I liked Buckeye Donuts even before they served hot food, back when it was strictly a donuts-and-coffee place. The donuts were good (crumb cake being my favorite) and the coffee kept getting refilled. These are good things. The extended menu has supplemented that with gyros, falafel, and breakfast sandwiches during breakfast hours. The fries there seem to be store-bought crinkle cuts, deep fried in vegetable oil and sprinkled with salt and paprika. Mystifyingly, they are among my favorites in Columbus. All of this makes Buckeye Donuts a good place to stop in to pick up donuts, read the paper with some coffee, or have a quick, cheap meal. But to fully appreciate Buckeye Donuts, you need to be part of the campus neighborhood. Walk by and spot friends through the big plate glass windows at all hours. Grab a window stool for a front row seat to the annual madness of senior bar crawl. Get to know the owners, the employees, the clique of older men that congregates on weekday afternoons. Get to know Jeff Clark. Maybe get a job there, or an apartment upstairs. Dodge in one night when a rough-looking group of drunks has been harassing you since 15th. Stumble in after the bartender has advised you to leave Larry's. Experiences like these will allow you to fully appreciate the 24 hour donut shop. I can't really imagine going somewhere else to buy doughnuts. If you really want your coworkers to like you, show up with Buckeye Doughnuts one morning. I like simple things. The plain cake doughnut is so crazy good. Golden brown fried perfection, not too sweet, a little poem about how awesome breakfast can be, at sunrise, sunset, or any other time you want. I've heard they sell things besides doughnuts, I've ordered coffee there, it was fine. The folks that work there are super nice. I always leave in a good mood. OSU has somewhat of a transient population, but there are three people that I can count on seeing on any given hour-or-so visit to buckeye donuts. It's been this way for the past 11 years, and those three people are: 1 - Jeff Clark 2 - Zak Starkey 3 - Charlie Jeff is an older black man, who wears a faux-fur trench coat and is eager to learn your name (only to forget it immediately) and will do any odd job for a few bucks. Zak is an "icon" of columbus, the "indy art capital of the midwest," ya, he's about what you would expect. Charlie is a janitor at the law school and reads a book a day. I've been here many times. I consistently return for the donuts - classic cake donuts and fry cakes, a vast repertoire of specialty donuts -and it's open 24 hours. Highlights: amongst the ordinary donuts, the old - fashioned cake donut has a delightful, crispy exterior. It would pair nicely with a cup of good coffee - unfortunately, if you want that, you'll have to go elsewhere. The iced coffees I've had typically have an overwhelming, chemical aftertaste. The drip is worse: watery, with bizarre overtones of melted grape popsicle. Among the gourmet donuts, the apple fritter is a clear highlight and perhaps the single reason you must stop in. It is glazed very sweet, with caramely pockets of rich, tangy apples. Ribbons of cinnamon run through the decadent pastry, which with its high gluten content has the structural integrity of a classic skyscraper. Pulling it apart is a delight - the donut will stretch for miles before the sturdy filaments within completely separate. The falafel combo is the lunch menu item I'm most comfortable discussing. It comes with a choice of sauces, the tzatziki being my perennial choice. It is not as sweet, and more sour, than other tzatzikis. The sandwich as a whole suffers greatly from a lack of salt; the falafel itself, while typically crispy and fresh, is underseasoned. There is also an overabundance of salad (especially raw white onion ) heaped into the pita. The experience is improved by spraying the whole mess with Sriracha, which is generously provided at regular intervals along the classic formica countertops. Recently (at least it seems to me) the fries have undergone a notable improvement. Instead of a traditional fry, combos are served with a crispy swirl of crispy, (battered? ) potato. They are delicious. Upshot: it is almost criminal to open an establishment with such a stark disparity in quality between donuts and coffee. Talk about value, 3 dollar breakfast sandwich, 1 dollar tater tots, $5.50 gyro lunch special. I don't know how they are making money with the huge portions they are giving away. Gyros are not as good as appollos but buckeye gives you a lot more fries and gyro meat. Donuts are pretty good and this place is extremely clean for a 24/7 joint. Buckeye Donuts, I wish I could give you five stars. I frequent your establishment. Whenever I have a craving for a doughnut, you do not disappoint; I also love your paprika-covered fries. I love that you're open 24 hours a day for my noshing needs, your coffee is more than serviceable, you have music that I like, and between myself and my husband, we always get that fifth free doughnut. However. I'm knocking off a star because your late night service can be--well, shoddy at best. Even with few people in the