Unfortunately the spring rolls lacked flavor, the crab fried rice was the same; something missing on my palate. We finished up with some garlic shrimp that just didn't hit the mark; very disappointing. I may have to come back to check out the Pho. I'd also get that succulent beef again. Ate lunch here on a Tuesday with some friends and there were several empty tables at about 12:30. The male server/cashier quickly served ice water upon being seated. We waited for another person to join us and when she did, he gave her a minute to look over the menu and was prompt in taking our order. I had the Chicken Rice, which is basically a scoop of fluffy white rice with 2 lemongrass chicken thighs and some cabbage pieces, cucumber slices, and one tomato. The flavor was on point and juicy. This crab soup special from broken rice easily makes my "top 3 best things I've eaten" on this trip. We went to The Pig and the Lady the day before, which is the Vietnamese restaurant everyone recommended to us and both of us loved broken rice more. Quick Overview: Granted I have been spoiled by the rich broth that is served in Chinatown locations... there is a personal bar for my pho. That is the reason for okay rating. I didn't find anything special about the cuisine or atmosphere in-comparison to the neighbors. I think if they drop their prices than it would be a easier decision to eat there over some of the other delicious hot spots. Details: The atmosphere is sterile, so it doesn't make a unique experience or the feeling of being somewhere special. Which wouldn't matter if it was insanely yummy. The service team is great. They are very friendly and have a great personality. We paid about $15 bucks each (no drinks) and all three ordered pho. I order the lemongrass beef, which is a popular selection. My husband and son ordered the beef pho. Honestly, their dish had better flavor than mine. The broth tasted richer. The lemongrass broth is supposed to be spicer version. It was not spicy at all. I am not a spice queen by an means... but i had to add chili paste to it. Again, I think the real issue is I know I can go to Chinatown and pay $9.50 and get some amazing pho. Or pay $15 bucks for a more complex dish and fun dining experience at one of the neighboring spots. Conclusion: I wouldn't recommend it, unfortunately I probably wouldn't go back. I was really excited to try Broken Rice out after reading all the positive reviews. And after eating at several great places around Kaimuki, I figured this place would be a home run. Definitely a big let down... We ordered the Broken Rice Special ($18) and the plate came with a very thin grilled pork chop, a small chicken thigh, a lego sized cube of pork loaf, some pork floss and a scoop of rice. Highly disappointed, but at least it tasted ok. You'd think if they were giving you such small portions then it would taste incredible, nope. We also ordered a Shaking Beef Banh Mi ($16), the price wasn't even advertised so I was just as surprised as anyone when I got the bill. Again, tasted ok, I could have gotten the same Banh Mi in Chinatown for $6-8. Now I know better. The sandwich contained slightly seasoned beef, pickled carrots/daikon and cilantro. No cucumber, jalapeño or mayo... Even Pig and the Lady doesn't charge this much and their Banh mis are amazing (I'm talking KCC and Blaisdell farmers markets, not the restaurant). Broken Rice grossly over charges for mediocre food. If those two dishes where any indication of the rest of the menu, you'll be kicking yourself afterwards. Do yourself a favor and just drive to Chinatown. So many inexpensive and tasty options. You'll save an arm and leg and still have enough to pay for parking. read more

This place is quick and efficient. The food tastes good, they are taking all the proper safety precautions, and it is a local mom and pop business. The spring rolls are a little light when it comes to portion size, but they make up for it with the size of the entrées. I've passed by Broken Rice on my way home and never knew what kind of food they served so when a friend suggested we have lunch there, I was happy to go. We both ordered a tofu vege rice plate & the other person in our party ordered a shrimp rice plate. The vegetarian plate was delicious and came with a spring roll type sauce. Shrimp looked ono too & the "broken rice" on both plates were soft, fluffy & delicious!!!! Everything was so wonderful & the people serving us were nice too!!! We started with the spring rolls with long rice, mint and lettuce to wrap. The rolls weren't greasy even with being deep fried. It was delicious even without the dipping sauce. My friend had lavender lemonade and she raved about it. She enjoyed it immensely. My friend ordered one of the Tofu Vegetables and enjoyed the dish, eating practically everything. I had Special Broken Rice, with a Pork chop, chicken, shredded pork, with a cute little meatloaf, accompanied with their house slaw and rice. Very tasty and satisfying. I have eaten here about 4-5 times since I moved to Honolulu in January of 2019. This quickly became my