This bakery has some great items, but the customer service is dismal! I live in the building so I would love to frequent more often, BUT unfortunately you have to carve out 20 minutes of your day to wait on line. There are like 8 people behind the counter, a line out the door and only one or two people ringing up customers. They could EASILY fit another register. The only of its kind that stays open till late (11pm) on the weekend near Lincoln Center, Breads Bakery satisfies the late night sweet craving of theater goers post performances. I kinda expected mediocre quality, but I was pleasantly surprised. The creme brulee croissant is rather a misnomer. I thought it is better called creme custard croissant since there was no burnt cream (caramelized sugar) on top of mine. It wasn't to sweet, and tasted fresh even at 11pm. The almond croissant was a little sad looking, being squashed down to the pancake level. I thought it could use a little more fragipagne filling and a little less sugar. Small place with some outdoor seating. Went with a friend after taking a walk in the park. We both got sandwiches, which were good, but not much there for the price. I think it's do to the quality of the bread, but in that case I would just buy a croissant next time. I think they are more likely known for their desserts. Spectacular as usual!! When I found that Breads was coming to UWS there were tears in my eyes. It's probably my favorite bakery in NY. So much good stuff that you have to be very precise on what you want that day or just eat everything and die of happiness. Anyway, finally I went yesterday to this location that is a little bit smaller than the original in Union Square so it has less things although it has a couple of pastries the original doesn't have like the Concord Cake which is delicious!! I wanted chocolate and this cake is chocolate madness: chocolate mouse with chocolate cookie with chocolate merengues with chocolate ganache with more chocolate. Amazing stuff! A little bit overpriced for my wallet: almost $12 for a small cake for two. It is worth ordering it but I guess not an every-time-selection. Obviously they have the babkas which run out pretty quickly especially the chocolate Nutella. It was 4 pm on a Sunday and they were already gone! Babka, mmmm, it just mouth watering. The best in the world. It's one of those things that doesn't have any comparison with the rest of its similar copies, like the cookie from Levain Bakery. It's THAT GOOD! I think some they opened recently they have things to try on the counter. Samples of their stuff. When I went they had the poppy seed roll which are excellent. Similar to a babka but without the chocolate and Nutella bomb. Also the cheesecake was there to try. A blueberry cheesecake of the month which is not for my palate but it was light and flavorful. We ordered a Jerusalem baguette, a cheese straw and an olive bread stick to go for the dinner we had later. Anything and absolutely everything coming out of that oven is heaven in the form of food. Two words-matzah quiche! This may be the most delicious Passover-friendly thing you can pick up in the area! The combo of sunchokes and gouda (?) was stellar, and I've been eating on it for a couple days and not bored of it yet! The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars was the service. The person working the counter didn't know what kind of quiche it was, and then pulled up an ingredient list (salt, pepper level of detail) to read me... and acted as though it was an inconvenience to do so. Just telling me sunchoke and cheese would have been fine, I didn't ask for the details or indicate any sort of food allergy, but more importantly, I didn't need to feel like I was putting him out for asking. Yesterday I made a $88 purchase at Breads near Lincoln Center. Among my various items to go was a scrambled eggs sandwich. Leaving the bakery I took 2 bites to find the first ever bad item at Breads. It was flavorless and the bun simply seen better days. I came back asking to void that sole item off my purchase and was denied by who seemed to be a manager. The manager supported the bakery's policy not to return money. 2 things: I hope that that manager has other talents as she should not be working in this industry. A business that doesn't void a bad piece is not worthy to serve customers. It is up to me and up to me only if I choose to switch or am fine with credit but once the business has faulted I should be allowed to have an item taken off my bill and money returned to me. This is bad business that is simply unfit to call upon customers. Period! read more

The chocolate babka is ridiculous. It is so tempting to get the 2 for 20 deal... But one is PLENTY of food. I was, however, disappointed by the coffee. I can't really fault them for coffee, but I feel like it was a significant downfall. One of few places open near Central Park, thus, we had limited options. After walking in, were not greeted, merely stared at. My wife and I ordered two pastries, one tea and a mocha. The cashier repeated my mocha twice, as I emphasized non-fat milk. We sat and one by one our items showed minus the mocha. My wife went to ask for it and instantly, the three gossiping workers stated that no one ordered a mocha. We were not given a receipt, but $22 plus our tip said otherwise. In short, were we given funny stares as if we were trying to pull as fast one for a free cup of joe. Mind you, the employees stared and mumbled at us as we consumed our food. It is a shame that people treat others as such. If we could, we would give them 0 stars. read more

I got the cinnamon raisin walnut loaf and it's not the same as the one near union square. I have to trek all the way down there to get the real deal. The one here is dry and not packed with currants and walnuts like the location by Union square. It's a good thing I tried the downtown location first to understand why everyone is raving about their babka or else I wouldn't be coming back for more. So if you're craving for something sweet for dessert it's ok but nothing to rave about at this location. Usually I really like this place. Their bread is really good. I was in there 20 minutes before 9 tonight. They close at 9. I bought a loaf of bread but they couldn't slice it because they had already cleaned the machine. (Yet they had a ton of bread left) The girl who was the manager really wanted everyone out of the shop because she wanted to close 20 minutes early. I wish they could put a sign on their door that they were closing early instead of being rude and unhelpful. They were open but I felt very unwelcome. I wanted to have a quick coffee and pastry but changed my mind and went to Starbucks instead. Usually everyone is so nice in here but after tonight I will not rush back. I go to this place a lot. I think the manager this evening could care less about all her customers. I usually buy a lot in here but tonight was just really bad service. read more

Love, love, love the brioche here. The coffee is also great. The french bread is very similar to the Parisian kind, crunchy outside, pointed ends. It's kind of like sourdough & is thin. The olive sticks by the door are good but not as good as the cheese sticks. The cheese breads/sticks are gooey inside and soft they are good for breakfast and snack. There is not much seating inside but the place provides seating outside. It is very busy but the line goes fast. read more