store, I've had to wait; I've watched the counter person stand and chat while customers wait to be helped; and occasionally, when I get food there late at night, it's not nearly as tasty. I've also noticed that there is a large inconsistency with your chicken fingers; they are seemingly different every week. Also, there was that one time you guys ran out of doughnuts. You know, I come here an awful lot. Pretty much only for breakfast, whether it's early or not. They have cheap, decent coffee, including a dark roast, and cheap breakfast sandwiches. I only get the egg and cheese, and be forewarned, it is supposed to cost $2, says so right on their sign that is displayed prominently on the sidewalk everyday, but nine times out of ten they will charge you $3 for it. Donuts are a good price, and are really well made. They have amazing apple fritters too. Hmm, tots are on the spot, and they have sriracha sauce that I loooove to mix with the ketchup for my tots. It's a campus staple and was featured on Dave Atell's Insomnia. It's open 24 hours as well. Some very interesting conversations take place here. The bathroom is through the kitchen, which is interesting. The downside: Sometimes the customer service can leave a lot to be desired. They do not handle things very well if they screw up your order...like, you'll probably get told it was your mistake not theirs, regardless of what went down. Also, they have some of the worst falafel I've had anywhere in Columbus. Really, I can't complain though. It's a good joint and I recommend it for a cheap breakfast over the chain options. read more

Buckeye Donuts has been a campus staple for a long time... but for me one of the best things about it has only been there a few years: George Psyhogios. Former owner-operator of Souvlaki Palace II, his old restaurant was torn-down to make way for the Steak & Shake in 1999. After bouncing around for a little while, he came back to campus & setup in Buckeye Donuts, adding his fabulous gyros & fries, as well as chicken gyros, falafel, greek sausage, salads, and desserts! The gyros are great! They're not huge, but they're not too small, perfectly fresh. Fries (crinkle-cut, presumably from frozen) are always nice & crispy. And not only are they good, but CHEAP too - the "Gyro Basket" (gyro, fries & soda) is only $5.50! Don't get me wrong, Buckeye Donuts still has donuts - a good selection, they're very good donuts, and also relatively inexpensive. Add in serviceable coffee, friendly staff and a very small/intimate counter setting, and it's a great little corner hangout, stop for breakfast, or inexpensive & tasty lunch spot. read more

Every now and then (or maybe more often), the boy has donut cravings, and we end up driving up High Street trying to remember where the turn is for Buckeye Donuts. We don't come up here during the week because there are too many students around, but on the weekends, especially in the mornings, hardly anyone is around except the old men sitting out front shooting the breeze. The glazed raised donuts are fabulous; I'm not really a fan of filled donuts or cake donuts, so I can't speak to those, but the boy likes their "long john" filled donuts. If you buy four donuts, you get one free, so that's five amazing donuts for less than $5. So, "Yay! I understand that sometimes things get backed up when they have a restaurant full of college students, but they have a terrible system, as they often throw the bags on a table without any way of identifying them and lose/skip orders entirely. I waited over an hour without hearing my name called, only for them to tell me that my order had been sitting on the table (it was not there). I love this place so much! I wish parking weren't an issue, but if you can find a spot down a side street (most likely you have to pay a meter, boo) then you're on your way to an excellent breakfast, lunch or dinner! A few times they didn't have them in stock though, so if you're in the mood for one particular item you can even call ahead and make a customized doughnut order to ensure it's in stock at a particular time!!! Yes, I'm that person. I have to have THAT doughnut that sells out and I'm too picky to choose any others. They accommodated my order/request and pickup time, props to them! :D I called the night before. I know, a little crazy, but it's so good it's worth it. Their iced coffees are pretty good. What isn't there to love about a place that is open 24/7 and serves breakfast? Maybe I'm easy to please, but Buckeye Donuts is one of the best things about the campus district. Unfortunately, I usually get off at the stop right near Buckeye Donuts, making the tempting aroma of donuts and coffee nearly irresistible. I like Buckeye Donuts because it is the perfect kind of "classic" fast food. It's simple, it's unpretentious, and it's good. The breakfast sandwiches are actually really tasty. The bagels aren't horrible (which is really saying something, for Columbus). The bacon is crisp and actually made there (or so it seems)--none of that preheated crap. And the egg...ooh, the egg! Egg patties microwaved and devoid of any flavor are not what you'll find. They