I was kind of shocked to read all the bad reviews. I got the ham and brie sandwich. The only thing is I like my brie cold and they melted it but otherwise everything was great including the ceasar salad they made on the side. I think what made the sandwich was the bread. It was crusty and air and excellent. I took my sandwich to go but service was great. I was thinking this is the perfect place to bring a book to study during the weekend. Unreal. I really wanted to like this place. The service was absolutely terrible. The food came out cold. The wife ordered a crêpe and it came out cold with the cheese rehardened. My eggs Benedict was cold. After waiting a half hour for a refill for my coffee I got up and for myself I cup. Ordered a hot cocoa which we never received. Our server told us that they didn't have enough cups in the back which is why they brought out for drinks one by one. We will not be back. read more

With a name like bread and chocolate, this place should be amazing -- yet it feels less like a bakery and more like a diner that happens to serve a few desserts. We had lunch here after a full morning of apartment-hunting and we were starving. I had the salmon salad, which was just edible (the salmon was actually far better than the salad -- the salad dressing was oddly bitter, as was the cucumber, and the greens weren't exactly fresh). We also shared a chicken panini, which was equally unremarkable -- all of this to say, Bread and Chocolate doesn't do anything to offer refined food (why not add some nice veggies and a cool aioli or pesto or avocado to take a boring panini and make it a bit tastier?). read more

I tried this place because I live around and I wanted to find nice pastries and bread. So I just came by fews times just to take breads and not sitting inside for lunch. And it felt like the cashier didn't like to serve people if they didn't sit. They were always very slow, most of the times no one was around the register. They don't always put the bread on the basket so you never sure if they have bread or not, same for the pastries. I just tried two fruit tarts and they were really gross. Plastic like, pastry cream not good, sweet dough no good and the fruits were fix by some agar agar. Really big disappointment. read more

I would love to give Bread and Chocolate more stars, but it is consistently inconsistent. Their paninis are a good bet, make sure you imply you would like the salad that come with them (normally) or they will give you a piece of fruit. no joke. like a cube of melon. The salad is much better. The brunch is OK. I have tasted some of the crepes, I can't recall which one (it has berries in it) but the fruit obviously was preserves, from a jar/can, not the fresh variety they advertised on the menu. They tend to overdo it on the toppings, so if you don't like A LOT of flavor of fruit or chocolate on your pancakes, ask for it on the side (and pray they remember to tell the cooks). The service is beyond poor. They will deliver half of the order and then forget about you, not come back to check on you for for ages, and if you run out of water, good luck! More often than not your order comes out incomplete, incorrect or cold. This is definitely not a sit down, eat and leave kind of place. Be prepared to hang out for a good chunk of time. There is a patio, which is great for those lazy Sunday mornings, but beware, they won't serve booze (champagne) outside. Their pastries, however are divine, cakes and breads are so delicate, and all are tasty...They are a little pricier than I would like, but you pay for the taste. The coffee- the cappuccinos (and frozen cappuccinos) are soo tasty. Much better than the Starsucks, on the corner. read more

The service was really really bad and when we left the server a small tip (still leaving her a tip, mind you), she literally came over and yelled at us and called me a bitch. I first came to B&C in the 70s....at their downtown location. I've been walking over to the Chevy Chase store off and on since the 90s. Yes....the menu is tired and perhaps too ambitious. And you have to approach the staff just right.....speaking Spanish helps. (The older guy with glasses is from South America as is one of the women). Once you establish that connection...you're golden. I primarily stick to the omelettes....never had French Toast which everyone seems to like. Their breads are usually quite good. The birthday cakes are fabulous and very well priced. Overall, you get what you pay for...a moderately.priced breakfast joint that happens to open at the crack of dawn. Btw...Pumpernickel ' s is a block away and is a more casual albeit harsher service experience.I love it. read more

