To celebrate my birthday, my close friend treated me to lunch at this unique restaurant. While I have never enjoyed Eastern European and Uzbeki cuisine, I was excited to try this place. The dining room is quite large, and off to the right there is an entertainment space, We were promptly greeted, and sat at a large table at the front, as there were 7 of us meeting up for lunch. My dining partner and I ordered the Greek salad to start, along with two orders of the Adjarian Khachapuri egg and cheese bread, an order of the Khinkali soup dumplings, and we wanted to order the Stuffed Cabbage (Golubtsi) rolls, but they were out, so we ordered the Beef Stroganoff to share. The food was exceptional, with different flavors and textures. Beware, some plates do take longer to prepare as they are made fresh. The Greek salad is large enough to share and does come with black olives instead of the standard Kalamata olives. The Khachapuri was amazing! It's a mixture of cheese, with a cooked egg on top and butter. When the dish arrives, you mix the egg and butter into the melted cheese and it heavenly. The Khinkali dumplings were extremely tasty with a unique blend of herbs and spices. The Stroganoff is tender beef in a mild gravy with onions, served on a bed of mashed potatoes, and it was very good! For dessert, we ordered the Napoleon, which was mediocre at best, as the custard was only in the middle, resulting in dry spots around the edges. Ther service was mixed, as the initial server was a pleasant young lady who was very engaging, and made good recommendations. We had a male server towards the middle of the meal who was completely inattentive. We were asking him a question and in the middle of our conversation, he walked away. He also disappeared a few times, and we were puzzled as the dining was practically empty, as it was an early Saturday afternoon. Although the service was lacking, the food and cuisine will definitely bring me back.

Bubala Café & Grill - Preston Rd. (Dallas) Without a doubt, the absolute best Russian and Eastern European Cuisine in all of DFW Metroplex‼ I've been here a few times. Here, you're more than a customer. You're treated like family. I've eaten Pelmeni most of my life, but never tasted fried Pelmeni before. Surprisingly they were really good and delicious. Dipping it in Sour Cream made the flavor extra unique and special. Bubala kitchen did a great job preparing them. My friend, Misha and I came here to unwind, relax and enjoy good, Russian and Uzbek cuisine. Here, every table is white cloth with elegant, yet affordable food menu. The space is great for all group sizes. They offer plenty of tables and chairs. On weekends they are usually fully booked. Be sure to call in advance for reservations. Every dish reminds you of simpler times and the food... Cooked to order. Every bite reminds you of home-cooked meals. Some menu items will specify cook time. That is a nice touch of transparency. In most Russian and Eastern European cultures, you don't rush through the cooking process or eating process. You're meant to gather around the table, packed full of meaningful conversation before and during your meal. We ordered, "Boiled and Fried Pelmeni," "Borsch," and "Herring Under Furcoat/ Shuba" (Layers of pickled Herring with onions, beets, potato, carrots, eggs and mayo) Portions were generous. Kiril was our waiter and he did a great job. He was very knowledgeable about the dishes and was helpful in answering any questions we had. They've been open for five years, at least. What is their success secret? "The key to our success is simple: providing quality consistent food that tastes great every time. We pride ourselves on serving our customers delicious genuine dishes from Eastern Europe." (Quote from their website) If you're looking for absolute best Russian and Eastern European dishes, this is the only place to go in all of DFW Metroplex. They do speak English and Russian, for your convenience.

Was very excited to try out some Georgian dishes ,,it's been too long ! I ordered the chivuriki to begin with . Two large pockets , freshly fried and filled with beef and onions . Very yummy 4.5/5 I also ordered the khachapuri with the egg - a fairly large pastry that was altogether pretty good . Not the best I had but it was fresh and tasty . 3.9/5 Friendly and efficient service. Place is not cheap

