Hadn't been here in a while as there are plenty of great coffee places in the area. And not sure I'd go back again. 5 people behind the coffee bar, it wasn't a rush hour, unclean tables. To top it off ordered an iced latte to go and they didn't have straws and there was no way to drink without spilling while walking - it would have been great if they had informed me while I was ordering or even put it in a cup in which they serve hot coffee that has a spout. But when I asked for a straw one of the girls said 'oh sorry we are out' and rolled her eyes and said it's 'mildly inconvenient.' Not for a six dollar coffee. When you are in as crowded a market as a cafe the least you can do is be pleasant ... and take care of customers. And to top it off, the coffee was so milky had to throw it out. read more

This place is absolutely wonderful. Everyone treats you with such a friendly attitude, and try to help you with recommendations which feels really authentic for San Francisco. The coffee from here was pretty strong which helped me keep awake throughout the entire day. A nice coffee from here and a croissant From next door is all you need for your mornings. They also over filled my coffee and we had a totally funny moment with the baristas. They do have a small amount of pastries but even they even recommend going next door. Breck's is incredibly lovely with folks who are happy to help you quench your thirst with whatever they've got. Not sure what to get? They'll help. Need a snack? They've got them. Need to tinkle? They have a lovely bathroom. Need to think about something besides what you've got going on in your life? There are a plethora of stories just waiting to be heard from the folks either standing or sitting outside. I've been unexpectedly privy to office gossip, a roommate romance gone wrong, mediocre first date, actual work interview, and new friend meeting partner's friends. I'm not sure if my own convos here have been that interesting to anyone else but, alas. Great place for convos. And the people-watching is fantastic. Honestly, I think the fact that I haven't been inside a bar in ages is showing but whatever. I love it here. The people are great, the drinks are great, and there are seriously great croissants and people who love croissants like right next door. Breck's is a small, but quaint neighborhood spot. It took over what used to be a bodega, and got a huge face lift . I got the chance to drop by soft opening weekend - Verve coffee for the win!! The owner was friendly and quickly greeted us. We (my roomie and I) walked in with the intention of grabbing our coffee for takeaway since we wanted to shop on Clement, but upon entering Breck's we quickly changed our minds. We wanted to soak in the morning (and the sun, since it is brightly and cheery inside) and enjoy the space. Breck's has a few outdoor seats (take advantage of it if you can!!) and 3 small marble tables inside. The space itself is clean, brightly lit, and with big windows. The three tables inside are marble countertop - looooove it. We sat and enjoyed our coffees and my roomie did some work on his iPad. I noticed another review complaining about the noise - not quite sure I understand that since Breck's is located on the tail end of the Clement/Arguello corridor away from all the restaurants and bars. It can be a bit noisier than usual on Sundays when the Clement Farmers Market is going on (which happened to be the day I checked out Breck's) but it is not a loud intersection by any means. It is the inner Richmond for crying out loud! This isn't the Mission, Union Square, or SoMa! And the very same review claims the owner is racist?? Something about being not assholes only to non-white people?? Last time I checked I was pretty sure I was Asian and the owner was SO NICE. How on Earth!??! I don't take these sort of allegations against small business owners very lightly, so I don't really understand why Yelp refuses to remove that review. So anyway... upon my second visit, the owner was not there but I think the manager? and they had new staff. The barista was awesome! I just did a quick pop in to grab coffee to go. She and I had a little exchange about the food industry. They were insistent on giving me a sleeve for my coffee cup, but I worked in the food hospitality for so long that I practically don't have fingerprints anymore. I joked about it and she understood. However, I truly appreciated the fact that they were looking out for me though - a very tender touch. I am also secretly soooo happy that Breck's is right next door to Arsicault. I love Arsicault, but their coffee is trash (and they only have drip). Breck's to the rescue!!! Definitely coming back for wine. A wonderful new addition to the neighborhood, especially with the location next to Arsicault - to pair with their pastries. Which is exactly what I did: I went to Arsicault and got an almond pastry but wanted coffee, but the coffee at Arsicault is drip, so I walked over to Breck's and ordered an oat milk latte. Perfection. The restaurant looks like a wine bar, and it is adorable. Very small. Maybe 3-4 tables inside on the right and a handful of tables outside, with a wine area and a coffee machine. I'm not sure about snacks or food, but I would definitely come back for a date night or fun evening with friends. read more

