Decor; 5 stars - the space is beautiful. Tastefully done, playful, and exceptionally clean and simple modern French. Service; 3-4 stars - they were almost on top of us, but at least attentive. Food; 1-2 stars, which is basically what this review is based on. Ordered the mussels and frites, and steak sandwich (split the entrees w my husband). The fries were so salty I think I drank a gallon of water after. The mussels were ok - have had better; and have had worse I guess. I did not care for the steak sandwich (shaved prime beef sandwich) which I also thought was over the top w salt and could have offered more steal. For a place that is so gorgeous, the kitchen is trying way too hard on dishes that should be simple and easy to please. I will be back for drinks but not to eat. read more

I really love this restaurant. I have been there twice and I can't complain about the food at all. The first time I went I had a delicious bourbon cocktail, the bar steak I think it was called, and their fried oysters which were probably one of the best things I have ever eaten. The only thing that bothered me was that the server didn't seem to be super knowledgeable but I forgave her because I'm pretty sure she was new. The second time I went not only was the food great but the service was as well. I was recently diagnosed with a gluten intolerance and my server was very understanding and helpful. I ordered eggs benedict and asked to have some hash browns because I couldn't have the english muffin. She had the kitchen plate it with the hash browns under the eggs so it was like I was eating almost the same thing as the friend I was with. I went to Brasserie for Valentines day dinner. I think we had a fantastic dining experience. First of all the atmosphere was right for the mood and stuff, and the waitress, was very attentive. We ordered Fried oysters with celery root remoulade, and pepper relish as a side. The oysters were slightly fishy, seems like frozen, but I hope I was wrong. each fried oysters, they put like a candied salted lemon skin, and it actually works very well with the remoullade and the oyster. The pepper relish is also a good pair for the app, very fresh, lemony, pepperish.. after that she ordered Foie gras and some sort of cheese raviolli. I think the dish of herself is good, creamy, savory and the pasta is perfectly cook. my entree was a seared black bass, with scallops and sot of assorted tomato broth (sorry i forgot!), and my bass was perfectly cooked, crispy skin, seasoned beautifully, and the scallop is also very tender. for dessert, she got cheesecake, and I got the nuttela hot chocolate. Both desserts are awesome, but my dessert was better (sorry! :D hahah). anyway, it was a good dining experience :) read more

This is a 2 part review the first part deals only with the Maître d and for that, I give ONE STAR!!! We arrived at Barsserie 292 promptly at 7:30 for our reservation, we might even have been a few minutes early. We waited why the Maître d sat 2 women ahead of us who did not have a reservation, they got a pretty nice table. We stepped up to the podium, not to a warm greeting but to "Give me a minute" so we did. He finally looked up I gave him my name and said we had a 7:30 reservation. He escorts us to this tiny table in the center traffic lane of the restaurant, we asked what about that booth or the table along the bench, his response was "They are spoken for". This guy reminds me of the typical Maître d from an old movie, you know the type where I should feel privileged to even be allowed in his restaurant much less question anything he says. We sat down and truly talked about leaving. About 10 minutes later the Maître d seats another deuce and he OFFERS THEM THEIR CHOICE OF TABLE! "Would you like to sit at this table for 4 or the table along the bench"?? I thought the one along the bench was spoken for?? By this point, our server had already brought us water and had taken our drink order so no point in leaving. As the night progressed and Mr. Maître d realized that we like to enjoy ourselves when we go out to dinner and wow maybe we want to keep these folks happy?? A dozen oysters for me an app for my wife 2 cocktails, a bottle of wine, 2 dinners and a cheese plate... Yeah, maybe the Maître d should not have ignored our request for a better table! He tried kissing up to us when he cleared our appetizer plates but too little too late. He even had a server that was not ours come over and ask us if everything was alright with our meals... OK, That's the ugly now for the awesome. Our server Nick was truly 5 STARS plan and simple. I even told him if it was not for his service we would have had a really bad night! He was attentive, knew the menu and was fun to talk too. As for the food I had 12 west coast oysters of 2 different varieties, which were outstanding, my wife had the yellowfin appetizer special which was a little bland, she used some of the Mignonette sauce from my oysters and it really helped brighten it up. For dinner she had the ravioli special it was truly outstanding and I had the Côte de Boeuf which was also fantastic. And we did share a very nice cheese plate for dessert. I truly would like to thank Nick for making what started out as a miserable experience a truly exceptional dinner. You know that feeling that a business try's too hard? You get that at Brasserie. The food selection, wine list, and beer on tap are great! They don't sport your standard bud, coors, miller, but rather cater to a higher quality pallet. The food isn't the issue, it's the over attempt at presentation. The butter comes in a small ramekin with a wax paper film of a B 292 print on it. This is one of a couple observations of the attempt to be high scale. I think the best restaurants, and the most upscale restaurants, aren't that way because of quirky gimmicks like this, but because their food is par none. Speaking of the food...I came in looking for a great steak, so I ordered their highly acclaimed steak frites. I don't know if you have been to a steak house, but the steak speaks for itself. This place is AMAZING! Came here but once with my fiance before a show around the corner at the Bardavon (Keb Mo!!!!). Although it was super expensive, it was so worth it. They were packed, and because they knew we were going to a show and wanted to get us in on time, they put us in this side room, which was actually way nicer because it wasn't as busy and certainly not as loud. I ordered the braised pork shank which came highly recommended by our waiter, and for good reason. It just melted off the bone! It was perfectly cooked, and even the vegetables were amazing. My fiance got the Brasserie Burger with french fries and it was out of control! It came loaded with a fried egg and a mountain of hearty bacon. We also ordered a few drinks, and their chocolate/espresso martinis were to die for. Will definitely go back the nest time we feel like treating ourselves to a fantastic meal. read more

