This is an authentic English style pub. We sat next to the fireplace on a cold day, very cozy atmosphere inside. You order food and drinks at the bar. It's a very traditional English pub! They had a good amount of drink options, local breweries and domestic/international. We ordered the beer cheese crock, the half order is plenty to split between two people! BRB is the original Indy brewpub before there was one on every corner. It deserves a salute for it's staying power. It's a more low-key, casual English style pub for the Broad Ripple area, and it has its merits. It's just that for every merit, there is a demerit rendering it just ok, mediocre. I'm echoing my fellow reviewers, but for the sake of adding to the majority, I'll make it official and echo on. Merits: Lot of menu choices, vegetarian and vegan choices, craft beer on tap, patio seating, and dog friendly patio. The fish was bland, the "beer" batter had the flavor of an old can of Coors Light that no one wanted back in college. The food took forever to get served, way too long for a slow Tuesday night. Long enough for the group of 4 that came AFTER our party of 5 to get their appetizers and entrees. Good food for a good price. Stopped by a few weeks ago and got a Black Bean taco salad which comes with salsa, ranch and sour cream. I've ordered it a few times and this last time was my least favorite. Each time I got the taco salad and the most recent one was almost entirely black beans and a few sliced peppers. Worst service EVER!! Waited over 45 minutes for our food which never arrived. We had to leave without being served since we needed to get back to work. We were the first and only ones in the restaurant when it opened. However several other tables who were seated after us were served before us. When we asked why other tables were served before us the servers were rude. When we asked where our food was, they said they were short staffed in the kitchen. I'm not sure how that explains how other patrons who were seated after us were served before us. One of the patrons served before us was an employee. No manager was present or available!!!! Dear Brewpub, You are my go-to place for vegetarian comfort food in Indianapolis. But somebody has to tell you: your beer is bad. This news best come from someone who loves you, from an old friend. So here I am, trying to break the news gently after being tempted by the siren song of "$3 pints" last night. But let's be frank now. You need to do something about your beer because you are a "brewpub," supposedly, but your house-made beer sucks. It's flat. It has no body. For those folks out there who have thought that maybe Brewpub's beer tasted bad because your unsophisticated palette was unable to appreciate the complexity of this craft beer, that is not the case! It's just not good beer. Now that we have Sun King and Upland and People's brewing tasty beer in the central region of the Hoosier state, Brewpub, your mediocre suds are unacceptable. Watched the bartender take the glass that some guy at the bar had been drinking out of, shove it under the a beer tap and fill the glass to the brim while the tap was submerged in the glass. YUCK! Now everyone that has a beer from that tap is swapping spit with the guy at the bar.. Then I got to watch him pour 4 glasses of foam and slowly scoop the head off each of them with a kitchen spoon so that he could get one beer. Never mind that by then the beer was warm and flat. Such a dysphemism is a perfect one for my glass smelled of bleach and the beer itself, their house IPA, was probably the worse I've ever had. One beer each and we were out pronto. I've been frequenting this place for many years. Let's estimate, eight. It has slowly but surely gone downhill. Food, beer, service- the whole shebang. Sort of a drag. This *is* Broad Ripple's original brewery/restaurant, after all . We still go from time to time because it is easy to get a table and I like their outdoor seating. The last visit was just too terrible to gloss over with those facts though. Garden tacos made with sloppy joe "meat" and the worst beer I've had the displeasure of tasting. Every time I go to Broad Ripple Brewpub I say to myself it will be better next time and every time I am wrong. The beer, service, and food is one disappointment after the other. The only reason why this is not a one star rating is the history which is something you can not ignore. You would think after all these years that the experience would have been better. The experience does not start off great walking down a narrow hallway bumping in to everyone. We waited at the hostess stand for about 10 minutes before anyone showed up and when someone did show up they were very confused. It was like we were in the wrong spot, but the sign definitely said, "Wait HERE to be seated." One couple who showed up while we were waiting decided to skip the wait and seat themselves which made the hostess more confused. The service was about the same for the rest of the night, very confused and lost. The waitress did get the right food out, but when it did I kind of wished they did forget it. I have had a few different items and everything was boring from the presentation to the taste. The only positive thing about the food was the chicken tenders that had a unique crust. While those were good, it is not worth returning. I hate writing bad reviews about classic establishments, but Broad Ripple Brewpub needs an update. The history behind the establishment reflects a fun and unique atmosphere, but this history was not present during my attendance. I want the best of the best to be present in a neighborhood I love so much, but Broad Ripple Brewpub just isn't that. read more

