    Lobster Roll
    Stacie J.

2nd timer alert! First time via DoorDash and 2nd time dining in. Came across Brown Bag Seafood via DoorDash because I was craving a lobster roll and BBS was highly reviewed so gave it a try. The lobster roll was very simple...toasted buttered bread, poached lobster, and warm butter; exactly how I like it! It comes with a side so of course I chose crispy tater tots. The packaging was very secure for delivery and food arrived fairly warm (can't fight Chicago cold weather). For the price point I was expecting the roll to be overstuffed with lobster; however, it was pretty good! A week or so later I went to dine in and ordered the chili ginger salmon sandwich, fries, and gingerade vodka drink. The sandwich was just ok (didn't have the seasoning I was expecting) and the gingerade drink was very watered down (not worth the purchase). What I will say is the inside is decorated like you're at a beach themed restaurant (very nice) and the cashier/server was very friendly and helped by providing recommendations. Best part is receiving the Swedish gummy candy!

    Salmon - Large

I've walked past Brown Bag Seafood countless times and finally decided to grab dinner from there the other night. My order was ready in about 15 minutes, and the pickup process was super easy. The space inside is surprisingly large, with plenty of seating and a nice, welcoming atmosphere. I ordered the large Power Box with salmon and a side of buffalo bleu tots. The salmon was really good--flavorful, well-cooked, and paired with a citrusy aioli-style sauce. The quinoa base added a nice, hearty touch, which I assume is what makes it a "Power Box" compared to other options. The buffalo bleu tots were also great--crispy, flavorful, and a solid side choice. No complaints about the food itself; it was fresh, healthy, and tasted fantastic. My only gripe is the portion sizes for the price. The "large" salmon plate was over $20 but wasn't particularly big, and the tots, while reasonably priced at $4, came in a tiny coffee cup. Overall, I'd definitely eat here again--the food was delicious and a great healthy option. Just be prepared for slightly higher prices for what you get!

Lobster roll, truffle tots, clam chowder

Great food. The truffle tots with the ranch sauce was my favorite. We also got the lobster roll and clam chowder. I want to try the fish tacos and the chili crisp tots next time! The place has a great vibe and we hung out for a while. The staff was super friendly and helpful!

I really wanted this place to be good, but alas it is not. Let's start with the good, the service was friendly and efficient. But then everything else was subpar. I got the salmon and fresh catch bowls with quinoa and veggies. While the fish portion was adequate, the whole thing was quite small. The quinoa was a ball of overcooked mush and the veggies were cooked to the point of sogginess. The seasoning and the sauce station was quite boring: there was a thousand island style sauce, a tartar sauce and a Tabasco type one. Just too bland to come back.

You won't have judge this review by the stars! I've waited to post this one, I'm trying a new policy - if you aren't good enough to visit twice, you may not be worth writing about! I've visited Brown Bag Seafood three times, and the third time was a charm. On this occasion it was for lunch, on a beautiful sunshiny day in Chicago (the temperature dropped 20 degrees that evening). Inside there were only a few patrons, as I approached the counter to order, I was kindly greeted by a young Sister at the register. After the warm greeting, at my request she thoroughly explained the available menu items. The pleasantry made me focus on the high level of communication between the workers (all young, all Black), and how they extended this to all the customers that followed me. I chose to sit outside under the cloudless sky. The waiter informed me to take a table number and that my meal would be out soon. Seated on a bench, under an umbrella sufficiently blocking the bright Sun, I watched a few pigeons searching for food, and experienced the irritating sounds of the city (yeah, I intelligently set under an above ground subway path - duh!) - within five minutes my food arrived. It didn't just arrive, the customer service exhibited indoors was extended to the outdoor seating too. The young man (waiter, Black, appeared to be under 25) gave me my order and said "enjoy your meal and let me know if you need anything." I immediately told him I left my drink inside, he swiftly retrieve it and gave it to me. Upon finishing my meal, I returned inside and asked a third server if I could get another tea. She walked me over to the cups, and gave me a top and straw. After this experience, I asked if the manager was available? A Sister maybe in her late 30's (you know it's hard to tell our age) came out and introduced herself; I went on to complement her staff's customer service and personalism. In return, she asked me to say a good word about them on social media. I must add, she didn't in anyway seem surprised by her staffs acumen (little word, big meaning). Most impressively, this experience has been consistent each time I've visited. I almost forgot this is a restaurant review and I have to say something about the food - scrumptious - I'll say less and allow the photos to speak for me. In final, I suggest you seriously consider "brown bagging" your next meal at this Chitown seafood restaurant.