I ate here last summer for lunch for a girls afternoon with my very foodie daughters. I'm still reminded of how wonderful that afternoon was between the superb food and good service and of course my delightful company even a year later. It was so good and such a surprise I took my husband there for dinner the following night. The best thing I had was the Steak Tartare. Loud, long cavernous dining room. Walls are covered in mirrors, Ceilings... tin. Kitchen is on point with many of the dishes. Mussels & Frites, Roast fish, Steak, Tagliatele and even the Meatballs are things I've had over the five times I've dined here so far. Staff is friendly and efficient. Bar has some great, hard to find beer and liquor selections and is a great dining option if you can't snag a table. Overall, I've been a fan since the day it opened... my only qualm being that I wish it was a little cheaper. (Difficult to get a table on the weekend.) read more

Easily one of the best meals (if not THE best meal) that I have ever had in the Hudson Valley. It was hard to believe that we were in the middle of Poughkeepsie, not to mention on a street that I was hesitant to walk down a few years ago when I was going to school there. It feels like you're in the middle of a chic little bistro in Manhattan and the crowd certainly lends to that impression as well. Service was absolutely spot-on. I think our server's name was Vanessa and she was fabulous, hitting that fine line between attentive and non-intrusive. A manager came to check on us partially through the meal and the busboys were always around with extra bread or water bottles. The staff seems to work as a team here, which is nice to see. Oh, and the food... incredible. I started with a special soup (creamy pea & fennel) while my husband got escargot. Both were excellent. They put fresh, whole peas in my soup and they were like little bursts of sweetness. For entrees, we ordered the duck confit and pork shank. Now, I'll admit that I am not the biggest pork fan and I only ordered it because I really wanted the polenta and broccolini that came with it. Shameful, I know, but it worked out in my favor because I loved the pork. Brasserie 292 has totally shown me the pork light. Lastly, we split the profiteroles for dessert. We both expected something small, even though it was priced at $9. Nope. They give you three sizeable profiteroles filled with gelato and covered with this super-rich chocolate sauce. We had one each and gave up, but it was only because we were completely full. It probably could have been enough for 3 or 4 people. So, a very positive experience and we're hoping to return for brunch in the near future. Quite a drive for us, but we're confident it'll be worth it again! read more

Food was only "ok", service very good, place suspiciously empy at 1pm on a Friday, decor was trying too hard IMO, and the booth was pretty uncomfortable. There were four of us and we had the frisee aux lardons (pretty good), mussels and fries (ok), 292 burger (passable/mediocre), and the Parisian ham baguette (not good, do not order). The bread was impeccable, the servers perfectly attired and very attentive. Agree with Cory M. on the "sexy" people. Tried to get the mille-feuille for desert, but was informed that they've stopped offering that (without bothering to amend their menu) because the chef couldn't quite figure out how to make it. Got the beignets instead (delicious). In all, we were fed, acceptably. Will not return. read more

As a group of seven, we all loved our meals! Thank goodness we were all in the mood to share as the menu was extensively intriguing and hard to pick just one. Some of our group opted for the tasty Prix Fixe Lunch menu, reasonably priced at $22, and others picked from the regular menu. Do have an appetizer or two, you won't be upset. Most all us in the group are Chefs and know that an amazing appetizers only meant "the best is yet to come". Do have some escargot and the wedge salad for sure. They make the best escargot I've had so far. Entrees were just as good if not better. I and two others had the succulent pan roasted cod that was resting in the middle of a magical pool of lobster cream chowder with charred corn, bacon lardons, sliced potato, cherry tomato, and cockles. Man if that doesn't make you excited you should check your pulse! The broth and some crusty bread, heaven. Found myself with a little dessert envy as two at our table ordered the caramelized banana tart with ricotta cream and banana gelato. Service was both prompt and polite. The building it's self is beautiful with classic tin tiles in the ceiling and is accented nice by the giant mirrors in the walls. The menu is not super kid friendly and there isn't a clear vegan section, nevertheless we were all ecstatic about everything we ordered we will be back again for sure! read more