Make sure you arent in any hurry because the service really is THAT slow. Dogs are allowed on the patio so be sure youre ok with that. The menu is a little weird-- sweet potato soup or eggplant and beet sandwiches arent my go to choices, for sure. But I had the small cheese pizza which was quite yummy and just big enough (4 slices). Mmm...beer! Brewpub is absolutely a go to for us when biking to Broadripple. They have a rad patio and big space out front for some brew sipping. The menu is pretty varied and they have some sweet vegetarian entrees. The fish and chips are about as good as they get and I can always get down on an appetizer of root vegetable chips. The meal I had was the bison burger with the pub chips, and I couldn't be happier or more satisfied as I sit writing this review. The burger was perfectly cooked and seasoned. Just enough flavor for me to know that I wasn't eating tartar, but not so much that I couldn't taste the fact I paid more for the bison. Well done enough that it didn't fall apart, but man-alive was it juicy. Kudos to whoever grilled this for me. I'm usually not one for over exalting bread products, but OMG is all I can say about the bun. As something that is normally pretty trivial to me, I was pleasantly surprised by how much this aspect stood out against any other bun I've ever had (excluding pretzel buns of course). Oh, and I love spicy everything so I opted for the ghost pepper cheese. Honestly, I was expecting to be assaulted by heat, but this was not the case. It was one of those magical experiences where you get the flavor of an awesomely hot pepper without the need for a glass of milk. Top notch. On top of all that, the pub chips were extraordinary. Imagine this...you're at a county fair. You get an elephant ear. You tear off a piece and pop it in your mouth. Now that you have that texture in mind...replace sweet batter with potato and the cinnamon and sugar with salt. They were crispy and soft, airy and dense, pillowy and leaden, all simultaneously. Not a lick of salt, pepper, or ketchup was needed. Everything was perfect as is. Normally I automatically assume any place with more than 10-15 menu items will be pretty standard....OK at what they have listed, but not great at anything. Tonight, this was not the case. That being said, I can't wait to get back to the Brewpup to keep trying anything and everything on their menu until they prove me right in those regards. Get the fish and chips, sucker! Their fish and chips are fuh-reaking-nomenal and should not be ignored by you, your mom, her bridge club friends, or your mouth. I want them right now. Their coleslaw is awesome and includes a bit of a horseradish tang. I can't tell if there's shredded radishes in there or horseradish sauce, but i know that i like it. I also know that their coleslaw isn't tooooo creamy like some wayward slaw ruiners like to make it. Also, I had a blueberrry beer. This place has ballin' fish and chips, blueberry beer, amazing slaw, and a great patio. If you can handle all that swag, go check it out! read more

We were in Indy this weekend for a friend's wedding and Friday night, friends of ours that we were staying with decided to expose us to Broad Ripple since it was an area of Indy my husband and I hadn't been to before. We treated our friends to dinner at the Brewpub (their choice) and it was great. Casual and cozy space where you can have pub grub food and delicious microbrews. I tried both the India Pale Ale (pretty good) and the Lawnmower Pale Ale (loved it), while my husband had the Maibock, which he really enjoyed. Our friends and my husband all had the Scotch Eggs as an appetizer and they all loved them, while I sampled the beer cheese. Beer+cheese+bread = winning combination in my book! The menu had lots of good tasting options, but I went simple and had the Lawnmower Chicken sandwich (fried with American Cheese) and potato chips...I loved the sandwich. It was the perfect size and very tasty especially with some ranch dressing on it. My husband enjoyed his Black and Blue Sirloin, and our friends liked their Bangers and Mash. The prices for food and beer are incredibly reasonable and with tip, the total bill for our group of 4 came to $80. Unfortunately it was rainy and chilly on Friday night, so we weren't able to enjoy the outside patio. While it was crowded when we arrived at almost 8 pm, by the time we left at 10:30, the space had cleared out considerably. Definitely seems like a popular spot with the locals. I love microbreweries, so the Broad Ripple Brewpub is definitely a spot we will visit on a future trip to Indy. read more