The service was amazing. We had this great server named Brandon and he was very kind as well as attentative. The food was delicious, would absolutely recommend.

I found a long strand of hair on the salmon I ordered. It's disappointing that the workers aren't covering their hair while preparing food.

But standard is the best word I can think of. Shareable portion, which is a plus. Service was excellent. The server was friendly and personable. It opened as a…read morepartnership between Miami Beach's iconic Joe's Stone Crab and Lettuce Entertain You, bringing South Florida to Grand and Rush. I first went when it was still a huge, buzzy Chicago spot, and one of my most memorable dinners came after my high school graduation in 2003. I even got a speeding ticket on Lake Shore Drive with my grandmother in the back seat on the way to dinner, which still makes me laugh. Chicago was an especially fun place for Joe's to arrive. Open outcry trading was still a force, and the wealth creation around it was wild: people who had dropped out of high school could become millionaires in their twenties, while math PhDs from the University of Chicago could make fortunes in the same ecosystem. It was a golden era for hustle culture, when commerce idolized Tony Montana in a way that today is more likely to idolize Jamie Dimon or David Solomon. Death Row and Bad Boy ruled the airwaves, while Michael, Shaq, Kobe, and Allen Iverson defined the NBA. Basketball was so dominant in Chicago culture during my coming of age that I still map other things, including restaurants, to NBA teams. Joe's felt like the Miami Heat coming to Chicago in much the same way Smith & Wollensky represented the New York Knicks: each brought a recognizable piece of its hometown culture into another major city. Joe's brought real South Florida sizzle to Chicago, and it landed at exactly the right moment. Going there felt like an occasion. Florida took longer for me to understand in full. My family has roots in the state going back decades, farther north along the Atlantic coast, and I didn't visit Miami until March 2007, when my sister started graduate school in Coral Gables. That trip began my love affair with Miami and helped me understand why the original Joe's was such an institution. A close family friend's father spent time around Miami in the 1960s and 1970s. He knew local fishermen who caught stone crabs, which gave me an appreciation for the older South Florida culture around the food, separate from Joe's own history. Another Joe's memory captures an entirely different moment. Looking through my OpenTable history, my July 31, 2008 reservation at Joe's in Chicago is the earliest reservation I can find at a restaurant that is still open today. I was 23, working at UBS, preparing to move to New York while the firm was already on fire from its mortgage losses, and Lehman would file for bankruptcy just weeks later. I was broke but wildly aspirational, dreaming about dinners at Balthazar, begging my way past the doors at Cain and Tenjune, hoping to drink for free, and trying to meet women comically far out of my league. Through all of those memories, the restaurant itself has been remarkably consistent. The stone crab claws are incredible, the seafood is excellent, and Joe's holds its own among Chicago's serious steakhouses. The room has traditionally felt a little more formal than Miami, with bow ties, polished service, and a darker old-school steakhouse rhythm, while still being genuinely welcoming. Finish with the key lime pie. Years later, my wife and I held our wedding reception at RPM Seafood, another Lettuce restaurant, then ate at the original Joe's during our honeymoon in Miami during COVID days later, which felt like a fitting circle back. In sheer range of venues, repeatability of quality and atmosphere, and consistency of hits, Lettuce is the gold standard in Chicago, with some of that same reach in Vegas and DC. I've been extraordinarily privileged in my exposure to hospitality, and I still repeatedly admire Rich Melman's model, taste, and execution, now carried forward by the next generation of the family. Joe's is a prime example: world-class, durable, unmistakably Chicago, and absolutely somewhere I want to return next time I'm in town with some dough to spend. While Joe's may not be French, this place still earns my highest marks: très bien!

After I summoned him back, we ordered a couple of Stellas, a Filet Slider and Baked Goat Cheese; each item was $5 on the HH menu. A few minutes later, Hubs waved over our server again to order 4 oysters, which were BOGO during HH. Upon her suggestion, he chose the smaller East Coast oysters. He told me they were really good and he was happy with his choice. I had two good bites of the filet slider & was delighted at how delicious it was. The piece of meat was quite large, especially for $5! Thick & juicy, it was cooked perfectly medium rare. The slider was plated with lots of crispy string fries that were very tasty. Our other app, the baked goat cheese, was served atop a skillet of tomato sauce with four pieces of toasted bread. This was also a delicious plate. Service was very on-point, and we never felt rushed, even after Happy Hour ended. At some point, the pianist arrived & we enjoyed a rousing selection of yacht rock tunes as we finished our beers.
