I've been going to Bud's once a week, every week, since 2006. Shave it down to 40 weeks a year that's still a total of 320 sandwiches for this kid. Additionally I'm normally picking up for at least 4 other people who share my deepest addiction. Bud's roasts their own meats which are still hot when they hit the deli slicer. As most folks mention the portions are fantastic for the money and I normally skip breakfast on Thursdays in anticipation of a killer lunch. Standard sandwich comes with mayo, mustard, lettuce, tomato and onions. You've got to ask for cheese (Swiss, Provolone, Pepper Jack and Cheddar) and they've also got pickles, jalapenos, horseradish and spicy mayo for which you also need to ask. The onion rings are very good but you'll want to shout your fried orders to the third guy behind the counter before you've even ordered your sandwich. They have a single serving fryer which will take a few minutes to prepare your batch. The following sandwiches are the most popular with my crew and the Diablo is the hands down favorite. Pastrami Diablo (Spicy Mayo, Pepper Jack Cheese, Jalapenos) French Dip Roast Beef and Provolone Ham and Swiss Roast Pork and Swiss The two guy who slice the meat and build the sandwiches provide a very high level of service and they'll even remember your regular order. Show up before 11:30 AM if you don't like to wait. I would say, however, that even if you come in at 12:00 PM and the line is wrapped around the inside it still moves pretty quickly. Seating, though, will be a problem. There isn't an eatery in Sacramento that I would recommend higher. Enjoy my friends. P.S. Let's look at the following phrase: All-you-can-eat buffet See how the word "buffet" is separate from "All-you-can-eat"? Exactly! Carnivirous fun for the whole family! Took our baby boy to meet my wife at Bud's Buffet for lunch. We missed the lunchtime crowd. Bud's has a cafeteria feel to it. They also have carvers! I ordered the infamous french dip. The guy carved it up and placed it on a delicious roll. The roll was soft and delicious. The roast beef was peppery and flavorful. That's all you need. After a long day serving as juror #1, I was starving for some lunch so I walked over to Buds to try one of their highly rated sandwiches. Walking inside the ceilings are low, the tables and chairs reminded me of something you will see in a bingo hall...but the food is what brings you in, not the decor. I was lucky to get there right before the lunch rush, as the line soon extended out the door as the clock ticked five minutes past 12. Waiting in line I knew exactly what I was going to order...the pastrami....after reading yelp review after review...it seemed like the sandwich to eat here. You grab a tray like you're back in elementary school, and yell out your order to the man behind the counter. You can't help but stand on you toes to see them slice your pastrami fresh and place it on the bread. They also have plenty of sides but I decided on the mashed potatoes and gravy...two large scoops of potatoes into a styrofoam cup and drowned with brown gravy. After grabbing all my food and placing it on my tray, you walk over to the register, pay, then look feverishly for a seat so you can attack your lunch. The sandwich was big, a lot bigger than expected. The pastrami was lean and not overly fatty...very well seasoned without tasting too salty. The mash potatoes were smooth and creamy, and very hot....but the temperature didn't stop me from eating half of it. I left full and with half my lunch remaining. read more

I've been wanting to try this place for years and years and years but due to the closing time of 3 PM it makes it hard. Everyone I've talked to about this place has told me to get the roast beef dip and how magical the meat is. Hmmmm I don't know what they were smoking but I need some of it. I found the roast beef a tad bit dry and bland. I'm used to roast beef being a tad bit pink and unfortunately the meat on my roast beef dip was overcooked and in my opinion not really tasty at all. My side of mashed potatoes was decent and the gravy on top was legit (the same gravy that's given to you with the roast beef dip sando). The people at the counter were helpful but overall I feel the roast beef dip sando here is overrated. IF I come back (not likely) it's to try the pastrami or corned beef sando. read more

