I've tried to like this chain, really, I have. It pains me to think negatively of any burrito, no matter the source. But I honestly can't understand the hype about this place, or any of it's other locations. Perhaps I've just been blessed to have grown in up a great restaurant city, but of the 4 times I've been here, every time I feel like I've been served bland, unseasoned, burrito. Yes, you kinda season your meats (usually), but you also have to put some kind of effort into the other stuff that goes into the meal. Opening a can doesn't qualify as "effort." Stop! If You Want Traditional Mexican Do Not go to Bueno y Sano! This should really be called a "wrap" shop with Mexican options. It is not in any way a Mexican restaurant. I am being generous giving them 3 stars, it would normally be 2 stars but I have to give them an extra star because the "quality" (**Not Flavor) is outstanding ... with that said. I was disappointed and probably won't go back as I wanted Mexican not a wrap. We ordered the Spinach/Portobello quesadilla to share $9.50. The ingredients in the quesadilla were very fresh although far from Mexican. I've had corn, mushroom and cheese quesadilla's in Mexico it's something quite popular in the Yucatan area. This quesadilla lacked any as in "none existent" Mexican flavors. We also ordered the fish tacos and a shrimp burrito adding mushrooms to the burrito (others rave about the shrimp burritos). The taco's were again very fresh ingredients but lacking in any flavor or spice. My shrimp burrito was disappointing too. It lacked flavor, the shrimp were suppose to be grilled yet had no grill marks and it had way too much rice inside. Oh, it only had 5 shrimp in it, yet it was over $10 As someone else mentioned the salsas are thin & watery & not very spicy. This place is the best! My wife is Gluten Free and she has never had an issue with her order here. They make specialty dishes, but also cook to order. Fish Tacos are excellent and my favorite. I have also eaten the burritos and enchiladas. Never disappointed. My wife enjoys the salad with chicken and adds the spicy chick peas. Jalapeño poppers are gorgeous and gigantic! Dirt cheap, excellent burritos, and relatively fast service. Typically I have a regular burrito with lots of veggies like mushrooms, peppers, and roasted garlic (mm!!). You seriously cannot go wrong if you like Mexican food. And honestly I can't understand why someone wouldn't like it! One more thing: the other day I had a fish taco at Bueno y Sano and it was revelatory. Sounds too good to be true? I thought so, too. It's pretty simple to put some beans, rice, and extras into a burrito, but the fish fillet was lightly fried, well-seasoned, and cooked just until flaky. Even the soft taco shell had texture and flavor. Oh, and don't forget to use the hottest hot sauce they have, if you can handle it, that is. Too much and you ruin the flavors of the other ingredients. But just a touch and you're in heaven. Try it and you won't be sorry. These cats get a bad rep. Sure it's not an authentic burrito, but burritos are an American invention anyways. Their quesadillas look mighty good but I can't pull myself away from ordering the usual: Steak Burrito w/ sour cream and guacamole. Their music selection is great and always brings good childhood memories. The ambience is also a fun industrial-like facility w/ a modern twist. All in all the best burrito you can get in Amherst. I can't tell you how many times I've been here. I'm in love with it. All of their ingredients are fresh and you can definitely taste the difference. Every time someone wants to go to Chipotle *shivers* I tell them we have to come here. It's cheaper, it tastes better, and it's hot. There are so many options that you can't go wrong! It's really inexpensive and you get enough food for one meal plus leftovers for the next day. Their sauces are amazing too. I usually don't like spice but this is where I make my exception. Just a word of warning though, if you get your order to go, get it without sauce on it and just pick up a container on your way out so it won't get soggy. read more

I'd love to try more so must amend my rating accordingly: a good sign in itself. Bueno Y Sano is a Burriton mecca - not the Mexican or even Californian burrito joint of the likes of Chipotle and Moe's - but one like the best little fusion Burrito joints in big cities the nation-wide. Their standard burritos of Rice, beans, Pico, and Cheese can be enlarged, shrunk, turned to a Salad or Bowl - Taco or Quesidilla. It is in the terrific diversity and preperation of the fillings which Bueno shines. I had a Pequeno Grilled Seitan Burrito with garlic (free!) and for about $7 it was filling, flavorful, and sustaining. I need to now try the carnivorous offerings and Asian twists like Curry and Thai peanut Sauce. For another happy visit I suppose! read more