actually fry the egg up when you order, so often times my egg yolk is still just a little medium--not quite dry and powdery like a lot of eggs. Yum. The donuts, from the couple of glazed ones I've tried, are also delicious. Buckeye Donuts is a staple on OSU's campus - so much so that I believe it contributed to the closing of a Tim Horton's next door. It is open 24 hours and at any time of the day or night, you will find someone in there, smoking, drinking coffee, and/or studying. There are always coupons in the Saver magazine that allow you to get more bang for your buck. The donuts are delicious - I LOVE the buttermilk donuts - and the coffee is good too. The gyros are also not bad if you can get over the cheesy posters that advertise them. So I know this a staple of OSU, but it's not my favorite. The donuts are great! Takes me back to the old traditional ones I used to get from our local bakery in our small town. Their breakfast sandwiches are okay, but not great. They are super greasy and don't stand out from any other breakfast sandwich. My biggest thing about this place is the cleanliness or lack thereof. The guys working in the mornings are not friendly and don't look to be the cleanest. They handle your cash or cards and then go directly handle got food bare handed. Buckeye Donuts has to be one of the most reviewed businesses on the OSU campus, so if this review is seen as just piling on, so be it. BD is one of very few dinky dives (I say that affectionately) left on the High St strip that are fixtures of a bygone era, and thank goodness it survived the Campus Partners makeover. As an OSU alum, I can safely say that it was a prime break spot for myself and my fellow film majors running in and out of Haskett Hall like so many headless chickens. The sheer numbers of donuts we consumed over the years was unfathomable, including the king of kings: the lemon-filled ...right up there among the wheel and the printing press among the best creations ever. After I graduated and moved away from campus, it wasn't as easy to make excuses to visit my old stomping grounds, but it's not until I visited the chain doughnut shops or relied on the pastry cart at catered meetings at work that I realized the treasure I'd left behind. Sure, the parking is a pain, sure, there's no drive-through, and sure, you're not likely to find a seat due to the students who like to camp for five hours on a single coffee purchase. Do I go for nostalgia? Sure, but mostly I go because these folks fry up one mean doughnut. Let's not forget that as everyone knows, a doughnut shop is the perfect cover for a Greek restaurant. Not a huge menu, but they've got the standard gyro selections pretty well down, along with an assortment of Greek style salads as well. The breakfast grub strays from Greece but it is still a flavor feast, featuring croissant or bagel sandwiches with eggs, bacon, sausage and your typical fare. The bottom line: the food is cheap and more varied than you'd think, the quality is solid (trust me, not all doughnuts are created equal), and it's open 24 hours, so if you're a young college kid and therefore can eat anything, this place has breakfast, lunch and dinner written all over it. Did I see correctly the last time I went by Buckeye Donuts that they got rid of that Street Fighter II coin-op? God I really hope not. It was almost my favorite aspect of Buckeye Donuts. But, no- I like their donuts too. For what it's worth I don't really go for donuts- too sweet on the average day. But every once in awhile, with a good glass of cold milk or a hot cup of black coffee- sure, sure. And Buckeye Donuts are definitely my favorite on campus. I've never sat and enjoyed my donuts at Buckeye Donuts. Maybe this is a shame and maybe this is a blessing, It always seems cramped to me, and you see the same faces in the window night after night- being the newcomer in a regulars place is okay when you don't have to sit four inches from the regulars. Seeing as it's one of very few places to get food 24 hours in Columbus, I like Buckeye Donuts. And their donuts are damn tasty. I didn't much care for their falafel, but since I was eating it after a night of drinking, that didn't stop me from practically inhaling it. Ah one of the last few iconic places to grab food on the OSU Campus. If they have not gone out of business, changed hands, or been torn down by the evil Campus Partners. I have been here at various times of the day but mostly late at night. I enjoy their food no matter what state I am in though. The bacon donuts (if they are there) are my favorite to get with a side of black coffee which is always acceptable. I have not really had their various breakfast food honestly but had heard good things from friends. Their gyros ate always tasty and pretty spot on. I don't fancy myself a gyro expert but I love them and love the ones I always pick up from Buckeye Donuts. I will note I also enjoy the old dinner feel they have kept over all these years. When I come in it reminds me of various old dinners I've visited over the years that are sadly gone to the times. I wish more places like that were open around this city this late at night as most seem to close by 2-3pm. read more

