It was a pretty good day. Swimming and kayaking on Lake Sunapee, seeing distant relatives I haven't seen in a decade or have never met, celebrating my great uncle's 80th birthday. Pretty nice. Gas is still under four dollars up here, and when I took a picture of some guys fishing from their kayaks, they asked me if it was for Kayak Monthly. Uh, sure? We went here for lunch today, five adults and one small three-year-old girl. Bubba's has a decent looking menu for its kind of place: -Appetizers like fried calamari, seafood-stuffed portabella, wings, artichoke hearts. We got the quesadilla filled with tomatoes, black beans, scallions, and cheese, with salsa, guacamole, and sour cream. -Soup and salad. -Sides, some of which sounded pretty good, like Biloxi Baked Beans and Bubba's Honey Cornbread. -Sandwiches such a Monte Cristo, crab sandwich, Philly Cheesesteak, a glorified BLT wrap, and the burger, which I'll come back to. -Dinner entrees like stuffed chicken (goat cheese! sounds good), 14 oz. ribeye, 12 oz. New York strip, ribs. -Pizza, both with precreated combinations or make-your-own. -Some basic seafood choices. -Some pasta. All this is to say, it sounds pretty good. On paper. And it looks good, too. And the service was good and friendly. And they waited until all our dishes were ready (the little girl ordered a pizza, which took a little longer than our sandwiches) before bringing them all together, which was thoughtful, I suppose. The quesadilla already described was tasty. That's all there is to that. It wasn't out of this world, but the ingredients were pretty expected. Not bad, not great. Fine. The burger: three of us ordered them. They are $7.99 and they come with the normal toppings: choice of cheese (American, cheddar, Swiss), tomatoes, red onions, lettuce. Then, with NO EXTRA CHARGE, you can also ask for bacon, avocado, and or roasted peppers! How great is that? I got the bacon and avocado and only left off the peppers for fear of it not being able to fit in my mouth. And, to top it off, this is the kind of place where they ask you how you want it cooked. NICE. Medium rare, please. My great aunt asked for medium. It came with fries. The fries were like the quesadilla. OK. Nothing special. Not bad, but definitely a little lacking. They definitely needed the salt and ketchup I put on there. When the pizza was still in the oven, we could see all our sandwiches sitting, ready, under some heat lamps. This probably meant the burgers were still cooking under there. Either way, my burger was medium to medium well. No pink rareness to speak of. It still tasted like a burger, and the toppings were good, but if you're going to ask how I want it cooked, I'd like it to be cooked that way. My great aunt wasn't satisfied either, but she also may just be picky about burgers, I don't know. I want to give this place a better review, and if I'm ever in the area again (Lake Sunapee is pretty nice, I probably will return with the fam sometime), I'll probably try something else there. But from what we had, I'd pass next time. Whew! That was long. Last comment: Somehow one of us managed to get sweet potato fries. Was that an option I just didn't see or hear? We recently dined at Bubba's and were disappointed in the food quality and prices. My wife ordered the NY strip steak -- it was inedible. Beyond chewy, like a piece of rubber! When she brought it to the server's attention, she looked at her like she had three heads. The chef did make her steak tips which were ok ( not great though). I didn't expect a free meal for the inconvenience but was surprised that they charged us $28 ( the NY strip price) instead of the steak tips price. Plus they added some mystery fee of $5 ( labeled as non food). The rest of the meals were just so so. Highly overpriced for Newbury, NH IMO! Family of five was $149 ( plus tip). The service was extremely slow but maybe this could be due to staffing. The food was sub-par at best. The fried seafood that a couple people in my party had was really over cooked. The seafood chowder didn't really seem like a chowder, more like a soup. My scampi was okay, I've had worse but I've definitely had better. The grilled Reuben was okay, but soggy on the bottom half. Overall a place that is okay in terms of food and service. We sat down and the AC was turned to arctic cold and the waitress was unable to do anything about it. The bacon burger was a plain cheese burger, so they had to bring a side of bacon. A great place for a casual lunch on the shores of Lake Sunapee. It's a relaxing spot, complete with workmen bellying up to the bar. It's a locals' hangout. Their menu is very basic. They make an excellent cheeseburger, along with a fish sandwich. Their chicken Alfredo pizza is wonderful for splitting among people&goes well with Sam Adams Oktoberfest beer. While I've seen "broccoli on pizza" as "not OK",Bubba's does it just fine. Wonderful food, friendly, helpful service, and a beautiful view of Lake Sunapee. read more

