the mushrooms please, and ad an extra poached egg. I can't forget the hot honey lavender latte. I didn't know the country Brazil (Brasil?) was known for blueberry pancakes, but the one I had here was spectacular. Mine was super fluffy and just perfect in every other way. Large portion too. I would even compare it to the one I had in San Fransisco at a popular place called Mama's on Washington. If you've been there before, then yes, it's that good. The menu calls the pancake a "stack" though, which didn't make sense because it only came with one, but whatever! I came here with a bunch of friends for brunch. Little did I know it was so close to Common Bond bakery (literally pancake throwing distance). We ordered so much food that the plates filled up our entire table space. I had the Tamale Breakfast, which consisted of scrambled eggs, two chicken tamales, black beans, salsa and guajillo sauce. Not sure what kind of sauce guajillo is, but the overall dish was good! It's somewhat filling and has protein - what more to ask? Maybe a little more food for my infinite volume stomach? Nah - for $9, that's not bad! I read that there were bad experiences with service here so that made me weary before coming. We sat outside and didn't have any issues with service. Food came on time and the staff was just normal. They offer plenty of tables and have both indoor and outdoor seating. On a nice day, I recommend trying to snatch a table outside, but good luck with that! It was a little crowded when we went. One of our friends had to stay and guard the table while we took turns ordering. Parking isn't so fun around here. You'll end up needing to park in the back neighborhood along the street. I was recommended this place by a friend because she said it's a great little cafe. Even though the coffee and food were good, I do not plan on coming back. Similar to some of the other reviews, what ruined our experience was the owner (man with short grey hair and glasses). He clearly has not read other people's reviews that specifically mention him as being the problem with his lack of customer service skills. Within 5 minutes of us sitting down, he comes up to our table and asks us how long we plan on staying. He probably targeted us since we had our backpacks and were planning on studying here for a couple hours. We didn't think that would be an issue since they serve coffee and there were some people on the patio doing the same thing. And despite buying coffee and food, he was adamant on making sure that we knew that he didn't want us staying here for long. We came here around 12 pm when there was only one other table in the dining room. If you are looking for a place to get coffee, study, or hangout with a friend, I highly recommend going to Agora or Common Bond on the other side of the street. read more

Let me start by saying that I loved Brasil and it was one of my go-to spots for years. I love the building, the outside areas, the fact that years ago they expanded the kitchen to offer a more full service menu, and the staff who are usually friendly. Here's the catch... I've seen the owner be so incredibly rude to people on so many occasions that I simply refuse to support the business and his behavior. If this had been a one or two time thing, then everyone has their off days; however, this was a behavior exhibited multiple times over several years. It's possible I saw it happen so much because I was there a lot. It was a great place to take people for a work lunch and walking distance from my office. It's a shame and hopefully one day a new owner will buy the place and utilize its full potential as a business with proper customer service. Until then, there are so many amazing places in the area--Agora, Campesino, Common Bond, Paulie's, La Sicilia, etc--with owners who support the community and respect their customers, why would anyone support a business whose owner couldn't meet this bare minimum? The food came quickly - I went for the breakfast bowl, which had rice, kale, cauliflower, egg, and avocado. It was super delish! The service was good as well - people came by 3-ish times over the 2hr meal to ask if we needed anything else. The seats aren't all the same height (chair vs bench), hence the subtraction of 1 star.
