We were visiting a friend in Brooklyn when she decided to take us to Brooklyn crab. The outside is extremely eclectic, and definitely looks out of place in Brooklyn. It reminds me of something you'd find in South Carolina or Florida. There's an outdoor bar, some outdoor games (cornhole, etc), and then an inside and upstairs with retractable windows. This place was poppin for a Sunday afternoon! We were a party of 6, and the service was pretty smooth. They have a ton of communal hot sauces, and a big roll of paper towels for you on the table. I ordered the fried shrimp, my boyfriend had the blue crab roll, and we split the jalapeño corn bread. Being from Monmouth County, NJ, we eat seafood often in the summer, and I have to say, the fried shrimp was probably the best I've had in a long time, my boyfriend agreed. The fries were delicious, the corn bread was different and tasty. His blue crab roll was overflowing with meet. Everyone at our table seemed to like their orders as well. Overall, when we split the check, for 2 entrees, a side and two drinks it came to $85 per couple. Being in New York it seemed pretty reasonable to me! For atmosphere on a warm, sunny day, they get five stars. The only reason you'd come here over nearby, better restaurants is to sit upstairs and look out on the water with a few cocktails. The three story set up can't be beat on warmer days. I knew the food was just ok so I ordered the oysters. They were having a $1 special, so well worth it. The pricey watermelon cocktail was sort of watery and not memorable. (Stick to cheaper beer here. No special bartenders) Also ordered the crab roll which was just ok. Ordered Steve's key lime pie because he was closed that day and we had taken the ferry over for a pie and the winery next door. Food: 7/10 Service: 5/10 Atmosphere: 7/10 A little off the beaten path, at Brooklyn Crab, with its beachy vibe, you kind of forget that Manhattan is less than 5 miles away. It's a great spot to get some simple seafood and a bit of a reprieve from the busier, more hectic areas of NYC. My wife and I went a little later in the evening this past spring, and while the restaurant was busy, the volume alone didn't seem to account for the service chaos (lot's of runners all over the place auctioning off food, often to the wrong tables). That said, while we had to wait a while for everything, the basics (water glass filled) were mostly taken care of. In terms of food, the mussels appetizer gives a good quantity for the money, but is also a pretty standard, forgettable preparation. Naturally, the main event is steamed crab legs, which are definitely done well, if also in forgettable fashion. In all, Brooklyn Crab is a pretty solid option for some basic seafood satisfaction, but don't go expecting to have your mind blown. read more

Beware of spoiled seafood at Brooklyn Crab. We were served several orders of spoiled seafood. The shrimp dish was not fresh. The mussel dish was not fresh and smelt bad. We were served grayish green colored, spoiled Dungeness crab- it was definitely spoiled because it smelled like ammonia. I put a small piece in my mouth but once i smelled and tasted it was rotten, I immediately spat it out. Ammonia in seafood is caused by the chemical breakdown of the bacteria on dead fish and seafood tissue. If spoiled seafood is ingested, it can cause severe food poisoning. There are people who bring their children here- imagine if they get poisoned from this rotten food?? We told the manager and he said "i never heard of seafood tasting like ammonia" - which is absurd because if you manage a seafood restaurant you should know that rotting fish smell and know that it causes food poisoning if eaten!!! We asked the manager to remove all the spoiled dishes off of our tab and he did. Our server was really apologetic and professional. However, I would never come back here again and risk my health and safety. Upon leaving we saw that the table next to us had greenish-gray colored lobster meat. I assume their order was rotten too! I am honestly shocked that establishments like this can stay in business serving people rotten food. Serving rotten poisonous food to patrons should be illegal. The restrooms are also filthy. The NY Department of Health needs to come inspect this place immediately. read more