What? A gigantic burrito the size of a child's head made with freshly grilled steak that was made right in front of me that costs about 7 bucks and can be split amongst 2 people and STILL be filling? Count me in!! I love Bueno y Sano. Every year or so I make a pilgrimage back to my alma mater in Western Mass and make sure to stop in to get my burrito fix. I agree with the commenter who said the burritos are like crack; they are. They truly are so good that your gums will tingle and your stomach groan at the mere thought of Bueno's freshly made goodness. Downside: Really crappy parking situation. The price is right and the food is fresh. Service is super friendly and they aim to please. The food portions here are massive. They offer smaller and larger sizes. I can't imagine going for the larger size burrito. They have limitless options to chose from for the fillings. But go with your gut instinct. The wife and I split the steak burrito with roasted garlic and the fish tacos. Both were eyes are bigger than your stomach portions. And then we also threw in some chips and salsa as well. I didn't think that was enough, so I loosened the belt a notch and got some guacamole too. The burrito managed to be eaten about 75% of the way. The fish was gone, but the taco tortillas remained about 65%. So the food portions were way more than enough. As my wife is an alumnus of UMASS Amherst, she survived on 4 years of this delicious grub. I can understand why it is so popular and becomes part of your college meal plan. Next time around, I will bring an empty leg or a 2nd stomach to finish anything. read more

After a day of hiking, I was pretty hungry. Since I hadn't had Mexican food in a while, I decided to see what was available in Amherst. After a quick search, I figured burritos would be quick and easy, as I wanted to get back on the road to Upstate New York. Once in downtown Amherst, I was lucky in finding a parking spot and found this restaurant tucked in an alley way. I decided to check out their chicken bacon ranch burrito, along with trying a BBQ chicken taco. The wait was a little longer than desired, especially since it wasn't that busy at the restaurant. The food though, tasted fresh. It seems like Bueno y Sano tries making a few unique varieties of burritos, so I decided to go with something a little different. This place kept me alive when I was in college 15 years ago. Without them I might have starved. Since then I've learned how to cook and feed myself, and also I gave up dairy (I was always vegetarian.) I accidentally placed an online order for them and tried to cancel it. The person talking to me over the phone was extremely rude and hung up on me about 3 times. Eventually I got the managers number, his name is bob. He said he would refund me around 3 pm and hasn't yet. Simply put, these are the BEST burritos in the world! My friends and I would regularly visit Bueno y Sano when I was a student at UMass in the '90's, and it's still the highlight of my trips to the Happy Valley. As a matter of fact, I always make sure to bring extra burritos home with me to CT so I can freeze them. Everyone I've brought with me to Bueno y Sano has been more than impressed, and I'm sure that you will be, too! Our food was okay but the "service" was terrible. Girl at the register shot me nasty looks/attitude from the moment my daughter and I walked in - not sure why, since I've never seen her before in my life and I generally try to be polite and kind to people. I got curt, single word responses and generally sh*tty attitude from this girl - to the point that my daughter even noticed and commented on it to me. Can't imagine what I had done in the 30 seconds of looking at the menu at an off-time to tick that girl off but it was unwarranted and flat out bitchy/rude. Then our order *somehow* got *lost/forgotten* by the very confused kid/cook so that 3-4 people who walked in after we did got their orders first (noticed they all got smiley service from the checkout girl). Bueno y Sano is a Mexican spot where you can get your typical burrito, quesadilla, tacos and chips with dip. Nothing is really special about the place, but it's good to know that they won't give you any stomach aches or rob your wallet. A chicken burrito with some added toppings will put you at about $7.00; a basic burrito with rice beans and some veggies starts off at $5.50 and you pay for each additional filling starting at $1.25 and up. Their guacamole is FRESH, which is one off the reasons why I like this place. They also put out water for easy access and you can serve yourself. This place is an Amherst classic, and I've been going there for over a decade. It's cheap, it's tasty, and it's filling. When I first started going there, I especially liked how their menu had many choices for vegetarians; you didn't feel like you had to order 'the vegetarian dish'. Their seitan burritos are still my favorite. Now, just a note: this place isn't even remotely 'authentic Mexican'. I don't think there any corn-flour-anything on the menu except tortilla chips. But that's OK by me, because their food is fresh, flavorful, and as spicy as you want it. read more