The staff at Breck's is very unwelcoming and unknowledgeable. I was turned down last time I went for a glass a wine because they said there was no more room, when just 5 minutes before they added another table for a group of girls that were in front of me in line..? Is pretty girl treatment a thing? Do yourself a favor and just head to Blue Danube instead. I've been living in this neighborhood for awhile and watched this shop go from a small liquor store to the coffee shop it is today. While it's definitely an upgrade and looks cute, what bothers me about this establishment is the owner. I've never felt welcomed by him. Ive seen him outside sometimes, say good morning, and he just stares blankly at me and then scurries away. Well one day, I go inside to get some coffee (during their soft opening so menu was limited and also experimenting). When I walk up to the counter, no "hi what can I get for you?" - just another blank stare until I say something. It already felt like something was off, or as if he didn't want me there. I ask for a cold brew, he says ok. Then I ask if he happens to have condensed milk and he says "no..is that for a drink?" And I say yea, it's kind of like a Vietnamese iced coffee and he scoffs and says "Why would I have that here when you can get that anywhere on clement st?" I honestly didn't know what to say after that. And I think he tried to save himself by sarcastically saying "I'll take that into consideration for future items" When he finished pouring my cold brew, he put it on the counter and didn't say anything else. Maybe it was rude of me to ask for another form of milk but I thought it was also rude to say that back to me and provide that kind of service (or lack of service) to your customers. Been living in this neighborhood for over a year now. Watched Breck's evolve from a little convenience store to the quaint little spot it is now. The coffee isn't bad, at all, they have great local rotating beers on tap. Prices are fair, and if you're looking for a glass of wine and a chill location to chat or do a little work, Breck's is great! The outdoor seating is cozy and also next to a fantastic bakery. One of the biggest downsides of this place is the owner. I was browsing reviews and wasn't surprised to see a mention of racism. I wouldn't point directly at racism but I have to admit there is something strange about how the owner interacts with people. My partner is white and when she goes into get coffee she's always greeted, and I've specifically asked her whether the owner talks to her, and she says he does. Bare in mind I am a please & thank you kind of guy, and always tip for coffee and my beer. One time we even went into Breck's for coffee and he greeted her but didn't even look at me. She noticed it too. Another time I went in for coffee and he didn't bother to lift his head up to speak to me, then sheepishly put my beverage on the counter and slid away. I see this guy on the street at least 4 times a week and he ALWAYS avoids eye contact, turns around, shuffles in a new direction. It's just gotten to the point my partner and I both think there's something weird going on. As a former cocktail lounge and coffee shop GM (in SF), I'm a little irked to see an entrepreneur withholding from an opportunity to create loyal clientele. Either way the owner only seems to be hospitable to certain clientele. Is it racism? I'm not going to say that, I just notice he's particularly warm to my white friends, but I'm never worthy of eye contact or a conversation. I wouldn't dissuade anyone from visiting Breck's but if you're brown it might be a different experience from other reviews you're reading. read more

I really want to support my local stores. I have tried this place few times but my most recent stop was quite disappointing experience. First of all, these staffs they hired look young and lots of energy? But they don't seem to be friendly or warm but sassy and lazy? The owner needs to train these people again since the store floor and counter tops are so dirty and dusty. Their outdoor table area has bunch of cigarettes and trash flying all over between the tables and I noticed nobody wipes out any tables. I have so many other options in the city to shop my wine and coffee. Stopped by for coffee. It was okay. Service was quick though we ordered potentially the simplest things ever. Coffee flavor was medium despite that they use my favorite beans from verve. Latte was just OK cookie was just OK service was just OK I had a gift certificate it wouldn't work in