I'm from California, so what do I know about bagels, amirite? Well, a delicious bagel's a delicious bagel, and they have plenty of those at Brownstone. Fat, chewy, and flavorful were all the bagels I had from Brownstone. Love that flavored cream cheese too - sundried tomato with real fresh chunks of tomato and cheddar? So nice. And I do mean ALL the bagels. The first night I visited, I really went in just to take a look. Didn't really plan on buying anything, especially since I didn't have any cash on me -- no cards taken here. I liked what I saw, so I promised to come back in the morning. Well, the dude working overnight made for damn sure I did come back. He hooked me up with three bagels and told me to just come back to pay him. I took those bagels back to my room and consumed them with the quickness. Next morning -- dude was off so I couldn't repay him -- but I made sure to hook up the folks working the morning shift when I came back for my breakfast fix. On our last night in NYC, I wanted some parting bagels for breakfast for the trip back to EWR. Overnight dude got those ready for us, no problem. As we were conversing, we told him we were headed back home. Upon hearing that, he proceeded to hook us up with another dozen or so bagels. Couldn't take them all home, so I hooked my sister up with some, and now she's for sure going to be calling Brownstone home. Meanwhile we enjoyed our share back home on the west coast. I don't expect this level of service and work trying to win us over as customers anywhere. That this dude went to this level and then some was unreal. I wish I lived closer -- actually no I don't. Too freaking cold in NYC. But if your shop was in Palm Springs, dude, we'd be there every freaking day. read more

Tuesday, 9pm. Ordered a bagel with cream cheese, tomato, and avocado--but got a plain bagel with JUST a hint of cream cheese. No tomato, no avocado. When I checked my change, suspecting that I might have been cheated all around, I discovered that the "worker" at the counter indeed not only "miscalculated" my order, but also my money--I was 5 dollars short. Furthermore, this "worker" at the counter kept addressing me as "gorgeous", and told me (not that I asked) that he graduated from law school, and also had a "real job" as a programmer. Yeah right. I learned four things from this experience: always check your change, always check your order, don't trust or tolerate creeps who call you gorgeous, and NEVER, never return to Brownstone Bagel & Bread Co. read more

Went back here against my better judgement, but it really irritates me that I have been going out of my way to avoid this place when it is so convenient. It's been a while so I figured maybe there was some staff turnover or something because it couldn't possibly be worse. Nonetheless my wife went in as I waited outside with the dog because the stupidity of the past still stirred up a bit of heartburn. I thought I would be smart and provide the most basic order of all time. A toasted everything bagel with butter. Seemed at the time pretty damn impossible to screw up. My wife had the guy repeat the order back to her to add a little bit of reassurance that he might possibly remember what she asked for. When we got home and unwrapped our orders.... I looked down at a bagel toasted with butter... except it was whole wheat. My wife made the dumb mistake of ordering something that had more than two ingredients, a whole wheat toasted with sausage and cheese... and of course hers wasn't toasted. HOW? It can't be possible for people to be this consistently bad. They're horrible! It is insulting to the rest of us who live and breath on this earth that people can be this stupid. It just makes me feel so small that I keep falling for it too. Please, for the love of God, someone else open up a bagel shop within 3 blocks of this vacuum of human brain power and you will immediately have a loyal fan base. read more

I'm about to dive into a sandwich here and asked the counter guy for a cup of water. He declined to give me one, pointing at the fridge full of Poland springs. This is bullshit. First of all, I spent ten bucks at Brownstone Bagel on coffee and food, and it's 95 degrees out. I think bottled water sucks and NYC tap is the best. So one star for these guys not being environmentally friendly (and cheap). They said it was the bosses fault they can't give out water, so make sure to ask for the boss to ask why this weird, inhumane, and possibly illegal policy could stand. I won't go back because I will not frequent anyplace that makes me purchase water when what comes out of the tap is BETTER! read more

Just about a 3.5 overall. I hate that they're cash only but it does prevent me from coming here too much (but then I'm more likely to head to a competitor who takes cards). The bagels are an average size (you won't feel too full after finishing one with cream cheese, but I can't speak for the meaty deli sandwich versions) and are neither too fluffy nor too chewy. My favorite cream cheese flavors here are bacon cheddar and cheddar jalapeno. I'm normally a strict lox spread devotee, but their strong points are the aforementioned two. Their coffee is fine, neither great nor terrible. Service can get a bit harried and they suffer from the common crowded bagel shop problem of people paying and receiving their orders at the same time, but in a different order than the original queue (which causes crowding at the register either way). What can I say, I prefer ruthlessly efficient bagel shops with receipts that take credit cards. Seating is present at a few tall tables and they have an array of other baked goods. read more

