First time at this Belgium masterpiece conveniently located off San Clemente's ADM. the wait staff was charming and followed all COVID Protocols and at times we even felt we were being checked on too much. I had a wide selection of beers from local San Juan Capo's Docent brewery, a Delirium and a Blanche de Bruxx that were all amazing!! The chef was even able to whip me up an off menu Crepe Chicken Carbonara that left my jaw dropped in delight! Will definitely be back for more from this lovely location. First time here so far so good! We sat at the bar, the staff was very friendly and greeted us right away! They have a bunch of Belgian beers which I love! I had the flight so I got to taste 4 separate beers. They have a great beer menu with tons of great foreign beers. They have a decent size food menus as well. This is not a Bistro, this is a diner. Our party of 4 arrived at 5:30, we had a reservation but did not need it. We were seated at a table that was sticky all over, yuk, we had to peel the menus off the table. Our server, who was pleasant, came over and we ordered wine and fries. The fries were nothing special, no salt, herbs, nothing. Our chardonnays were ok, but the merlot was horrid. It had an off putting aroma and tasted like dirt, which it could have been because when it was finished, the sediment at the bottom looked horrible. Am guessing the bottle had opened too long. The wine glasses were all cloudy and one had lipstick on it. The silverware was likewise not really cleaned, perhaps Cascade and vinegar would help! We had to flag down our server as there were only 2 servers, one bartender, and no bus boys. The boeuf bourguignons were good, as was the Quinoa salad and puff pastry mushroom soup. Unfortunately, the garlic shrimp was beyond tough, had to use a steak knife to cut them. We asked the other server if she would get our server, a very curt, ok. I don't think she was very happy. All 4 of us have been around the block and all experienced in dining out. While the food was good for the most part, the other areas were not. I was looking so forward to going to the Brussel Bistro to celebrate my birthday with Friends after 2 years of not going out because of the pandemic to be very disappointed. I had gone there because I was craving Mussels marinières and fries and thought this would be the perfect place to get them from. The server was very nice but he was obviously overwhelmed. He kept forgetting the bread and Mayo that we asked for while waiting for our food. Unfortunately, My husband and I were very disappointed by the mussels " marinieres " which are supposed to be made with shallots, parsley, butter and dry white wine. This usually leaves a lot of bouillons and mussels that are orange are supposed to be flavorful and moist. What we got were dried out white mussels that looked like they had been way overcooked and microwaved with no bouillon in the pot! I complained respectfully to the server who took them back to the kitchen to get a new order. 10 mins later the manager on staff, Adele, came to see us to tell us that if they were to replace the order , the order would not be any different. She said that she had checked out our order and thought there was nothing wrong with it. She was very rude. She obviously did not make any attempt to work with us or make us happy . She offered to serve us something else but we were so disappointed by her behavior that we asked for more bread only to be charged for both bread orders we asked that night, $8/ bread basket! They never said that they charged for bread either. This is the first time I get charged for bread! My husband and I drove 40 mins to eat " moules Frites ". My husband also tried escargots that he had not had in a long time and he thought they were probably frozen escargots because they were not very good. My advice, avoid this restaurant in San Clemente. I may try in the future Brussel Bistro in Laguna but not for a while! I will make my own in the near future! Mussels cook in 5 mins! They were very tasty and unlike anything I've ever had. The portion is not huge and just allows everyone in a group of 4 to have a bite or two. The escargot- pretty standard and won't disappoint if you are a fan of escargot. Not the best I've had, but definitely not the worst. Main course: We tried the mussels pots ... the Provençal has a light tomato broth and was very tasty. You can order the pots in small or large. The small is good for one person for dinner, if you order the fries to go with it... and you should order the fries. The fries were the BEST part of the whole evening... might be the best fries I've ever had. They were crispy on the outside , fluffy on the inside and just perfection ! We always come here during lunch when they have their mussel lunch special for $15. This is one of the best meals I've ever had. My bf and I both agreed that every single bite was perfection. We sat at the bar on a Monday around 6:30pm and it wasn't too packed, they had the NBA playoffs on, and the bartender was nice and knew her stuff. The experience was great but the food? INCREDIBLE! I had the mussels in the white wine and garlic sauce with fries on the side with the spicy mayo sauce. Bf had the salmon with fries on the side. We have been loyal customers for three years. By American standards the food was good although not really by European standards although service was most of the time acceptable. During lockdown we supported this restaurant as much as possible by ordering online. Today we went to the restaurant again, the prices had increased, the quality of the food has worsened, and so has the quality of the service. Bread used to be complimentary but not any longer, the service staff appears to be untrained and not capable of adequately dealing with guests' complaints. For instance, when we said to our waitress (Kennedy H) that the bread used to be complimentary she didn't seem to care at all. When we ask her to tell the owner that we won't come anymore she showed the same type of reaction. In summery, we were getting the impression that the restaurant is going down the drain. I just can't say enough about how great this restaurant is! The pivot with this crazy pandemic and are WINNERS. Shortly following the first lockdown they offered food online, easy to prepare items that I could freeze, etc. It seemed like each week the website evolved and was so user friendly, more food, sides etc added. I am HOOKED. I ordered one of the Christmas dinners, AMAZING. along with favorites to heat up the whole holiday. My sister comments on how i now cook with "barcodes".... the little labels that float in the water after ai boil the packages. haha I don't care, I feel smart to avoid the grocery stores etc. Why slave away when this fabulous restaurant can do it for me? San Clemente Location - Favors larger parties, if you come as a couple and want a nice table, even with a reservation and when there's no line or other diners waiting to be seated and with multiple tables open, they won't seat you at your preferred table.
