I went in with my child to possibly grab a quick snack for him after he got his haircut nearby. When I came in the girl said, "we aren't open, we are closed". The door was not locked and people were eating outside so I was a bit taken aback. Now granted, I understand if you're closing and can't fulfill an order. The issue is the tone and how she rolled her eyes at me. I had no idea they closed at 2pm as I'd never been to this establishment, ever. Also, it was 1:52. Had I asked for a whole meal, I totally understand letting me know that it wasn't doable. The thing is, all I did was walk in. Had I just wanted to quickly get a water or drink to go, or something of that sorts, I believe that would've easily been doable. But because I was treated like an annoyance for simply stepping inside the establishment, I didn't even get to ask about anything. Driving through town stopped to have lunch. Thoroughly enjoyed my Reuben sandwich. Nice cuts of pastrami right amount of sauerkraut and cheese and the Ryebread was perfectly grilled. This is a busy place. We arrived and were told the wait would be 25 minutes and we were seated in 18 minutes. The servers were friendly and knowledgeable. I'm an Eggs Benedict fan and these did not disappoint. The muffin was toasted, and there was a good portion of actual ham topped with perfectly poached eggs and a light and bright hollandaise sauce. Wonderful flavor and perfectly cooked and assembled. The shredded potatoes were topped with tasty country gravy that had a nice sage essence, crispy bacon and cheese. Decadent and filling. The power bowl was for her and while I wasn't impressed, she was quite pleased. The sausages were delicious and the veg was fresh and cooked just enough. She had no complaints at all. This was our first and only visit. We arrived for breakfast and were surprised to see not only a long line stretched out along other businesses but to find out how chaotic and unorganized it was. For anyone with a wheelchair or walker it may be difficult to get through the crowded entry which seems to be a safety hazard for all. Brick + Mortar is soo gooooddd. If I could, I would drive from Portland to Albany every weekend just to have brunch here. Everything sounded delicious on their menu but I decided on the Fried Chicken Egg Benedict with shredded potatoes served mortar style and it was delicious! Please do yourself a favor and order your side mortar style. It's hearty but there's so much flavor and it's just worth the extra $5 and calories. My boyfriend had their French Toast, which was their special was of the day and that was great too. I also had their Lavendar + Honey Latte and their mug was huge. Safe to say this place does not skimp out on their portions. Plenty of seating downstairs and upstairs but it gets really busy here on the weekend. Luckily, some of our party arrived earlier to put our our name down - I'd say the wait was around 30-40 minutes (for a party of 7 on a Saturday morning). This is one of our go to places, however, the wait can really suck when they are busy. This is a popular restaurant where you may want to arrive ahead of time so you are not starving by the time you are seated. I recommend at least half an hour. The food is awesome comfort food! My sister lives around this area and wanted a good breakfast for her birthday so we came here. It's a cute place, but is very loud. Everything about the service here is very slow. Staff are nice enough, but everything moves at a snails pace here (and I'd heard that before). The menu looked great, but the food itself was only okay. Everything seemed really bland to me, like not even salt and pepper were used bland. Even my vanilla latte tasted really more like plain coffee. We ordered the lemon curd pancake and it was just meh. Not a lot of flavor, which is probably why they give you syrup (I've seen similar dishes elsewhere but never with syrup). It wasn't awful, and it looks good, but is just pretty flavorless. This is by far the best breakfast place in the area. All the breakfast dishes I've had are good. Their food isn't overly greasy or oily like I've found other breakfast diners and cafes to be. The quality of ingredients is noticeably higher and the flavors are just cleaner and more elevated than your typical breakfast place. When I was young, Albany was not known for its cute restaurants. It was known for the very bad smelling air. So when I ended up in Albany with friends for brunch, I was skeptical. I was thinking we were probably heading for a truckstop. But I was pleasantly surprised. Downtown Albany is much more fun than I thought. There were several options, and we decided on Brick & Mortar. It was Sunday, around noon, so we expected at least a 30 minute wait, but we were seated in 10. The menu was fairly extensive and everything looked good. While perusing the menu, we got really good lattes, the kind that used to exist before Starbucks. I opted for carnitas eggs benedict, while the others ordered huevos rancheros. Portions were huge and delicious. I recommend this place, and I also think I will go back to Albany and try some of the other interesting restaurants. Everything is homemade - We had loaded potato soup and some fruit - along with a Denver omelette and Mortar hash browns. All so yummy, hot and great portions. We went to the brick and mortar for a brunch yesterday. The decor was nice and we went because of the rave reviews. The staff was very friendly and we got seated right away. It took a while to get our food approx 50 mins but the food was definitely worth the wait. I had the Huevos Rancheros, my daughter had the smoked salmon hash and my son in law had the chicken fried steak. It was all very good as we tasted from each other.
