Reliable, satisfying, quick and cheap thrills to warm my lonely nights. If you're a semi-nocturnal urban critter like myself, I'm sure you would appreciate a solid hole in the wall joint that opens past 10 pm (as they close at 12 am every night). I'd usually get my food to go so I can trick myself into thinking that I'd walk off those massive burrito calories. In consideration of its menu selection, portion, location, and price, it's 4 stars within this bracket. You go in and order, pay next to nothing, sit in the corner, wait, eat, rinse and repeat. I'd often think not to expect any particularly awesome services when I'm paying that little for food, but some people may disagree. To sum up the food experience, I'd tend to think that their burritos are the best, then their tacos (ok), then their nachos (I've had a lot of better ones). You also get to tweak up your burritos such as dairy/no dairy, cabbage vs. lettuce, and the kind of wraps and beans, and add-ons. Note: If you're used to having Mexican food especially from the south of Canada's border, you may find the flavours here a bit held back and mild. I don't particularly think it's Budgie's fault as much as it having to do our general NW Coast cuisine that is afraid to slap us on the face with spice. read more

Love veggie burritos, and love that this place exists. However, I've always been disappointed with the food. Ordered a take out burrito recently, and after a 10 minute bike ride home on a warm night, was disappointed to a cold burrito when I arrived home. Yum! Picked up a couple burritos to go last night on my way home from a meeting and the smell emanating from the burritos almost led me to ripping one open and devouring it while driving. Which would have been bad. But, I made it home with burritos (and car) intact. I had never been in before, but I am so glad I stopped by. The burritos were made and handed to me (simply wrapped in tin foil, no other junk to have to dispose of later, thankfully) within a few minutes. Despite being made so fast they still tasted fresh and tasty when I got home. I ordered the Jame Dog burritos because the garlic potatoes sounded delish. And they were! I opted for hot salsa and black beans in mine. The smell of the chipotle was driving me mad, it was so good. I could have done with hotter salsa, but I'll just ask for more next time. Even the meat-loving man friend enjoyed his burrito! I noticed they have R&B beer on tap for $12 a pitcher. Say what? Wow. And their paper menu says they have Bard's for the gluten intolerant, though I didn't see any on display, so maybe they ran out. Next time I will eat in and get some R&B and try their soup. This is an interesting place! Very unique decor and the prices are excellent. You can get a burrito and drink for less than $10. I had the 10 inch poser. It was good. I don't know 'bout you kids out there but there's just something about a hippy hipster yelling my name and slapping a vegetarian burrito wrapped in tin foil that tugs at my heartstrings. Go figure. They make a mean burrito here and by mean, I mean so sinfully delicious that there's now way it's vegetarian but it is which in fact means you don't have to be riddled with guilt that an animal died for your carnivorous ways, you know what I mean? if tacky decor floats your boat, you've come to the right place. For those less inclined, you may think that sitting in a dim basement chomping on a messy burrito surrounded by pictures of naked velvety women doesn't sound too appealing, I say try it for kicks. You might be surprised. Personally, I think it enhances the flavour of my burrito. I like the Jamedog because it has garlic potatoes and who doesn't want more carbs in an already carbohydrate heavy meal? I also like the Henry. Now, it is very filling and for the price you pay, it's quite the deal in town. A Vegan gem of the city. For $6-$8 you get a damn solid burrito the size of a football that will leave you sleeping at your desk/couch/under the nearest park bench within minutes of consuming it. Atmosphere is really chill, a plethora of old black velvet painting on the walls give this place an old 70's basement feel. Minimal seating so if you are planning on coming by at lunch/dinner time either showing up a bit early or be prepared for take out or a bit of a wait. All the burrito's are vegetarian by default but you can swap out the dairy (sour cream, cheese, etc) for Guacamole for no extra cost, and who doesn't love guac?! I'm partial to 'The Poser' as I like the faux-ground beef, but I'd recommend trying anything on the menu, will definitely not disappoint. And they've got local brewery R&B on tap for $4.75 a pint, definitely one of the best prices you'll find in the area. Would recommend this place to anyone, vegetarian, vegan, or not. read more

