And then there was one... After the kitchen fire that shut down Liverpool Lil a couple of years ago, The Brazen Head is the last place in the city that serves food until 2am with the kind of ambiance that makes you feel like you truly belong in this crazy city of ours. This place has been around for decades, and its location is such that zero tourists go here, all patrons are basically San Franciscans. The menu is quite extensive, we shared the escargot, she had the filet, I had the shrimp scampi. Delicious food in a great, intimate and cozy ambiance. Great bar, and they can shake a phenomenal vodka martini. The service is attentive and friendly. Only draw back is parking. No credit cards, cash or debit cards only. read more

Sunday nights after 11pm leaves low choices for good food. After seeing a shoe we needed to get sustenance. An old co worker had told me about this place years ago. So we decided we'd hut it up. Place is super dimly lit and the bar is full even at 11.30pm. New York pepper corn steak and beef ravioli picata with garlic bread hit the spot. The restaurant without a sign... way before it became the thing to be a restaurant without a sign. WAY before. It's tiny. It's on the corner. If you blink, you'll miss it. It's dimly lit, romantic, & charming in a storybook way. Not a fairytale way, but rather a Dashiell Hammett novel way. The kind of joint your favorite English or American poet would have surely hung out in. The menu is about bistro fare. Steak & fries. Salmon. French onion soup. The Brazen Burger. All very good, but the star is the steak. For a quintessential BH experience, order a martini at the bar. Or a negroni. Or a Manhattan. Basically, anything masculine, old school, & that would look great being sipped by Humphrey Bogart. It is tiny. Did I mention that? The dining room feels a bit like you're in a train car. I think every person should live in a city for at least a few years when they're young. One of the most memorable and formative times of my life was when I lived in San Francisco in the '90s, and one of my favorite places during that epic era--and today--is the Brazen Head. It almost feels like a secret club; no sign outside, no cheesy barker at the door, no billboards on Lombard coaxing tourists in. I only found out about this place because a friend of mine lived nearby and she stumbled upon it while exploring her neighborhood for a place to get a drink/meal without being surrounded by the Marina tools (yes, they were around 25 years ago too). The atmosphere is dim, relaxing, and old school. The food is great; traditional/old school food. I've always loved to share the French onion soup and the Caesar salad, followed by the pepper steak or the pork loin. But you can order anything and never go wrong. Prices are very reasonable too. And the drinks are great; this is not a place you'll find a mixologist with a bushy beard, handlebar mustache and eyeglasses that make a statement. This is where I cultivated my love of the martini (back when Eddie--who now owns the place--was tending bar and made the best martini I've ever had). I loved his martinis so much I found an overstock restaurant shop and bought the exact same martini glasses in hopes it would impart something magical into my homemade martinis. I often catch myself sounding like a senior citizen when I bemoan all of my old haunts that have disappeared in the last 25 years, but it's comforting to know that the Brazen Head is still here, hasn't changed much, and is still a fantastic experience. I've recommended this place to dozens of people who have never heard of it, but now consider themselves part of the secret club. read more

