The bf and I stopped here and grabbed food, drink and dessert. Our first experience was fantastic. Our server was attentive but not annoying. She was very visually "Portland". She never left us waiting and knew what she was talking about. We ordered 2.50 IPAs (boom-shocka-locka!) and had the basil bacon sandwich, which was fantabulous. The best part: the banana cream pie with chocolate crust. Oh my dear baby Jesus... We couldn't handle how amazing it was. Best I've ever had. Oh and their bread was so delicious. Unfortunately, we went back again for the pie and found out they were out (at 7:00pm?) but they offered us a banana waffle. Not the same. We passed. I got the shrimp sandwich, which was good. Third time we went back and brought friends for the banana cream pie and they took it off the menu! Their special was a banana cake which they were out of AGAIN! Guess what they offered us? The banana waffle. IT'S NOT THE SAME. Breakfast and dessert are not interchangeable people! On top of it, our server was not personable or ever around. Very mediocre. The food is good but without the best part, I'm not sure how often I will go back. Their menu has great things to offer and it's executed well, but it's not cheap. I feel like I missed this really great brunch place everyone is talking about? Did I stray and walk into the wrong restaurant? Our food took 25-30 minutes to come and the restaurant was about 1/3 full or less. Bread and Ink Cafe is not that great. For brunch my fiance and I had a couple of entrees: mine was the Verde Enchilada and my fiance ordered Max's mixed up skiller breakfast. Whoa, talk about dissapointing on both fronts. Notice that Max's skillet dish lists that it's "Everything you always wanted for breakfast without the eggs!" There are three meat ingredients listed BEFORE the potatoes, but when we picked apart and looked for meat in our dish, we found a whopping 4-5 pieces of diced meat in a huge skillet of potatoes. It's hard to tell because they cubed meat and cubed potatoes kind of look alike. So, we sent the dish back and FINALLY got what we really ordered. But the problems continued... Remember I mentioned the food took a while? Well, it didn't matter. I was still served my luke warm enchiladas that had probably been sitting in the window for a while. The salsa didn't look fresh anymore and was beginning to form a crust on my plate (drying out perhaps?). The tortilla was a soggy mess and the ENTIRE enchilada was drizzled head to toe with sour cream (not like a pretty garnish, but head to toe). I looovvee sour cream with green enchiladas, don't get wrong, this one was swimming in it. Overall, I'd give Bread and Ink a 3/5 because our server also didn't get my hint that the skillet dish was awful until I finally and plainly said, "we'd like the kitchen to remake this because we can't find an ounce of meat in there." I didn't complain about the enchiladas because at that point I just felt like I was annoying the server. Apparently it's a waffle kind-of-place though, so maybe it's all my fault for wanting a savory breakfast? Give it a shot. A lot of people like it, but it's just not my thhhaannng. read more

I had heard so many great things about this place and for the most part it didn't disappoint. Invited to have lunch here with a friend in the mid afternoon on a weekday and it wasn't crowded. Big windows let in a lot of natural light so it was a nice lunch atmosphere. The food was just a little less impressive than I expected- had the chicken and waffles. I didn't like the waffles but I think it's just the style I didn't like and lots of other people probably would enjoy them. The chicken was fantastic. I'm not sure where to begin, except to say that my son and I will never make the mistake of returning. The food was mediocre at best. I ordered the migas scramble, and my son ordered the chicken and waffles. The food was overpriced for what it was. Before eating at Bread and Ink Cafe, I thought that Denny's was the epitome of bland tasting mediocre food. Now in retrospect, Denny's looks good, and is not as expensive. The silverware placed on the table had dried crusted food on it. I had to ask numerous times for salt, pepper and sugar as our table was lacking it. The 2nd page of the menu was missing printing, so the waitress had to bring another. Basically, it was a let down. There is a restaurant a block away called the "Cup and Saucer" that is delicious, friendly and more cost effective that I would recommend any day of the week. read more

They have hash browns which I love if they are done right and this place does them right. Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Not many places do hash browns these days. I usually have the mushroom and spinach omelet and it is done just right with freshly sautéed mushrooms and spinach folded into a softly scrambled egg. One of the bread choices is baguette and it is a lovely accompaniment to the omelette. The place can be noisy, it can be crowded too as morning wanes but the breakfast is so good it is worth a bit of socializing with neighboring diners. read more

Our server (I will get his name before we leave so you can request to be in his section every time) is amazing and funny and refreshingly honest. His first suggestion for a glass with a caramel rim covered in cinnamon sugar and full of an apple cider mimosa was life changing! We could have stayed all day drinking them! We shared their waffle with caramel, cardamom sauce, fresh whipped cream and stewed apples and some extra crispy bacon. Our server graciously offered to split it for us with everything on the side per my request (my apologies to the kitchen for being that table:/). They nailed it! We savored every. Single. Bite. And I seriously considered drinking the cardamom syrup AND licking the caramel out of the ramekin(THAT CARAMEL THOUGH! I can't imagine that anyone would have anything negative to say about this place after being bitch-slapped to heaven by their belgian street waffles. I don't have any other experience with BSW but whatever, these are perfect. Naiveté and pathos are the fiercest of fists and i'll fight for these crisp, caramelized concoctions any day. Especially when they are topped with poached pears. But get there early because Portlanders love brunch, and this place gets packed. read more

