I'm so excited to share that I got to experience The Broken Yolk Cafe on Saturday, December 16, 2023. I stopped by after weighing in for my Jiu Jitsu tournament just a couple of miles away at Del Mar Fairgrounds. The Original Broken Yolk Cafe started in 1979 in Pacific Beach, San Diego, CA. At the time of this Yelp review, there are 34 locations nationwide with 10 more in development. This Broken Yolk is located in Del Mar, CA. I was so egg-static to finally check this place out because of their phenomenal reviews. I ordered a vanilla latte and for breakfast, I ordered their "Pick Two: Choose any two benedicts and get half of each one." I love this option because it allowed me to try two of my top choices: 1) Golden State Benedict - A toasted English muffin topped with grilled tomato, avocado, applewood-smoked bacon, poached eggs, hollandaise sauce, and a sriracha drizzle. 2) Classic Eggs Benedict - A toasted English muffin topped with Canadian bacon, poached eggs, and hollandaise sauce. If there was a Pick 3 option, I would have picked the Sope Benedict which is fried sopes filled with shredded beef and topped with poached eggs, homemade ranchero sauce, sliced avocado, fresh salsa, cotija cheese and sour cream. My waiter GERARDO also recommended the Sope. Gerardo was so professional, friendly and attentive. I could tell how dedicated and passionate he was about his job. He really took the time to let me know how much he goes out of his way to create memorable experiences for the guests. It was so authentic and genuine! I picked up a to-go order today and had a great experience. The staff acknowledged me even though they were busy with other customers and then took care of me promptly as soon as they could. The presentation for a to-go order was amazing. I got the strawberry and blueberry salad with added chicken,, which had the biggest blueberries I've ever seen, and the nutella crepes with bananas. As the only person who ordered a vegan dish, I enjoyed mine more than the others. Broken Yoke is awesome to be very inclusive of vegan options; lots of dishes can be subbed with plant-based egg and sausage. They charge a hefty 'vegan tax' of ~$4 for the egg and $4.50 for the sausage. Yikes. At $16/entree, that's adding up for a pricier meal than one would expect for a run-of-the-mill breakfast spot. That being said, when I discovered the "Vegan Bowl" which had all of the above with veggies over homefries, my eyes lit up. And sure enough it delivered. The bowl had a great combo of Just Egg, Beyond breakfast sausage, and delicious bell peppers, onions, mushrooms, and spinach. With the potatoes it was extremely filling. I would have ordered without the sriracha as that didnt add as much flavor as the cholula offered on the table. I gave four stars rather than five because 1) other people seemed to treat their dishes like they were pretty pedestrian and 2) my dish was delicious but not a far stretch from something I would have made at home. Finally tried this BYC for breakfast. We had: BORDER BENEDICT (4/5) -- This is a standard order for us for comparing BYCs. It was very good with eggs poached perfectly and tender carne asada, but the corn cake/bread was dry and disappointing. $17.95 HUEVOS RANCHEROS (4/5) -- It's been awhile since I've ordered a BYC Huevos Rancheros, and I was looking forward to this one. The medium eggs were perfect, as was the BYC rancero sauce. I substituted BLACK BEANS (5/5) for the refried beans. I've been to this Broken Yolk very frequently and the service and food has always been good...until today. We were seated in the far corner with a family member we occasionally see, so this moment for us was memorable! Of course it was ruined when our food arrived...with the check! To me that is disrespectful as I feel we are being kicked out...which we were not knowingly. A big family came in (very entitled I might add) and when the rest of their party came in and asked why they only had about 10 seats for a party of about 15-18 they gestured towards us and said "we are waiting for them to leave". I'm sorry, I do not like that I am being rushed to leave and that the servers and waitresses at the front promised them our table when we are a paying customer as well. We were traveling from out of state and decided to stop for breakfast at this restaurant as it was on the way to our hotel. We picked it because it had 4.5 stars which indicated pretty great reviews and the menu seemed pretty appealing and appetizing. As we entered on first glance the restaurant was clean, quaint and the service was prompt. However, unfortunately the food left A LOT to be desired. My husband ordered one of the skillets and it looked like soup. Potatoes were overcooked, huge chunks of the veggies not diced well and just an overall lack of flavor. I ordered an omelette and that wasn't appetizing either. The turkey meat was dry, no salt, pepper or other seasonings, it just tasted like chunks of onions and peppers as if the omelette was prepared together like a sandwich. My boyfriend, puppy, and I came into San Diego on Saturday 3/11 morning for a close friend's daughter's Baptism. We unfortunately missed the Baptism but were early for the after party so we decided to stop by a CVS to get the final touches for the present we had for them. My boyfriend and I were so taken by her incredible customer service! Our waiter's name was Gerardo! He had this smile on his face and a great energy, he walked over to our table and greeted us. I definitely agreed and was eager to try it! We got another round of drinks while we watched our puppy socialize with other diners in the patio. The meal overall was incredible! We both enjoyed our plates, I was the perfect in between from being happily full but not food coma stuffed! ATMOSPHERE: I like the comfortable and casual vibe of Broken Yolk. It's clean and well-maintained, but also warm and cozy. SERVICE: I've been here countless times and I have never had a single bad experience with the service. Everyone here is so kind, friendly, professional, warm, and attentive. I have to particularly mention Gerado, who has waited on us numerous times and is truly first rate. He is extraordinary. I hadn't intended on leaving a review this morning, however after our server, Bianca, offered us a 10% discount for leaving a 5 star review I felt compelled to at least check out the recent reviews for this location. Imagine my shock when I discovered that the last month is full of 5 star reviews praising how well the service Bianca provided. So, here I am, sharing my honest experience because clearly the latest reviews for this location have been bought. Broken yolk is one of my favorite breakfast chains. So this morning when I found myself looking for something to eat, the nearby broken yolk was an easy choice. It wasn't busy this Saturday morning, which is generally surprising for a higher quality breakfast location. However I was not deterred and was quickly sat at a booth by the window. The ambiance of the location is pleasant with a light Del Mar racetrack theme with news on in the morning to update me on current events. I ordered a coffee and a Monte Cristo. Just an average black coffee that you're likely to find in an office break room. The Monte Cristo (pictured) was decent for a non French restaurant, it definitely isn't anything to write home about. Overall, the food was pleasant and it was contributing to a fine morning I was having. Overall, I'd say it was an average breakfast experience that quickly turned into a 1 star experience. My server, Bianca, when bringing the check asks if I have yelp, I respond 'yes' thinking she will ask us to review our experience we had today. However, instead, Bianca tells us (after apologizing for being shy) that if I left a 5 STAR REVIEW (because apparently this is the only location that doesn't) she would give a 10% DISCOUNT on my meal. I was taken aback, I've heard that people buy reviews on yelp but I've never heard of restaurants offering discounts to customers for leaving a 5 star review before they leave. That's not only extremely disingenuous but it's just straight up rude to come up to someone after they have just finished eating to leave a 5 star review to a breakfast experience that isn't even finished yet.