I was asked to explain why I gave this place a 3 star rating when my review stated that this place is pretty much good. My response is that the rating system is built with a 3 star rating as average or literally "A-OK". That is what I felt about this place. A-OK. I had nothing really negative to say, but nothing positive in particular. I came here again for the second time yesterday, and continue to think that this place is A-OK. This time around I ate, and had what the waitress described as the hands down most popular item on the menu which was a Brisket Sandwich with Applewood Smoked Bacon, Pimento Cheese and sauteed onions. It was good don't get me wrong but it wasn't VERY good. I've had better at places like Twenty Tap for example or actual BBQ places like City BBQ. On the side I had extremely greasy root vegetable chips which again...were perfectly good but not great. This really sums up my feeling for this place, good but not great which is what 3 stars means to me. I still believe this place would do MUCH better on Mass Ave than it does here but I know it has history in Broadripple so would be hard to move. read more

The Brewpub is consistent. That's a huge strength in Broad Ripple. When most other establishments in the neighborhood vary in service and quality depending on the day, time, season, and staffing, you can always expect the same solid fare and drink at the Brewpub. You can also expect the same so-so service. The brews themselves are solid. As the oldest existing brewpub in the state, Broad Ripple carries a legacy which delivers a stable selection of full-bodied beers while also boasting creative seasonal choices. If you're just out for a drink, you won't be disappointed, and while I tend to pick Brugges over the Brewpub if that's my only aim, the Brewpub is a nice way to get away from the main drag of Broad Ripple on a quieter patio near the Monon. If you're looking for food, eye the weekly specials first. The standard fare is good, but not great -- however, there are some real gems every now and then that would tip the scales in favor of the Brewpub as my dinner destination on a given night. Dinner is always best enjoyed with friends, here, as you'll often want to try the stranger creations others are having, so come social and in a sharing mood. It also helps to have friends around when the service is slow or shoddy. It's not horrible, but Broad Ripple has better, and this place deserves better. Every time I've been there, it's been about the same, so don't choose the Brewpub if you're in a hurry or feeling impatient. You'll end up spending a while here, whether you like it or not, so you may as well like it -- bring people you love to be with. read more

I'm not a big fan of English pub food or beer, so this was obviously not the right type of place for me. I went with a large group of friends and the wait was 45 minutes. I stood smooshed against the wall of the tiny entryway with about 20 other people as I waited for our table to come available. I did happen to order a beer, but when the server brought it to the table, she accidentally knocked it against the side of the table. It started foaming everywhere. Instead of apologizing, she exclaimed, "It's a boy!" and walked away. I was left to deal with the foam oozing out all over the place which wasted about half of my beer. Pretty disappointing. I ordered the shepherd's pie which had way too much tomato sauce in it and tasted rather odd. I just didn't enjoy the meal at all. read more