Really a 3.5. Their brunch (entree + juice + coffee + pastry basket) is generous and more than enough to feed two people. The coffee is not bad and served in cute china. I also had their chicken pot pie once, which was really good. It's not a bad place to sit, work on your laptop, and drink some coffee. I visited with my mother, who has been before. She would talk about their homemade bread selections. Entering the establishment, no one greeted us, we seated ourselves, and waited a little over 15 mins until someone acknowledge us. (Give or take..... only 2 tables with customers) we decided to dine in, The food was amazing. We ended up ordering the salmon Benedict, omelets ( which was suppose to come with bread), monkey bread and bread buddin. My mother inquired about the home made bread, if we were able to buy as a loaf, the waiter was so rude, and quick to dismiss us. Throughout our meal, I had to keep going to the cashier upfront to request service, as our waiter was no where to be found. As I paid for our meal on our way out, the waiter followed me and said "next time you will be charged for the bread $3.00". (Which by the way she did not serve with my omelet ) I mean, if we inquired about their homemade bread it was because we where interested in buying a loaf. A friend and I stopped in for a snack/light meal one late afternoon. While we were disappointed they didn't have items that appeared on their menu on their website (which were the reason we chose them,) we found the service and the food to be very good. The owner spent some time with us talking about their menu and just being friendly and the waiter was helpful and attentive. We had the chicken flatbread and a caprese salad and enjoyed both very much. The flatbread was particularly good with a rich base and a lovely combination of chicken and vegetables on top. The server was very surly throughout the whole meal, didn't check on us during our meal and was downright rude during checkout. When trying to split the check at the cash register (because he didn't bother to ask prior to bringing the check), he said "hey lady, just give me your credit card" to each of us as he loudly sighed. Four of us went for a late lunch, around 2p. The service was terrible, the food less than mediocre. The salad had rotten greens. An omelet was dry, overcooked. A panini was burned on the outside, cold on the inside. One woman employee looked like she had had a terrible, no good, very bad day. She stayed by the counter and kept screaming across the restaurant for "Maria," who was evidently downstairs. As we ate a male employee vacuumed and swept all around us. The restaurant was not busy. The hours are until 7p. Therefore, I didn't understand why service was so slow and poor, why the food was prepared so poorly, and why anyone would think it's a good idea to do clean-up by diners as they eat. So, I've seen this place countless times, while driving back from shopping in Friendship Heights, and always think to myself 'damn - I need to try that place!' Well, today was the day that I stopped in, and boy, was I NOT disappointed. I'll preface what I'm about to say with the fact that I LOVE LOVE LOVE pastries and sweet things of a high quality. I've had great pastries all over the place, and these were DELICIOUS. I happened to be with my boyfriend, so we picked up 3 different things (a vanilla napoleon, an eclair, and a chocolate espresso cupcake). My boyfriend, who's quite picky when it comes to pastries, commented how soft and creamy the eclair was. I took a bite of the napoleon and had a similar remark - solid, delicious, sweet, but not overly sweet. The cupcake? Also a good choice! The cream is light, not overwhelmingly thick and sugary. I wish we had stopped in earlier in the day, as it was already late and they looked like they'd pretty much emptied out on their pastry selection, as there were only a few items left. Yes - I would've / could've ordered more! They had fresh bread (Challah, Italian, etc), croissants, coffee drinks, advertise that they use Lavazza coffee, and had a rather large fancy espresso machine, so I think even their coffee would be a solid choice. I do plan on returning when I have more time and actually sitting and enjoying a pastry, meal, coffee, etc. I'll let you all know how that goes when the time comes. read more

