Brazil by the Bay has always been a family favorite, and the food has always been amazing. That is part of why this experience has been so upsetting and disappointing. I did not always have food allergies. Before I became sick, I was able to eat everything, including foods I can no longer safely have. Because my allergies are now serious, I go out of my way to communicate clearly with restaurants before ordering. I understand that accommodating allergies can take additional effort, which is exactly why I called Brazil by the Bay before placing my order rather than simply assuming something was safe. I explained and listed all of my allergies over the phone, including my allergies. I also listed my allergies in writing on my Grubhub order so that the restaurant had them both verbally and in writing for the entire order. I specifically asked about the farofa and the beans. I did not simply ask whether they thought the dishes were allergy-friendly. I asked the person to read me the ingredients. I was explicitly told that the farofa contained only cassava flour and that the beans contained only salt. Based on the information the restaurant gave me, I ate the food. After taking one bite, my throat started to get really tight and it was difficult to breath. I immediately called the restaurant because at that point I needed accurate ingredient information to determine how serious the situation was and whether I needed to seek emergency medical care. What happened next was extremely disturbing. The person continued telling me that the farofa only contained cassava flour. I explained that my throat was closing and that I needed them to actually verify what was in the food because I needed to know whether I needed to go to the ER. Only after putting me on hold and actually checking did he come back and tell me that the food contained food I am allergic to and that I had specifically disclosed before ordering and in the notes on my order. This means that I was not merely given incomplete information. I specifically asked for the ingredients, disclosed my allergies, and relied on the restaurant's answer. The ingredient information I was initially given was wrong. During this conversation, I also repeatedly experienced being misgendered while trying to deal with a potentially life-threatening allergic reaction. What was almost as troubling as the original mistake was the complete lack of concern afterward. The person I spoke with did not ask whether I was medically okay. He did not apologize. He did not offer a refund, a remake, an explanation, or a manager callback. Instead, I experienced justification and repeated insistence about the ingredients until I pushed for him to actually check. When a customer tells you that their throat is closing after eating food your restaurant specifically told them was safe, the response should not be defensiveness. The immediate priorities should be determining exactly what ingredients were in the food, making sure the customer has accurate information for their safety, expressing concern, and figuring out how such a serious failure happened. I called again, the next day and asked to speak with a manager. I was told the manager was not there. I explained what had happened, gave my name and phone number, and was told that the owner would call me back. No timeframe was given. At the time I am writing this, I am still waiting for that conversation. For anyone with food allergies, I would be extremely cautious ordering here based on my experience. Restaurants cannot guarantee that every environment is completely free of allergens, and I understand that. But this was not a situation where I failed to disclose an allergy or made assumptions about a dish. I did everything I reasonably could to protect myself. I called ahead. I explained all of my allergies. I asked for the ingredients to be read to me. I listed the allergies again in writing on Grubhub. I relied on the information I was given. The restaurant gave me inaccurate ingredient information anyway. Food-allergy safety depends on trust. If an employee does not know exactly what is in something, there is nothing wrong with saying, "I don't know; let me check." In fact, that is the responsible answer. What is dangerous is confidently telling someone with serious allergies that a dish contains only certain ingredients without actually verifying it. I sincerely hope Brazil by the Bay treats this as an opportunity to completely review its allergy procedures. Staff should have access to accurate ingredient information, allergy questions should be verified rather than guessed at, written allergy notes on delivery orders should be taken seriously, and employees need clear procedures for what to do if someone reports an allergic reaction. Approved by my Brazilian friend, that's good enough to make this place 5 stars. Reminded her of lots of foods she enjoyed and us as people who don't often eat Brazilian food, we had a great time too. It's mini mart attached to the main restaurant. We came on a Sunday mid morning and since we had lunch plans later, we only snacked on a bit of the food. Service was super welcoming and inviting. It was like visiting a family member's or friend's home. Lady was super nice. Ambiance is very casual and you can tell that this is a community favorite too. Food came out quickly and was fresh. We got the: 1) Coxinha: -This is a popular Brazilian street food which is a deep fried croquette with chicken and cream cheese. -Delicious, light breading and the potato part is fluffy and the chicken is moist and all of the filling is plentiful and seasoned to perfection. We also got to try this with their home made chili sauce, nice delicious heat. Good stuff. 