My friends said Broad Ripple was a great neighborhood and Broad Ripple Brewpub was a fun, tasty place we we tried them on Saturday night last weekend. I was really underwhelmed. They were busy- we were told there's a wait....but there are VISIBLE EMPTY TABLES that needed to be bussed. O.o When we were seated our waitress took just shy of FOREVER to take our orders. Their menu is huge (pasta, burgers/sandwiches, traditional "pub food", pizzas, you name it!) and she didn't ask if we had questions or clarify anything.....just let us sit. We finally ordered a round of house beers and the beer cheese crock. The beer cheese crock was ok but said it came with "various" bread that was 2 kinds, not even crusty or warm and came to the table with a skin already forming on it. I ordered the banger and mash (yes, just one- there is a larger portion offered with 2 as well). The banger was ok but kind of bland. The mash was ok but lumpy. The "shallot gravy" was gross and overpowered a lot of the other flavors. The peas were cold and wrinkly. Friends ordered the buffalo burger and the fettuccine alfredo and liked them. Hubs ordered the smoked brisket "burger" and thought it was ok. I only got a chance to order one beer because the waitress was so slow. The beers were ok---nothing blew me out of the water and they were out of the IPA. Pumpkin beer smelled better than it tasted. Two pale ales were good and distinctly different-limping mallard was alright...... Our server who said she'd "be right back with water" -never came back with any... I think the overly large menu and spotty service means I won't make a second trip. read more

If it weren't for the beer mitigating other factors, it would be a two-star. The brews I have experienced in the two times I have been here have been pretty tasty and I would recommend them to anyone. However, I have had the Scotch eggs, peanut pasta, and shepherd's pie. The Scotch eggs were cold but great nonetheless. The pasta was incredibly hot, almost to the point of being inedible. I like hot things, but this was ridiculous. The shepherd's pie resembled more of a stew. It was nothing like what I was expecting. Another saving grace was their honey mustard dressing. It reads more like a vinaigrette and was nice on a summer night. Add to this the lackluster service on both visits... and I am finding it difficult to give it three stars. read more

