Mediocre, at best. Broken Yolk is serving up some solid 2-star cuisine. I'm bumping them to 3 just because service is pretty good all the way through, from hostess to server to busser. But I'm excluding those cooks. Those cooks did me wrong! Maybe I'm getting ahead of myself though. Perhaps I'm blaming the cooks for Broken Yolk's broken recipes. Long story short... NO. The flavors just aren't there at all. Take a gander at Yelper Maddie M's review - she ain't lying! The coffee here is THAT lacking. This was my first experience at the restaurant, and though I have several local breakfast favorites, I thought to give this place a try due to their never ending stream of mailer coupons. But $30 and an unsatisfied-tummy later, I realized I made a bad move. From the sounds of this morning's waiting room, several groups were first-time visitors too. The weekend wait is the pits, but thank goodness for a mostly cordial and calm staff. Our wait was about a half hour or so. There is a sizable room within that can hold a few dozen people. Not sure why that space isn't used for seating, but it may add an additional strain on the kitchen. Anyway, expect a bit of a wait. Food is tasty, and servings are sizable. I've also been to the Eastlake location, and actually prefer that one. The seating is more comfortable, and the space has a lovely brightness that this one doesn't seem to carry. But service here was friendly and swift. I most enjoy the Benedicts -- the Golden State is my favorite. I guess I am a bit of a traditionalist. Others offer spinach, roasted turkey and carne asada. But the Golden State -- which comes on an English muffin with avocado, grilled tomato and bacon -- is my preference. But there is the traditional-traditional Benedict, also, with ham. Mimosas are a bit steep in price, but seem worth it. I couldn't finish mine. And don't forget the Yelp check in -- you get 15% off. Bonus! That nearly took care of the cost of one mimosa. read more

Came here for a late brunch on a Saturday. The wait was only a few minutes and we were seated outside. All the employees were wearing masks and they are sanitizing between guests. The food came quickly and was pretty good. I got the waffle sandwich, which gave me both sweet and savory for my breakfast, which I love. The home fries were bomb. The eggs left something to be desired--I'm not sure that they were real. A little rubbery. Husband got an omelet, and said it was "meh"--3/5. Good, quick and attentive service. We had a party of 9 on a Saturday morning and celebrated 2 birthdays. I had doubts about getting in without a long wait with a large group, but my phone call talking to wonderful manager Tarissa regarding the best way to get on the wait list given the size of our party put me at ease. Tarissa provided excellent customer service and when we arrived we were seated quickly and in a perfect spot. All the staff was great, including the manager who came by the table and introduced herself. Also a special shout out to our server John T. who greeted us with a smile and went above and beyond and dealt with a few questions regarding special diet restrictions as well as the kid's needs. He is a gem! The coffee and waters were refilled promptly, and everyone was happy with their food which was served quickly! It's been a long time since I have been to this Oceanside location. the kid's (JULIANA's 7 and WYATT's 5) are out of school this week so the family voted to take advantage of the rare weekday opportunity to go out for breakfast together. BEACH BREAK was a forty-five minute wait so we settled on the newly opened BROKEN YOKE CAFE just south of TRADER JOE's on VISTA WAY in OCEANSIDE. the hostess told us twenty minutes and we were seated in four or five. very extensive menu. the apple juice the kid's ordered was unfiltered (not that one step away from cider vinegar most places serve) so we got off to a great start. WYATT ordered the kid's EGGS and BACON and got a huge pile of eggs (i am guessing at least three) and three pieces of toast so be aware of the portions. everything was cooked perfectly and, though he only had one bite of toast, WYATT ate all the bacon (both pieces) and an astounding volume of the fluffy yellow devils. JULIANA had the kid's PANCAKES and FRESH FRUIT -- everything looked tasty but she was too busy texting her other brothers to actually eat much (insert scowling-faced father icon). mom had the HAM QUICHE which came with a BLUEBERRY MUFFIN and hash browns. i had a bite and hers was pretty good too. i ordered the SPINACH SALAD (trying to get started a little early on my NEW YEAR's resolutions) which was supposed to come with hard boiled eggs (we have chickens so they weren't really missed) but eggs were conspicuously absent. i asked for the dressing on the side (i had HONEY MUSTARD instead of the ITALIAN on the menu) and it came in an oversized (and over filled) gravy boat -- i consumed about a teaspoon -- that had to be hard on the old food costs. anyway, pretty A-OK. kind of a DENNY's but a bit more upscale. read more