I give these guys 5 stars for many reasons - most of which I don't want out in the public environment of The Interweb. I've showed up to their doors in various states, and I've never ever left without a smile. I'll always remember that these guys used to have a wall of I.O.U's, because they only accepted cash. Times have changed, and they accept plastics now, but their food hasn't - neither has their look, staff, service, or professionalism. These guys do vegetarian burritos. No matter what kind of eating habits I'm geared to - eating meat, vegan, whatever - I gravitate to these guys. For $8.00, I get 1.5 meals, and that makes me happy. They're consistent too. I can't fault them for anything really - what you see is what you get. Hell, maybe I'll buy a t-shirt one of these days. Let me start by disclosing that I am a major Mexican food snob. Having grown up in Southern California, I usually avoid Mexican food unless I'm in California or Mexico. Now I am not saying that Budgies offers the Mexican food that I so crave, but their burritos aren't half bad. You can order either a 10 inch or 12 inch burrito on a whole wheat or flour tortilla and either black or pinto beans and your choice of salsa. The hot salsa is, unfortunately, not very hot. If you want a fully vegan version of an item, they can make it for you that way. In addition to burritos, they also have tacos (both hard and soft shell), quesadillas, and nachos. I had the Jame Dog burrito, made with garlic roasted potatoes. The dining area downstairs deserves a mention. It reminded me of someone's basement with it's low ceilings and multiple velvet paintings of Jesus, Elvis, and praying children. read more

The chefs need to use a little creativity in order to make interesting, flavourful dishes that entice veggies and non-veggies alike. Budgies Burritos does just that, and with pizazz! This is terrible. The burritos are completely flavourless. When did it become a thing to put lettuce in a burrito? The hot oil and sauces they have are nice, but it's sad that you have to coat your food in other flavours for it to taste acceptable. The tofu inside was nice, but it still didn't taste like anything. I eat a lot of tofu, and just because it's tofu doesn't mean you should actively try to keep it flavourless. The worst, though, is that we paid $6 for a quesadilla that was the dryest, most unfulfilling quesadilla I've ever had in my life. There was probably $.25 worth of cheese on this thing. Well shit. Whilst enjoying this amazing burrito - yes, AMAZING burrito, I found myself lost in all of the missed burrito opportunities over the years. How have I not been here until now?! I can't remember what the hell I even had. It was tofu/tofurkey free and just jammed with a lot of veg and guac and I asked for cilantro whiiiich pretty much makes me a genius. Budgies makes a solid Burrito - they use La Costeña sauce (when you ask for green sauce) which is one of the better popular brands people actually buy in Mexico. Their flour tortillas are solid, and their re-fried beans taste great (although a bit short of the original, artery-clogging goodness). The Mr. Jones' burrito is by far my favorite and I'd recommend it to anyone looking for something mildly spicy (its got Jalapeños in it). Price-Quantity ratio is excellent - often you can do without dinner if you get a big Budgies for lunch. The four stars are basically due to their small menu and the somewhat long wait you must endure to get your burrito. I realize its not precisely fast food, but its pretty close. My favourite go-to spot in Mount Pleasant! Portions sometimes vary but the quality of the ingredients are always fresh! Their guac is absolutely perfect in consistency (coming from an avocado fanatic). My favourite is their Poser, veganized in a bowl. **3.5 stars** This is one of my quick post workout go-tos. I feel like I'm in a San Diego dive restaurant with its uneven flooring and benches and creepy artwork but somehow it all works. It literally is a hole-in-the-wall. I really enjoy the Blair Stanley with the tofu and a bit of spice. It's not as mushy as the Johnny-O but I have a soft spot for this too. If you're undecided about the beans, just get half and half! At these prices you can afford to have a beer with your burrito and they feature good local beer on tap. I used to go here often with an old flame. We'd pick the quiet times and devour one of their tasty, filling burritos with gusto. No complaints about the size and value. When you look at the meagre morsel you would get for the same price in Wholefoods, it's a no brainer. However, having to wait for an hour is just dumb. Maybe I was dumb for waiting. But once you've placed your order and waited 20 mins you've gone past the point of no return. Plus I bumped into some friends in the queue which passed the time. The frustrating thing was seeing the kitchen folks just going at their own pace with no sense of urgency. I appreciate that space is limited and perhaps logistics are not ideal but there has to be some way to streamline a bit and get hungry lunchtime burrito lovers fed. At least advise of possible wait time and give the option to wander off for a coffee if they know it's going to take so long to complete the order. Sigh. read more

I get the Blair Stanley and my boyfriend gets the Johnny O and we've never been able to stay away for too long because the cravings get too strong.