Wowza! I wasn't expecting such a place in Brooklyn. Brooklyn Crab is your Maine-inspired seafood shack with all things sea infused. The location of this place is not the best and is quite random to be honest. Besides the location...I came here on a Sunday with a group of 10, on a day that was 65 and sunny with blue skies. We got there at open around 11:30 am. We were lucky to get a table outside with a view of the water. There is a lot of outdoor seating. We were surrounded by other diners by 12:00. Ok so first, the drink menu. Mojjto, frozen margaritas, pina coladas. All those types that will make you feel like you're on an island. The pina colada was so delicious. Others ordered beer buckets for the table, 5 beers that are brought to the table submerged in an ice filled tin bucket. The food! I had the blue crab roll which was $24. It was small for the price but I didn't expect cheap because we're in NY. Others had the king crab roll, lobster, and a brave soul at our table got the full steamer bowl for $50 or $60 which has a variety of fish. It came with a mallet and bib, just like in Maine. The crab rolls come with a side of wavy potato chips. The fries that we ordered on the side were very good. After drinks we went to the lower level where there is cornhole and another bar. It was cold when we came but outdoors they have a mini golf area where u can drink and play while waiting for ur table. They dont take rsvps. Thankfully we got here early around 7ish on a friday evening and it wasnt packed. We were seated immediately and our waitress was such a sweetheart throughout the time we dined there. Bathrooms and space looked clean. Diff types of hot sauces throughout the seating area and awesome decor all around (pictures, signs, fishing/crabbing materials, etc). We ordered the oysters, chowder soup, mushrooms w polenta, lobster mac n cheese, mussels in white sauce, a combo for 2, also shrimp and fries basket. Everything was so good. I highly recommend the combo for 2, it comes w a whole lobster, crabs and i think king or snow crabs (i honestly dont know the difference lol but it was definitely a great amt of seafood to share!) I brought my wife + kids here for Mother's Day. We had been here once before and I had more positive memories of it - I'm not sure whether the restaurant (and its prices) changed or if my memory was just inaccurate. What I can say is that we won't be headed back. The prices are in many cases astronomical for what is so-so food and, at least on our visit, subpar service. $20+ for a burger for our son with nothing on it and what appear to be frozen french fries. $23 for fish + chips with two smallish fish fillets and, again, a big basket of ok fries. Cocktail prices are standard but they're mixed pretty sugary and low-alcohol. In terms of service, there were a lot of staff members around, the top floor was only half full, and yet service was not attentive. My drink came relatively quickly but my wife's took 15 minutes or more - this being Mother's Day, I was sitting there awkwardly waiting for her well-earned drink before I started mine. We ordered the kids two Shirley Temples and they restaurant seemed to forget about them until I inquired 10+ minutes later. They were also out of the salmon (my daughter's pick) which seemed surprising for a seafood restaurant on the weekend, and then they brought her the clam chowder instead of the crab chowder that she ordered. Maybe the server was new, but we didn't really get any acknowledgement of the issues and definitely did not get any token discount off of our final $230 bill. In summary: The views from the upper level are lovely, the vibe on a crowded summer day (during non-COVID times) is fun, some of the seafood dishes (like the crab) are pricey but well executed... but our overall feeling was that we had just paid way too much at a tourist-oriented place that didn't really care about our experience, just our dollars. My mother-in-law has an expression for places like this: "The food's free, you're paying for the view." Well, yes and no. Brooklyn Crab is done up in high style, like some insane fever dream of a Maryland shore crab shack -- albeit one with mini golf in the back. Happily, the wait wasn't long on this Sunday night, though the place was packed -- they took my cell number when we got there, told us it'd be 30 minutes max, and it wound up being closer to 10. Seated upstairs, my friend and I ordered the PEI mussels to start along with bowls of New England clam chowder. The latter was tasty and filling, not too thin, but not too thick either, with just enough clams and potatoes. The mussels were fine -- not as fat and juicy as I'd hoped, but the broth under them was buttery and delicious, and made me wish we'd been given a more generous helping of bread. Our main course was a pair of crab rolls, and while my dining companion had few qualms, I found my roll to be a bit on the dry side. I don't like a ton of mayo on my seafood rolls, but I do expect some salady moistness, and this didn't cut the mustard. Bay seasoning, sure, plenty of that, but neither the crab nor the roll were compelling. All told, our meal (with beers) came to around $90. Not cheap, not unexpected. Service was fine if not particularly attentive. But then, you're not really paying for the service, or the food either. Brooklyn Crab overlooks Fairway and its voluminous parking lot, with glimpses of the water beyond. Which is probably just as well. If the place was any closer to the water, I reckon they'd jack the prices up even further. And, expectations raised, I'd likely be giving Brooklyn Crab one less star. read more

The atmosphere here is very casual and friendly. This is the perfect place for a group of friends to enjoy great views and amazing seafood!!! We had such a great experience! Brooklyn Crab had such an awesome vibe! I don't even know where to start!!! So I'll give you a mini-tour! As soon as you walk up to the spot there is a bar to the right and to the left an area to sit, eat, drink, and play games! In the backyard is Mini Golf, a HUGE seating area, and another bar!! On the second floor they have another bar, and an awesome view outdoor seating area looking out into Brooklyn (which is where we sat =) And on the Third floor they have an indoor seating area with that same awesome view into brooklyn from a higher point. The entire place was just so chill and social, the staff was super friendly and helpful, they gave off a very family vibe. The FOOD and the DRINKS OMG!!! SOOOOOO good!! Came her during happy day ( monday & tuesday ) which means the oysters are $1. My boyfriend likes their oysters more then mermaid inn. I had been looking forward to taking a short day trip to Red Hook to try the seafood and drinks at Brooklyn Crab. While the trip to Red Hook from Manhattan on the water taxi didn't disappoint, unfortunately Brooklyn Crab did. The place was packed on a Saturday afternoon, and I honestly am not sure why. Removed from the water, the restaurant is off a dirty street and doesn't enjoy any views of the beautiful waterfront (in my opinion Red Hook's main draw). The front has a few bocce courts, but they are overcrowded with people. In back there is mini golf, but it seems mainly targeted at children (so maybe good if you have kids). On the roof is the restaurant area, but if you want to eat be prepared to wait at least 45 minutes to an hour. We were not prepared to wait that long and decided to leave after drinks. But the food did not look so appealing and the prices are shockingly high ($42 for a lobster). Definitely not worth a trip to Red Hook, and if you are in the area there seem to be a lot better options within walking distance for better prices and with shorter waits. read more