I live close enough to this place that I'm frequently woken up on the weekends by the scent of freshly baked bagels wafting into my apartment. It's basically some sort of Pavlov's dog mind trickery that makes me instantly NEED to go get a bagel. I don't complain. They're good bagels (the whole wheat everything is a personal fav). The BF likes their egg sandwiches. The guys behind the counter are nice and friendly. It can get crowded but nothing too crazy. They move fast. One bizarre-o thing I can't wrap my mind around is their hours. Sometimes they're open at 1am, other times they're closed by 10pm. And as much as I try to figure it out, it seems there's no method to the madness. Overall an awesome neighborhood staple. Cash only so make sure you have a couple bucks! read more

I stop by this place every morning in the summer for an iced coffee before jumping on the train. The iced coffee is really good here - not bitter at all. Occasionally I'll grab a toasted sesame bagel with scallion cream cheese - but they put a TON of cream cheese on the bagels, so unless you want cream cheese squishing out of the bagel and smearing all over your hands/face/hair/shirt/lap/chair/neighbor/pet, tell them to just put a teeny tiny bit (which will still be a substantial amount). Very friendly service, but often slow in the mornings when everyone is grabbing something before getting on the train. Give yourself and extra 10 minutes if you plan to stop here during rush hour. And keep in mind that it's cash only (but they do have an ATM at the front door). read more

I can't speak much about the customer service in store as I tried BB out via Amazon Prime Now and got delivery to my house which is a little ways away. But I can speak on the bagels I did get. I've been craving everything bagels a lot this week and while there are a few coffee shops in my local hood that sell them, they seem to be missing that spark. BB's everything bagel has that spark. The everything egg bagel definitely has that spark. They are soft on the inside with a chewy crust that's not too hard to bite through, but gives you that sense of differing textures that is satisfying. I bought a bunch, ate two in one sitting because they were that good. Fair warning, though: the everything bagel is a tad bit too salty. I had to knock off a bit of the topping to get to a level where it wasn't so bad. Unexpected, but not a deal killer. But the best part? Even though I live a bit away, the bagels were still warm! I couldn't believe it. They must have just come out of the oven when the delivery guy went to pick them up, but I almost cried with joy to feel a warm bag being placed into my hands. One day I'll go in person and try the other kinds they have and hope I get there in time for them to still be hot out the oven. read more

For years I've heard people say that New York bagels have something special about them, that they taste different and just BETTER than bagels in other places. Didn't quite understand that until I started going to Brownstone. They have made Brooklyn the home of the dopest NY bagels. Not only are the bagels here damn tasty, but the guys behind the counter are pretty friendly, too. I risk getting a ticket at least once a week to double-park my car and run in to pick up my order (I call ahead to reduce the wait), but it's worth it every time. I can honestly say that I've never had a more delicious egg bagel anywhere, ever. I also love that they're always playing the Discovery Channel on their flatscreen! You can totally get up to speed on Deadliest Catch while you wait for your order. Gyeah. read more

I don't really understand where the negative reviews are coming from regarding the customer service here - they have always been great to me when I have gotten coffee, bagels or baked goods here. Joseph or Joe has always been super friendly to me - one time I was short on the bill and did not have enough cash and he just let me go - said 'don't worry about it'. When I tried to pay him back the next time around he refused. Just a really true and genuine person - great customer service and real caring and going the extra mile to serve. As for the quality of the food - its always been on point from the bagels to the coffee and sandwiches. I am a huge fan of their everything bagel with cream cheese toasted. Poppy seed bagels and pumpernickel also on point. Their chocolate chip cookies are also delicious. This is my go to spot for bagels that are decently priced in the slope. read more

3.5 Stars. Already past breakfast but not quite lunch, I wasn't sure what I was hungry for. I walked into Brownstone Bagel and ended up getting a little of both. Obviously they have a wide variety of bagels, but rather than go AM with something egg related, I went PM with turkey, roast beef and jalapeño cheese on an everything bagel. It was quite a filling monster, as I ate half of it waiting for the subway and ate the other half when I got to Coney Island. Hangriness was easily avoided for a few hours to say the least. The service was very good and the gentlemen behind the counter kept the short line moving. They also accept LevelUp, so I used my free dollar credit for my already reasonable bill. We were visiting friends in Brooklyn last week and ended up eating breakfast here every day. I'm not sure if bagels are like this all over New York but I've never had a bagel like this in Chicago. Two of the days we went there I got a bagel with egg, cheese, tomato, and onion and it was the most fortifying handful of food I've ever eaten. We'd seriously spend the day running all over Manhattan and realize we hadn't eaten anything since breakfast, which had miraculously sustained us for hours and hours. Whenever I walk by here (often), it's never the right time for bagels (evening). Today, per usual, I was walking by after work, desperately seeking some espresso to stave off the burgeoning migraine that has been haunting the edges of my head for the past few days (pause for violins). So I stopped in. I'm not one to turn up my nose at a cup of Dunkin' or Starbucks, but my bean tastes tend a bit more toward the, let's say, correlatively pretentious end of the spectrum. This shot sat perfectly in-between those two extremes, just plain solid: creamy, well-pulled, and even served in one of those squirrel-sized paper to-go cups that give me joy unreasonably, inversely proportional to their itty-bittyness. The barista took justified pride in his work, and, as a once-upon-a-time barista myself, I can dig it. Good is good. Take your due. So in conclusion, now I'm thinking that bagels would make a perfectly fine dinner. I will have to find out. read more

