My roommate brought me here about a month ago when I had just moved to the Columbus area. My first impression was that it's a really cute and simple place to get a bite. I was also very pleased they put on a couple of KISS songs. The guy at the counter was nice when I ordered my Greek Salad.... OK. I think of most of the campus area as something of a wasteland. Honestly, if you've ever lived in a big city before, you should be really bored by this area. Most of the restaurants are just franchises and chain restaurants; who really cares if you can walk to both Raising Cane's and Wendy's? The area is steadily being obliterated under a pseudo-Suburban onslaught of mediocrity; the characters from Office Space will be eating here before we know it. Ah, but there's Buckeye Donuts. The donuts are still good, fresh, and affordable. It's open 24 hours a day, when you want to really kick yourself for getting donuts at 3 AM. Yeah, you have to time going here around when the line won't be too long, so choose accordingly. And yeah, the seating is pretty limited. But how can you fault Buckeye Donuts? They're one of the last few real places left in the campus area. Buckeye Donuts is one of those places that we wished existed outside of the college campus realm. This is truly a place where people from all walks of life come together for good donuts and good (albeit interesting) conversations. The donuts here are very good and are obviously what they are known for but they also have some other items on the menu such as breakfast sandwiches, gyros, tots and falafel. Buckeye Donuts is open 24 hours a day and is ideal for those studying late in the libraries for finals or those who have to get up at an ungodly hour for a 7am winter quarter class. The coffee is fairly good and cheap. You don't come here for the decor and the staff can be hit or miss depending on the time of the day. All-in-all, Buckeye Donuts is worth a visit at anytime of the day or night when you're in the area. If nothing else, you can chalk it up as a new life experience. read more

Tradition and food meet to create a great experience! Although my wife and I are loyal supporters of Buckeye Donuts and both have Buckeye Donuts t-shirts, we both have only ever had the gyros and donuts. We go there roughly every other weekend. Can't beat the $5 lunch special of a gyro and fries. For me, frequenting Buckeye Donuts is more about the experience and supporting local business, not to mention feeding my wife's coffee addiction. Although I've never taken advantage of their 24/7 service (ie in the middle of the night), I do have a lot of respect for the fact that they are accessible at any time. I enjoy taking my son there and sitting at the bar-style table, looking out the front window watching all the activity outside. Although I was born in the 80's, the nostalgic 50's style dining makes me feel like a kid again, when life was simpler! 24 hours, donuts, gyros. Why am I just learning that you exist? A gyro shop masquerading as a donut shop or vice versa? Nonetheless, for us non-OSU people, we've been cheated by not being told about this place. Stopping in on a lazy Sunday at 1PM, line was on the sidewalk, every seat full - I was excited to try this place. What's that sidewalk sign say: GYRO, FRIES, SODA - $6. Their gyros can compete with some gyro shops in this town. The seasoning of the gyro meat could be improved but still a solid product. Fries with seasoning salt are great. Apple fritter was awesome. I love apple pie, fritter, etc. In this fritter, I could really taste the apple flavoring but no apple chunks which I'm indifferent about. Buckeye Donuts is a campus tradition. If you're from out of town coming in for a game, grad a breakfast sandwich and doughnut before heading to the 'shoe. Great place 24 hours a day with an terrifically diverse crowd. Type a place were regulars come in, grab there own coffee and the staff starts making them breakfast without a word being passed; where still drunk 20somethings stumble in at 3am for a gyro and doughnut' where college kids stop in for some study fuel, and where office workers grab a couple dozen for the office. The regulars range from lawyers, to students, to the homeless (seems like they look , after some of the locals, make sure they have a bite when they need one). You can feel the tradition in the place, a sense of community. It is slightly quirky but traditional a very "Columbus" type of place. Oh, and the doughnuts are damn good. This review might be a bit biased, because I'm not the biggest fan of donuts to begin with, but friends are always wanting to go here when we are near. The donuts are decent. The donuts were OK, but I don't think I'll bother coming down to campus just for Buckeye Donuts. I tried the following: Buckeye Donut: I thought it was very dry and disappointing Coconut Cake: Wonderful and my favorite, very flavorful! Devil's Food: Also dry, I was hoping it would be more rich and chocolaty! Sour Cream: Pretty good and I would get this again! MMMMMMMMM Donuts! Buckeye Donuts is one of those places on campus that remains an icon of deliciousness. The