I've eaten here 3 times and it's my new favorite spot in Poughkeepsie. The food is delicious and portions are really good. It's not one of those restaurants where you get a delectable but microscopic portion on your plate. LOVE the duck. Double love the hot chocolate and nutella! The staff is very attention and well-trained, though still a little green. Some of them are slightly hovery. It's a great spot for a romantic meal or a chat because you can actually hear yourself! Came in for a very late, 2pm, weekday lunch and we were the only patrons in the restaurant. The restaurant itself is very nicely laid out. Very NYC version of a French Bistro, and it works. Great lighting, tiling, mirrors, etc. Due to the late hour they were sold out of a few items, but we were able to order the soft shell crab sandwich special, a Croque Madame and a burger. One of the nicest brunches I've had! Friendly service who are dressed très chic à la parisienne. I think this is as French as it gets in Poughkeepsie and this cute little bistro is certainly on par with some French brasseries I've visited in NYC. The beet salad with pistachio dressing was scrumptious. This used to be a five star restaurant in my book. I do feel since the new ownership it hasn't been perfect like it used to be. I remember getting the mussels frites a couple years ago for lunch and having a moment of food zen where I just totally zoned out and all I knew at that moment was "I'm eating this meal and it is all I need to be happy right now". My wife and I would come to the brasserie for diner on a Friday night and be totally blown away by the atmosphere, service, look and taste of the meal from start to finish! Now my last few visits there just seems to be something missing. Don't get me wrong, it's still one of the best places for a quality meal in the area but it doesn't get me exited the way it used to. Now that I'm done being overly critical lets get to what they do right. The service is still very good. I always seem to get the same waitress (I don't remember her name, sorry) and she is a delight. Always friendly and attentive never without a smile. The steak tartare is still delicious as it ever was and the oysters are always fresh. I will still continue to frequent the brasserie for date night but will always be a little reminiscent for how it used to be. read more

We'll have to give it a second try. The waitstaff was excellent. The atmosphere makes you feel like you're in a fancy city restaurant. My beet salad was awesome. Risotto was great. However my cod was undercooked. I don't enjoy the chewiness of raw cod. And my husband's steak only saw the grill top for a couple of minutes. Did he ask for it raw? First, the positives: The dining room and bar are designed well--very cool, art deco touches, specials written on a mirror, lots of light, and nice cozy booths. We went for a late, late Sunday brunch around 4, right before dinner. Our waitress was perfect. The problem is, we left feeling robbed. We shared mussels and fries and crab cakes. The crab cakes are listed as an entree--I checked twice! They were presented on an appetizer-sized plate with a handful of lightly dressed frisee. The cakes were good, not great--they could have used something else seasoning-wise. The wasabi and mango sauces were dragged along the plate under the frisee, so we ended up eating the sauce meant for the crab on the salad. The cakes were small, too. A little under an inch-and-a-half in diameter, and about two fingers high. This is not an entree. And it is not worth $18! I've worked in the restaurant business most of my life. Entrees get rounded out with cheaper items, like rice or potatoes, and served on a big plate. Otherwise it's "small plates" or tapas! The mussels? Eh... fine. The fries were just average--they didn't have a crisp outside, a bit flaccid for my taste. Even the bread we ordered to fill us up/soak up the mussel broth was just OK... We left an excellent tip for our waitress, and left a hundred bucks lighter. We won't be back. read more

Yup...Sorry to say we had a bad experience last Saturday night. From the very nice waiter answering every question with "It would be my pleasure!" 30 times, to unremarkable almost bad, poorly cooked dishes, this was not a great experience. The owner was nowhere in sight. There were mostly empty tables with the Manager/Maitre'd seated at the bar eating his own dinner and responding slowly. Two fish specials had to be returned because they were truly undercooked. The bill for 4 was over $200.00 before gratuity and I had a $14.00 burger. Won't be back for a while. We were celebrating my daughters 21st Birthday and I wanted something special. How can a French Bistro not be considered special ! Well I wasn't disappointed. The Concierge was very nice, attentive and gave his attention through the serving of our first glass of Champagne. The waitress was also very attentive and the service was perfect. The food was fantastic and everything I expected with wonderful French cuisine . We started with the Escargot and a wonderful platter of meats and French cheese . Perfect ! My wife and daughter had the Lamb Sandwiches and I had the Smoked Salmon Tartine. Both plates were accompanied with some tasty Frites! Overall we had a lovely lunch with my daughter and we will keep this special neighborhood gem as our little secret! But then again , I just had to you all about It ! Fabulous Oysters ! Went for Sunday brunch & while perusing the menu saw a gorgeous tray of oysters on the half shell going by... Our server then told us about the Sunday $1 oyster special. $12 bucks a dozen for the freshest, plumpest, cleanest Bluepoints. wow ! My partner & I shared 2 trays with some crisp white wine.... If you love oysters this place is Heaven on earth, on Main Street, Poughkeepsie. Who would'a thought? Also shared a wonderful warm frisée salad and then Finished with a plate of waffles & fried chicken with warm maple syrup and a cappuccino. Best brunch ever. Went home and took a "nap":) read more

It's really terrific to go here since the atmosphere is authentic and fairly decadent for this area. Great cocktails, love the steak frites, duck, and oysters. Even the bread and butter is top shelf.
