I am buying a house and it needs a new furnace and AC. I called today to speak with someone to try to schedule time to have someone come out and the gal who answered the phone (Michelle?) was short and rushing me to get off (the whole call was one minute!), ultimately telling me to fill out a request on their website. If you cannot take the time to listen to an inquiring potential customer, you don't get my business. I've been calling HVAC companies today to schedule a house visit and this was the third one I called that had, what seems like, better than typical Yelp reviews, but I was so put off by her hurrying me off the phone and trying to redirect me to their site that I won't give this company the time of day now. You couldn't even talk to me longer than a minute. All it takes is some decent customer service to work with people. For contex, I recently installed a new HVAC system because the previous one decided to die two days before we had the highest temperatures on record. Because all HVAC providers were slammed, and the HVAC i needed was a custom build and cost $14k, I had to go with the first company available. Even then, the appointment was a month out and then four months to get the new HVAC. Everything about that experience - service call, ordering and install - was a disaster so I was seeking a different company for the annual maintenance. Lots of my neighbors use Bruton and all rave about their service so I called them, and only them. The answering machine set the tone. They let you know they are more than happy to provide service but if you have a need that requires service before they can fit you in, they encourage you to call other providers and tell you were to find options. Their concern is getting the customer the help they need. Wow. Refreshing. Scheduling is super easy with their online scheduling system. An email confirms and then reminds you prior to appointment. Today the tech sent a text to let me know he would arrive in 30 minutes. Right on time he was at my door, put on plastic slippers without me asking, and got right to work. He was efficient, pleasant and professional. Left my house spotless. He reviewed my contact info and within minutes of his departure, I received an invoice, the exact amount I was quoted. Will be having Bruton service my system every year. And while I hope to never have an issue, if I do, they will be the first company I call. read more

We recently needed to get our HVAC system replaced. It was original to the house and had given up the ghost in the middle of a heat wave. We contacted and spoke with several different companies and finally decided to go with Bruton. My biggest complaint was that I had to wait a month to get them to come out. After they came out I realized why I had to wait a month. They do great work and they are in demand. The owner himself came out with the crew on the first day to make sure they understood my specific concerns about airflow and installation and the install crew were great guys. I know it's not really necessary but they took the time to answer all my questions as they were working, explained what they did, and took the time they needed to get it done professionally and right. They've been back after the system was running for a bit to make sure it was doing what we wanted and the house is comfortable again. I have worked in people's homes most of my life. And I always did my work as if I was doing the work on my own home, all the way up to and including clean up. This has set a very high expectation in my mind for others to do the same thing when they are in my home and it often leads to being disappointed at some aspect of the project. Bruton not only met my expectations but exceeded them in every way possible. James and Matt came out to give me an estimate and immediately personified what professionalism is. They were polite and paid attention to every detail of the job. The estimate they provided was more than reasonable and came under one of their competitors. To be honest, the experience during the estimate sold me and even if their estimate was higher, Bruton would have got the job. Michelle, who works in the office was very helping in assisting me with navigating the billing and financing process, which was seamless thanks to her expertise. On the day of the install (they scheduled two) Bill, Arthur and Matt hit the ground running as soon as they arrived. They laid down runners on all the carpets, installed everything without damaging walls or flooring. They also decided to stay late to finish the job in one day! This also probably forced them to deal with Portland traffic at rush hour, but they still cleaned up their work areas in a manner that would impress my mom (that's another story) and left my home in a better condition than they found it in. What can I say? These guys are awesome! Bruton Comfort Control did repair work on an older, existing ductless HVAC system, as well as installation of a new ductless HVAC mini split system for four bedrooms in a home we purchased in the last year. In summary: Their bid was competitive and fair; the work they did superior to the work of two other companies I have worked with previously; Bruton's staff was professional and knowledgeable; the work was timely; their communication throughout the process was excellent, thorough, direct, professional and cordial; and their repair work and the installation work was likewise excellent. I would trust them unconditionally with an install or repair of a ductless HVAC system. If you want more details, read below. As background to the job: We moved into a house with an older system, where only the shared areas of the house had been configured with a Daiken ductless mini split HVAC system (living area, downstairs family room, and dining room/kitchen). The four bedrooms--two up, two down--were still on the original baseboard heaters from when the house was built in the late 1960's. The previously installed system was about 10 years old and appeared to have never been serviced. The outside unit made a high pitched whistling noise that could be heard with all the double-panes windows closed, and had an issue with the bearings or compressor motor. The noise was only getting worse with time, and it needed to be serviced, repaired, or replaced. One of the inside units, which was mounted on an inside wall, had a pump to drain the condensation line which had failed. This pump installed in the wall was making a horrible rattling noise tantamount to the sound of an old wind up alarm clock clacking away with no snooze button in site, piped through a loudspeaker. It was so bad that we could not use the unit, but it would also turn on randomly even with the unit off, which was absolutely crazy making and needed immediate attention. We had attempted at least one repair already with the company that did the original install work, which was now recommending a convoluted and expensive solution involving a new pump and custom drain pan in our attic. Also, the time line was weeks out. I called Bruton Comfort Control, and the owner of the company, Matt Bruton, promptly came out and met with me. We talked through the problems with the pump in the wall and with the noise from the outside unit, as well as the goals with the install of the new units. Matt quickly came up with a much better, more efficient and cheaper solution to the faulty wall pump on the inside unit than the much more expensive repair suggested by the original installers after they had failed to resolve the issue on the first repair. Matt also quickly identified what he believed to be the issue with the outside unit. The cost for both repairs was significantly less than the prior quote I had received from the first company. As part of the proposal process, Bruton's staff also suggested and took care of verifying what parts of the repair work could be done under existing warranty prior to any work being executed. I had a precise quote for all of the repair work and a reasonable schedule for completion shortly after that initial consult, along with a very competitive quote and recommendations for the install of the system for the bedroom units, that took into account our specific needs and what could be viably done in the home at the most reasonable cost. The work was all done well, on schedule and on budget with the bid. All of the staff that ever came out during the work was always kind, professional, tidy, demonstrated great knowledge, and were very thoughtful about making the install in the least obtrusive and most reliable setup possible. There were never any surprises, and communication with Matt, the owner, James at the office, and the technicians was always excellent. I just couldn't believe how pleasant everyone was, even when a small complication arose with one of the units post install, which they resolved quickly and completely in a manner that once again exceeded my expectations. I wish that my experience with all contractors were as good as my experience with Bruton Comfort Control. I don't normally take the time to write these kinds of lengthy reviews, but my experience with Bruton was--frankly--so good, that I felt it necessary to do so. They set a high standard for themselves and others, and I am thankful for their work and that contractors like Bruton Comfort Control are out there! read more