go to spot for solid Vietnamese food. I have yet to try other Pho spots around town and I will, but with Broken Rice being so solid and right by my work, it is hard not to come here when I need my Pho fix. I have had the soup dishes, the rice dishes and the noodle dishes and this spot reminds me of my favorite Pho spots in LA (Golden Deli and Pho Super Bowl). I would get Pho all the time with friends and family back in LA so when I need a little bit of the vibe to help with the homesickness, this spot helps quite a bit. I would highly recommend. Located between Tamara's by edge and Aztecs mexican restaurant on the ever so popular Waialae Ave that is filled with many restaurant options. Parking can be found either on near on Waialae Ave with a meter, in the parking lot behind the restaurant with the meters, or to the back right lot where you can pull a ticket if you have no change for the meters. This restaurant is only a week old but reservations can be made. They probably could fit maybe 30 people? It's small but if you can get a seat, then just get some takeout. Restaurant is clean with fresh paint and a different layout of what use to be the former Verde. I came here with my hubby and two of my friends. We started off with summer rolls and spring rolls. It cost $8 for each dish. The summer rolls had four pieces with a homemade peanut sauce. The summer rolls were made fresh to order with generous a two half pieces of a shrimp. The spring rolls dish had about 5 pieces with the lettuce, mint, and the garnishings and sweet chili sauces. The spring roll was crisp and resonabky seasoned. I had the crab fried rice. Not your average fried rice. It was made with that com tam rice which is that fine grain rice almost like couscous. It was made with king crab, egg, and vegetables and served in a bowl. It was a nice take on fried rice and not something I could make at home. Cost $16. My husband had their brokenrice com tam special which was their big dish and had pork chop, chicken, meat loaf, noodle omelet, lettuce, sauce, and their com tam rice. It cost $16 but my hubby's appetite was curbed with this dish made for a long. This is a family owned restaurant with signature dishes from their own recipes. Been wanting to try this place out for a while, and I'm so glad I did! The crab fried rice smelled so good in the car (I got takeout) and tasted even better. Finally got to try Broken Rice after it's been sitting in my bookmarks of places to go try. I wish I had gone sooner! We got the beef noodle soup and the crab noodle soup. The crab broth was light and not super greasy or fatty with slight notes of tomato. It comes with vermicelli noodles and not your traditional flat rice noodles that you would get in a normal bowl of pho. My favorite part of this was the seafood balls that came with it. The taste of crab was definitely the star of the show which is a good thing because it was so delicious! Tasted literally like a crab cake. The beef noodle soup had a rich and hearty tasting broth. You can definitely tell that it was made from scratch because of the quality. This comes with your traditional flat rice noodles, but omg so much meat. There's way more meat than you would get in a bowl of pho anywhere else. I mean that bowl was packed! It was very delicious as well, but also had hints of lemongrass which added a nice refreshing dimension to this bowl. 20/10 would recommend. Uncle is super nice and makes sure you're taking care of. After much excitement and endless recommendations I finally got the time to try this new spot. Perfect location, easy parking and right on Waialae. Walk inside and it's super cute, cozy, and clean. Wait staff was friendly and we sat down right away but that's where he positive just about ends. We ordered 1 iced coffee 1 soda and 2 items off their very small menu. The iced coffee itself took about 40 minutes ( and it taste like straight dirt while I think Starbucks is acceptable )and the first ordered of food came out 1 hour in but it was the completely wrong order. Don't forget we ordered 2 items, the waiter did. About 10 minutes later they asked us what the second order was because they forgot to write it down. At this point we have been here over an hour and you would think with a menu so small that you would be ready for a half full restaurant because it wasn't full. Ending on a positive note they comped our whole meal since we didn't take one bite of the wrong 1 item that they brought out. I was invited by my friend to eat at Broken Rice restaurant on their first night. They did a private dinner/ trial run for friends and family. After years of seeing their private photos of them cooking at home it was my first time to actually try their dishes! The food here was awesome! Bun Bo Hue was amazing and the best I've had on the island! We also had the grilled chicken, grilled pork with Vermicelli noodles all were good! I liked the texture of their noodles here and the fish sauce had great flavor! Their spring rolls were delicious, perfectly crispy and very tasty! Nothing was oily, or too salty we felt