First and foremost: Let me say that the food here is absolutely fabulous, especially recently. Most presently, as in yesterday afternoon: A friend of mine recently moved back into town and we thought this would be a great place to take him as a welcome-back meal. Unfortunately, whoever was hosting couldn't be bothered to even be SEEN on the floor. Finally a waiter (maybe a busser) had to come by after we'd been ignored without even a "Somebody will be by in a second" for over five minutes to let us know that we'd have to wait for awhile. Suffice it to say, we ended up eating elsewhere. The kitchen staff and whoever writes the menu are amazing and talented, but the floor staff leaves very much to be desired. I would love to eat there more often, but something about being treated poorly from entrance to exit takes an edge off of their wonderful food. Still, I'd recommend that people go to Bread and Ink just because, despite the front of house, the back of house makes AMAZING food. After trying hard to find a place to go to breakfast in the area, there are so many!, my boyfriend and I finally decided on Bread and Ink after reading the menu at side, it was this or cup and saucer down the street. I had scrambled eggs, peppered bacon, hash browns, and a small baguette with an orange juice. My boyfriend had a cheese omelet with hash browns and whole wheat toast. I'm trying to stay away from orange juice, it's my new years resolution, but decided to treat myself since it was my birthday. I do believe it was home squeezed because I could taste a little of the white part of the orange, but there wasn't a speck of pulp, so it was amazing! Definitely enjoyed it. I was excited for roasted potatoes because I love Merriweather's in NW, they've got amazing potatoes! However, my boyfriend asked which was better and the waiter, cute old man, said hash browns. The hash browns were really good, but I do wish I would have tried the potatoes. Yesterday I had a lunch meeting that was planned for Harlow's which had a line out the door. We didn't have that kind of time so the next obvious choice was Bread & Ink having always had pleasant experiences here in the past. It has easily been ten years since I've eaten at Bread & Ink, but they did not disappoint. Since I had been in the mood for "healthy" food I chose the Citrus & Avocado salad and it was delicious! The service was excellent and the coffee was delicious, hot and plentiful. Went for brunch on a Sunday. The place was crowded, but we were seated right away. The coffee was decent, but nothing extraordinary. Our sausage and eggs came out first and again they were passable, but nothing special. The eggs were bland and the sausage was overspiced. Then our main dishes came out. Good food and service. We went for brunch, it was pretty typical for Portland. There was no wait at 1pm on a Saturday which is a hard find in Portland. The brunch cocktails were good. We had an apple mimosa and a lemon drop. Both were pretty good. It seemed like they had more staff on than they needed, but maybe they're usually busier on Saturdays. I was hesitant to try Bread and Ink after reading some dismal reviews here, but I am so glad I went with my gut and tried it today. We took my mother-in-law for brunch - the place was VERY busy, but in a good way (and to be expected on a rare Sunny Saturday in March). I had absolutely no problems with the staff. My wife has a tendency to ask questions about what she should get and our waitress was knowledgable and, well, downright pleasant. We were not rushed, nor abandoned. Our coffee was good and hot, my wife devoured her chicken and waffles, my mother-in-law enjoyed her "perfectly cooked" eggs over medium, and I had the yummy pepper bacon on a fresh-made baguette toast. GREAT salads. Good food. Expensive & Slow. * I wouldn't recommend going there for a quick bite on your lunch break unless you order just a salad. Although the cooks were fast, it was my server who was the problem. It took them 10 minutes to take my order and then when it was ready, another server finally had to bring it to me. The worst part is that you can see what's going on from your seat. I had a perfect view of my server making eye contact with me and then turning around to make small-talk with another coworker several times. I lived in Hawthorne for 8 yrs. and Bread and Ink was always a trusted standby for breakfast. The mushroom omelet with baguette (+homemade ketchup on the homefries) is possibly the best I've ever had. I've never had a bad breakfast there. Now...for the real kudos... The Waffle Window is to die for. Belgian waffles with pearl sugar and toppings you wouldn't believe. Try pumpkin pie waffles in season, or the huckleberry and whipped cream, or the bacon basil and brie. A perfect Sunday morn for some time was a run up Mt. Tabor on a cool morning, finished at the Waffle Window, with an apple pie waffle and cup of coffee al fresco. Steam rising from your clothes to match the steam off of the coffee as you sit on the sidewalk. Bruce, the owner, has accommodated the window patrons a bit more and has added limited indoor seating to perch at as well. BTW, the waffles are a bargain at $4.50 for most and coffee is a buck. My voting is strictly based on their Happy Hour. The average prices range from $4-7 for happy hour items and in all honesty, they were all incredibly bland. They lacked any sort of flavor, especially for the price I paid. The Gnoochi Verde tasted like dough, was dry, and needed some sort of either red or white sauce to accompany it, not just olive oil. The asparagus with Chevre tasted great, but $5 for four tiny little spears with a little butter seems like a ripoff. The cheesy homefries with grilled onions were potato wedges with melted cheese and raw red onion strings...something I could have easily made at home for under $4. I have yet to try them for dinner, but based on the happy hour experience, I won't be checking out their menu much further for a while. read more

I have been coming to Bread and Ink Cafe for over 30 years and the food and service have been consistently good. While I'm not a chicken and waffles guy, I have sampled it from a couple of friends' plates: it's really tasty! I usually get an egg dish, either an omelet or a scramble. These are always tasty, as are the large helping of roasted potatoes served with the egg dishes. There is no way you are going to walk away from here hungry! Another advantage of coming here is that you can frequently get seated without waiting: you can't say that about many of the better brunch spots in Portland, especially during the weekend. read more