2) Pao de Queijo: -A MUST for my friend and I whenever I see them available. -Super yummy Brazilian cheese bread. I love the delicately light crisp from the exterior, slightly chewy dough, and of course the cheese inside. -Addicting and delicious snack. I can easily munch down several of these and the quality is good here too, especially since it's made fresh! We also got the bottled juices, imported in from Brazil. Mango and guava were like nectar juices, super yummy and the pistachio one was pretty unique. Our table also ordered the Brazilian lime alcoholic drink, but as a non drinker, I can't comment on this. I was looking at different ethnic foods to try out and noticed this Brazilian restaurant. The food looked and sounded very good and unique that I decided to try it with my boyfriend as we don't often eat Brazilian foods. It's located on Kurtz St in a plaza area where a jiujitsu dojo and a tattoo shop are, behind the Pechanga Area and the open parking lot for Kobey's Swap Meet on the weekends. There is a parking lot and ample free street parking around the area. I got their Moqueca because the description caught my eyes immediately - fish, shrimp, and coconut milk stew = delicious seafood curry! The shrimp and fish of the moqueca were cooked perfectly, soaking in the stew with coconut milk. I honestly thought of it as a curry dish over a stew. My boyfriend got their Garlic Picanha. The steak was perfectly cooked as medium rare with vigarete and farofa on the side to complement the steak. It came with fries which was interesting as there was rice as well. But the fries were soooo good. They were very crispy and well seasoned. Having good fries definitely gives a huge thumbs up to the restaurant! This restaurant is definitely a hidden gem! We are not from this area so I had to yelp a good Brazilian restaurant for our early dinner today. We started with the famous pão de queijo as an appetizer. The order came nice and hot! Hubby ordered the steak stroganoff, he said the flavor was good but the meat was kinda tough. I ordered the moqueca and it tasted good with five large shrimp and a good amount of fish. We will come back next time we are in this area to try other dishes in the menu! Our waitress did not write down our order and because of that my Brazilian cheese bread never came out. When I mentioned it, she said she "didn't know I ordered that" and I explained that this is exactly why writing orders down matters. A huge roach came out near the front area and one of the staff members just smashed it and kicked it outside the front door like it was nothing. Brazil By The Bay is not exactly near a body of water. The restaurant is rather hidden behind the old Sports Arena in the Midway District. It has been a long time since I last visited this spot which has an adjoining market selling Brazilian groceries. You have to come down Hancock St which is one-way and then you pull into a small parking lot at the bend with Kurtz St to reach the location. Four stools were available at the bar while the rest of the dining area had enough tables to seat about 30 customers. The front side of the two-page menu listed over a dozen appetizers and a similar number of entrees. Many of the choices were Brazilian-based. The back side had more American style fare like sandwiches, salads, burgers, protein bowls, beverages, and desserts. I began by picking the first appetizer on the list which was a Coxinha. This was a classic breaded and deep fried croquette stuffed with chicken and cream cheese. The only problem was that it cost nearly $5 for a medium size fritter. For an entree, my choice was the Garlic Picanha. A 9 oz piece of top sirloin steak cooked medium rare as my preference was served with rice, french fries, farofa, vinaigrette, and topped with homemade sauteed garlic. The meat was okay, but it could have been more tender and juicy. The tomato in the vinaigrette brightened up the dish with acidity. The service from the staff was adequate, however the quality of the food for the price didn't quite meet a four star level. read more

We ordered feijoada, picanha, and a chicken pastel. The picanha, which we ordered medium well cooked, was incredibly hard. The feijoada looked like it was being reheated several times, did not taste good and it actually made me very bloated afterwards. The pastel was ok, not awful, not good either. I asked if it came with catupiry and the server, who proudly couldn't speak any Portuguese, said she doesn't even know what catupiry is. That's the kind of atmosphere at "Brazil by the Bay" which, by the way, is not by the bay. In fact, the neighborhood struggles with cleanliness and visible poverty. We had a work trip in San Diego and took a lunch break here and was so pleasantly surprised by all the good Brazilian food here. My fiancé is Brazilian and we can never find a nice market near us in OC. We got the picanha sandwich and it was sooo good, we want to eat it again , it's a skirt steak sandwich with onions and cheese in a toasted baguette with fries! Hits the spot completely! We also ordered chicken stroganoff to go and got a bunch of goodies from the mini super market. Looks like a family owned place and the server and store manager was really nice to us! Even when SHARING the cocktail with my friend (a fully grown adult male for what it's worth) and both of us having what I would consider a respectable alcohol tolerance, we both walked out tipsier than we've ever been from a single cocktail. We've been here coming for years and typically the food is amazeballs. My favorite dish is the Moqueca which is has stewed fish, shrimp and vegetables sauteed in coconut milk......so appetizing! And of course, what is a visit to a Brazilian restaurant without having Feijoada! It's the national dish of Brazil with simmered pork, beef and black beans with sides of rice, collard greens, farofa (toasted cassava) and oranges slices (it supposedly helps with digestion of Feijoada). It's juicy with such well developed taste. The restaurant is a small venue with colorful personalities and an atmosphere that embraces Brazilian culture. The staff is always cheerful and easy going. The food is typically on point but unfortunately our last two visits were disappointing in terms of the availability and quality of food. We specifically brought our out-of-town guests here to taste the Feijoada but they did not have the dish available, both times. That's odd that their signature dish would not be available? So, as an alternative we tried the grilled tri tip plate. To our dismay it was served over cooked and at room temperature. I'm hoping that those experiences were just simply "off-days". The customer service was the worst one ever; the lady who received has did not have any patience to explain about the food and when we asked for recommendations, she just left leaving us speaking alone; I did ask for Sprit and she brought me water with gas and got all our orders wrong.