Hmmmm, what do I say that hasn't been said before about this place??? Dark: Check. Little lamp on each table: Check. Small Space: Check. Cool little bar: Check. Hidden treasure: Check. Butt cheeks on the window: UNCHECK Short but sweet: 5-6 times I have been here, love the joint. The 2nd time I was here, I went with 4 buddies, my nephew and his friend. Nephew and friend ~21 at the time. We hang at the bar, have a few drinks - my nephew and friend proceed to have two long islands and a beer. They are hammered before we even sit down. So we get a table, the friend is being a goof and he and my nephew decide to go to the car for something. We are sitting next to the window to the exterior, my back is to the window. One of my buddies say "oh christ, what is that fool doing??" I turn around and I am staring right at his butthole on the glass. :| Of course, others beside our table saw it, and, while my nephew and friend are walking back in, our escargot arrives. I slap a snail on the garlic-type bread they give, and, the host comes over and promptly throws us all out with me leaving my tasty little helix pomatia on the table. Not wanting to default to Izzy's (one of my favorite steakhouses) for my birthday dinner, I decided to try The Brazen Head. This place is easily missed if you do not know its exact location. No visible signs outside. Thank goodness for the GPS. The inside is tiny, hence, no reservations. First come first served basis, and seated only with your whole party present. Most of the tables only seat 4 people, with perhaps 1 or 2 tables for party of 6. So definitely not good for bigger groups. The atmosphere is somewhat strange to me. It is very dark inside. The only source of lighting in the dining area is the orange glows from dim table lamps. I'm used to small, dark places being intimate. But this is not the case at all. So noisy. For appetizer, we ordered crab cakes and apple&pear salad. The crab cakes were overcooked and bland. Dipping it into the mayonnaise made it a bit more enjoyable. The salad on the other hand, delicious! Tossed in light vinaigrette and topped with gorgonzola, apples & pears. Yum! I was eyeing the New York steak on the menu, but my sister wanted it instead. So I opted for the ribeye. Here are my thoughts about the 4 entrees my family ordered: 1) Boneless ribeye steak. Plain. The herb butter did not help with the lack of flavor. Also, I had asked for medium rare but it seemed slightly overcooked. 2) New York steak. While I enjoyed this one more out of the 2 steaks, I was not very impressed. The pepper sauce was delicious, however, the steak itself also lacked flavor. 3) Veal picatta. Delicious! Served with a lemon&caper sauce. So tender and beautifully cooked. 4) Salmon filet. Also delicious! Lightly seasoned with a great crispy crust outside, moist and juicy inside. Yum Yum! For my birthday dessert, I had a slice of chocolate cake with vanilla bean ice cream. The chocolate cake was rich&moist but not too sweet. Eating it with the ice cream was like heaven! All in all, it was a great dinner. A bit disappointed about the steaks. I had chosen this place based on the raving reviews about the steaks. Steaks aside, food was delicious. Our waitress was great. The manager was awesome. We all left stuffed&happy! =D read more

It was 'girls night out' and we wanted steak. My friends and I like trendy restaurants, but this night, we weren't in the mood for small, 'styled' dishes. After reading though reviews for restaurants in the Marina, I decided that we try the Brazen Head. Our cab driver passed the restaurant up the first time. Brazen Head is a small, unmarked, and on the corner (look for the green awning). Inside, it is dimly lit, lined with small, wooden tables/chairs, and a decent size bar. First impression: perfect for a romantic dinner! The restaurant wasn't obnoxiously loud and it was super charming. We were seated within 10 minutes. ** Note: Brazen Head does not take reservations and DOES get busy! The two of us went with prime rib, cooked medium rare. The portions were good sized and cooked to perfection. The horseradish has an awesome KICK to it, which seems to be rare these days. We were VERY content. I can't lie - the thought crossed our minds to order and share a second serving. Don't judge; we're girls with appetites!!!!!! For dessert, we went with the gluten-free chocolate mousse cake... I forgot the actual name, but regardless it was ridiculous!!!! Chocolate heaven, for absolute sure. The bill was extremely reasonable. The service was impeccable. The place was uber cute. It's late, around 11:30 pm. I'm hungry but I don't want fast food. I want some good fresh quality food! Where am I going to get that at this hour?? Enter, the Brazen Head! A late night bar and restaurant located in the Marina district. I walk in, and there's a host who I must say was very polite and welcoming. A good start already. He tells me it will be about 15 20 min to be seated. He tells me to have a seat at the bar, relax and he will get me once a table is free. It's not a big restaurant. It's small but with lots of character. It's like an old English pub. The lights are low. Dark with ambient lighting. The servers are dressed in black and white. An elegant feel to the restaurant. I'm seated to my table after only a 10 min wait. I look at the menu and my mouth is just salivating! There's just so many good looking items to choose from! Aged angus prime rib, pepper steak in red wine sauce, beef stroganoff, I'm giddy with all the great items to choose from! I see a soup on the menu that caught my eye. French onion gratinee. OMG the best French onion soup I've ever had! Aged gruyere cheese and mozzarella cover the soup. The cheese is melted. It's oozing in to the soup. It had a distinct flavor to it. It's rich and sweet. The onion soup is made even better once combined with the melting hot cheese. I also order the beef stroganoff as it is a special that night. Sooo good! the pasta tastes fresh and homemade. The beef is tender. The onion mushroom sauce is creamy and smooth. One of the better stroganoffs I've eaten. The service is also great. Very prompt with taking plates away, refilling water, and always checking up on me to see if I need anything. Great service, great food, great place! By far one of my favorite late night spots! There's not too many late night spots that serve great quality homemade fresh food. I sure am glad the Brazen Head is one of them. I really loved our whole Brazen Head experience (except for one part, but that's at the tail end) --- from the wonderfully friendly host (who was kind enough to tell us the wait time over the phone) to him seating us 20 minutes later when we arrived and to our delightful server. The ambiance is extremely cozy and you do feel as though you are spending a rainy evening in an English pub, no doubt. While the atmosphere is loud, surprisingly, we were able to have a very intimate conversation across our table with no extras "HUHs" and "SAY THAT AGAINs". The food was great - I had the NY strip with veggies and my date had the veal piccatta (loved it). Nice wine menu and even better dessert menu but unfortunately we had to skip that part --- but we won't next time. Now for the bad: it is such an extreme buzz kill that after the coziest two hours and as we're now locked in to a very intimate conversation, we chose the "debit" feature (no credit cards) and were bombarded with that silly machine on our table while they rang up their bill and typed in the tip that we had to say verbally (and then we had to wait for the darned receipt to print). UGH. We will do the cash option next time! read more

