Great little place tucked in the alleyway in downtown Amherst. You order food and then go sit down and eat. They got my order wrong. I got a Bowl when I asked for a burrito but I didn't complain. The Bowl turned out to be really good. We got the Buffalo chicken bowl and Thai burrito which came out as a Bowl. Chips and guacamole are super cheap!!!! And very good. Choice of salsas all very good to try. Overall nice little place if you are into Mexican. Food is definitely good. read more

If you're looking for non-authentic, bland Mexican food with cheap ingredients - this is the place. I ordered some tacos which were served in a large flour tortilla wrapped like mini burritos. The pork was over cooked and dry and there wasn't much of it. The chicken tacos were bland and the vegetables just didn't taste fresh. My girlfriends burrito was poorly wrapped and fell apart while she tried to eat it. I'll give this place one more try at the end of summer, but for now - 2 stars! read more

I was in the area for a concert and found this place on Yelp. It did not disappoint!!!! The food was super fresh and delicious! My veggie bowl was only made better by the addition of the fresh salsa. My daughter also had a bowl with steak and said it was fantastic. Our friend had a pork quesadilla that looked amazing as well. It was small, but comfortable inside. Highly recommend this place!!!! I actually love this place. They serve a very tasty burrito. However, the last three times I've ordered burritos, the black beans have had many crunchy beans. Like nut crunchy. Not like break your tooth crunchy, just annoying under-cooked crunchy. I'm not sure if they salting the beans too soon, or if they are under-cooking them or if there is some other weird problem, but it's a bit like eating sushi with mushy rice, or pasta that is just a little less cooked than al dente. We always order the veggie (black bean) burrito and the beyond burrito. The beyond is amazing. The straight black bean is just a great, simple, burrito. But not when the beans are crunchy. I really hope they fix their bean problem because I want to get their burritos again. read more

Oh the love I have for this place. And the amount of money I've spent here. LOTS. In Amherst, Bueno Y Sano is a favorite. The Tex-Mex restaurant has plenty of delicious options made to order. I almost always got the same thing (if it ain't broke, don't fix it, right?) which was the salad bowl with their delicious chicken and brown rice. If you like Chipotle, you'll 100000% love Bueno. I did switch it up from time to time to order the pulled pork bowl or mixed grilled veggie bowl which comes with red pepper, zucchini, portobello, and onion. That soon became a personal favorite. Bueno Y Sano is conveniently located in the center of town and while there's usually always at least a few people in front of you (it's a popular spot), the service is quick. You order at the register and wait for your number to be called. I managed to go in 30 days after the birthday burrito arrived, because the day after the offer was set to expire. I order a burrito and pull up the app. I can't find the offer, and the apathetic teenager running the register couldn't care less. He was the least helpful customer service exchange I've had in... wow, years, and that's really pretty good, because he was just surly and didn't give a crap about his job. Phenomenal authentic Mexican food. I came back to my alma mater, UMass Amherst on the way home from a friend's wedding. Of all the places I decided to eat at (which there are many to go to like Lone Wolf, Fresh Side, Me Saigon, and others) This was it. It even improved on the salsa since 2013! For people who don't mind a serious kick in spice you simply must try the stuffed grilled jalapeños they are a tasty appetizer I always order here. The burritos are also good. Today I tried the salad bowl and it was good. What really makes Bueno y Sano shine is their salsa! Mm try their green salsa and their signature red one too. Dip the jalapeños in them. Drench your burritos in them. I know the founder - he is down-to-earth and a good person. A UMass lecturer in Isenburg for entrepreneurial activities, I took his class and had a beer or two with him! Feel satisfied shopping local is this place trumps Chipotle when you are in the area! Apparently there is one too now in NoHo This place I have eaten at about 50% of the time I was at UMass. I have lived in Amherst for almost 15 years and been to this place probably 3 times- and there is a reason for that! I gave it another try today after getting a burrito a couple of months ago that was inedibly disgusting. The steak burrito I ordered today (thinking how can you mess up a steak burrito? the last thing I got was more exotic) was bland and tasteless. Apparently no cheese/sour cream even though I asked for it. The meat itself was tasteless, chewy, and gristle-y. Some people may say this place is good...but those people are probably vegetarians and I have learned to never take restaurant advice from vegetarians. This is the perfect example why. Bueno y Sano has so many little flaws that it is almost funny how it succeeds. First, the kitchen is run with apparently no order. Your order can take anywhere from a few minutes to a half hour to be ready. The food is just bland. While you're eating you might think..."where have I tasted this before?"...and then you realize that you had it when you were completely broke (and probably drunk and/or high) and decided to cook up a can of beans and some rice and throw it on a stale tortilla that has been sitting in your fridge since your last roommate moved out. The food is poor people food, sold as cuisine, which barely makes it into the "under $10" category. You will end up spending just under $10 bucks for a meal that would cost you under 50 cents to make. Salt? Pepper? Any seasoning whatsoever? NOPE. Bueno has not heard of such witchcraft. But their beans are perfectly undercooked and strangely hard every time...consistently!!! The food has absolutely no connection with mexico or any latin country. It is just a second hand version which was concocted by some white Eastern Mass business major. Go to Veracruzana if you really need some mexican food. Although it's not the best, at least it has flavor and a semblance of authenticity. Also, their doors open inwards which is against Massachusetts state law!!! I can't attest to how healthy the food really is being that you are still being served iceberg lettuce, processed cheese, canned beans, etc, but I'd like to think that it's possible to for healthy food not to be bland, boring, and pathetic. Unfortunately Bueno y Sano is the epitome of that stereotype. The flavors don't melt together. Everything tastes cold. Maybe by healthy they mean not overloaded with sodium by which they mean no salt or seasoning at all? While it is possible to sit to dine, there is little seating and so I reccomend this as a takeout and a "If-I-have-ramen-again-I-will-have-a-heart-attack-and-die" sort of place. It also helps if you don't think of it as a Mexican place but a vaguely Mexican inspired place, or a place where they put flavorless things into the shape of Mexican food. Its one saving grace is that you get a 2lb burrito to put into your face for a few dollars. As a college student with loans worth more than my life, I'm glad I have this place as an option, but I will pine for Anna's and Felipe's and Pedro's and El Pelon with every bite as I eat my burrito in shame. read more