First-time visitors to Bubala Bar & Grill. Can't believe we have been missing out on this place! It is a true gem. Just walking through the door gave us welcoming vibes reminiscent of our trip to Eastern Europe. Delightfully adorned with intricate aesthetic elements, a charming, inviting dining space complete with white tablecloths, and tastefully elegant ambiance, I knew right from the moment we entered that Mom and I were in for a treat. It set the mood and tone for the afternoon. We were greeted, seated, and served by Kirill and ordered their traditional Kompot Berry Juice to start. It was crisp, cool, refreshing, and went perfectly with our meal. The service was attentive, courteous, and exquisite. Kirill ensured we had received the dishes we ordered and oftentimes anticipated our needs. We ordered Adjarian Khachapuri, Vareniki Dumplings, and Chicken Kebabs to share and split the Russian Honey Cake for Dessert. All excellent! Everything is made in-house daily from scratch, and you are sure to find something that sparks your fancy on the Menu. It is clear that high-quality ingredients (and a dash of true love and care) are utilized in food preparation. The Adjarian Kachapuri was melty and cheesy with the right balance of flavor from the egg and butter. As delicious as it was, we had to box up the remainder to take home as it was far too large a portion, (even between the two of us), to share. Next time, we will order one less item. The Vareniki Dumplings were absolutely divine and can best be described as soft, pillowy pockets of savory potato and onion. Sour cream was the ideal accompaniment here and truly enhanced the taste by providing a sharp contrast and depth of flavor. The Chicken Kebabs were succulent, juicy, flavorful, and tender. Served with rice, onion, cabbage, and potato chips, the dish was a true palate-pleaser and a delight, both in presentation and taste. The Honey Cake was perfectly and lightly sweet with airy and flaky layers of goodness. We never felt rushed during our meal and will certainly come back to try other Menu items. Adding to our regular restaurant rotations for sure.

Tried Uzbeki food for the first time, and I'm obsessed! Growing up on Chinese food, I noticed some similarities, and so it totally hit the spot for me. We got Khachapuri (cheese boat), Plov (traditional rice dish), and Manti (dumplings) --YES, you need to try them all!

Edit: After coming back again, the food has gone down in quality. See pics for comparison. The plov has a shorter grain rice that is missing things they used to have like chickpeas and veggies on the side. The samsas taste like frozen ones from the store. The dough is very thick, no layers (not flaky), greasy, tasted undercooked, meat was still cold inside, and left me with a stomachache. It's sad to see what was a staple for us decline but hopefully they can improve.

This place had me feeling a little nostalgic given that the last time that I had cabbage rolls that weren't made by myself were made by my grandma. I absolutely love a place that has Slavic dishes that are hard to find in most restaurants in DFW. My only note is that the service was really slow. I know that a lot of their food is made to order and might take longer than normal to give you that good quality, but there was only one server on a Tuesday night waiting on everyone in the restaurant. I felt like there was a point where we were waiting a while just to order dessert and leave. Note: Their Russian Honey Cake is to die for. Do not come here without at least taking a slice with you.

I came here on a date night with a friend, this spot having been recommended for a good classy spot to dine. While I did enjoy my time and the live performance, I can say it could be considered overwhelming for those who are less inclined towards loud noises and party scenes. There was a live performer and DJ who were singing and remixing music and it was almost a persisting volume which may interfere with any individual seeking a more quiet and classy experience (maybe for quiet, go on a weekday). The friend I visited with almost seemed upset that he could not talk or hear over the performance, making communication difficult with the server. Personally I did not mind it. It's not everyday you see a live performance, afterall! The service was mediocre but not off-putting, but certainly not spectacular for a place considered so high end. I ordered the salmon whereas my friend ordered the stragonoff. Because everything was made fresh, it took a while for the food to come out, and when it did it was delicious! I thought the portions were quite generous and hearty - though the bill is rather pricy for what it is. However, for the cultural experience and the novelty of trying new things, I would recommend this to my friends and family, just warning them to watch the bill and be mindful of the day and atmosphere they want!

Went here for date night and the contrasting energies are a bit overwhelming. The dining area is clean and on the finer casual side with white linen napkins and table cloths. The music was abhorrently loud, so much so that I thought about deducting a star but the food is too tasty to do so in good faith. Plov- immensely delicious. The rice is medium grain and cooked perfectly. Not too soft but also not too firm. The carrots are braised to the perfect texture and the beef is tender and flavorful. It's decadent and homely. Lagman - a very tasty soup!! This reminds me of a veggie crock pot soup my mother makes every winter. It's a tomato-based soup that echos all over the world but there's definitely something special about this one. The noodles look irregular so I assume they're made in-house. The veggies are perfect and the broth is rich with beef flavor. Khachapuri - worth the wait! Although we didn't have to wait long. This is technically an appetizer but you have to wait for them to bake it, so it takes 25+ mins to arrive. In the meantime we received and enjoyed our other dishes. It's a fluffy, pillowy bread filled with cheeses and a raw egg. It's so hot when you receive it that you can see the oils bubbling from the cheese. It's way too good. And when it gets too salty or rich, dipping a piece in the Lagman helps resets the palate. This is certainly a place we will be adding to the rotation. Can't wait for our next visit. :)