Great Caesar's Ghost! How come I have not reviewed this place yet, and have a 'sandwiches' list posted? I have referred to my serious condition that I suffer from occasionally called "bottomless pit stomach syndrome," which can be very unfortunate towards my wallet and my diet. I came to Bud's Buffet one day when I heard that the sandwiches were great and capitulated to my "condition" once again. Upon entering Bud's buffet for the first time, I was slightly confused. "Is this some kind of 70's cafeteria?", "Who is that hairy man holding big hunks of meat?", "Is this the same place I've been reading about? Hold on, let me walk outside and check the sign over the door to make sure I'm in the right place". Sure enough, yes, this is indeed Bud's Buffet. Once you get over the interior and initial confusion, and make your way to the counter, you will finally understand what all the hype is about. So you order your sandwich, said hairy man takes the hunk of meat out from under the heating lamp and just starts carving away at it for what seems to be eternity. For a moment there you think he's just about done. Oh no? Ohh he was just taking a break to rest his arm. Okay he's back at it again, with the carving. All you see on your plate at this point is about 8 lbs of meat. He asks you what kind of cheese you want, you tell him, provolone. He carves a couple dainty slices, plops them on the mountain of meat, and the cheese immediately starts melting right there. All the toppings are standard, and eventually your sandwich is done. Tastes... incredible. The bread surprisingly holds itself together pretty well. Needless to say, my condition was fulfilled in it's entirety. I am impressed! read more

Bud's is a great place if you want a fresh, meaty sandwich. I usually go with the Roast beef (go for au jus instead of mayo/mustard, you won't regret it), and they slice your roast beef fresh right in front of you and pile it on your sub. I also sometimes get the Hero, which is turkey, ham, and salami. It's a little pricey but you pay for the quality (and quantity) you get. Sandwiches run around $8, and I'm always full when I finish! Lines can get long around the lunch rush, so I would recommend going at 11:30 or 12:30 instead of right at noon. Staff is friendly and service is quick, so even if there's a decent line it doesn't take long to work your way through it. If you're in the neighborhood, you have to stop by and give it a try. The review before me literally took the words straight out of my mouth. Ditto on the mashed potatoes and the gravy. I order that every time I am there. This is also another place where you're bound to bump into someone you know. The line gets long at noon and extends all the way around the restaurant in a shape of a "U". But the line moves rather quickly as it is a buffet. And waiting in line never gets boring because all you have to do is turn to the opposite direction and you'll notice a friend standing in line right behind you! So you say hi and make a little small talk, which makes time go by fast faster. Make a little small talk to those who are already seated chowing down their meal. If you're standing near the entrance, you will most likely see yet another person you know entering the restaurant. This place seriously feels like a reunion. Not to sound sexist, but I usually see a lot of men dining at this place. Originally I thought it must be the buffet's daily serving of carved roasted meat for men to boost their testosterone levels? *shrugs shoulders* Or maybe the place is actually that good and that it also reminds one of a traditional home-cooked meal. Roast Beef Sandwich Group of officers That's what I call a good lunch joint where one can grab their large meat-packed sandwich warm and enjoy looking at a bunch of men in uniform. Apparently, I've now made it pretty obvious I have a thing for our law enforcement in blue. The real reason why we stopped by was because a "closed" sign was hanging forlornly on the window at Bonne Soup, which after years/months/weeks of missing, I had finally been able to make it to the 916 just for the experience. So, we ended up at Bud's. Here is a quick run on my experience, an order to-go. Bud's is run like a cafeteria style with bench tables and plastic chairs. I don't doubt that 99% of the people in here today were mostly State employees and since it was a Friday, everyone was casual and high spirits. This included my joking a bit with the customer next to me. He was ordering two large orders and said he was not from the area and was filling up on his faves. The line wrapped around to the other side and I'm standing there, slightly impatient because I was lucky enough to locate a 30 minute meter (all the 1 hour meters were taken up due to the lunch hour rush) so you can imagine, this mad race with the DPT devils. I ordered the Roast Beef Sandwich and would recommend stating to stick with the meats they actually roast on the premise: roast beef, pastrami, corned beef. They also have ham and turkey, but I don't think those items are roasted on site. The standard roll is a typical 6 inches, so I'd order that because honestly, I'm a pig and a 3-inch sandwich is not going to do anything other than