The problem was the mice :( at our outside table, right against the restaurant with a planter behind it, we saw at LEAST five mice come out and try to find food under the tables. They were huge. Our server was really nice and moved us, and even comped our drinks, but they then sat another couple at the table, who then also asked for move. Throughout our meal the mice were out and crawling under the tables, and even crawling across the sidewalk and further from the restaurant to check out our row of tables. The food was really just average, our server herself was super understanding, but I cannot believe that they didn't know the mice were there... there were several and they were crawling around under the tables for the duration of our time there.

I have never experienced anything like this. Refusing reasonable access to a person accompanied by a service dog is unacceptable and raises serious concerns about discrimination. The restaurant must educate its employees about service-animal access requirements and the respectful treatment of customers with disabilities. After this experience, I will not return, and I cannot recommend this restaurant to friends, visitors, or anyone who expects to be treated with dignity.

The biggest disappointment was the food itself. The burgers just weren't as good as I remembered. The bun seemed different, and the chips in the Tejano burger seemed wider and changed the texture. The chicken strips were very plain and didn't have much flavor, even with the BBQ sauce. It's sad because this used to be a place I really enjoyed, but based on this visit, we won't be coming back.

These days, you can have almost anything delivered as long as you're willing to pay for it. Still, I was honestly surprised (shocked, even) to discover I could order prime rib for delivery. To me, that's always been a "special outing" kind of dish--something you savor at a steakhouse, not in your pajamas at home. Recently, after a packed day, we had zero energy to go anywhere. Naturally, yours truly was craving prime rib, baked potato, and all the classic fixings. On a whim, I typed "prime rib" into the delivery app--and lo and behold, Brazen Head popped up! We've never been there, but it's been on our "must-try" list for a while. What better way to test it out than right then and there? The order arrived in a classy brown handled bag with Brazen Head's logo on the front. Inside: a generous serving of prime rib, a baked potato, creamy spinach, and a rich au jus. They also included bread, cheese, baked potato toppings, and sour cream. (I honestly can't remember if horseradish was included--but it would've been a nice touch.)Taste-wise, the prime rib was just a bit too salty for our liking, but otherwise the whole meal was delicious. We made a quick salad to round things out, and that was dinner--no driving, no reservations, just a cozy night in with restaurant-level comfort food. Apparently if San Francisco if you don't have at least three tattoos, smoke and/or are a regular at Brazen Head then you just aren't cool. Well my friends, I have applied tattoos from boxes of Cracker Jack onto my biceps, I've also been known to suck on biscotti and pretend they are cigars and last but not least I can fool the staff at Brazen Head into thinking I am one of their coveted regulars. My biggest beef with the City by the Bay is that late night dining options are in short supply. And for someone like myself who prefers to dine with Vampires this can really suck. But having friends who know where to go for that midnight NY strip steak is worth it's weight in gold. Brazen Head reminds me of Park Chow but with a dark seedy and edgy side. It's San Francisco cool even without trying. The restaurant has a comfort feel ala "Cheers". No fancy modern seating designed by some famous Scandinavian, no amouse bouche presented with tentacles from some endangered rare octopus, no sommelier will approach your table and try and up sell you a bottle that you really don't want. What you will get is an awesome neighborhood eatery that serves up quality food and with a bartender that will craft the best martini ever. Even you are not a regular, you will still feel welcomed. I am going to rate tonight's experience with not knowing the outcome till after the review Greeting at door 5*s, servers timeliness to acknowledge us 2*s. server served bread, wine and water to table next to us that arrived well after us, b4 we even got H2o 1* I had to ask for bread 1*, food this time 3*s. I asked for check server came out 10 mins later with drinks for another table that had just arrived, I said can I please have my check and she replied other people need things too 1* =13 stars divided by 6 actions=2.16666. stars I was truly disappointed. We popped into the Brazen Head last night and had