If you walk in when they're just bringing the fresh donuts out, you might find yourself turning into Homer Simpson. What I like is that Buckeye Donuts is a homegrown commodity and they're good. Compared to other places like Tim Horton's or Krispy Kreme, there's more to these donuts because of them being cake style. Tim Horton's and Krispy Kreme donuts are airier. Buckeye Donuts does have more than just donuts. I've heard their gyros are pretty good. I will get there one day. So far, I'm still trying the bakery section. I've tried a lot of different types of their donuts from peanut covered to coconut to blueberry filled and I've found that the standard ones, particularly the old fashioned, are my favorites. They've all been good, but sometimes I just have simple tastes. You can't beat the donuts, especially with the price of one donut for 95 cents or 1/2 a dozen for $4.95 or a whole dozen for $7.99. The baklava is gooey and messy and drool-worthy good. It's slightly more expensive than the donuts, though. As far as the place itself, I feel like it could stand to expand. Buckeye Donuts is so popular that it's seemingly always packed. There's enough room to the left side that they could probably do it. True, it's a parking lot, but there's enough parking in other places nearby that it wouldn't be that much of a problem. Seating is available, but you may be fighting for a spot. I've sat and ate my donuts at the counter before, but I dare not too often otherwise when someone walks by, it feels like I have to hold my breath because of how tight it is in there. read more

After trying most of the donuts here I will give them more credit. I will go through the one's I have tried and offer my opinions. Buckeye: OK, nothing special, yeast donut with chocolate frosting and peanut butter. Tastes like a dunkin donut chocolate frosted with jif pb in the center. Blueberry Cake: Very good, this is one of the better donuts. For some reason their cake donuts are not very consistent, but the blueberry cake does not disappoint. It's very moist and thick and a great cake donut. Devil's food: Very good, another one of my favorites. This too is one of the better cake donuts. Moist, thick, and tasty. Crumb Donut: Below average. Not much flavor and dry for a cake donut. I would skip this one. Coconut Cake: Average. This one is somewhere between the crumb and the blueberry/devils food cake donut. It's not super moist but not as dry as the crumb donut either. I am a coconut fan but this still was nothing special. Bacon Long John: Good, the bacon is fresh and you can taste the quality in the bacon. I also am a fan of maple icing. The donut itself was not super soft or anything but the addition of bacon and maple adds to its' appeal. It's filled with their vanilla icing which is a little too sweet for me. Glazed: Good, their glazed donuts are not too bad either. They are pretty large for their size. I would rank a krispy kreme one above this though. Apple fritter: Below average, this apple fritter is dry and lacks flavor. It is huge but this is a situation of quantity over quality. Chocolate Creme powdered: OK, the donut is soft but a little too airy. The Chocolate creme (icing) in the middle isnt that great and again is too sweet to enjoy. Pumpkin spice: OK, average cake donut. Nothing special, it'd stick to the blueberry cake and devils food. read more

Who doesn't love Buckeye Donuts?! This is my family's go to for a late night eat. So many great snackable options! The mozzarella sticks are honestly the best fried cheese I've ever eaten. And most people won't think to get a gyro at a donut shop but you'll regret it if you don't! As a breakfast food lover, I also am super happy that I can get my breakfast sandwich fix until 10pm! Well damn I do not eat a lot of donuts so this was a treat. Best donut I have had in years. I had the chocolate cake and it was good. Sucker didn't last long as I finished it before I was out of the parking lot. Wish I had grabbed a custard as well as it looked really good. Guess they are known for their maple long johns... not my style so didn't try one with the exception of my sister in-law getting a specialty one with bacon on it which I had to take a bite of... that was pretty tasty as well. Since I began Undergrad. at Ohio State, this has always been my go-to late night food place in Columbus. Whether you have the drunchies after a campus bar hop, or want to people watch by the window, you run into all sorts of characters at Buckeye. The place grows on you each time you go and classic campus establishment. Buckeye Donuts sells a number of different colored t-shirts with their imprinted slogan 'Open always, closed never'. It could be a Level 3 snow emergency, OSU classes cancelled, or a zombie apocalypse...I have never seen the place closed. The dining area is a bit small (20 patrons max), yet intimate enough to start a conversation with a stranger. Most of the time, it is nothing but the classic rock hits overheard on the radio from the Rolling Stones to Elvis. The inside has looked the same for years