Our first time having Uzbeki food and it was pretty good. We went on a weeknight, so it wasn't busy at all and there was no live music. The decor was a little tacky and had a fake fireplace, but the food and service were great. We ordered family style for two of us so we could try a few things and the portions were large. We had enough to take home! We didn't get a photo of this dish, but we started with the Chebureki (fried dough with onions and beef). It was a little salty and could have used a bit more flavor, but it wasn't bad. The Baba Ganoush tasted homemade so you could tell it was authentic. The Manti was alright - thought it could also use more flavor. But the lamb kebab dish was amazing! The meat was tender and very flavorful and the rice and vegetables it came with were great partnering items. This place was recommended to me and it did not disappoint. We went with a small group and told them we've never been to a Russian restaurant before , the waiter was very helpful in answering all of our questions. We ordered many dishes and shared them all. We started with the Adarian Khachaprui, Beef Tongue, and Samsa. The Beef Tongue was ok, served cold, it was something different. The horseradish that came with it was delicious. The Adjarian Khachaprui was a big hit, some people were leary of the egg in it, but once you stir it all together everyone went back for more of it. Samsa was awesome, flaky pasty filled with flavorful chunks of beef and lamb. We next shared 3-kebabs, Beef, Chicken, and Lamb Ribs. I would pass on the beef, it tasted like a poor cut of meat. The chicken was good but nothing exciting. The Lamb Ribs were amazing. Even people in the group who dn't normally enjoy lamb said how much they loved it. Make this high on your list of items to get. We then shared Beef Stroganoff, which we were all excited to order before we got there. It was the only dish we did not finish. It wasn't very tasty and again, the beef seemed like a poor cut of beef. Finally one of my favorites, although the rest of the table was just happy with it, I would go back just for the stuffed cabbage. It was two large stuffed cabbages, so much flavor, it was great. Shady practice adding 22% tip automatically-we ended up having a freaking 40% tip- after asking multiple times for the check. I had never had food from this part of the world before. (Uzbekistan/Russia) it was really different and delicious. We arrived for lunch and started out with their borscht. I've had it at a Polish restaurant before and liked it, this was next level, don't say "I don't like beets" just order it! We also ordered the Adjarian Khachapuri I would describe it as delicious fondue in a bread boat for dipping. We also ordered Khinkali which were large dumplings filled with a beef filling (think giant soup dumpling). They were good, but I would have liked a bit more flavor or perhaps a sauce. I'm sure they were authentic but just a little bland for my taste. Service was very good, a young waiter who spoke Russian to some of the other guests. It wasn't very busy when we were there. The ambiance was interesting tablecloths and nice silverware, large fake fireplace at one end of the restaurant roaring away. Picked up Bubala for myself and the gals last month and was blown away by the delicious offerings! I'd actually been craving khachapuri for the longest time and when I looked it up on Yelp, Bubala was the first option that popped up. We ordered the Adjarian khachapuri, the Bubala khachapuri, the lamb kebabs, and a slice of honey cake to share. Everything was super delicious, and I was pleasantly surprised to see that the Bubala khachapuri was like a spinach-stuffed pizza. The honey cake was perfect, light and fluffy but not too sweet, and the lamb kebabs were seared to perfection. The Adjarian khachapuri had gooey melted cheese and the soft bread pulled apart well, perfect for dipping. I can't begin to tell how much of a treat this was. My daughter's roommate's mother is from Azerbaijan, so for the most part, she chose the menu. This allowed us to sample so many more dishes than if we had each chosen an entree and a few appetizers. I honestly can't remember everything we had, so I'll just hit the (many) high points. The first big hit was the potato salad. I don't see it on the menu, but it was great. Nothing like our traditional style, this featured potatoes, peas and other veggies chopped small with a light mayo and dill. Even know that more was coming, we found ourselves going for seconds. That was followed quickly by chebureki and blintzes, both filled with ground beef. The chebureki was tasty, with a perfectly fried crust. The blintzes were to die for. These were my two favorites of the entire evening. If you love cheese, you must try the Adjarian khachapuri. The boat of sweet dough filled with cheese, an egg and butter was almost too rich. It's good that we had some time before the entrees came out. The borscht was very good, as were the manti dumplings. My son said the lamb chops were the best he's ever had. The plov was a plate of tasty rice topped with pieces of tender roasted beef. I would have eaten more, but we were stuffed by then. That didn't stop us from trying the Napoleon, honey cake and vareniki with cherries with hot tea. All were great, but the honey cake was easily my favorite. It's worth pointing out that Bubala is more of an Uzbecki restaurant than Russian. I loved that - as much as I ate and as full as I was - I didn't leave feeling like I had a food baby as I have when trying the Kolduny at a Russian restaurant. And the service was every bit as good as the food. You really have to try Bubala. read more

Atmosphere: We visited on a Wednesday night at around 7pm and there were no other customers in the restaurant. According to their website, Saturdays can be quite crowded but other nights it may be extremely quiet, with only the sound of a TV playing Uzbek pop music at a low volume to break the silence. Everything is clean and the decor is tasteful. Wait Time: Many of the items on the menu inform you that they take 30-45 minutes to make. They are worth the wait! I can't complain about a kitchen that insists on doing things fresh, but definitely consider an appetizer. Taste: I'm not going to pretend to be an expert on Russian or Uzbek cuisine but it was very nice. It's hard to stand out in food without cranking up the salt or the spice, Bubala does it without either (the food isn't particularly low salt, but you won't be reaching for water after every bite is all I'm saying). They make most things fresh on request and it shows in the flavor. The only thing I wasn't impressed with is the little cups of tomato sauce that seem to come with most things. It tastes like a very sweet spaghetti sauce, but you can use or not use it as you like. Portion Size: Portion sizes are somewhat small, especially given the price. And they have it all - Uyghur Lagman noodles, Georgian Khachipuri and Kinkali, Uzbek Plov, Kazakh Manti and, I believe, horsemeat, beef tongue, all sorts of Russian pickled dishes, blintzes, Beef Stroganoff, and dumplings, Ukrainian Chicken Kyevand Turkish kebabs, Everything was top notch from my time in Ukraine and Kazakhstan. I had read a review where a lady didn't like the Plov, but I thought it was excellent. I got the chicken Kiev. I also had a Garden salad and my wife got the Olivia salad. I don't have the option of 3 1/2 but can't justify a 4. One point to know before you go, it's BYOB. My lamb kabobs were Devine. But, my husband's Plov, at recommendation of the waiter was inedible. We had an appetizer that was a fried pie but I can't recall the name. It was okay. We ordered the vernieki or something like that spelling for dessert. The flavor was good but the texture was a no go for me. That's a dish that some would love, full of cherries. The atmosphere is old school and warm with real table cloths.