This was my first time trying Russian food and I loved it. My Russian foodie friend took a group of us here and knew exactly what to order. The tongue salad sounded strange but was quite good. My favorite dishes were the Plov (a braised beef and rice dish with carrot matchsticks), Adjarian Khachapuri (a fresh bread boat filled with gooey cheese and runny egg yolk - drool!), and the Lamb Samsa (flakey pastry filled with minced lamb). I had my doubts about the Shuba (chopped herring, eggs, potatoes, carrots, beets, onion and mayo) but it was surprisingly good - like a potato salad and not too fishy. We also had some Varniky (boiled dumplings with sour cream) but this was the most plain dish compared to the others. Definitely try the amazing honey cake for dessert if you have room. Soooo good! I hear they have music and dancing on the weekend nights.

Fantastic service. Staff is attentive without being annoying. The restaurant is handling COVID safety protocols well. The appetizers were amazing, I'd go back just for them. Bread was soft with a slight crunch. The main dishes were just ok... plov was a little bland and the chicken was a tad over cooked. Borscht was a little bland as well and felt could've used more flavoring. Would recommend the visit. read more

Had dinner here with some friends a couple of nights ago. Outstanding food -- I had the chicken shish kabob, everybody in my group had something different, everybody thought that everything was great. (I can't stand borscht, but the two people in my group who ordered it said that it was great. Go figure.) The decor is comfortable, heading in the direction of elegant. The service was friendly and gracious -- not smothering, more like dining with family. I literally can't think of anything unflattering to say about them. I don't think they require reservations, but you should call first because (1) I don't think they're open for lunch yet, but that could change, and (2) they close for private parties a lot on weekends. (I think they've become the informal Russian social center in far north Dallas, check out the party videos on their Facebook page.) Yitzakirina was so attentive and helped guide us through the wonderful menu. We started with a dish we love and the grey, cold rainy day made it perfect. It was a big bowl of hot Borscht. Wonderful. My wife and I then shared the Plot. Deliciously flavored rice with very tender beef. The two homemade pastry desserts were amazing and delicious. Oh. And it's BYOB. This is some of the best food I have ever had. People need to support this place if you can. It is the best comfort food I have ever had. It is not too heavy and the ingredients are top quality. I really love places that bring an experience, culture, love, and taste all through their food. It's not too strong and not too bland. Just right!!! It's the perfect food to drink alcohol with or even if you are recovering from the night before. I paid for this and I truly feel like I owe this place a glowing review. I tried to get into this place pre-COVID and it was almost always super packed so I'm glad I was able to get in today. A friend and I had an absolutely lovely meal. We split everything and the megerilian khachapuri was rich but absolutely lovely - we loved how it was very clearly fresh and made by a loving hand. We were reliving the days from an Eastern European trip from a couple years ago and the food here delivered. We also had the Vareniky, which was AMAZING. If we weren't so full, we would have ordered so much more and even more dumplings. Service here was lovely - multiple servers stopped by and checked in on us regularly but not disruptingly. My water glass never dipped below half and the owner/manager stopped by to check on us personally. Please support this local business! They are AMAZING! I will definitely be back. read more

Delicious Uzbek food. Try the plov, the national dish of Uzbekistan. Everything was freshly made and full of flavor. The staff was attentive and helped us with our food choices, since everything was unfamiliar to us. Beautiful setting, lovely decor, fresh linens on the tables. This place is a hidden gem. Next time we visit Dallas we'll definitely be back. read more

I can't say what it's like at the restaurant itself; in this time of plague we ordered out. GrubHub delivered not long after, and we promptly dug in. I tried the plov, which was really solid--it had just a teasing kick of what tasted like cumin, and while the sliced beef was a bit on the dry side it didn't detract overall. My wife had the lagman soup, which I only tried a little of but definitely got my approval. I also ordered as sides for us to split both vareniky (which I've had before, but these are on the short list for best I've had) and kasha with mushrooms, which I liked but she feels needs something to help bring it together. As I write this we have a medovik in the fridge waiting for us. Our stomachs are still settling. I can't wait. Neither for it, or the next time we get food from here. EDIT: Update on that medovik. If you don't know what that is, it's a dessert with multiple thin layers of icing and honey-sweetened cake, dusted with fine crumbs. I've had it elsewhere, made it myself multiple times, and jumped at the chance to have someone else do it since it's just a lot of work. The times I've made it the icing has been made of sour cream, whipped cream, and powdered sugar, which balanced out the sweetness of the cake. This one was different. Maybe it's a local variant, maybe it's just a fine-tooled preference; the medovik here is richer and *much* sweeter than the ones I've had before, and had a softness to it that bordered on chewiness. My wife thinks there was cream cheese involved. I'm not complaining at all, and would absolutely have it again and recommend it, but if you had it before at, say, Russian Banya? You would be in for a surprise when you tried it here, and I feel folks should know that going in. read more