to give Buckeye a classic diner aesthetic and chill atmosphere. Here's the rundown on the goods. The donuts here are actually pretty decent with my personal favorites being the pumpkin spice & chocolate cake. The java here is decent enough to get your day going and avoid a 10 min. wait at a nearby Starbucks. I've had no complaints about my food or drink getting to me in a reasonable amount of time, and the staff is pretty efficient. For close to 6.5 bucks, you can get a Falafel sandwich on pita bread (falafel, lettuce, fresh tomato, and choice of tahini/tzatziki sauce), a ton of fries w/ cajun seasoning, & fountain soda. The falafel can taste a bit dried out at times, but nothing that a squeeze or two of Siracha sauce can't fix. The gyro meat is rotated on a spit & seasoned accordingly. On average, my friends would rate the taste around a 6.5/7 and reflects the pricing. Taking into account the 24 hour accessibility that has given me plenty of fuel for finals and the affordable prices, Buckeye Donuts is a campus landmark that has & will continue to serve generations of Buckeyes for years to come. read more

I grew up in New Jersey, and since moving to Columbus, I have longed and longed for an all-night diner, or something like it. Well, I found something like it. They don't have malts or egg creams or cheesecake, but they do have coffee and donuts and cheap diner food. That's not a complaint. Sometimes I want shitty fried food, and Buckeye Donuts has it. It's all delicious in its own special way. And to be fair, their donuts and gyros aren't shitty, but in fact pretty good quality. The place has an excellent atmosphere, perpetually plays awesome classic rock, and the customer service is awesome. The people who work here are fantastic, especially the night crew. The place is sometimes packed with a line out the door, you probably don't want to stop by on a game day or after the bars close. Usually though, it's lightly populated with very laid back folk. It's easy to strike up a conversation with your neighbor. It's a great place to hang out, people watch, work on that all-night paper (endless coffee), or shoot the shit and smoke with the guys outside. Those who know me are going to be very surprised by this review. I am a fitness freak and usually shun donuts (sugar, fat, and complex carbs, oh my!). In fact, prior to moving to Columbus, I probably ate on average one donut per year. A Columbus native recommended this place, so I decided to surprise my husband by bringing home donuts last Sunday after yoga. The guy who helped me at the counter was SUPER nice. I was asking about the different donuts, and he patiently answered my questions and was totally cool about it. I got an apple fritter and a "Buckeye" donut (regular donut with chocolate frosting and a big dollop of peanut butter in the middle). I was also checking out some of the breakfast offerings. One of the guys at the counter was eating tater tots. Maybe it was something in the air at Buckeye Donuts or maybe I was delirious from just finishing a 100 degree yoga class, but something about those tater tots was calling to me!! I cannot even remember the last time I had a tator tot. So how was it? FRICKIN' AMAZING! The Buckeye donut was awesome, like eating a Reese's peanut butter cup donut (just as the employee described). The apple fritter was also pretty tasty, extremely sweet though (It made my teeth hurt and reminded me I need to find a dentist here in Columbus.). The tater tots totally hit the spot. I guess I might become a donut-eater now, because I actually asked my husband run out and get me a Buckeye today! There is a counter if you want to eat-in, and they serve breakfast stuff and sandwiches. I definitely will come back and have a meal, maybe try the gyros. read more

Buckeye Donuts is a real treat! The donuts are great, however my favorite thing here (besides the breakfast sandwiches) are the GYROS! They are so good and filling. Its an added bonus that they deliver throughout the wee hours of the night. If you are in Columbus, head over to Buckeye Donuts for a real treat. After finishing this review i will have to go check if i ever gave a 5 star rating before today. These donuts were delivered to us this morning fresh ordered by a client on the west coast who we have been doing crazy overtime for. Christmas. New years. Saturday. Sunday. Nights. For weeks.... People have been carving shanks trying to stab each other - until today. These donuts are simply paradigm shifting. They almost make up for all the blood sweat and tears we have suffered by the crazy timelines of this customer. If nothing else it made us forget at least a little with every bite for that moment. There is only one questions left - who reigns supreme in the 614 ? Donut factory in hilliard or buckeye donuts? I think i have made my decision. I wanted to like this place... it's close to my house. I gave them 2 chances but both times I was disappointed. The fresh donuts are great. But half of them are stale. Not to mention the woman at the register scoffing and being rude. Too many other donut options out there to try again. So bummed. read more