the machine and the girl just said sorry it doesn't work and made me pay no customer service at all I couldn't look up my gift card to see what was wrong or anything don't give them out if you can't help people when they don't work. Great new spot for a nice glass of wine. Love the setting, the outdoor tables feel like a Parisian cafe. The selection of wines and beers on tap make for a perfect start to a nice evening on Clement, my favorite SF street. In recent years Clement street has become such a foodie street. Breck's adds to the fun ambiance. I also like the affordability of this great neighborhood spot. Our cheese course was a perfect accompaniment to our wines. This place is incredible!! Went last night with the lady friend and safe to say we'll definitely be back. We started off with some Red on tap, think it was a Cuvve Le Bec? Great price at 9 a glass! Then the owner gave us a couple Sav Blancs to try! Talk about a chill guy. He even sat down with us past the closing time to hang and talked about the history of the place. He's a New Yorker so I can see where Nadia got offended but he was the nicest guy and I'm actually Persian so don't get the whole non-white thing? Gets a bit crowded in the afternoon but good seating space where you can either finish last few pages of that book or enjoy a wine glass with friends. I used to pass by Breck's everyday when I was addicted to Arsicault croissants, but it was much more convenient to get coffee at the same place, so I never went in. A heavyset gentleman with glasses and the same polo shirt would always be at the counter or near the door, visually patrolling the neighbors walking by. I don't know if he was attempting to attract customers, or keep them out. I only mention this because although the space looked interesting inside, I never got an inviting feeling with Will's physical presence/vibe. Unfortunately, one day, I arrived at my beloved Arsicault a bit too late, and they had sold out and closed early. As I slumped back to my car, my desire for caffeine made me go into Breck's for coffee. They used Verve brand after all and how badly can you eff up coffee? Boy was I about to find out! Upon entering, I was still bummed that I wasn't going to get my croissant fix, that I didn't notice Will's usual demeanor. I ordered a cappuccino and attempted to make some small talk by mentioning how bummed I was that Arsicault was closed. Will gave no response while charging my card and when I looked up to take back my card, he had the same stern blank stare coming from behind his glasses. "Okay..." forgot where I was... As he was making my coffee, I wandered around looking at the different types of beans they had on display. I could feel Will's eyes following my every move. Not one to shirk away from "confrontation," I turned around and watched my coffee being made. Will never broke eye contact and I guess I lost our impromptu staring contest when I looked down at what he made me. My cappuccino had a splattered white blob in the middle and everything dripped out of the mug. I raised my eyebrow and looked up at Will, communicating to him that I thought this was a joke. That's when I noticed he never looked away. Impressive. "I ordered this to go." His blank expression finally broke when he gave me an annoyed look, grabbed the mug and poured the contents roughly into a to go cup. Every fiber of my being screamed for me to just leave the cup there and walk out. But gosh diddly darn it, I paid $5 for that! By the time I walked out and looked back in, Will was already chatting up some Laurel Village/Lake Street lady in leggings and pony tail at their wine display. "Did that just happen?" I wondered. One look down at my cappuccino affirmed it. The first and only taste reaffirmed it. Blech. Luke warm and tasteless at best. What a waste of good beans. When I got home, I wanted to post about my bizarre experience and then I started to read the rest of the reviews. If you'll notice, most bad reviews of Will's bad attitude we're posted by people of color. Will will respond to bad reviews when the poster is white, inviting them back in and even going so far as to apologize. But he all but ignores the other negative reviews. So, dare I use the term racism? But I'm old school. If it barks like a dog and walks like a dog, what am I supposed to call it? A non cat? If nothing else Will. You made me look at the man in the mirror that day. I guess I could pass as non white. read more

I love what the owner has done with the place and I've had only good experiences. When they received a small stock of midwinter night's dram, the owner let me know since I had asked awhile ago if they would be carrying it. It is delicious!! The owner was sweet to remember! I also love their selection of wine and cute ambiance. They also make yummy breakfast paninis. Other reviews have made comments of racism but I've never felt uncomfortable or unwelcome (I'm Asian).