I will preface this with a comment about how we did have a larger party and I understand that serving a party is no easy task, but.... This was by far the WORST service I have ever encountered! We sat down and waited a FULL 30 mins before our server even took a drink order. Then we waited another 40 mins to order. Over an hour to just order??? When we spoke to the manager about the wait he just responded with ' i will see what i can do'. See what you can do??? How about grabbing a note pad and taking our order?! It was not that busy and our 'lunch' took about 3 hours from start to finish. My husband and I love to take brew tours across areas and we were excited to visit here but based on the attitude of the service in general we will NEVER be back here. ps. I have been a patron at BRPB for years and have never had an issue with the servers or service (but have witnessed plenty of people at the next table over be rude and start typing away on Yelp). Best vegan options in town- I always get the vegan tenderloin or the Seitan Reuben. Servers are laid back but it's a brewpub, so Idk why other reviews are counting that as a negative??? We were directed here by someone at another brewery. That, for me, is a good sell. I was told that it may be too crowded, and to go to some other place if it was. But there was a spot right there on the patio. I was mainly looking for beer, but we were hungry. Parking was a bit atrocious, but it's more the neighborhood than anything. It was also very difficult to get in to the area. We ended up only about a block away though, in a free spot. The patio is nice enough, but features cheap lawn furniture. I'm not looking for white table cloths, but when my chair is from Wal-Mart and cost less than half what I'm paying for my meal, it's annoying. But I'm glad we were outside because of what the inside looked like: dank is the word I'd use. Everything was dark, musty and kind of strange. If they were going for the British pub look, they didn't succeed. The size of the bar really disappointed me: it's supposed to be a brewpub, so why have a bar that's only 5' or so long? And that should have signaled to me, right there, that this is the sort of brewpub that focuses on food, not beer, because that seems to be the case. The beer wasn't awful, but everything was very safe, and a lot of it just wasn't very good. I was impressed that they did nitro/cask pours, but they were served cold. I was told later, by a local bartender who also spoke highly of this place, that their beer is supposed to be more English style. That actually redeems the beer in my mind a little, because it makes sense why some of them tasted as they did. But they're still not good. The food also was not good. I mean, it wasn't bad, where I'd throw it down and say "This is awful" and refuse to eat it, but it was just so mediocre. I got the sausage sandwich, which was served with sauerkraut from the can on a slightly stale roll. And the sausage was undercooked. I got the mashed potatoes for a side, which were good, but were topped with a watery gravy that looked, had the consistency of, and tasted more like sweet coffee than anything. My companion got the vegetarian sloppy joe, which was more like vegetarian chili than anything. She got a side of the vegetables, which were undercooked. The service was relatively slow throughout the meal but the girl was nice, until I asked about a charge at the end of the meal. Both of our standard sides had been fries, but we both decided to change. I noticed (the list of sides along with their prices are at the bottom of the menu) that my mashed potatoes with gravy were $0.25 more than the standard fries, while my companion's veggies were the same price. On the ticket, instead of being upcharged $0.25, I was charged the full $1.75. The server said that this was how it was and it was more a fluke that my companion wasn't charged than me being charged. My whole thing: if you're going to charge the full price for a side substitution, then give me the other side. It's just fair. But we protested and she huffed off, not to return for about 10 minutes after that. I was also irked by the sampler price: $1.25 each, which added up to $10. $10 for eight samples? That seems high, and it would have been nice to know that beforehand. We could have gotten away with "That place kind of sucked" and left it there, but the issue with the ticket, and the fact that I had been deliberately led here by others left me feeling so slighted that I started saying "I should say something to the manager." I'm not the type to usually talk to the manager. In fact, I've done it all of twice in my recent memory: once here and once at the worst Boston Market I'd ever encountered in suburban Atlanta, where I told the guy that his franchise should be taken away and that he should be ashamed of his operation. Here, I just mentioned that it was a bad experience all around and that he should consider worked on the sampler pricing, because $10 is absurd for the quality of that beer. I had already paid, and wanted nothing but to give them feedback that I hoped would help them. Will it? Probably not, because this place is so busy that they don't really need me and they don't need my feedback. I'm sure I was written off as just a self-righteous asshole. I would offer this to readers though: there are four brewpubs in the Broad Ripple area so, if you're looking to patronize one for dinner, your options are not limited and are much better elsewhere. 1*, but 2* when I realized that the beer was supposed to be English style. It would have helped to have known that, just as it would have helped to have known beforehand the sampler pricing. I'm very happy to continue to give Broad Ripple Brewpub 5 stars. I came here again tonight with a friend and we enjoyed the walk from my house in Broad Ripple and snagged a table out on the patio. Having had happy hour at my house, we opted for water and saved our calories for our entrees, but believe me...I was tempted to get a glass of wine since the prices were so reasonable - about $5/glass. There is an entire page on the menu for Lighter options. The same entrees are on the regular menu, but smaller portions. I had the fish and chips and my friend had the black bean taco salad. Another enjoyable walk back to my house to work off dinner and feeling quite happy and satisfied. Here are the (less wordy and beer nerdy) excerpts from that entry. Viva la Brewpub! ----- Many of you know that I used to live in the wonderful neighborhood of Broad Ripple, on Indianapolis' north side. This trendy blip on the map is home to two spectacular independent brewpubs: Broad Ripple Brewpub, an English-style pub specializing in traditional English ales and hearty pub food with tons of vegetarian options, and Brugge Brasserie, specializing in all things Belgian. Anyway, back to Broad Ripple Brewpub. I have always liked this place. But being away for so long has made the heart grow fonder. I LOVE this place. If I still lived in the neighborhood, I would be there at least four times a week. Good beer with many of my favorite styles? Check. Smoke free? Has been for years, check. Lots and lots of good veggie options? Check. Wi-fi for when you're chillin' at the bar alone? Check. Walking distance to everything? Check. So seriously, Broad Ripple Brewpub, I love you. As was our plan, this is the perfect place to get some beer and a bite prior to heading to the cathedral of college basketball, Butler University's Hinkle Fieldhouse. Poured into a nonic pint glass, the Replic Ale, an oatmeal coffee stout, is an inky black with a one finger light tan head that dissipates slowly. The flavor up front is beautiful - thick and hearty, you can really taste the oats and malts. Coffee and hops linger around in the finish with only a slight alcohol taste. One thing of note (that makes me love the brew pub that much more) is that their pints all come out at the right temperature. None of this waiting around for it to warm noise. Nope. Perfect from the second it hits the table. For as hearty as this beer is, it went down really smooth. The Brew Pub is always sure to have at least two beers on cask, and as much as I enjoyed the Replic Ale, it would be a crime not to have at least one cask ale. I opted for the Wee Alec Heavy, a Scotch style wee heavy. Poured into a tulip glass, this amber, almost red beer is syrupy sweet. The warmer, smoother texture of a cask ale brings out the syrup-like qualities even more. Though it's not characteristic of the style, I think it would be nice to have a little more hops in here. Not bad, but nothing compares to the Replic Ale. As for the food, I got the vegan shepherd's pie. Rich and hearty, it's a pretty solid interpretation of a traditional shepherd's pie. The veggie crumbles aren't my favorite, but good nonetheless. Good enough to order again for sure. Oh yeah. Get the pretzels with beer cheese. It'll change your life. read more