Menu seemed interesting; I was very excited to try the latkes. One of us ordered eggs benedict, another the shakshuka eggs benedict and one of us ordered the jambon and brie sandwich. Apparently they were out of latkes but decided to take certain liberties with our order without our consent. The Shakshuka eggs were just two poached eggs smothered in sauce. Did they think I wouldn't notice that under that sauce rested two sad poached eggs, sans bread, or latkes? I would have tolerated a bread substitute but instead they decided for 11 dollars, just two poached eggs was substantial and a fair trade. I sent it back without trying it, and I didn't order anything else. It wasn't until I received the bill that I noticed that they charged me for the wrong sandwich. My son told me after he ate his food that he received the wrong food but didn't mention it. So basically, everything was wrong. The server was ok but clearly not very communicative. What a disappointment. We went yesterday afternoon for dessert after dinner and said that we should've gone somewhere else. We were seated quickly and our server, Brad, come to our table with water. There was no greeting from him or sense that he wanted to be at work (or to work period - there are plenty of people out there who would like a job). When asked "what is in the bread pudding?", he commenced to tell us what the slice looked like (we know what it looked like because we saw it in the case). Figuring that he did not understand the question, a more detailed question was posed "are there nuts or raisins in it?" He did not know, so he needed to ask. The other three of us ordered (tres leches cake, cheesecake, and one bread pudding). About five minutes later, he returned and said that there were raisins in the bread pudding. Once again, due to a nut allergy, the question about nuts was asked AGAIN. He walked away, brought us the tres leches cake and cheesecake, and went to ask about the nuts. When he returned, all he could say was "we think it has nuts." WAIT...with nut allergies as prevalent as they are, you don't know?!?! That is unacceptable. Sooo...instead of two bread puddings (one that still had not been brought to the table), it was going to be one bread pudding and one lemon bundt cake. He took that order and brought back the bundt cake...still no bread pudding. About five minutes later, he asked the guy behind the counter, if they had bread pudding...he opened the bread pudding and went to warm it up. The bundt cake was cold, so we asked the one behind the counter if it could be warmed. He said no because it has sugar on it and it would melt. What kind of bogus excuse is that??? The bread pudding FINALLY came out (after the other three of us were basically done eating). The check was brought to us, but we had to stand around and wait for Brad to come get the folder. Once he did (one of us actually had to take it to him), he saw that it was cash and credit card. We had to explain to him to enter the cash first then put the balance on the card. Based on the look on his face, he either didn't feel like doing it or didn't know how. Luckily, for us the other guy behind the counter did. We got the bill paid and decided never to go back. We don't know if Brad was not feeling well, if he was new, or if he was tired, but we won't be going back to find out. read more

The best French Onion Soup I have ever had. The service is really slow, but they have good coffee from Lavazza. The pastries are made fresh everyday. I would recommend the California Sandwich (avacado, tomato, croissant, turkey, lettuce) or any of the pastries. The chocolate diamond is heaven. Potato Leek soup isn't bad either. This is perfect for a tiny escape into a bistro-esque restaurant Parisian style. Good for afternoon late lunch. read more

So based on two very good reviews from dear friends of mine, I decided to try Bread and Chocolate against the warning of all the yelp-ers on here. I have to say I had a wonderful experience. I got the brunch: chocolate/banana french toast, european artisan bread basket and a side of bacon. My friend got the southwestern panini and a sunny side up egg. The food wasn't out of this world, but it def was good. Wouldn't recommend the chocolate banana french toast for those who don't really love sweets, but it was good. I also ate quite a bit of the panini (it was really good :) ) But the service was great - didn't wait long at all and very attentive..filling water glasses and making sure everything was good. read more

This place is adequate--very decent food, very stuffy crowd as to be expected in Chevy Chase. I could eat the French Toast all day, especially the varieties which are fused with fruit. My friends who like coffee seem to enjoy it, but I focus on the things that involve butter and powdered sugar. If you are going to go, go when it is slow. If it's crowded or there are children there, it greatly detracts from the appeal. But it is definitely a decent option on a lazy Sunday. read more

I went to Bread and Chocolate following a family event. They were very accommodating and we able to seat 12 people at 11am on a Saturday morning with very little notice. They have an extensive menu and there were lot of appetizing choices. After going back and forth, I finally settled on the croissant sandwich with scrambled eggs, turkey sausage, and cheddar cheese. I have to admit that I was a little disappointed with the sandwich. The croissant as a bit greasy for my taste and the eggs were overcooked. The turkey sausage, to my surprise was excellent! Those around me who ordered a sandwich, the feta and spinach omelet and the nutella pancakes thoroughly enjoyed their food, and I have to admit that it looked delicious! The waiter was attentive to such a large party and the room all came out at the same time. The bakery items in the front cases looked absolutely delicious and I can see myself returning for a different menu choice, or at the very least a cup of coffee and a slice of cake. read more