curb my appetite for 15 minutes. They stack the sandwich with shredded lettuce, two slices of tomato, and a slice of red onions. The meat is actually sliced in front of you by machine and the steam is as tantalizing. Imagine Pavlov's conditioning theory hard at work. Down the line, you have to option of picking up your soft drinks and then it is down to the register, where the cashier is quick and if you are a to-go item, she bags the items for you. My sandwich had so much warm roast beef, I had issues opening my mouth for a bite. Not to mention, the tenderness of the meat. Pretty cool and I'm impressed. The employees who are lucky to be so close to a decent joint, I'm jealous. Now, in regards to my entitlement to the label "pig" I'm off tonight to test out the crab legs at Mizu. Don't deviate from the norm, that's what I told a friend when we had lunch at this place. I told him this is a Meat and Potatoes restaurant so don't order anything different and out of the ordinary...of course the stubborn man had to digress and now his opinion of this place is bad...(he ordered some bbq beef - sloppy joe's and hated it) This place is great great for Pastrami, mashed, and Roast Beef. Always packed at lunch time so be here at 11am, any later good luck finding a seat. Holy Cheeez n crackers, this is not what I was expecting! Judging from the name of the joint, I was expecting an actual buffet- as in all-you-can-eat. So you can imagine my surprise walking in and finding out that this wasn't the case. But even so, just a sandwich and lower in price than expected, considering what was delivered. As I stood in line, I watched person after person walk by with trays overflowing with food. Sandwiches, gravy-covered mashed potatoes, bowls of stew, cole slaw, and so on. "Hey" I thought, "perhaps this isn't so bad. So I reached my turn to order, a BBQ sandwich with nothing less than onions, which was prepared and delivered to me in less than 10 seconds. The problem was, no side-orders. WHAT THE HELL?!?!?!!?!? But then, my brain seized control from my stomach, reminding to "LOOK AT THE SIZE OF THE SANDWICH YOU MORON!!!" which I promptly did. And lo and behold, I saw a feast like no other. One that I wondered if I would actually finish. So much so, it required a knife and fork to eat- but not very neat. I walked out proudly, a full stomach and sauce call over my face. Some looked at me with puzzled looks. Others gave me a look of "I know where you just were, and I've been there as well." Knowing what to expect, I wandered next door to the coffee shop, ordered a double-espresso and took a nap on the nearest couch, until the staff delivered my caffine counter-active to "the-itis". A warning though, this is not a vegan-friendly place. So much so, that the patrons may grab you, throw you into the roast and demand you served up on a fresh Colombo roll. Don't believe me, just check it out for yourself- if you dare. My only complaint: they are only open mon-fri, 11-3. So if you don't work nearby or have non-standard work-hours, you're out of luck. Rarely do I look at my food and become rapidly intimated. Yet, as I stared at the enormous mound of freshly cut, fragrant meat atop a fluffy bed of lettuce and tomato, sandwiched between the two pieces of a French roll, that's exactly what happened. I didn't know what to do. Did I pick the whole thing up and cram it into my mouth, maybe precipitating a slide of potentially catastrophic proportions as the meat squirted out the side? Did I nibble at the edges delicately, avoiding the mountain in the middle? What to do, oh what to do? However, I couldn't let a mere sandwich defeat me. I picked it up and elected to go for the shoving everything into my mouth route, backed up by the quick flipping of the sandwich to catch anything that might drop off the sides method. I am happy to report that this method worked like a charm. And the sandwich was delicious. Bud's Buffet roasts their own meat and it was nice to know that the meat tasted as good as the place smelled. You don't go to Bud's for the decor. If you like French dip sandwiches, this is the place for you. The best French dip I've ever had. I always get roast beef and corned beef on a roll with the gravy/au jus. A side of mashed potatoes and a drink and you're all set. The au jus is peppery and flavorful. The meats are sliced thin and delicious. The potatoes are...well, it's hard to mess up mashed potatoes, so they're legit too. A definite place to stop if you're hungry, as the portions are huge and they food is delish. read more