Along with Anna's Taqueria (which I believe is only in/near Boston), this is my favorite fast Mexican place in Massachusetts. "Bueno y Sano" translates to "Good and Healthy". I don't know if it's actually very healthy, but I used that as justification to go here whenever I didn't feel like cooking while I was at UMass. Pretty much every time I go here, I get the BBQ chicken burrito. I don't know what type of BBQ sauce they're using (homemade maybe?), but it makes the burrito taste amazing, and very unique (I've never found a place that can duplicate it). Overall, I like Anna's steak burrito more than Bueno's steak burrito, but Anna's has nothing like the BBQ chicken burrito, and until they do, Bueno will always hold that winning card. Bueno y Sano also has really good salsa. I'm pretty sure they make it from scratch, because the vegetables don't look processed, and it's very different from the salsa you get in supermarkets. The place itself has a good atmosphere. I wouldn't bring someone on a date here or anything, but it's a nice place to sit after class when you're hungry. I would literally drive nearly two hours on weekends just to get my Bueno y Sano fix. The portions are awesome. A grande burrito is about the size of a small baby. I recommend the steak burrito with extra cheese and a side of guac. Bueno's has - bar none - the best guac I've ever encountered. A good game to try when you go there - order a burrito with a friend and see who can eat while creating the least mess, it's a challenge but you'll get it, just practice. They've always got this cool Latin music in there, which is dangerous, because after repeated Bueno sessions, said music may induce a Pavlovian response and result in unseemly salivation. Even the bathroom is fun. The walls are chalkboard so you can graffiti to your heart's content without actually committing vandalism. read more

