I've heard good things previously about this place by my coworker! My bf and I always walk past and eat next door at Surfing Pig. I was craving pho for lunch one day so my friend and I grabbed some from here and it was a great choice *two thumbs up*. I just ended up getting a beef pho and Vietnamese iced coffee. Broken Rice is undoubtedly my favorite pho spot!! Their broth is so flavorful. Recently I had just gotten over a cold and needed a soup fix. No joke, this was the only broth I was able to taste in a week! My favorites are the pho bo (beef noodle soup) and the bun bo hue (beef lemongrass soup). Both are completely divine and have ruined other pho restaurants for me. I love coming here as a vegetarian because they have a hearty , yummy bowl of vegetarian broth based pho. It comes with stir fried broccoli, fried garlic, cauliflower, and even "fake meat" (I think it's Seitan not sure ?). It's a really nice size, and has a good deep flavor. Price is a couple dollars higher than neighboring Vietnamese restaurants. I would skip the vegetarian spring rolls. Pricey+don't give enough greens (got like two pieces of lettuce each time I ordered and a tiny sprig of mint). When my brother told me that the owner made him feel extremely uncomfortable who completely disregarded that he was there for over 20 minutes, I told my brother that maybe the guy was really busy and was unaware of the fact that he was there, benefit of a doubt right? ...Wrong! This guy, just does not care about his customers. He told me this himself! I can finally truly understand how my brother must have felt receiving such a lackluster and low level service.. Called at 12 30 pm to order 2 banh mis, the owner answered and told me that it would take 25 to 30 minutes. Got there at 1 pm, he starts yelling at me saying "I told you we are so busy! it will take 25 to 30 minutes! Why you come so early ? Now you have to wait outside another 15 minutes. Food not ready." There were only a table of 6 people and the rest?....empty. I told him that I came in exactly at the time that he requested. He gives me a blank stare and hands me the check. I was pretty speechless at this point. Being yelled at in front of other customers for coming in on time? He told me to wait outside in the scorching heat despite all the open tables inside. I have never felt so undervalued and underappreciated. DEAR OWNER OF BROKEN MOUTH: Just say 45 minutes instead of 30 next time so you don't have to yell at your customers! My family was waiting in the car as well and were truly disgusted by his demeanor. I called him and asked for a refund and he told me that he didn't care if customers thought he was rude or not, that he will not refund me despite him seeming to be extremely irritated by giving him business?? If he is the one who was unable to serve his guest in a timely manner I mean, given 30 minutes as requested and reprimand the customer that they came too early, I think he either 1. Needs to remember what time it was when the customer called. Check his EGO out the door and should remember that word spreads fast here, if he keeps this type of horrible demeanor up towards his customers, he will definitely lose more businesses and the fact that he does not care what the customers think, customers will not care to enter his establishment as well. 2. Be appreciative and at least show a little remorse for not serving your food as you gave promised in a timely manner. Instead of yelling at your customers, have them wait inside instead of kicking them out in the hot sun if there are plenty of seats available inside! .... I had not heard of broken rice in many years. I used to buy broken rice at 99 Ranch Market way back around the turn of the millenum, when I lived in the San Francisco Bay Area. I like the texture of the broken rice and of course, love love love the flavor of jasmine rice. But to theme a whole restaurant on this rice? It simply does not seem special or versatile enough. Looking at the menu, i think it is just a clever name rather than a theme. Dinner partner ordered vermicelli with veggie spring rolls and I ordered the tofu and vegetables with broken rice. I believe these are the only 2 vegetarian dishes. The vermicelli was nothing special. About on par with other Vietnamese restaurants. Not noteworthy. As for the tofu and vegetables, it tasted somewhat like lemongrass tofu but with more vegetables. The veggies were pretty flavorful and well-cooked, and I enjoyed that. But the tofu was dry and did not have any flavor at all, as if they were just tossed in after they had cooked the veggies. Dipping it in the sauce helped but not too much. The broken rice was nice and fluffy and it was good to eat it again after so many years. But it couldn't really pull the dish out of its unremarkable-ness. I did enjoy the picked cabbage. I expected the typical sweet pickle flavor of the daikon/carrot mixture that is pretty ubiquitous in Vietnamese dishes. But the cabbage was more salty than sweet and had only a slight sour flavor. Tasted closer to a Japanese pickle. Dinner partner did order the iced coffee and really enjoyed it. He said it had more coffee than condensed milk so it had a more intense coffee flavor. Service was good. But there was a mix up where my dish came out 10 minutes after the vermicelli. They were apologetic about the error, so no problem. The decor used simple, muted colors that worked. It gave the restaurant a clean, modern feel without being trendy and intrusive. Would I go back? Yes. Although there isn't much of a vegetarian selection. It is not a destination restaurant (and it does not claim to be) but it is fine for a neighborhood restaurant. read more

