Jack is a stand up guy. Full catback exhaust friendly. Before I handed him my keys, I told him I have a catback exhaust and he told me not to worry about it. Check my other smog shop review. I got turned away for it Not even 5mins of him looking at my car, he told me I had a CEL code stored on the cars computer even though it didn't trigger any lights on my dash, it was the notorious P0420 code for catalytic converter. He cleared it and told me to come back after a few days of driving, but honestly I took my car straight to Speed Element to fix my exhaust leak. This has been my go to smog place starting 8+ years back. The pricing here has always been very competitive with other places, and the wait time is usually very short. The machine is nicely installed underground so it works great on lowered vehicles. 2020-01-04: This is a STAR certified station. I've been here twice and it seems the rate for a 1995 sedan is about $45. The tester is very polite and approachable. The entire test takes about 10 to 15 minutes. There's barely any wait in the morning on weekends. Edit on 2021-02: the rate for a 1997 van is $50. read more

I had to come here three times in 2015 to get my car smogged. The first couple of times my car would not pass. I was never charged. The guy who works or owns this place is really friendly and was extremely helpful. The third time, it finally passed! This is now my go to smog place. I brought in my little brother's car for a smog check. I heard about Brightside Smog from a friend and decided to give them a shot. Tony was friendly and didn't have me waiting too long. He was knowledgeable and easy to talk to, which made the process a whole lot faster. The weather was hot but Tony was kind enough to offer me a beverage. I don't know if he does that normally, but it was a nice gesture. On a side note, I highly encourage the ladies who dreaddd doing stuff like this for their car to come here. Came here around noon yesterday to get a smog check on my car. Spoke with a guy and he told me to pull right up and he could do it now, I was glad to see how quickly he was about it, but sadly that's where it all fell through. I pulled my car up and the technician (Jack?) started asking a bunch of questions about my car. I told him it was 100% stock, and the only difference was that I had my hood replaced after a car accident He then started looking under hood and questioning everything else. When he asked if I had the original hood I told him it was replaced after the car accident, and he then told me he couldn't help me because he didn't have the information of the car under the hood. I asked him if there was a way for me to get the information for him, he said no. He handed me back my paperwork and said "I can't help you." I don't understand how I have had this hood since 2008, and have been smogging my car every other year since then and no one else has ever told me this. I took the car down the street, and was in and out in 20 minutes. I don't know why he refused to help, but I'm upset that he had to. read more

I took my BMW for smog to Jack at Brightside Smog. My car failed smog as check engine light was ON. Only negative I have for Jack is that he should have told me upfront that my car will fail smog, as its a known fact that cars that have check engine light will fail. Jack provided me with failure code, asked me to get car fixed and return for re-test. I got my car fixed. I made several trips to Jack as I want to get the smog done asap due to expired registration. I had no idea that after getting car fixed, you have to drive it on a highway for good 100-200miles for computer to clear out. Jack was very patient. After 3-4 attempts, my car computer cleared up, and my car smog passed successfully. Thank you Jack for your patience and support!!! read more

I was searching on yelp to find a close by smog station to get my car tested, and I stumbled upon Brightside Smog. So I decided to bring it in since it is close to my house. I got there and the technician was testing another car, I asked him how long it'll take and he said about 10-15 minutes. So I waited in the waiting room, which was very clean and it had A.C! When he was done with the other car, he asked me for my car keys and paperwork. It took him about 10 minutes to finish testing my car. Not only was the technician fast, but the place is reasonably priced. For both the test and the certification, it cost only $35! I was charged $45 for my mother's 1995 Toyota Corolla which was decent (they were running a $29.99 "special" and then there were extra costs tacked on) but the fact that some people here got a smog check for $35 makes me feel a bit ripped off. This is the place for smog checks. The owner/operator is a nice honest guy and his prices are the best in town. Since it's a drive-up one man shop sometimes there's a wait, but so worth it. He charged $45 for our 84 truck and $35 for my 04 Volvo. That's a bargain compared to 7th street that charged $65 for a botched smog for the truck where our mechanic said the tech must have been puffing on the fumes, and wanted $45 for the Volvo. read more

Back in August I found a solid 98' CRV Civic with 90k miles on it to use as my daily. All it needed was an oil change and smog and I was set to go. My family been really big on cars for as long as I could remember and they've been coming here for years for smog so I figured why not give this place a shot? And I'm extremely happy that I did! It's a set $40 for smog and if you don't pass you're more than welcome to have another go at it for free. The timing was off said the guy doing the smog the first time, but after doing a basic tune up at home and getting the O.K. by my friend Max P. (owner of Illegal Garage in SJ) I drove on by to have my baby get checked again and BAM - I passed! The Vietnamese family who runs this shop are extremely welcoming and friendly. I had arrived within the hour of them closing without notice on a Monday and the lady, (I'm going to assume the owner) told me there was going to be a wait of about 20mins. because she had to run out to do a quick errand (maybe grabbing dinner?). On her way out, she had asked if I was hungry and if I liked a snack for when she return. It was a bit strange for "American" standards of customer service but I guess it's normal everywhere else I've gone to that was run by a Vietnamese family - I apprenticed the offer very much but kindly declined. She ended up giving me a bottle of water and an orange and jokingly saying it's too hot and she didn't want a customer to die in the heat before she came back, haha.