Tonight my "award winning" seafood chowder was like eating lumpy wall paper paste. The chips in my fish and chips were rubbery. The fish was over cooked. I sent my order back in exchange for risotto. Our go to restaurant in the area. Tons of options to pick from and most if the food is reasonably priced. We have been there dozens of times over the years and I can not remember ever having a bad meal. The location is convenient and easy to get to especially if you are on your way home from the Mountain. Added bonus: they have an ice cream stand too. The wait staff is always pleasant and even when they make a mistake they are quick to make it up to you. The kids menu is very well priced and the kids get their choice between an ice cream or cookies for desserts. read more

My first time in the place......they should be ashamed of how their team did.....$12.00 for a Reuben.....half a slice of corned beef Briskin, maybe 1 inch wide and 4 inches long, 1 tsp sour kraut.......and the pizza was burnt....no not brick oven burnt....over cooked burnt....frying oil old and rancid......the service sucked....not even asked if we needed more Ice Water......returned the Reuben, and I told the waitress that it was unacceptable......she asked about the pizza and I told her that the couple thought it was burnt and tasted burnt......then after about a half hour she came back and asked if we would like to have a box to take it home with....I asked if she was joking.....then the check was brought by someone one else.....the manager should have come by the table but never did.....all I can say is Shame Shame Shame on you! Just ordered take out of two fried clam plates (whole bellies ) which were pretty good and good serving size. However, we got to our destination to eat two minutes down the road and the fries were limp and there were no eating utensils, napkins, salt or pepper. Might want to get some better quality control. I stopped in on Fathers day for a Burger and beer. Had the $12 bacon/cheese and a flat Sam Adams draft. Ordered medium rare and received a dry hockey puck. It looked like something that was sent back and "freshened up" in restaurant lingo with fresh veggies ect....the only good thing was my sympathetic waitress. I give 2.5 star do to the wait staff, or lack there of. I just had the one of the driest, no personality, not caring waitresses ever. I actually had to get up and get my own refill of water from the staff area. Just because you have a nice view of Lake Sunapee, doesn't give you the right to have lousy staff. Was busy for 2:30ish, We both had their claimed seafood chowder, a bit pricey but well worth it, considering all the seafood chunks in it, it was delicious. Wife and I just "played it safe" at dinnertime and came away with a pleasant experience..... Their seafood chowder is to die for... Its won some local awards and rightly so.....its incredibly delicious and very good....we each had a bowl,,,,,.. we shared an appetizer of mozzarella sticks ---yummy!!.....I had a bacon cheeseburger(well done)..cooked perfectly with decent fries, and wife had crab cakes(appetizer) as her main event. I told you we played it safe. Bubba's aspires to bigger,better things..they update their menu daily on their website....maybe next time we'll be more adventuresome. place was very crowded but all the help seemed very attentive and positive. they seem to do a big "bar" business. 2 bartenders were hard at work filling orders. good mix of locals and vacationers. Relative to other options in a 5 mile radius of Mount Sunapee, this place is a gem. It might get 3 stars in a bigger city, but for this area, a solid 4. Service was excellent, food was fresh and tasty. We each had a glass of wine the Yellowtail Shiraz and Fat Bastard Merlot. Clam chowder was hearty and perfect after a cold day of skiing, homemade cornbread was to die for and the cheezy bread was yummy too (tasted like pizza with no tomato sauce). 2 of us had the grilled salmon with citrus and broccoli, the third had the chicken risotto. Tonight, while hubby was ordering dinner for us and ice cream for our Grand daughter, a truck went rolling out of Jake's parking lot, next door, across traffic and came to rest across Rte. 103. As a reitred officer, hubby went running to 1. make sure no one was in the vehicle, and 2. to stop anyone from running into it. Of course there was one jerk who had to run his mouth about hubby directing traffic, which hubby handled as a professional. In the meantime, my Grand daughter was waiting for our order and overheard someone tell the girl at the window "I told you we are out of whole belly clams", which was part of our order. When hubby returned from the accident scene, our Grand daughter told him of what she had overhear. He told the girl at the window to cancel the order, except the ice cream, which was already being eaten. So the point of the story is that even tho' they didn't have what we ordered, they were charging us for a whole belly clam dinner and giving us a clam strip dinner. Not so great. Greeted nicely, short wait for nice table with lake view. Lots of good sounding choices on the menu but the food is pretty mediocre. I found the prices way on the high side for casual seafood restaurant 3 adults, one kid, 3 drinks (they don't know how to make a Mai Tai), $120 for really average food.