Great, great place. Always my regular eating joint in Broadripple. The beers are interesting with a rotating stock and the staff is educated enough to recommend a beer that would complement your meal. The service itself is actually a little disappointing. It always seems a little sluggish for how many people are in there. And if the joint is downright crowded, well, forget about it. Once, we were waiting over thirty minutes for the check, and the waitress even managed to snub all of our flagging down attempts, so we eventually gave up and left a pile of cash that we were pretty sure was enough to cover the whole kitten-caboodle. But don't let that deter you from giving it a shot. The menu is a brilliantly crafted spread of twists on old favorites. Watch out for the BLT though, they put this weird German Spam-like stuff on it, which they'll happily leave off for a much better sandwich. read more

Beer- good. Food- OK. Service- bad. To elaborate: get the Hopsicle if you like IPAs. It was the universal favorite @ our table. Mexican white wings were our highlight food wise. A wing with jalapeño wrapped in bacon and slathered in sauce? Um, yeah. Fish & chips were sub par. I've had much better at Chatham Tap & Union Jack's. Also, they were out of coleslaw which is supposed to come w/the fish. The waitress told us they were out and walked away. When she came back, we asked if we could get anything to replace the coleslaw as our side. She said she guessed we could get tabouli instead. Then, she came back and said they were out of that too but didn't offer any other options. So we prompted her, could we have chips or fries or something? She seemed very put out by this and said, "Really? You just want regular chips?" Well, no we don't, but apparently you're all out of everything else. I've been here several times since moving to Broad Ripple. Everything here is "okay" from the food and service to the ambiance. This place has indoor and outdoor seating, which I really appreciate on summer days. BRB has a pretty good selection of beer- I can always find something yummy to try. They also have a good selection of food. Last time I was in, I asked them to make me a buffalo chicken sandwich (not on the menu) and they were happy to accommodate me. I bring family and friends here when I want a place with something for everyone. Not really a good place for kids though. read more

I've only been here a handful of times, but each experience has been pretty ok! Small place, but I've seen big groups here, small groups, couples, and families with kids - so it's probably ok to bring any type of group! Food-wise, you'll see all kinds of options! Standard pub fare, pub fare with a vegetarian/vegan spin (Tofu "Fish" and Chips, come on!), to super healthy veggie appetizers (like a hummus plate with veggies). I usually stick with the standard fish and chips (which they also offer in a 'light' portion), but I'd be eager to try the Nancy's Nutty burger next time. Beer-wise, you can't be disappointed with a mix of beer from their brewpub and other local beers. Something for a beer taste tester to the all-out beer lover. I go for the food, for the vegetarian options, but my husband can always find something he likes too and my bff loves the nutty burger. I know fried food isn't the healthiest, but I love the veggie chips, just wish they had more beet and sweet potato. The seitan wings are a favorite too. I love the building too - it's old, but has such great character. The ceiling is lovely. I always look forward to going here as a treat. Thanks for having such a lovely menu! read more