We took a chance to try something new and glad we did. Everything we got was great, especially the dumplings and honey cake. We ordered to go and everything was wrapped up well and nothing leaked. The beef stroganoff was nice and so was the plov. Point of personal preference: the plov has fatty cuts of meat which may be a turnoff to some, so if that's not your thing try another main dish. read more

If you know your cultural geography, this food is Bucharan. Buchara is a city in Uzbek that is 2 millennia old and right on the silk route. A large portion of Bucharan were Jews going back to the earliest days. Bubala's is fused with a few real Yiddishkeit recipes. Love it! On my most recent trip, my wife and I shared Beef Stroganoff and Stuffed Cabbage aka Prakas from our Austrian and Ukrainian great-grandparents. This is a special place. read more

We were told about this place but it was even more fabulous than we had heard! We love trying new international restaurants and Bubala really impressed us. We took the whole family and asked Natasha what dishes she would recommend in each category. The food was from Russia, Uzbekistán, Georgia and more. We tried so many dishes with impossible names. Everything was fabulous! Even the simple tomato, onion and black pepper salad was great. The lamb ribs were so delicious, we had to order a second set! The cheesy pizza dish was a huge hit with our 9 year old and her dad. Inna, Zima, Marina, Anna and Natasha all made our visit so memorable. The restaurant is lovely, classy, spacious and attractive. Everything is cooked to order and comes out at the ideal temperature. We highly recommend the lamb ribs, lamb soup, lamb kabob, napoleon, honey cake, etc.! read more

I worked with the Bubala team to hold a surprise 25th-anniversary party. I can't say enough great things about the food, service, entertainment, and venue. Everything was incredible. My guests enjoyed themselves late into the evening, and many commented on how great everything was. The team at the restaurant was great to work with while preparing for the party and during it. They put their heart and soul into ensuring the event exceeded my expectations. read more

