My wife and I had just taken our kids on a Disney cruise and had decided to stay a night in Saint Simon's; we have friends in the area and this little town has a wonderful laid-back charm to it that we loved when we visited the first time. We booked a room at a nearby resort and headed into town to grab lunch. We had seen Brogen's and it seemed like the type of place to grab a quick bite while enjoying the outdoor seating. Let me clearly state that my issue with Brogen's is the fact that my bill was significantly overcharged, though the service and food were average (and I did not have a problem with the experience). Staff was pleasant; the food (my wife had the chicken sandwich, I had a corned beef reuben & sweet potato fries, the kids had chicken strips & french fries) was typical bar fare but overly greasy (which some may like). During our meal, everyone was helpful and our servers (two college-aged women) were fairly prompt. For this review, it is important to know that I did not have any preconceived issues with this restaurant (nor was aware of any problems the staff had with myself, my wife, or my children while there). It was how our bill was handled that inspired me to write a review and warn people about what someone among the waitstaff/management had done with my charged bill after we had left. My family's bill amounted to $43 (a $9 tip was included, bringing the bill to $52), but I was charged over $76 for the entire tab. I followed recommended procedure for paying with credit/debit at places like this by clearly blocking my numbers to make it very difficult to change the charged amount when filling out the bill. No automatic gratuity was included and my tip amounted to the usual 20% of the meal. I do not know who charged our bill, but the amount I was charged was more than $24 over the amount that our meals came to: THIS IS BLATENT, OUTRIGHT THEFT. Calls placed did nothing to resolve this issue. As out-of-town visitors, I realize that this complaint will likely never be dealt with effectively (as I live 11 hours away and can't personally visit management to deal with the issue), but at least I can warn people to watch out for those individuals working here, as there is a CROOK among the waitstaff or management---at least as of June 2013. read more

My friend Neal Youman passed away on October 11th and on October 19th the owner of Brogen's opened up on a Sunday to let us all celebrate his life. We were disappointed with our meal here. They were busy but not full and it took 40 minutes to get our food. A few people around us were complaining about the food being cold but at least ours was hot. Most of the food was overly salty and the kids burger was really over-cooked. This is a fun place to be when near the pier or in st simons in general. The food is typical bar food, but it was pretty decent. At night its a fun place to hang out and grab some beers, even same dancing on the upstairs patio! We've always loved coming here for a beer. It's got a local appeal with a touch of dive bar. Great feel. We enjoyed the fantastic burgers on occasion as well. They truly are the best on the island. We now go here to eat lunch and dinner. The fried shrimp is solidly and consistently good. The rib eye sandwich and all of the chicken sandwiches. All of the sides are good. They have homemade chips. I usually don't care too much for fries, but these are good. The onion rings are fantastic. The chicken fingers are popular. We tried them as a table appetizer and were very pleased. Not the same place you expect such good food, especially since it's surrounded by great restaurants in the village. If you want a change of pace and inexpensive good food, come here. My first bar that I ever went to. Going back as an older person it still has its charm. The food is good and the drinks are cold. If you stop by the pier you have to stop by for a beer at Brogen's. The only change I would make is if I owned it I would want to expand and have some constant entertainment. Good place for tourist and locals alike. read more

We had a great experience. Great bar food and not a dive. We came on a Wednesday evening with the family while visiting from Jekyll Island vacay. Would love to come back with just the hubby on a weekend. Seating inside and outside. We sat outside on second floor to watch the water and kind of a sunset. I'm not usually a fan of grungy college bars and grills (this is a bar for Georgia fans), and I'm sure that a crowded gameday experience here is probably different than my quiet, weekday afternoon in early August here (before the fall semester starts, but after the kids of most tourists are back in grade or high school). All of that said, I had a really, really good and juicy cheeseburger here; and they refill your Sprite without waiting to be asked, and they had multiple Olympic events on the TVs. Finally...a seaside restaurant with grilled (not fried) seafood!!! Went here for dinner on Saturday night with my parents and two kids under 4. Only took about 15 min to be seated. We sat on street level and had a decent view of downtown area and ocean in distance. We were pleased with the friendly service and quality of food. Ordered the grilled Mahi sandwich which was soooo yummy and someone else had the best shrimp po boy sandwich probably ever they said. Fries were great too. Prices were decent. About $9 for Mahi sandwich and fries. Would definitely go again next time we visit. Probably try the shrimp po boy next time :-) read more

We've eaten there twice and the food has been very good. I like the homemade onion rings. The fish sandwiches are excellent. Any of the waiters will accommodate you. The service was prompt as well. It took over half an hour for our food to arrive, including a full 20 minutes before we got our appetizers. The chicken salad was bland, but the ranch dipping sauce was delicious.