Went here for my Birthday as well and it was really good vibes. They served A LOT of food and we all got full so easily. We ordered PEI mussels, cocktail shrimp and calamari for starters. That was so so good. Then I got the shrimp basket with the mac and cheese. It was A LOT. I should've shared the Mac and cheese with my friend but we did that thing where we let our stomachs talk. But it made for amazing leftovers the next day. Their drinks were really good, I had the frozen piña colada and watermelon margarita. Very appropriate for summer. It's a huge place that takes in huge parties. I don't think you can reserve seats, I believe it's first come first serve. And they were very accommodating to me and my party. We had a dozen people celebrating a birthday. We waited 90ish minutes on a busy Sunday. No worries. Once we were seated, two people had to leave early and two late people took their place. The manager came over and said we weren't allowed to do that and they needed the table. It was incredibly rude. We had just ordered our food so it wasn't like we were sticking around past our time. We were on their schedule. Another manager huffed and puffed over us as soon as a few people were done with their food. It sucked to be treated this way. We spent a TON of money. This is not the way to treat customers. The food itself was good but not great. I thought it was a little pricey compared to other notable, laid back seafood places in Brooklyn. This has got to be one of my favorite places to eat, but sadly, they won't take my 14-16 person reservation for my Birthday. :( :( :( :( :( So, I figured I would take my chances and arrive an hour early to get a couple of tables put together. Sadly, these people will not even put you on a list when you get there, and you are telling them that on this rainy, cool summer evening, that they will not accommodate you in any way, even when you are bringing 14 people. They would not even set up the tables until EVERYONE had arrived. They would not take orders until EVERYONE had arrived. It's just effing weird. Are they in NYC or on Mars? WTF is going on with that? This is very poor management. I did have a good time after all the annoying coordination finally was over, and my guests were miffed. I must say that our server, Chris, was excellent, always positive and always trying to get everything just right. You'll be happy if you get him as a server!! The mussels which I raved about in my previous review are not the same anymore, it was more of a weird brown garlicky sauce. The chef has definitely changed. The potatoes came whole (not in wedges). My friends and I made it to Brooklyn Crab after running a 5K at the Red Hook Track. We didn't do any research on food prior so we were lucky to run into the restaurant. There were other restaurants in the neighborhood but this was the only place where there were enough seatings for all of us (we were a group of around ten people). I got the blue crab roll and it was quite delicious! It is very similar to lobster rolls except it's crab meat. My friends were eating snow crab rolls and they looked yummy as well. I thought about getting the frozen margarita like my friends did, but I don't do well with alcohol when I'm dehydrated after I race, so I didn't get one. But that also looked good, so if you have an ok tolerance with alcohol, I say go for it. The outdoor seating area is huge and restaurant's got a great summer vibe. It gets super busy around the brunch hour on weekends (we saw people waiting to enter by the time we left) and sometimes it's hard to get the attention of the waiters. read more

The atmosphere is super quirky and fun. It's like a double decker overlooking the harbor. The decor is somewhat kitschy but not in a bad way. Spoiler alert: don't come for the food. I was hoping to support one of my favorite restaurants in Brooklyn during the pandemic since I believe it's so important. Two weeks ago I stopped by for a table, and the front of the house hostess was not very pleasant. It was busy anyway so we decided to pass and return. Tonight we returned and very nicely and politely asked how long the wait was for an upstairs table by the edge. We were told an hour (totally fine), but then we were given such an attitude by the hostess, who couldn't act more impatient (meanwhile there was no line). I'm sad because I loved this restaurant but they seem to be taking their patrons for granted, which is odd during this time. Hope the can get their front of their staff in order because it's probably going to cost them business. Sad to say but I probably won't be coming back for a while :-( read more

Keep in mind there were other groups ordering less than us. We ordered oysters (which actually is more than the crab options) but I guess $33 over $25 is tough math. We added calamari, shrimp and fish and chips and 3 beers 1 lemonade (obviously none of the oysters and beer for the wifey). Kept a menu to order more. They didn't really warn us beforehand and afterwards probably wasn't considerate at all. We went upstairs (also my wife is pregnant) and made her walk up and down the stairs without consideration.
