    Gates BBQ brisket

Picked up 3 meals to go: 2 beef on bun with fries then a double decker and fries for my husband. I then try to get some sauce cups to go. Now you have to *pay* for sauce? $60 later, I bring the food home and the brisket is SO thick and fatty it was inedible. Gates is known for their thin sliced meat candy and this was garbage. Sorry, I'm never going back.

The "Hi, may I help you" sign

I've eaten BBQ at some of the best places in the country, but when I want the best smoked ham in the country, I come to Gates! There's something so welcoming when you walk in and the ladies behind the counter say "Hi, may I help you?" that makes it so familiar. This is a no frills BBQ joint, with some of the best food you'll ever taste! And by the way, their Original sauce is the best BBQ sauce I've ever had!

Oh how I love Gates! Almost every time I come back home, I make sure to stop and get Gates. If you're further from the city, this may be the closest location to you, but I could be mistaken. I always order the turkey on bun (which comes with fries), and an order of baked beans. These are the best beans I've ever had, hands down! You can try the different types of barbecue sauces, which included sweet and spicy, original, and hot. I do have one disclaimer, and this is just something that I learned to decipher since I was a little girl. Once you step into the building, you need to know what you're ordering, because you're going to get asked pretty quickly. Most people already know, but you need to almost look at the menu in the car before you walk in, or else you're going to feel a little anxiety, haha. No, but in all seriousness, I always give a fair warning to any non-Kansas citians lol! Other than that, the service was extremely great. There was a lady who worked there who was so kind in refilling our waters and bringing us sauces to try. As for me, like always, I'll always be back to grab my go to at this KC staple!

This place use to be a KC institution, but when you have a help wanted sign on the front of your restaurant for the past 5 years this is what you get with food quality and service. The thing that is so surprising is the Gates off 40 Hwy by the Stadiums is excellent in both. I don't understand how you can place on order for $178.00 and get one little plastic container of one sauce. I grabbed one more of another flavor on the counter and was told to put that back honey it's $0.55 cents. Gates, Hi, may I help you??? Yea right.

NOONER with brisket fries and a long end ribs

Grew up eating Gates so pulling up and smelling that wonderful smell in the air brings back great memories! I know my order by heart the Nooner with beef and crispy fries and a long end with sweet and mild sauce! Lol we did take out and it moves right along with the line! Lunch time it's busy! The food was hot and fresh! I was very happy when you have that bbq craving and you get those ribs and I love the rib tips! Oh I can tear those up! When the craving hits I'll be back!

My delicious short end with Xtra hot BBQ gates sauce

It was nice not being there in so many years. I got 2 short ends and fries and a pepper also a bottle of extra hot sauce. The attendant was a nice lady outside of being on her phone . My order was correct and my fries hot gave me more to than I could eat. She was professional and nice and the lady that checked me out. I may return. I tell you the way those ladies wrap food lol it's a journey to get off. I also went at 8:30 at night it was very slow and peaceful. If I smell gates again this will probably be my location to stop in and visit.

    Gates Fries/ no seasoning

I came here to grab a late lunch before class. The lady who took my order was completely in a rush, to the point where she didn't here me say hold the bread for a bun on my combo sandwich. She did the same thing when I decided to order fries. Before I could tell her to put seasoning on them, she immediately started wrapping the clear plastic wrap around the box. I don't know why she was so in a rush for, it was quite as a church mouse in there. I didn't bother saying anything due to me being pressed for time. When I got to my destination to eat my sandwich the beef was dry and appeared old. Which is very disappointing considering a sandwich and fries was $26 and some change. I really like Gates, as it was my first time at this location and by the looks of it I won't be back here, I'll continue to keep going to my initial locations on Main Street and Paseo.

My favorite BBQ spot in the Kansas City metro area. I don't like BBQ Sauce, but I love theirs. Beef brisket is top tier.