first time I saw Buckeye Donuts, I was on a bar crawl with my friends, and they tried to explain the wonder of this establishment. But, being inebriated, I decided I would have to come back and try it myself. Luckily, Buckeye Donuts is right near where I need to be on campus, so when I get there early I like to pop in for a breakfast-bite. However, if you get there too late, there isn't as big of a selection because the morning crowd has already come and gone. I am a big fan of their glazed donuts- they have a genuine home- made taste, the kind that you know is bad for you but you love anyways. Buckeye Donuts also serves other items, including breakfast sandwiches, lunch items, and they always have their specials out on a chalkboard in front. However, the building right next to Buckeye is going under construction and the sidewalk is closed. So, if you're coming from 18th street, you need to be on the campus side of High, and then cross over. Granted, the construction is frustrating, but the amazingness of the donuts make up for it! read more

This is an A-OK place if you're not going there for the donuts. I came in for tea and atmosphere, and I enjoyed a hummus plate while I was at it. The hummus was pretty average, but the pita bread was perfect and fluffy and warm. I never came here during the ridiculous number of years I was at OSU, but I'm glad I made time to try it now. The vintagey exterior gives way to the cutest petite little diner counter. I was there around noon on a Sunday, prime time for the hangover crowd, and I think I was the oldest person there by about 15 years the whole time, but unlike at some campus area establishments, it didn't feel odd at all. I had my book, my tea, my food. I considered giving the wifi a test run, but it was feeling a little cramped for whipping out a laptop, so I stuck to the paperback. I miss this place. I used to live eight blocks away--a huge contrast to my current location (2,000 miles away). I've gone to plenty of chains like Tim Horton's and Krispy Kreme, I commonly frequent the now-famous Voodoo Donuts (it's not my favorite donut shop in Portland, but it's open 24/7 and has a similar late-night vibe), I've checked out Honey Dip Donuts a few times in Columbus, I've made friends with the owners of my local donut shop, but nothing...NOTHING!!! has come close to Buckeye Donuts in my heart. There're so many special things about this small shop. It's one of the few places on campus that's open 24/7. The fifth donut is free (how can you beat that?). Their lunch is delicious. The late-night crowd is always entertaining to watch. Their cake donuts are top-notch. I always used to get: devil's food, peanut cake, stix/old fashioned/buttermilk, blueberry cake, and [mood of the day]. I haven't set foot in there for almost two years now and I still know this by heart. And then there was "that one day" that my roommate and I will never forget. We were pulling all-nighters for a final exam in December. He needed some coffee, so he trekked through the snow from SEL to hit up Buckeye Donuts (as in, it was still snowing). I decided to take a little nap and when I woke up, he was back with the most delicious donuts I've ever had. Mine was a fresh devils food, still warm despite enduring a long walk back to the library. I decided to check this place out after dinner to grab a few donuts. I was surprised to find this place open late. I live out of state so this was my first time here and, much to my surprise, the menu is far more extensive than just donuts. Had I known that, I might have considered eating here. I got two donuts. I'm probably not allowed to say anything against Buckeye Donuts -- it's a friggin' 40-year OSU tradition. Who am I to argue with four decades of students? Nobody, that's who. They've got gyros, seasoned fries, various fried junk foods, coffee and killer donuts. I've always been saddened by the absence of my personal favorite -- raspberry filled. The rest of the selection makes up for it, though. The interior of the place is rad. It's retro as all get out, and the counter usually has plenty of seating. Oh, and the place is open around the clock, which is always a good thing. I'm new to Columbus and understand that all things buckeye mean a lot to this town. But Buckeye Donuts didn't hit the spot. I walked in on a cold evening with my partner. We were both looking for a sweet something-something to soothe away the winter blues. I asked the rather annoyed-looking girl at the cash register which donut this shop was known for. She gave me a look that screamed "what a useless question." "They're all good," she retorted and threatened to walk away. Her response was flat out rude and unnecessary. I wondered if she an opinion or view about anything? Or was she just there to swipe our credit card and nothing more. We got a blueberry donut. It was grossly underwhelming and not worth the calories. So heavy but the taste was offensive. I'll be hard pressed to go again. It's not just the lack of customer service that makes me give this place two stars. It was the lack of craft and ingenuity. But hey, they were cheap.