such a memorable dining experience. We decided to try their lobster ravioli and French onion soup, and both dishes completely exceeded our expectations. The lobster ravioli was rich and flavorful, with a perfectly creamy sauce that complimented the tender pasta and sweet lobster filling. The French onion soup was equally impressive, deeply savory with a rich broth, generously topped with melted cheese and caramelized onions. They also served us warm, toasted garlic bread that was crisp on the outside, soft on the inside, and packed with a yummy garlicky taste. The cozy ambiance and friendly service made the whole experience even better. Whether you're craving comforting classics or something a little special, the Brazen Head is well worth a visit. There is just a fantastic vibe about the Brazenhead. I like to go with a small group of friends for a late-night casual dinner. The food is very good, we always make sure someone in our group gets the escargot and then share. The steaks are always great and the veal picatta is a favorite of mine. The best part about BH is the intimate neighborhood atmosphere. Like stepping in to visit an old friend. Eddie Savino the owner always makes you feel welcome. I almost feel bad for writ ting a review for this place due to the fact that I dig it so much and I don't want to draw too much attention to it and ruin the atmosphere. They make good, strong drinks. They make 'em perfect in my opinion. The other draw is the food. Their food is the shit, and they serve it until about 1:30 AM. We aren't talking shitty fries and some coconut shrimp from a freezer box. I had a dozen oysters, tuna tar tare, and the single best bread pudding of my life. The place is small and has no sign. The Brazen Head was first introduced to me by a male friend who lived nearby. Despite his preference for upscale places, I was surprised when he suggested we dine at the pub for our late dinner date. Upon entering, I understood his fondness for the place. It exuded an old-world charm and a hint of dark allure, perfect for a post-dinner engagement or nightcap. My fiancé and I went here for our anniversary dinner of four years, and I had never been to this place. We arrived shortly after it opened and there was already a line which to me feels like a really good sign of good food and service and we were not disappointed. The ambience was amazing. It was dim lit and it was pretty full so you could converse comfortably without feeling like you were being too loud. The appetizers came out which we thoroughly enjoyed. Went there with my dad last night. We wanted to have some steak so I decided to go this restaurant. It was nice a place with a great vibe. Outdoor seating was cool. Really nice cozy spot, nice dimmed ambiance. However, super over priced a they add charges for everything. A plain Cesar salad was $12, a small Chicken Marsala was $27, plus $3 because we wanted pasta instead of mashed potatoes. A coke was $5, then a $2 service fee, $1 for another fee for no apparent reason. This didn't include tip. Staff was nice but when we got the bill there wasn't a breakdown, so we had to ask what we were paying for and why so high, so the waiter seemed bothered by that. read more

We ordered escargot to try and they were super tasty! For my dinner, I got the NY pepper steak and enjoyed it. Even though the bar looks amazing, their cocktails are not great. I got a $12 whiskey sour that tasted like a $5 dive bar drink. Maybe I'll have to try a different cocktail next time or maybe I'll just stick to wine. I have been coming to the Brazen Head a couple times a year for more than a decade and plan to keep doing so as long as I have the strength to eat their magnificent steaks. You have to start with the French Onion soup and then I recommend either the pepper steak or the petite filet. Always medium rare. Such a wonderful old restaurant in San Francisco! Cozy, intimate with great service and delicious food! This has got to be one of the best secret date night spots ever! The food is not the best, although I have had some pretty kick-butt steaks here most of the time my food is just OK, not bad not good. When he eventually came to clear the table and take away the half-eaten steak, I said, "I just wanted to give you some feedback about the steak. We asked for it medium, but it came out closer to well-done." And this fucking waiter actually had the audacity to respond: "But you ate most of it." Like... yes, because you never came back to check on us. What exactly were we supposed to do--chase you down across the restaurant to tell you the steak was overcooked? I wasn't even asking for anything at that point. I was simply giving feedback. The fact that his instinct was to argue with me rather than acknowledge it was honestly the most frustrating part.