The bagels aren't great and the service is terrible, but I used to go here often because it was convenient and even a mediocre NY bagel is good. During a recent visit I knocked on the window several times as I was struggling to hold my very young puppy. They very clearly ignored me, than I asked a staff member who'd come outside if I could order at the window and he said yes. I went back around the corner to order and they continued to ignore me again. I went back to the front and the same guys then told me they weren't taking orders from the window. They used to take orders from the window but I guess during an airborne pandemic it makes more sense for people to crowd into the small space and to keep the window closed. read more

I'm a bagel snob. I moved back to NYC in part because I missed bagels so much. When I lived in Bay Ridge, I went all the way to Absolute Bagels on the UWS for my fix. When I moved to Gowanus a few weeks ago, my first question was "Where are there good bagels?" Brownstone passes muster. Dense, chewy, quality bagels. I get a dozen, slice them at home, freeze them, and then toast them one by one. I no longer have to go all the way to Absolute. (But I will if I'm in that neighborhood.) read more

Delicious bagels. Poor customer service. Imagine how frustrating it would be if the guys behind the counter started making your order, then started someone else's order, and forget what you ordered. As your bagel gets cold, they ask you to repeat your order 3, 4, 5 times... and still get it wrong. And this happens every time you come here. Can you picture three guys behind the counter trying to work on 1 order? 5-10 minutes later, they get to you, make your bagel, but realize they're out of coffee. Or the cash register breaks. Or they spill your coffee. And, yes, after all of this, they still get your order wrong. In my experience, the scenarios above (or some combination of them) happen almost every time. Their location is convenient. Their bagels are awesome. But their customer service leaves a lot to be desired. read more

How much do I love Brownstone Bagels? Enough to sign up for Yelp just to review it. Nearly every morning, I have a chewy-yet-fluffy everything bagel with savory scallion cream cheese, along with an extra everything bagel plain (because one is rarely enough). When I don't get to have my morning bagels, I actually lament the loss of it. On weekends, bacon, egg & cheese bagel sandwiches have replaced the numerous brunch options in the neighborhood. Other bagels, which I sample occasionally, never quite measure up. I think it's safe to say I have a crush on these bagels. To be fair, the decor of the place doesn't have the most character (we thought it was a chain the first time we came across it), and 4th ave. is usually the fat, unshowered stepsister to 5th ave., but no matter! I'll walk on nails for these bagels, and am thankful I don't have to do any such thing, because I would. And the staff is awesome. read more

I cannot tell you how many times the toasted everything bagel with chive cream cheese has saved me on those "rough" Saturday mornings. If you are ordering a cappuccino make sure to get some cinnamon on top of it --- what a drink! If you get there at the right time and the weather is perfect I highly suggest hanging out and watching the people bustle in and out of the Union Street R stop. In terms of bagels this is my second favorite place in the slope with my first being the 5th Ave Bageltique Cafe around the corner. On food and drinks they would get a solid 4.5 but, sometimes they are a little slow with the whole bagel process and seem to get flustered when there are a lot of people so if you are in a rush you may want to skip the bagel and get to work. Also it's a pain in the butt that they don't accept credit cards, but if you have cash and time I highly suggest a visit! read more

Sorry Bageltique, I've taken a new lover. They have a really exciting selection of cream cheeses. Fresh Herb? Cinnamon Walnut? Rocket and Escarole? CHEDDAR JALAPENO?! The bagels are great, a hard, crispy outside, and soft and chewy on the inside, just as a bagel should be. They have a large variety of all the classics, and never seem to run out of egg bagels, even when my hungover-self can't manage to schlep down to BB&B until nearly noon. The coffee is decent, they even give you a choice of the house blend of Hawaiian Kona if you're feeling frisky. Its right outside of the Union St. R station so its a popular breakfast spot. There is usually a line, but the dudes move quickly, besides these bagels are worth taking the late train! read more

I've been here twice for a bagel and cream cheese (once four years ago and then again this morning) and both times found the bagels delicious and the customer service adequate.