We just arrived to Oahu from living overseas for almost 5 years and we were craving Pho really bad. Found this place on yelp and decided to try it out. I'm so glad we did! The area it's in looked like a popular area for all types of restaurants. Anyway, as soon as we stepped in the owner welcomed us with a friendly smile and asked us where we wanted to sit since the place was pretty empty, we arrived just before dinner rush. We had the noodle soup with tendon, beef, etc. soup was very tasty...looks like they simmer the broth for hours. The lemongrass pork chop with veggies and rice was also delicious, but I would have wanted more salad with this dish. I want to try the king crab fried rice next time I'm there. Husband and I are only in Oahu for 4 nights, yet 2 out of our few meals here were at Broken Rice. Why? At the times we went, it was never crowded, and most of all, the food was always delicious. For appetizers we ordered the patê and spring rolls. Patê was quite good with warm sliced baguette, but we would've much preferred an option of banh mi--baguette with patê, a protein (usually pork), and veggies. The spring rolls were crisp and on point. They came with 4 large lettuce leaves, one for each roll to wrap in! Loved that. Also a small portion of yummy rice noodles and sweet vinegar fish sauce to dip in, just perfect. For entrees we ordered the veggie pho, which is normally an afterthought at a lot of U.S. pho places, but we took the chance because other reviewers' pics of it looked amazing. And indeed, it was. Lots of different fully-cooked veggies in a savory, garlicky veggie broth, with an appropriate amount of fresh bean sprouts, basil, and jalapeños on the side to garnish. We also ordered the shaking/shaken beef, which seemed well-marinated with tons of oily, crispy minced garlic. On the side are a few fresh veggies and cup-shaped pile of delicious broken rice. The only improvement I'd like on this dish is more vegetables--it only comes with 2 slices of cucumber and a small pile of cabbage and shredded carrot. For dessert we ordered taro tapioca pudding. Delicious, refreshing end to the meal. For drink we ordered their homemade lemonade. Very good, refreshing and not too sweet. Iced generously like their water, which tastes so good after walking in the Hawaiian heat. I loved the catchy dance music playlist. We both loved the huge canvas pictures of Viet Nam--brought back memories from our trip there last year. The couple who runs the restaurant are nice and attentive. Resto is straight up bomb. Went there 3 times in 1 week. First of all, can't really find Bun Rue (crab soup) at too many places in Honolulu and this place has it on the weekends. The broth is subtle but flavorful and lots of great ingredients. Love it. The pate as an appetizer is great and I love the Broken Rice dish which comes with a pork chop, chicken, and some sides. I got the tofu vegetable rice plate which came with a side salad of lettuce, cucumbers and tomatoes. The flavors were so good and it was surprisingly filling. One thing that I wish they'd had was a sauce for the rice, though I do appreciate that they had vegetarian friendly dishes (no fish sauce). My friends got the bun bo hue, which smelled so good. This was my first visit to Broken Rice and it wont be my last. They're only offering take out. Menu is outside on the glass and you place an order inside and wait outside. I went to pick up some goodies for lunch. Everything was fresh and light and delicious. We had the chicken salad (large and perfectly seasoned), the spring rolls (loved the lettuce, herbs and vermicelli noodles that come with it) and shrimp fried rice (garlicky shrimp was a nice touch to this not-greasy rice dish). Mind-blowing this place is. Just when you think the original pho bowls couldn't get any better... this place comes along and kills it. I'm definitely coming back and trying the other items. Great service and ambiance too. This how nice the waiter and the environment was... our waiter (a nice gentleman) forgot the other items that we ordered. My wife and I talked while waiting for our forgotten orders. I would say, an hour later we asked about our orders and the waiter apologized, got our orders, and brought out our amazing bowls of soup in no time. What the crab!!! Ok, first of all, I will always love Pho Thinh for introducing me to crab soup or bun rieu. But it was a Thursday and I really wanted crab soup. By happenstance I was on IG and saw someone had posted a picture of the crab soup from Broken Rice, which included a crab claw. This left me with only one choice: go to Waialae during the busy lunch rush and pray for parking. I had the foresight to call in my order first. The owner said that they were very busy and that my order wouldn't be ready for about 30-40 minutes. This gave me time to go to Earl's first and order a cool cup of lilikoi lemonade. Refreshing! When I arrived at the restaurant, my order was being packed. The owner mentioned that I could park at curbside next time and they would bring my order out to me. Awesome! Once I got home, I opened up soup. At first glance I thought the portion was kind of small. After adding the toppings, I was surprised to find myself feeling quite full. The soup included real shredded crab meat, a crab claw, and generous portion of their egg/crab mixture. I particularly liked the added flavor of the fried shallots. I will definitely be back for more crab soup and look forward to trying their beef rib pho. read more

Great little mom & pop Vietnamese restaurant in Kaimuki. We tried beef, pork and chicken entrees and they were all tasty. Portion sizes were decent, prices were reasonable, restaurant appeared clean. Service was fast, though it wasn't particularly busy when we went. I liked the lemongrass chicken over vermicelli rice noodles. The chopped romaine lettuce, peanuts, and hint of basil and mint made for a light refreshing meal. Overall definitely worth a try if you are in Kaimuki. My normal go to place for pho is Hale Vietnam and I won't stray again. The price was comparable, but the amount of chicken was about half and the pho broth was smaller as well.