We had a large project with a lot of moving parts: removing an old boiler, adding new heat pump, removing old hot water, adding new tank-less hot water, and adding a generator. We interviewed 5 electricians, 5 plumbers, 5 HVAC outfits and chose Bruton immediately for all the HVAC work. Of the 5 HVAC outfits we talked to, only Bruton told us we weren't getting what we should out of our existing AC mini-splits. Following their suggestion, we added some funding in the quote for a new Heat Pump to look at the old units. Not only were these guys SUPER professional, and did an outstanding job on the new heat pump (and removing the old external boiler unit), the old min-splits are now fantastic - way better than when they were new. Bruton found a lot of issues our previous installers left behind that greatly affected performance including a completely occluded, kinked, coolant line and loose caps on the coolant lines. Don't look any further - these guys are the best - AND very busy - so contact them early to get on the schedule - it was definitely worth the wait (they were that last team in line to come in and complete our upgrades). You will not be disappointed. Some of the HVAC outfits recommended putting the heat pump in the attic with all new ducting because it was more convenient for THEM - Bruton replaced the air handler unit under the house and re-used/repaired our existing ducts! I'm surprised I am the first to review this amazing company but am also happy to be able to give them the positive review they deserve. My husband and I bought a beautiful 1920s Craftsman that was completely remodeled. Everything was new, including the heating, electrical, plumbing etc. Long story short, a few months into living in our new home we discovered some parts of the remodel project were a little shady and the contractors suddenly were no where to be found (disconnected phones, unreturned emails, company website vanished). One of the discoveries was that our furnace was a lemon. We didn't know it was a lemon until after several visits from Bruton trying to figure out what the heck was going on. I'd love to go into detail about what this company has done for us, how they have gone above and beyond to make sure we received exceptional service and customer service, but that would probably set a record for longest review on Yelp. Instead, let me just say they rank up there with Nordstrom and Les Schwab in how they treat their customers. They have gone out of their way to make sure we were satisfied were their work and when we weren't, they were persistent in making sure we were. In the end, they extended a huge favor our way because we were suckers of an unfortunate relationship (or lack thereof) with a flip contractor. They were always mindful of our personal life (we have newborn twins and they made sure their work didn't interfere with our babies' schedule) and were quick to respond to our albeit incessant and probably annoying calls/emails of frustration. I can't say enough positive things about this company. We will definitely use them again if a need arises (but hopefully not!). read more

I wasn't pleased with my experience with this company. They did send someone out promptly the same day, which was nice. However, the technician that came to my home seemed very junior, and inexperienced. He spent half the time on the phone with another technician trying to figure out what the problem with my AC was. This didn't exactly instill a lot of confidence. I overheard him talking with the other technician that he turned up the fan on the unit from low to moderate. I would think you would talk with the customer about this option before just making a change like this. Now it always feels like there is a strong breeze in my home. In the three hours the tech was at my home he was only able to get the temp down one degree, when he declared that the unit was fixed. I explained that I wasn't comfortable paying for a service when the AC can't get to the temperature I set on the thermostat. He proceeded to argue with me about how fast the unit can cool... I've lived in my home for 5 years, I know how fast the unit can cool. It's not that I didn't want to pay for the work done, but I merely asked do they guarantee their work. He refused to say they would. Every contractor I have ever worked with would simply answer... "Of course, please give us a call back if you aren't satisfied with the work or have any issues." The next day I called the main office to calmly explain my displeasure with their tech, and the woman on the phone quickly brushed me off and didn't even say "We're sorry." read more

We wanted to take advantage of the Energy Trust's incentive program to install a new mini-split ductless heat pump system in our house. Energy Trust included a list of contractors so we called the first one and they came out and gave us a sky-high bid that did not include a deduction for the electrical work my husband was going to do. Then they didn't return any phone calls. Same for the second folks we called. We were about to give up when my husband remembered that he had used Bruton for a regular furnace check-up and liked what they did. So we gave it one last try (the deadline for the incentive was fast approaching). Are we glad we kept trying! Bruton scheduled a visit promptly. They knew all about the incentive program, gave us a bid that was $1500 lower than the first two, and scheduled a date in the near future which they stuck to. Their craftsmanship and care in working around our house and garden was exceptional. Then they followed up with all of the tax credit paperwork and warranty information promptly mailed to us.