Places like this were very common in the 60's, and this old relic offers tasty and reliable dishes from that era, plus a lot more. Prices have gone up, but a lot is given. The dipped roast beef is nearly as good as that at Joe's Buffet in Fairfield, the paragon of such for me. Bud's should get a set of defibulator paddles on the wall. I'm just waiting for a cardiac arrest to happen while waiting in line for a tower of meat sandwich that this place serves up. I mean, just looking around at the clientele makes me almost want to have a coronary. If they opened up a heart surgery clinic next door, they'd make bank. These people SHOULD NOT EAT THERE. However, they are no doubt in the same trap as I am: the meat is so freakin' GOOD!!! The hofbrau-style roasted meats are really the draw to this palce, but they also serve up blue plates, one of which is always the daily special. Meatloaf is regualrly on the menu. Sides, like the mac n chees, are tasty, as is the mashed potatos and gravy. Lately, the sandwich special ($6.95 with a side and a drink) has been the mystery meat menagery in BBQ sauce. I haven't tried it yet, but I noticed plenty of the bubble-butts in there chowing down seem to appreciate it. Of course, they'd probably appreciate anything in volume. Just keep your hands aways from their mouths while you are waiting in the line that usually wraps around the eating tables. I, as with other reviewers on here, do the pastrami, piled high on a sourdough bun with a heap of horseraddish and all the way on the lettuce, onion, tomato with mayo and spicy mustard. Do not, under any circumstances, go to Buds if you are on a diet, concerned about your health, are a vegetarian, or have a family history of heart disease. That being said, this place is amazing. The sandwiches are as big as your face and enough for two or three meals. The lines are long at lunchtime, but move quickly in this hauf brau/cafeteria style setting. Every sandwich has a huge amount of meat that it puts all your silly little subways to shame. This is one of those places that I'll only allow myself to indulge in MAYBE once a year, but it's completely worth it every time. I highly recommend the pastrami or the roast beef sandwich. Ask for the gravy on the side to dip au jus, otherwise your sandwich will be even more impossible to eat than it already is. I'm not visiting the family in Sac for another month and I'm already thinking of going back to buds when I get home. I ran across the street, leaving my car dangerously parked at an "out of order" parking meter, just five minutes before Bud's closing time, wondering how stupid I was being for risking a ticket and for ordering food from a joint that was about to close. Was there a $35 ticket and a nazty sammich in my near future? To attest to Bud's supreme awesomeness the service was super friendly, meaty, and got me back to my car before the city's henchpersons could extort money from me. ...and my pastrami sandwich lived up to the reputation! Plenty of tasty meat piled high on some good bread with similarly tasty fixn's. I could have ravenously eaten the whole thing, but ate only half since I was going to the gym for a Stair(urp)Master workout. I happily gobbled down the other half later on for dinner, after marinating it in my car for a few hours, and it tasted even better than before. I'm sold on Bud's for sure. read more

Bud's is one of those places that is preserved in amber. I remember delis and cafeterias like this in the 70s/80s so this place def will tug on your sense of nostalgia. This is a no-nonsense place to get a salad/sandwich/lunch special in a grab-a-tray, wait-in-line style joint. They do have a carving station for sandwiches and such like an old school hof brau. The pastrami sandwich here is decent as is the Bud's Sub (which has pepperoni in it which is old school too). This place gets slammed from noon to 1pm due to the State workers so be aware. They do not make places like this anymore, nor will they start making like this again, for better or worse. Come for the old school service, stay for that smell of 1,000 pastrami sandwiches being made over the years. Places like Bud's are slowly becoming extinct so visit them when you get the chance, especially if they are decent. read more

I've been going to Bud's for years!!! Sad to say that Bud is no longer with us but his legacy lives on... My all time favorite sandwich is the Roast Beef "French Dip". They dip the bread in the Au Jus (which is like a light gravy). I get it with a little mayo & lettuce also. I then ask for a side of gravy on the side. It is delish! Not a place you want to go if your on a diet! I have never been able to eat the entire sandwich in one sitting. They also have other awesome sandwiches if Roast Beef is not your thing. Other options are the Ham, Corned Beef, Pastrami, etc... The Pastrami is lean and not fatty but it is still very tasty. They also have daily specials but to be honest I always get a sandwich with maybe a side of fries or mash & gravy. A tip is to go early or late because a line starts to form. They are quick but if you want to eat there I suggest you go early. You go through a line like cafeteria style and pay at the end. There is only street parking but there is a parking lot on the same block. This is definitely a go to for a BIG MEATY SANDWICH!!! read more