the food was flavored just right! Finished off with dessert. Get the condensed milk gelato and coffee!!! Amazing! For those who will visit please keep this in mind. This restaurant is family owned and operated they are first time restaurant owners attempting their dream to share with the world their passion for cooking and sharing their home made dishes. Just ok. My friend and I ordered takeout about a 1/2 hour before their afternoon closing time, and the guy taking our call in order said it would take about 30 minutes for our order to be ready. When my friend went to pick up, there was absolutely no one in there. Why it would take so long? Who knows. For the food, we ordered the crab fried broken rice and the spring rolls with vermicelli. The rice dish lacked flavor, tho it did have good-sized pieces of crab. Just meh (or even less than that because it's kind of pricey too), wouldn't order it again. The spring rolls were delicious. Crunchy, well-filled, and came with the vermicelli and sliced lettuce. I personally found it hard to eat since I had to put a little of everything one by one into my mouth. I'd just prefer to have a whole leaf of lettuce and roll the spring roll and noodles in it. I think a better Vietnamese restaurant can be found in the area. read more

My wife and I agonized over where to go for our anniversary dinner. We heard of this place from a friend and we knew that there are many great restaurants on Waialaie so we decided to take a chance and go somewhere different and not the usual Waikiki spots. We walk in. The restaurant is clean and the server was very nice and sweet. We liked the spring rolls...but that is where it ended...my wife ordered the pork broken rice and I ordered pork rice vermicelli. We both felt our dishes were too cold. I dont really write reviews but this place is so good, I have to write one. Newbie mistake... We ate everything and realized we didnt take any food pics, except for the banana tapioca =( Wow! This place is very clean and everything tastes amazing! You can tell they put a lot of thought into anything you can think of. From not letting the typical sauces be left on the table because of unsanitary reasons to their vietnamese dishes. My hubby and I ordered like 4 different plates and they were all very tasty =) We ordered spring rolls, Bun bo Hue (spicy noodle soup), crab fried rice (they use real king crab and I was told they use the fresh ones and not the pre cracked ones!) and the pork chop plate. I really love the broken rice that come with all rice plates and I am not a rice eater. We also ordered dessert but we were wayyyy too full! The crab fried rice was so delicious, I could tell that the rice was made in a wok that made the rice slightly crunchy. The shaking beef was even better. It had just the right amount of saltiness. My friend and I kept eating the beef and it was soft enough to chew. This plate was the winner! I also got the cold coffee. At first it was too sweet, however afterwards I let the ice melt and it was perfect! If you don't like your coffee too sweet, please ask them to use less sugar. The Beef Pho was outstanding. The broth was tasty but light and refreshing with large slices of tender buttery beef and two beef meatballs. Add bean sprouts, lemongrass, lemon wedge and jalapeño and it is simply delicious! The spring rolls were crispy and flavorful with dipping sauce that complimented its taste and did not overwhelm it. The Shaking Beef was the best dish of all with large chunks of rib eye steak, juicy and sautéed in a garlic sauce that perfectly accentuated the taste. Of course, the broken rice was light and delicious with a large portion to perfectly go with the rib eye chunks. The entrees are all accompanied by a salad. Dessert was a wonderful surprise with banana tapioca slightly sweet and not dominated by the coconut milk. It was perfect as chunks of banana was scooped in each spoonful. Off the menu was the French Vietnamese Coffee Affogato with vanilla gelato, condensed milk and a small espresso pitcher of the coffee to pour to your liking atop the gelato. Simple perfection and a wonderful way to end the delicious meal. The service was personal and rendered with attentiveness and courtesy. This is a family venture and each member works inside the kitchen and in the dining room. There is a warmth to the ambience, with clean bistro-inspired decor and a simplicity that harkens to a day when it felt so personal to enter someone's home to sit and be dazzled by delicious food that comforts the heart, mind and soul. This is a place that you need not enter if you are rushed. We were greeted upon entering the restaurant There was only one couple in there around 7:30 p.m. The restaurant is cute and I like their minimalistic decor. The menu looked great and I immediately took to the grilled shrimp plate. Three of my other friends each ordered a different plate and a side of crab fried rice for us to share. The crab fried rice arrived and it wasn't as tasty as it smelled. Everyone seemed to enjoy the meat on their plate and my shrimp was good.
