We just happened to walk by Brown Butter Cookies while waiting for our dinner reservation down the street. We went in and saw that you could sample EVERYTHING. What? How cool! So we tried many of the cookies, not all of them, but at least half. So awesome that they just give samples away and don't even pressure you to buy anything. We ended up purchasing their original brown butter cookies, which are salty and delicious and wonderful. My husband also loved their honey cookies, so we bought some of those as well. Delicious shortbread cookies that are crisp yet melt in your mouth. They offer both regular and gluten free. I must say the gluten free is one of the best I've ever eaten. After finding two of these little gems in our hotel room, we popped in as we walked around the square in Paso Robles. While the cookies are good, the service in this little shop was just sad. C'mon you work in a cookie store, be happy. The girl working in the late afternoon was just bothered that we were there. She gave us a sample of one of their flavors and we didn't like it as much as the chocolate that we had in our room. The store name itself was enough to convince me that this place had something wonderful to offer. I love their original and almond flavored cookies. But my favorite is their 'Granola'. They're packed in 1lb bags, which I could easily consune in one seating, if not for the concern of the extra calorie intake. Each bag is filled with crunchy, nutty and aromatic pieces of roasted rolled past with pecan, coconut, raisins, almonds. Every bite is an explosion of honey roasted flavor complemented by the aromatic flavor of the oats, nuts and coconut. I usually don't buy anything with raisins on it. Cause I hate raisins! We saw this place in downtown Paso Robles while walking around town. It seemed more like a tourist destination, we decided to check out what the hype was all about. The young man behind the counter was friendly and offered us some bite-sized samples. When he asked which ones we would like since we didn't know what this cookie company was about, he was more than willing to offer us five different types of cookies. The ladies' attitudes in the store are what ruined the experience being that it was our first time. The lady handling the samples seemed stingy, she seemed like she did not want to give us the cookies to try. Another lady arranging the cookies in the store had somewhat of an attitude like "are you going to buy or not?" When we finally decided to buy a 6-pack of their honey cookies, two of their big cookies- a snicker doodle and an oatmeal, the cashier lady rudely and quickly rung us up - no "thank you" or anything. There are different kinds of packaged cookies in the store , like other reviewers said, not fresh out of the oven, pricey for underwhelming cookies. The cookies were overly salty, all them have sea salt--not recommended for those sensitive to salt. The oatmeal and snicker doodle cookies were dry, I think from sitting too long in the open air. I wouldn't purchase these cookies again based on this experience alone. I gave them two stars only because the of nice young man who cared enough to bag our cookies nicely at the end. read more

Love that they give you samples to try. Quaint storefront and pleasant employees. We bought the original flavor and the cocoa flavor and split the packs and mailed some to our friend who recommended it, and it travels well too! Subtly salty which balances well with the sweetness, and not so buttery that it becomes overpowering. It is on the pricey side, but I think a worthwhile indulgence if you enjoy shortbread type cookies. we will have to try out the other flavors next time we are up in the Central Coast! read more

Pop Quiz: Do you like crumbly cookies? Do you like brown butter? Do you like sea salt? Answers: Yes, yes, and yes means you'll really like these cookies. If you answer no to any of these questions, you'll probably have a problem with this place because they only sell one thing - brown butter cookies with sea salt. The most basic cookie was the best. There are variations on the base dough, but adding flavors didn't help. In fact, the stronger the added flavor, the worse the cookie became. For example, the mild cocoa version was better than the bold espresso variety. Don't judge the cookies on the aroma because they smelled slightly like rancid butter. The spice cookie smelled like gastro-intestinal acid. Thankfully, they didn't taste like that. Although good with wine, they were best with dark rum. I feel the pain of those who complain about the price. This place was more expensive than Momofuku Milk Bar which pays high New York City rent and has the acclaim of a James Beard-winning pastry chef. Brown Butter can't justify its prices with those excuses which makes me wonder why it is priced so high. read more

They only have a few flavors and one style of cookie (shortbread). The flavor is fabulous. We got the original and cinnamon. I think what was disappointing was how pricey it was. I think there were either 6 or 8 small cookies to a pack...basically not enough for two adults and a small child. We got two packs and spent almost $30. Are the cookies good? Definitely! Brown Butter Cookie Company was literally around the corner from where we parked. Kismet, I know! Upon waking inside not only are you greeted by a delicious cookie scent but also by the young lady behind the counter offering samples of their Original flavored Cookie. It was hard for me but I passed only because I was still scoping out the place. That's when I saw it. Neatly arranged in a basket. ALMOND COOKIES. Damn you, you guys got me there! Then what do I spy in the basket next to it? Dare I say.... CINNAMON COOKIES?! Yaaaaassss! I nabbed both of the bags which included three perfect bite size cookies in each. The rest was history. These cookies aren't call all your best friends good and pass them out at your next major gathering but they come pretty darn close. Both were really good shortbread type of cookies and I'm not really a fan of the whole sweet with sea salt combo but it paired well in this instance. I wouldn't go out of my way to come back but if I'm ever passing through Paso Robles again I'd swing by.