My Dad, Uncle and cousins talk about this place all the time. So on my lunch break during Jury Duty, I eventually made my way over there with the rest of the state workers. Just looking at the mountain of meat made me smile (hehe, that's what she said). I ate half of the sandwich not because I didn't want to finish the whole thing in one sitting... but because of the fact that I probably would've cried after taking my last bite. After deliberating in a cramped room for hours after my first encounter with Big Bud, I accidentally left my sandwich in the deliberation room! I ran back into the courthouse, went through security, ran up the stairs (ok, I lied, I took the elevator), stood in an awkward silence in the elevator with the defense lawyer and her client (whose fate was in mine & 11 other people's hands), knocked on department 20 frantically looking for the bailiff... BUT THE DOOR WAS LOCKED! Saddened, I turned around and there was our bailiff, walking down the hall. I swear, I saw a halo around her head. I told her that I had left my lunch behind & I couldn't leave without it. I explained to her that it was a special sandwich and she just said.. "Okay." Then I proceeded to tell her that the sandwich was from Bud's and she instantly stood up and said "OMG, let's go!" I've been trying to keep it as legit as possible with my star ratings lately, it's called integrity, but there is no way this place isn't getting a 5 spot. I toyed with the idea of the three word review 'Go to Bud's,' but the sugar free rockstar is kicking in and i feel like gettin a bit wordier. It's right downtown, bit of an inconspicuous sign, but simple can speak loudly once you've tried the goods. The line gets awfully long sometimes, but it moves with a quiet swiftness. Besides, what does it say about a restaurant who's patrons are willing to exchange valuable lunch hour minutes for their delectable sandwiches and sides? Also, in case you were wondering, it's not in fact a buffet, it's a deli. No biggie. Then it's your time to order, you've had sufficient time to analyze the menu, so please don't drop the ball. let me make it even easier for you, have the pastrami sandwich. It is UNBELIEVABLE. check my other reviews, i'm not an all caps kind of guy, so give that statement added weight. The main man on the slicer, sticks the butcher's fork into the slab of pastrami and slices it right into his gloved hand right before your very eyes. If these things are important to you, not 'important' like parking tickets and matching your shoes with your belt, but 'important' like toilet paper and brushing your teth, then Bud's Buffet is for you. I first started eating here 10 years ago, when the family patriarch, Bud, manned the meat slicer when he was not smoking cigs just outside the front door. Bud, God rest his soul, passed on a few years later, but the Buffet is now run by the rest of his family, who have more than ably continued the tradition of mountanious meaty sandwiches. Do not go here if you are looking for anything light, or expecting vegetables beyond the odd condiment. Go here today if you like meat roasted that day piled between two halves of a Colombo roll. Advise your coworkers before you go that you will be spending the balance of the afternoon napping or mumbing under your breath when they ask for things, regardless of importance. I recommend the Roast Beef (ask for a rare cut if you like it bloody), Pastrami (w/Provolone), and the Lasagne on Tuesday and Friday is a formidable combination of ground beef, mozzarella cheese, and tomato sauce. I may have the met the sandwich of my life here: the roast beef sandwich with au jus! If for the rest of my life, I only could eat one sandwich. It would be... the roast beef with au jus. I do! You have to specify you want it au jus because they don't give it to you automatically. The au jus makes the delicious, juicy roast beef sandwich EVEN MORE BETTER. Your fingers and breathe will have a lingering smell of roast beef sandwich for the rest of the day, so if you have any important engagements afterwards, this might not be the best spot for lunch. read more