It had been months since I had Russian food because of Covid so I was SUPER excited to try this place after reopening since my husband is of Soviet decent. The other Russian place with actual good food five miles from this one seems to have shut down permantly (rip Russian Banya). I've never been so disappointed... All the reviews on here must be made by friends/family because this food is waaaaay overpriced and tastes like NOTHING. We spent over $70 dollars and I'm so disappointed. The kebabs were dry and the portion was so tiny. We got one of every dessert and they all tasted stale and old. I get that it's a tough time but don't sell old food! Yuck! The only decent thing were the potato dumplings, but since the service was awful too I'm going to leave it at 1 star. We were very excited to find a restaurant that served Uzbek food. And we were not disappointed. The food was absolutely amazing! We just kept ordering and ordering, taking several bags to go. Everything from the authentic Uzbek bread, to the Russian Blintzes (which I could eat every day!), to the Manti, and the Vareniky, to the Kabobs and more. The food is just amazing. Everything we have eaten there is cooked with love and care. The bread is heavenly! And you have to order the rice...and not talking about a side dish, but a main course from the menu, but they only have on Fridays and Saturdays, as it takes all day to make. It is worth it. Oh my gosh! What a delight! Having never had Russian cuisine, we weren't sure what to expect. First, the decor is elegant and gorgeous! Our waiter helped us choose the perfect meal and gave us some background on his family and what they eat. Loved it and it helped broaden our appreciation. The kompot was refreshing and not too sweet. The kabobs and dumplings were so tender and flavorful. But folks, you HAVE to try the Adjarian Khachapuri!!! Omg, 5 cheeses, the lightest dough, an egg that cooks on top of the hot cheese! The night I was there, all tables were taken up. They were very quick to greet us and sit us. The owners Sima and Marinara are extremely kind and welcoming. This place is doing false and misleading advertisement. Adjarian khachapuri and khinkali are Georgian dishes and not Russian!!! Give credit to the country who invented those dishes. Adjara is a region in Georgia by the Black Sea. Wow! What a very surprise gem in the area. For those of you who aren't familiar, this establishment sells what I guess you can call, for lack of a better word "Pan-Soviet" cuisine. It has most of the Russian classics, but also some foods from the Caucasus nations, and a plethora of dishes from Central Asia namely Uzbekistan. I assume the owners are Uzbek due to a pork free menu and all the Uzbek posters and artwork. The restaurant is welcoming. It looks way more classy and elegant then you think a strip mall joint would look, but is still causal so no need to dress up. Everything here is delicious, especially the various dumplings. Soup, salad, main entrees. It does t matter it's all delicious and nicely presented. Blintzes are very savory, Qutab is nice. Then AdjariAn Kachapuri is popular it seems, but I think it's a bit much. Maybe without the butter it would be better. Makes it salty. For main dishes I like the tabaka (butterflied Cornish hen with a cold smoky tomato sauce) and their Kebabs are wonderful. Very flavorful, tender lamb and a generous portion. Much better then any kebab from any of the Lebanese or Turkish restaurants around here. This place does kebabs right. Try this place out. I live in Kansas City and had heard of Adjaruli Khachapuri but never tried it. This was the only place i could find on Yelp that had it so I stopped in for dinner on my way back from Galveston. The Adjaruli Khachapuri was great! Something different but great. My son and I shared the beef stroganoff and I had tried the vareniky. The drinks arrived, and the appetizers followed about 10 minutes later -- fine so far. But there were no utensils. We had to ask for them, and we asked for plates as well, which never came. The empty dishes from our appetizers sat in front of us for a solid hour with no one clearing them. The bartender who took our order never once checked on us. With 3-4 people working behind the bar, only one server approached us during the entire 40-minute wait between appetizers and dinner to ask if we needed anything. The bartender told us twice that our food was "coming out shortly" -- and still, 40 minutes passed. When dinner finally arrived, my order was wrong. I ordered the Mongolian Short Rib, listed clearly under the Entree section of the menu. The bartender claimed I had ordered off a "happy hour" menu -- one I never saw or was told about -- and had swapped it for BBQ Pork Ribs without saying a word. Knowing a replacement could take another hour, my friend swapped plates with me and took the ribs. He had ordered the steak frites, which, for a rare steak, should have taken no more than 5-6 minutes to prepare. The third entree, fish and chips, was just okay -- a bit soggy and not particularly fresh. To top it all off, after everything we dealt with, the bartender never asked how our meal was or if we needed anything else. The food has potential, but the service was inattentive, disorganized, and frankly unacceptable for a busy restaurant that should know better.

The food is still good, which is why i'm giving 3 stars instead of lower, but overall the experience didn't feel the same as it used to. Not sure if we'll be back.

I walked in a man and left as a giant, butter-filled bivalve. The Highlights: The Bread: That warm loaf is a siren song designed to ruin your appetite. I ate it like I hadn't seen a carb since the Great Depression, only to realize I still had five pounds of fried swamp-critters on the way. The Portions: My "Platter" arrived on a tray roughly the size of a solar panel. I found a piece of catfish so large I almost tried to perform CPR on it. I'm pretty sure the "Small" salad is just a whole head of lettuce thrown at your face from the kitchen. The Swamp Thing: This drink contains enough rum to make you legally a pirate. Two sips in, I was ready to fight an alligator. Three sips in, I couldn't remember where I parked my car--or if I even owned a car. The Atmosphere: It's loud enough to drown out your internal monologue telling you to stop eating. It's the only place in Dallas where you can spend $100 and still need a bib like a giant, fancy infant. Final Verdict: Go here if you want to feel like a king, but dress like you've given up on life. Elastic waistbands are not a suggestion; they are a requirement.

I will go there tonight and order a couple of things. I wish to take exception to the person who said that this establishment is engaged in deceptive advertising because it serves Georgian food while identifying itself as Russian. Obviously there is a lack of knowledge associated with this assertion because Georgia was (from 1922 to 1991) a part of of the Soviet Union . There was cross cultural pollination; and Georgian food is now very popular in Russia, where it is always acknowledged as Georgian without any attempt at obfuscating that fact or appropriating the origin of the food. It is correct to call this restaurant Russian even though it serves food that includes items from the Caucasus (Georgia) and Central Asia (Uzbekistan) because the food from all these places is now as much part of the Russian diet as Pizza, which comes from Italy, and Tacos, which come from Mexico, are part of America's. Please stop being petty and be grateful that you can find as much variety of food from the former Soviet Union as you do in this one Russian restaurant. read more
