A dear friend treated me to a delicious meal at Bricklane Curry House in Jersey City for my birthday. Finding street parking on a Saturday night was somewhat of a challenge, but we persisted and found a spot within a comfortable walk from the restaurant. We had a reservation and were immediately seated several table from the entrance. We were impressed by the lovely, dimly lit, elegant interior decor. Fresh Azaleas (my favorites) served as centerpieces on the tables. We were given our "real" menus, a lovely touch in this day of age, and were served complimentary papad and the tastiest tomato soup in Demitasse cups. I ordered the Malai Kofta. My friend order a chicken dish who's name I did not catch (I'm a vegetarian), but which she claimed was delicious. We shared Naan and Vegetable samosas as we leisurely caught up on each other's lives and plans for the future. We never felt rushed. When the time came to end our meal, the friendly server brought us containers for our leftover, a round tray with a colorful variety of spices and treats and the bill. Had a bit of a mixed experience at Brick Lane on a not too busy Friday evening. Decided to come here on a whim after discovering the Thai place we wanted to try temporarily closed. We arrived into a dimly lit dining room near the entrance. We were kindly greeted to some papad and apparently a Gymkhana tomato soup. Didn't realize it was a thing, but appreciate the gesture. We started with some cocktails. For some reason, it took almost 15 minutes to arrive, which was a bit odd I ordered a tequila based drink called "lost in goa" (I think that is right?) which actually was pretty good. The fiancée ordered a gin based cocktail which I forgot the name of. Whoops. From there, I think the drinks were the highlight of the night. We wanted to split two different items. Our first choice was the Nigiri Curry with vegetables. I decided that maybe a paneer-based dish would complement it. Therefore, I opted for the paneer tikka. From there, We then decided to get the Amritsari Kulcha. Just like the drinks, both took quite some time to arrive. I would've imagined the paneer tikka to arrive quicker because it was on skewers (as confirmed by our waitress). However, when we got the paneer tikka, it was actually served to us sizzler style. So our waitress was wrong. Also, the paneer tikka had extra veggies which I didn't expect or want. I first noticed eggplant which was just way too hard to eat. There were also peppers, cauliflower, zucchini, etc.... the disappointing part was the paneer because I don't think it was fully marinated. The issue to me is that the pieces were just way too large. I think smaller cubes would've helped. On the contrary, the Nilgiri Curry was was a smaller quantity. Something more reasonable for two people. My only disappointment with this is that it didn't really arrive hot. It was warm, which really isn't acceptable That's the least I could expect from any establishment, but especially an Indian restaurant. Because of the paneer tikka, we really couldn't finish most of the curry (and none of the rice) while at the restaurant. When we did reheat it a few days later, you could get the aromatic flavors a bit more. Just wish it was there at the onset. The kulcha truthfully was pretty good. It also held up pretty well even as leftovers, especially since we had a lot of it remaining. I could've given this a 4 star review, but felt that the food not being very hot when arriving + the waitress not really knowing how the paneer tikka is served proved to be a disappointment. First time ever giving a two star review First time in my life waiting almost TWO WHOLE HOURS for food. GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ‼‼‼ I almost never complain (I leave good honest reviews all the time) but omg... this place almost ruined our valentine's/anniversary. Food was good but it was not worth 2 hours of waiting good. TIMELINE: Our reservation was at 7:30, we got there 7:45 and didn't get seated until 8:00. That's fine. However, they put us in a corner right by the door (freezing cold every time someone walks in) and left us by ourselves for 30 minutes. No one came to check in on us, we didn't even get water cups for our water. After finally ordering at 8:30, we proceed to spend the next HOUR waiting--neither of our 2 appetizers came, our drinks didn't come, and no one came to check in on us. One hour came and went. It's 10PM and our curry finally arrives. At that point, we're so hungry we just devour it. We save space for our appetizers (which hasn't come yet), guess what--they never put our order in! (See Server Section) We sit around, twiddling our thumbs. 10:30PM. Nothing. 11:00PM. Alright, let's just get our checks and leave. MANAGEMENT 0/5 The restaurant was fully booked since it was valentine's day and they couldn't even take walk-in's. It's totally understandable that a business is busy and unable to accommodate stuff like that but it is also up to management to properly staff their restaurant to anticipate large crowds ESPECIALLY when reservations were made ahead of time. They should have a good understanding of how many guests will be dining that night and take the proper steps to fully staff their restaurant. SERVER 3/5 This is not on the servers, I understand they were busy and it's hard for them to check up all the time. They were apologetic and gave us a dessert of gulab jamun (which was way too sweet). HOWEVER, the waitress took down my order by memory and I was skeptical to this since there were quite a few things but my boyfriend assured me that this was the way they did it in India. Guess what? Ended up forgetting to write down one of my dishes--another dish never even came. And the kicker, we had to FLAG people down by poking our heads out of our little crawl space ANY TIME we needed service, it felt barbaric. I understand the servers are probably overwhelmed but there's a lot that can be improved on all around the table. This was really not good. FOOD 4/5 It was good food, I will give that to them. We ordered a variety of dishes including some paneer masala, saag paneer, chicken korma, among others. I've been here a couple of times before and thought it was okay. I was disappointed by my most recent visit. We were looking for somewhere to eat at 9 on a Monday evening and stopped by here as they are open until 2 everyday. There were a couple of other tables eating but it