The DEFINITIVE burrito destination in Amherst. The classic fillings are unbelievably fresh, and they're always adding more new treats (like pulled pork... Mmmmm.). Fat Tuesday deal is worth a special trip, the burrito size upgrades from "small dog" to "that's like carrying a baby." And if you don't feel like stuffing your face, there's delicious quesadillas, stuffed peppers, and a wealthy array of veggie options (it is western mass, lots of veggiers around). I was scolded by wife, received a nasty voice message from a friend and an angry text from both my sister and brother because I wrote a negative YELP review for Buenos. They love Buenos. Also the owner (I think it was the owner) wrote a gracious response to my review. So gracious for that matter, I felt like a douchebag after I read his response. My wife yelled at me. She said "What do you know about Salvadoran food?" and called me a less than flattering name which also means "two shooter." In my defense, growing up in South Florida, I was exposed to excellent, authentic Mexican and Guatemalan food sold from road stands, street carts, taquerias and food trucks. The food truck thing has been down here for decades in Indiantown, Belle Glade and Pahokee. For a few dollars - amazing tacos, rellenos, burritos, tamales, etc. always served with lime wedges and sliced radishes with plenty of Valentina hot sauce and a icy cooler full of Jarritos sodas (tamarind flavor is the best). So this is what I thought a burrito or a taco was suppose to be. Upon my arrival in Massachusetts, specifically Amherst, it was different, much different than what I had grown accustomed to. I will not change my initial review which is still below but I am adding this prologue of sorts to appease my friends, family and wife. All were inexpensive, I understood that but I could never understand how on earth Buenos could be described as good. I also understood the background story that kids loved - college student decides to open a burrito shop while still attending class. A local folk hero of sorts. Awesome but that doesn't change dry, unseasoned beans and rice. Cheap does not mean delicious and it was not that cheap either. $5.00 for dry rice and beans wrapped in a dry flour tortilla? Want anything else? Then you pay extra. Yes it was huge and you will have plenty to eat later but what you have to look forward to is still dry beans and rice. Then again, most of the students who loved Buenos thought Ramen noodles were yummy, smoked way too much weed, spent their spare time sitting in the grass on the East side of the Student Union smoking American Spirits and regurgitating whatever nonsense they heard in a Sut Jhally class. After returning to Umass for a visit with friends, I was disappointed that several of my party wanted to go to Buenos. We ordered to go and walked to the fountain. As my friends began to eat, it was sad to see the look of disappointment cross their faces. Some things should be left as memory. My friend who was also the most excited of our group to return said "This is gross. It has no flavor." To which I responded "It never did!" One star for nostalgia and quaint hidden location. With said variety, it's possible to visit Bueno y Sano hundreds of times and still get something you've never gotten before that won't break your wallet. Not even close to authentically Mexican, or even authentically Californian Mexican, Bueno y Sano (good and healthy) is pretty good for what it is - healthy-ish white-folks style "burritos" in a New England college town. My biggest complaint is that the menu is so a la carte, a basic burrito seems cheap, but when you want to add meat and a veggie, all of a sudden you have a $8 burrito. That aint right. My favorite strategy there is to order a burrito with black beans, sour cream, medium hot sauce, and sauteed spinach and garlic SIN LECHUGA (no lettuce). Why the hell they add lettuce to the burritos is beyond me, it's terrible, and especially when it mixes with the spinach. When I forget to ask them to leave it out, I kick myself and hate this place. Less authentic than the competition (La Veracruzana, basically) but still pretty much the best burrito I've had in the Pioneer Valley. Which is a dubious honor, akin perhaps to the best sushi in Wyoming, or something like that. You know what they (the less PC than me people) say about the Special Olympics - "Even when you win, you're still retarded."? That's kinda how I feel about Bueno. Still, I'll be back. read more

BEST BURRITO IN AMHERST. Pay the extra few cents to get guacamole slathered on. You won't regret it. I usually get 2 or 3 little plastic containers of spicy sauce to pour on top of my burrito. So. We were able to order right away and our food took mere minutes to prepare. After we sat with our food, the place filled up FAST with tons of college-aged kids and a few families looking for good, Mexican food. Portions at Bueno y Sano are HUGE and the food is fresh. I had a burrito with chicken, spinach, and garlic, and my brother had a chicken quesadilla. We both had bottled teas/lemonades. Neither of us was still hungry after we finished our food!