This place is pretty much would you'd think; it's a cookie cutter diner that serves breakfast food that you'd typically see at Denny's or Coco's. It's better here, but not by much, basically at that hint above average mark. The best way to think of this place, and every place that has three stars, is that if you see something on the menu that you know you like elsewhere, this place won't steer you too far wrong. And if you see something that you've never really wanted to try anywhere else, it's doubtful that it will change your mind once you have it on your plate. I've been here about half a dozen times, had Eggs Benedict, Breakfast Burritos, Pancakes, Spinach and Egg White Omelette ,and various muffins and the like. If it had sugar or fat in it, it wasn't bad. If it came without either, I'd finish it, but not be entranced. And, don't get me wrong, I'm sure I'll be back, but this isn't the kind of place you plan on coming with your family. It's more of a compromise when friends are in town or with groups that need a place that too many won't complain about. I've never had problems with the staff, the food always comes out promptly, everything is well cooked, and rare is the occasion to complain. I have mixed feeling about this place and I think it is mostly because it isn't a small family run business which is what I am used to for breakfast or brunch in O-side. The place is huge. That is the first thing that I noticed. They have a huge party room and outside seating PLUS a normal size dining area. At least they have a parking lot that could accommodate a full house All that is fine if the food and service were dynamite but its really just average. Their coffee is decent the food is decent (lots of choices BIG menu) and the servers are nice but do not come around a lot. Overall if you want a place where you will get decent food and want to sit around for a while and kick it without having to worry about giving up your table to the people waiting I would suggest this place. read more

I haven't been here in years! Decided to come today when the first 2 places my boyfriend and I went to were packed, we called ahead of time and asked how long the wait was. We were told 15 minutes so we decided to drive over. When we arrived we were told the wait is 20 minutes, we decided to wait. It felt way longer than 20 minutes. My boyfriend and I both ordered the chicken fried steak and eggs. It was very good! No complaints on the food or service it was all great! We were both impressed that they didn't get our order wrong because I asked for gravy on my steak and extra gravy and my boyfriend ordered gravy on the side. For a very busy place it was awesome they got everything correct. Even a mom and pop shop has messed up our orders before. The service was pretty good except they were slow with preparing the food and when the food came out it was cold. However since my ophthalmologist is in the same shopping center, hadn't had breakfast yet, and was starving, I chose convenience. The coffee lacked so badly, I thought well since I came later after breakfast rush hour, maybe it was sitting out for some time. Our waiter came to the table and I asked if he could make a fresh pot of coffee, but unfortunately when he brought out new cups out, the coffee was still horrendous. We ordered a Veggie Omelette and short stack of Pancakes with a side of bacon. A different friendly person brought out our food, and normally when you're starving you'll eat about anything. However it was so difficult to stomach this. Overall everything lacked FLAVOR! Not hard to add some garlic or seasonings to boost up the edible factor, but this was literally the most bland meal I had in a while. Added salt and pepper. Nope! Added ketchup. Nope! Added Tabasco. NOPE!! How can you mess up potatoes? By adding no flavor!! Sorry but you know your food sucks if hot sauce can't save it. What was also equally disappointing was how much it cost. Normally if you pay $5 for a plate full of food, you can't be too picky if it doesn't have any flavor, but for $35 for two people, eating only a few bites of our food, left all of coffee in our cups, I can say it definitely wasn't worth it. read more

My family and I always enjoy our visits to Broken Yolk. The food and service are excellent. Staff is always friendly and do a great job. If someone who hasn't been before drove by and saw the many people outside waiting I would tell them it's well worth the wait and it isn't that long. The staff are always quick and efficient. My most recent was within the past week with our daughter. I wanted to reward her with a nice breakfast before school for how well she's been doing in school/soccer. Craig was our waiter that day and did a great job of getting our orders quickly and allowing us to enjoy them before school started.