Le bf always, always gets the smoked turkey sandwich and I typically resort to the meat plates woth burnt ends, sausage and brisket. The kitchen sits behind glass windows, allowing you to see the magic behind the scenes. The Taste of Kansas City platter is more than enough to feed three people. We ordered spare ribs, brisket, pulled pork, burnt ends, and Fiery Wings (they were out of bone-in chicken). The Fiery Wings had great flavor but were served a little cold. The baked potato was generously sized and wasn't overloaded with sour cream. The spinach salad was refreshing and fresh. The vinaigrette had excellent flavor and contrasted beautifully with the smoked bacon on top. The Cheesy Corn was underwhelming. The texture was very runny, and it lacked flavor. The Hickory Pit Beans are slow-cooked and loaded with chunks of hickory-smoked brisket, pork, and sausage... THESE ARE GREAT! They're a bit on the sweet side, but they're absolutely worth ordering. Our waitress was fantastic! Despite the restaurant being packed with all the FIFA World Cup excitement, she checked on us frequently and kept our drinks full throughout the meal

For my sides, I got Mac and cheese, cheesy corn and potato salad. Turkey sandwich was good, per le bf. It had a good smokey flavor and wasn't dry! My brisket was also quite moist with minimal fatty parts, which is what I prefer. Sausage was ok, had to really chew into it. What I'm most disappointed about is the ribs. The ribs were good, but for almost $20, I got 3 pieces. They stated for the ribs plate, you'd get about 3 or 4, depending on the weight, but it would be nice to note that down somewhere that when paying $20, expect 3 pieces. Ive gotten double that and about the same price at other bbq spots, hence my disappointed and surprised when opening the container. Mac and cheese had huge shell noodles, which was cool but on the watery side. Potato salad was decent, got the job done but a little bland. Sauces are also on the tangy side, and if you're a sweet bbq sauce gal like me, it wasn't hitting the spot. Overall was nice giving a try, but will prob be going elsewhere for my bbq needs!

Someone from the restaurant replied to a comment I had made, rattling off menu recommendations and encouraging me to stop by. It worked. By the time Father's Day rolled around, Meat Mitch had become the destination. When we arrived, the place looked exactly like the kind of barbecue joint people hope to discover. The patio was alive. Kids chased each other through the crowd. Cornhole bags flew through the air. Families lingered around picnic tables while smoke drifted through the summer air. We were quoted an hour-and-a-half to two-hour wait. No problem. It was Father's Day. Barbecue and patience have always gone hand in hand. So we made an afternoon of it. My son found other kids to play with. My wife ducked into Billie's Grocery for a coffee and a snack. We wandered the Plaza, killed time, and enjoyed the day. Frankly, Meat Mitch seemed worth waiting for. A 90-to-120-minute wait eventually became three hours. That's when the story changed. At one point we sat near the expo window because the Toast waitlist showed we were next in line for a table. From there, we watched the operation for over an hour. The bottleneck appeared to be the expo station. Food runners stood ready while plates piled up in the window and tickets were worked one at a time. The entire process moved at a pace that would make the DMV ask if everything was okay. Meanwhile, managers were making rounds apologizing to guests, comping checks, and handing out gift cards. Every few minutes another table looked confused, frustrated, or defeated. As I listened to conversations around me, a pattern emerged. Multiple tables said they had already waited 45 minutes to an hour for food after being seated. That's when it clicked. The Toast waitlist showed we were next in line for a table. We weren't next to eat. We were next to sit. By this point my son was having a better Father's Day than I was. He'd made friends, played games, and explored the Plaza. I spent mine watching plates age in the expo window like they were being dry-aged alongside the brisket. What really broke my brain was watching carryout orders continue to leave the building while the dining room was drowning. If your quoted wait has turned into three hours, managers are comping meals, and guests are openly frustrated, maybe it's time to stop accepting new problems and start solving the ones already sitting in your restaurant. Then there was the expo station. For over an hour, I watched the same pair of gloves touch faces, clothing, equipment, tickets, and food. By the end they were shiny with grease, stretched loose from overuse, and inspiring absolutely zero confidence. I've seen cast-iron skillets retired sooner than those gloves. I've worked in restaurants long enough to know everyone has bad days. Father's Day is chaos. People call out. Equipment breaks. Tickets stack up. It happens. But after three hours--already an hour longer than the maximum wait we were quoted--I never got to try the barbecue that brought me there in the first place. Unfortunately, I can't review the food. The only thing I got to sample was my patience. And that's a shame. Because everything about Meat Mitch made me want to like Meat Mitch. The patio was great. The atmosphere was great. The energy was great. It felt like the kind of place where you could spend an entire afternoon with people you enjoy being around. In a way, that's what made the experience so frustrating. The promise of a great Father's Day was sitting right in front of me. I just never made it to the table. Update: After sharing my experience with management, Meat Mitch reached out, accepted responsibility for what happened, and invited me back. I appreciate the professionalism and plan to give them another opportunity.
