I've passed this bakery for so many years due to it being close by to my then Aveda location on West Broadway. It is nestled on a busy street that houses Joe and the Juice, two delicatessens and Chobani Cafe. Bur Vesuvio stands alone as an an old fashioned bakery that reminds me of the boulangeries in Paris. It offers artisanal breads, pastries and beverages. It has a rustic feel due to the brick wall that currently has a festive wreath adorned on it. The menu is limited to the usual cappuccino, lattes, there are assortments of breads and pastries. I stopped by to try their hot chocolate which is rich and decadent. It tasted like a heap of Belgian Chocolate melted into a cup. It was a mild winter day thus I ate my lunch and sipped the hot chocolate at their outside table. Stopped by for a post-gym snack on a rainy Winter afternoon. Charming outside and inside as old school bakeries use to be in NYC in the '70s and '80s as I remember them. Soppressata and mozzarella sandwich was unremarkable. Oatmeal raisin cookie too soft for my palate. Iced cortado tasted as it should, a nice balance of espresso and cold milk. A darling gentleman helped me with my purchase the other week, and he appears to be a one-man show. The space is quaint and the display case is vibrant, you will be dazzled by the goodies and can't decide what to buy but will make a hasty choice since there's a line building behind you! God, I wish that wasn't the case at every bakery I'm at... I got a baguette that served its purpose for a sandwich made at home. The croissants were subpar. And I was disappointed with the rainbow cookie, it had no telltale sign it was a rainbow cookie on appearance nor in flavor. Friendly and cute inside. Very New York, small, standing only with ledge inside, two small round tables with 2 chairs each outside. Best place to be on a Sunday morning or afternoon. Decent bakery - not much seating (just outside). There's some standing room to snack on your pastries but it'll probably only fit 4 people max. I got the chocolate croissant, rainbow cookies (they're just diff shades of green) and a latte. Latte was good. Quite standard tasting. Chocolate croissant they heated up. It's very buttery which makes it a bit dense and not too flakey. I could only eat 3/4 before I felt like it was far too oily feeling for me. My friend helped me finish the rest. They give a solid amount of chocolate but it wasn't melted and gooey. Rainbow cookies were a bit dry with not much between each layer. What a great little bakery/coffee shop. On a recent trip to NYC, I had the pleasure of having coffee here twice. The oat lattes were on point as I tried to keep it simple. There's was delicious and creamy. During a meeting break, we also got an assortment of bakery goods to get us through the afternoon. I don't remember everything we had, but the pignoli cookie stood out as being one of the best I've had. Coffee and cookies, how can you go wrong? I am writing this review inspired by the employees working the mornings of Thursday 1/4 & Friday 1/5. Both gentlemen were friendly, personable, classy, humorous. Really a wonderful start to the day. Vesuvio makes my coffee perfectly. I love the focaccia & vegan cookies. I would've 5 stars the bakery. I'm only withholding 1 star because I so wish Vesuvio would bring back the vegan sandwich. Vesuvio's is an authentic and charming real bakery that makes you feel warm and welcome as you enter, and delights the eye (as well as the palette) with tasty treats be at savory or sweet. I often stop in for their classic salami and cheese sandwich baked on delicious Italian bread but the other day I decided on their tomato and cheese (looks like an oversized empanada) but was like a pizza inside! What a wonderful surprise. To end they have traditional Italian rainbow cookies or pignoli ones. They have recently added pecan pie and cheesecake!! They have a pretty wide array of loaves (focaccia, sourdough, ciabatta, etc.) They also offer lunch items salad bar style. As for their pastries they have mini cookies by the pound, croissants, cheesecake, bombolinis, and the best chocolate chip cookies. I tried their sesame croissant and I enjoyed it quite a bit. Its dusted with sesame seeds on top with a very thin layer of butter filling in the middle. I cant really make out what it is but it almost reminds me of halva. Little do they know that mere steps away, they'll find the pastry perfection and perfectly-pulled espresso shots at Vesuvio. Omg! The best croissant!!! This is such a cute little bakery offering freshly baked breads, croissants, cookies, and donuts. Sandwiches and coffees also available. There are two small tables outside that seat two each. Most take items to go. I hear the bread is great, but they don't slice it. The sesame croissant was outstanding! Get it heated and my god so buttery soft with a hint of sesame paste inside. You can taste the light butter flavor. So so good! Since cookies just came out I couldn't resist getting one (just 0.98 cents). This was a chocolate layer with blue cake and blueberry jam layer. What am I tipping them for if I have to pay to add the vanilla syrup in myself, on top of paying for the vanilla syrup? I even asked the barista "I actually have to put it in myself?" And she said "yea" and as stated above I asked "what did I tip you for?" and she just walked away. So happy to see an iconic family business revived, not only at its original Soho sited but also expanded uptown. Although it's got bought out by a restauranteur, he has kept the core integrity, so all the authentic Italian pastries and bread stay the same. The best known of Veusvio's pastries are the bombolini, Italian takes on the donut, but don't sleep on the bread loaves and savory sandwiches. Forewarn - there is no actual sign in front of the bakery saying "Birdbath." I walked by this bakery twice! I even cursed at Google Map when it kept telling me "I'm here." This bakery is small; there isn't a lot of standing room. I ordered a chocolate chip cookie ($3.50) and a marshmallow ($2). The baker offered me a new marshmallow when she saw the ones in the jar were stuck together. The cookie was the bomb! Ka-boom! My taste buds were rejoicing when I bit into it. The outside was crunchy and the inside was a little chewy. There were just enough chocolate chips. I'll definitely make more stops here. read more