was pretty quiet overall. Bricklane is conveniently located near to the Grove St PATH. The space is nicely decorated and the servers are pleasant and as mentioned they are open late. We were given a complimentary demi- tasse cup of tomato soup and poppadoms with chutney which was a nice touch. We ordered the Chicken Shish Kebab, Lamb Biriani and a Garlic Naan. Chicken Shish Kebab was more like kofta and came hidden beneath a pile of chopped cabbage. The portion was small and the seasoning was unevenly distributed so one bite was bland and the other was fiery hot. Biriani had the same uneven distribution of spice and was again on the small side portion wise. Presentation was lacking, there were none of the usual nuts etc on top and a whole hard boiled egg complete with grey ring around the yolk was buried in the middle of the rice. The lamb was tender but there was not much of it. Naan Bread was on the smaller side and was thin and crispy rather than being pillowy, soft and fluffy. We were given a complimentary dessert of Carrot Halva. The extras were a nice but unnecessary touch (there was also a bowl of 'curry sauce' that tasted like Tilka Masala or Bitter Chicken sauce given to us with the mains) I would rather have had more generous portions and better presentation. I'd say that the spice level was higher than in other local Indian restaurants. I don't have a problem that but it's definitely more of a UK rather than USA spice level so that's something to look out for. With one beer, tax and tip we paid a little under $100 for a quick curry for two. I think it's very overpriced for what it is and won't revisit. I'm reply to the business owners comments I wish to say that I realize that i can pay close to $100 for dinner in JC but we had one beer, one bread, and two entrees that were small. My family and I attended their Mother's Day brunch, which sadly was a bit of a letdown. Food in the trays were empty most of the time, we had to ask for certain items to be refilled, and instead of the plates being cleared so we could replenish them, they just stacked up on our table until we asked for them to be cleared as well. We have been coming/ordering from Brick Lane for a while because it's consistently delicious. They recently added a brunch buffet from 12-4 on weekends and omg. The menu changes every week--today the theme was Guri Padwa. At least half the buffet options are vegetarian. There is self-serve masala chai, and ample salad ingredients. I've been coming here many times since arriving in Jersey City in 2016. This last time there was the best yet. I came with my mom and step dad for my mom's birthday as she is a vegetarian who loves Indian food. She got the Chana Masala and Manchurian soup, my step dad the Biryani and Manchurian soup, and I got an order of the London Samosas (which I always love) and the chicken jalfrezi. Everything was delicious. My mom said that her meal was her favorite that she's ever had. Also, what set it apart was how kind the waitress was. She went out of her way to explain the dishes, how to eat them, and what went into them. 5+++ stars for her kindness and attentiveness. BrickLane's food is delicious and the service is great, but I think the little things matter. Integrity is extremely important, especially in a small community. I visited Bricklane late one night (October 19th, 2025) and enjoyed a meal. Even though there was a drunken regular patron there that kept interrupting my meal, I found it endearing that they allowed him to stay and feel at home. After the mishandling of property I left behind, I wish I would've given less grace and insisted that I be left alone. I asked for my phone to be charged and gave them my charger. It was distinct and recognizable. I left there accidentally. When I called back to ask if it was there, they were kind and said they'd hold it for me. I came back quite a while later to retrieve it. I immediately described it to the waitress who approached me. She got the manager. The manager INSISTED that I had incorrect information and that the charger belonged to the business. But WHY would someone come and identify their item after being told it was there if it wasn't? It's strange for a person to come and describe a lost item to the TEE off the street before seeing it if it doesn't belong to them. I acknowledge I should've gotten it sooner and I wish I would have so that I could avoid the experience of someone blatantly lie to my face while holding on to my property. I was eager to go to Happy Hour there this week for the first time, but I'll pass on that. The principles of honesty were violated in ways that make living in 2025 even harder. I hope that the manager reconsiders policies around lost items and finds better ways to handle things rather than lying. read more

We got the the following items: Lamb bhuna came with rice - the lamb was tender, sauce was spicy and the portion was pretty big. We got lahsuni chicken (garlic chicken) , which was very tomatey and very little garlic. We also ordered haryali chicken tikka. This dish was not even well salted, let alone any other seasoning. It also had a bitter burnt taste. Bhuna chicken was okay but nothing special. The two items we liked were garlic naan and goat cheese vada. The cocktails were also extremely disappointing because they were very expensive and didn't have much alcohol in them. It felt like we are drinking a very sweet juice or dessert. We have been visiting Bricklane for many years, I think since they opened here and have always liked them for their food quality, ambience and service - but they have upped their game are now EVEN MORE AWESOME. The reason is their weekend brunch buffet - unlimited portions of yummy food that will leave you wishing you had more space in your tummy. The Crown Jewels are their chat counter, worked by Tanashvi who creates gol gappe with the patience and skill of an artist. So yummy. Her colleague Sindhu also provided exceptional service - offering freshly prepared chicken tikka for our friends (we are vegetarian so can't comment on it) and freshly made garlic naan and roti (breads). Both of them swiftly cleared our plates keeping the esthetic beauty of our table and the restaurants pretty ambience just perfect. In terms of value for money, just their chat counter and dessert choices are enough to more than recover value for the buffet price which is quite reasonable for the spread at $26.