Yum yum. You remember those meatatarian commercials they used to have? That lifestyle choice is fully well and alive here. The name is a bit misleading, it is not an all you can eat buffet, but you will quickly realize it does not need to be one for the servings you will receive here. The decor is a little off for me (feels like a furniture store they just cleared out) and there's little in the way of service as you just pick up your food in a cafeteria style line. But that's not why you're coming here. You heard about the mounds of meat you're going to get on your sandwich right? The stories are all true. You can ask for any kind of meat on your sandwich, whereupon they will slice you so many pieces you'll want to say "when". Half sandwiches are more than enough for most people, those super hungry can go for a full and enjoy the food coma later. This family restaurant serves the best beef sandwiches in Sacramento. The massive rounds of beef are gloriously fresh, hot and rare, and sliced right in front of you. Then, as you watch, the carver (who looks a little more like his late father every day, and makes you remember what a pleasure it was to see him at work) loads a giant pastrami onto the slicer, and you start thinking you should have ordered that. The same thing happens when you see the corned beef hauled into carving position... Everything is fresh and appetizing. The portions are huge. These may be the only sandwiches downtown that are a value for the prices charged for sandwiches these days. Bud's isn't a diet spot. They do meat and gravy and bread, and soup so rich, you wonder if "soup" is a sturdy enough name for it. And, it might be the safest spot in town. On our way home from the Farmers Market my boyfriend and I wanted to grab a quick lunch. After deciding we'd just get a hot dog, my boyfriend suddenly remembered a restaurant he hadn't been to in a few years but remembered that they had the best sandwiches. He warned me it was a "no frills" kind of place but the meat was good. If anything we could just take a look and if we didn't like it we would just get the hot dog. We walked in around 1 P.M. on a Thursday and this place was packed--with all walks of life. Suits, uniforms and casually dressed people. Not an empty table! A good sign. We went with the rueben sandwich with mashed potatoes. $7.50 for a huge sandwich--easily large enough to split, and $1.50 for a big bowl of mashed potatoes and gravy. Again, easily large enough to split. The meat was sliced right there, as we ordered and it was DELICIOUS. The gravy on the potatoes was also very good. I will say...the spaghetti looked...gross, to say the least and as others have mentioned. But the meat. So good. Fast forward 45 minutes. I decided to try this shop and was pleasantly surprised. I had a Hero Sandwich, which was enough to feed 2 people. However shortly after I ordered I wished I had tried the pastrami or the roast beef as I noticed that there was fresh meat waiting to be sliced. The bread was soft and airy which didn't make the sandwich heavy. I just had the sandwich, no sides and it was more than enough to fill me up until well past dinner time. Next time I'm near the Capitol, I might pop in again and try a pastrami sandwich. read more

This place is boppin' at lunch. If you want to be around men, and I mean real men, want meat and potatoes only, and don't have cash to blow, this is the place to be. The portions are huge, you can buy beer, and for Christ's sake you can LIVE for once in your life. This is definitely a dude's hangout. I don't really see women that often. About 20% of these dudes are cops. They do not discriminate against people without souls, so if you do not have one, do not worry. You will be good. The place could use some art. Great sandwiches with fresh sliced meats. Several choices of sandwiches with a good variety of sides. The fries were thin, crunchy and yummy!! I am a fan of thin fries and was please with how they prepared them. They have standard toppings for their sandwiches (lettuce, pickles, onion, tomato, etc). Soda is coke (a plus for me). I had a Ruben which was good. Sauerkraut was your basic sauerkraut. The only reason I did not give 5stars is because the rye bread ended up being a little "mushy". Maybe due to the liquid in the kraut or perhaps the amount of mustard (they went a little high on mustard). Bread is important to me on sandwiches so I felt I needed to dock a star. Overall this is a great place for lunch. Service was fast. You walk through a line to place your order Of meats, then toppings and sides (similar to subway). I will definitely be back! read more

Get the Pastrami sandwich. That should end the review right there, but I will add a little detail. Its a very blue collar worker type establishment. You walk in, order your food from some chefs that look like they are out of a 80's Rocky movie, they put it on a plate, and you pay. Seat yourself, enjoy, and leave. There is no waiters, its no non-sense. I have only gotten the different sandwiches there during lunch and they are absolutely huge, no skimping at all on the serving size.
