It looks nice at first but in my years of living in Malibu it's just the same old smoke and mirrors. Service leaves a lot to be desired for starters. Worst part I left feeling hungry after a hefty bill. I never eat that much so for me to be hungry just means that the portions are small. My special did not include miso soup, or rice. Unheard of for a dinner. But when in Malibu you are a captive audience. Next time it's back to Nobu for satisfying the Japanese cravings. read more

The only thing I would change is ordering the sashimi, it's great fish but small portions, the toro was about 5 thin slices for $35. One of the best places in Malibu. Great for a date night, family event or relaxing dinner. The creative rolls are what keeps me coming back besides the excellent service and cool ambiance. Some of the rolls/food I regularly get include the miso soup, spicy edamame (do yourself a favor and get this if you like spicy!), the spring rolls (not your average spring rolls), crispy tuna rice cakes, rock shrimp tempura, vegetable roll, any hand roll and any special roll. There is always parking and although its crowded, they are very accommodating to try to seat everyone. You might even catch someone famous. read more

Wound up with a suggestion from a nearby hostess to try Bui, and despite the three star rating we went for it. The verdict? Theirs is the freshest sushi I've had (barring fish I've caught myself). Not impressed. I made the mistake thinking a sushi place in Malibu that has been open for more than a few months would be good. We had a late lunch on a Friday afternoon & they weren't busy but that service was slow. I don't think it was the wait staff, the chefs were really slow. Slower than they should be for the time of day. The menu was laid out poorly. The different type of sushi & rolls weren't in the same section. We had to flip all over to see their sushi selection. Starters & salad were in the middle of the menu after lunch items & the host specials. The sushi was below average & some of the rolls lacked any flavor at all. The worst was the surf & turf which was shrimp tempura, filet mignon & asparagus. I doubt the beef was filet, not tender, it was over cooked too. The whole roll had a chemical burnt flavor. I think they used a blow torch to cook it or warm it up because the rice was burnt. The beef by itself didn't taste like that. The shrimp tempura wasn't noticeable. Very disappointed. The blue fin (toro) was also lackluster. I've had better albacore & yellow fin. The other rolls also were disappointing or just bad. Our favorite was the 27 mile, no rice, cucumber wrapped tuna, still not great though. Lastly, a little steep in the price department. One person in our party wasn't feeling well did she just had a couple pretty small bowls of rice for $4 ea. $8 for less than 2 cups of rice. Of the sushi was good quality the price point would've made sense but not for what they served us. If you want sushi in Malibu, keep looking. read more

I am a sushi snob for the fish, not the scene that goes along with it so I can't stand the typical snooty Hollywood-esq places. That being said, I was skeptical about a sushi place in Malibu. First thing I always order at a new sushi restaurant is salmon sushi or sashimi and this place- it will melt on your tongue- simply perfect quality that is not easily found! They have so many interesting rolls here it was hard to decide what to get! My favorite was the lobster roll - between the silky lobster and creamy avocado it was heaven. Not sure where people complaining about the price are eating sushi these days but for two people: two miso soups, edamame, 5 rolls, and a shared order of shrimp & veggie tempura our bill was $60. I paid more then that for less food and poor quality in the valley recently. For some reason we didn't drink that night which would add to the bill but we left stuffed and very pleased with the meal. Went on a Friday night at around 8:00 and there was no wait. Service was great- if anything they were TOO attentive! Outdoor patio was beautiful and I imagine a great place for drinks in warmer weather. Can't wait to go back and try some of their drinks next time! read more

Prices are similar to what you find elsewhere in Malibu for sushi. If you are looking for a salad,,, the seafood salad is one of the best salads ive ever had. The service was mediocre at best. Our waitress was more interested in socializing with her friends at another table + flirting with the bros sitting next to us at the bar than bothering to ask for our drink orders. When she did manage to get to us, she was nice enough, though she never refilled our glasses once. Overall, we may return mainly because it's not too far from where we live. Bui is the best sushi restaurant I have ever been to! It puts Nobu, Katsuya, Nozawa, Hide and Sakura all to shame. I highly recommend the Paradise, Surf &Turf and Rainbow Crunch rolls... and the tuna sashimi is the freshest I've found in LA. The decor (since the recent remodel) is excellent and has a great atmosphere. The waitstaff definitely gets an A+, no snobby or stuck up waiters here as there are in some other sushi restaurants (a few named above). Went here for dinner with a couple of friends. Highly recommend having a reservation! Thankfully we did, so no wait. Service was OK at best, had to ask for refills for water and drinks, actually we had to flag her down as she whisked by our table. The food was great, had the spicy edamame, miso soup, eggplant crisps, Malibu Sunset and the Full Moon Roll; all of which was amazing. The only thing we weren't crazy about were the sautéed mushrooms, way too much salt. At the end, we all got our checks and no pen. So I has to fish for one in my bag. Nearly every time I come down to Malibu I hit up Buis! It is an absolute necessity to order the Spicy Edamame when you come. I could eat a whole plate of this appetizer by myself! I don't have any complaints about Bui - and celebrated a birthday here once too! Perhaps the only thing I'm not a fan about it their sake - definitely won't try that again! Part of the review is based not on my love for the place, but for how much my kids and grandparents love it. I've only been once. Seems to me that the focus here should be on the rolls and not the sushi. It usually feels like a slight tip off when you ask for recommendations on which sushi they recommend and the answer is everything. My kids love love the Malibu Sunset roll which I get. It has a nice sweetish sauce on it and the mango in the middle is super nice. I also tried a snapper sushi, which was nice. I prefer the rice warm but the fish was nice. I really really liked the cooked string beans, kids loved them too. Also tried the miso soup which won't blow you away, but more flavorful than many. read more

It's very zen and clean, not another hole-in-the-wall sushi place; it's decorated very well, but there is still a casual vibe since it's Malibu. All the locals come here. On a Sunday afternoon, I went out with a friend and the restaurant next door had a 15 minute wait. We came here, and we were the only ones in the restaurant. I know where to eat on a Sunday afternoon! The things I LOVE are: Spicy Edamame Sauteed Mushrooms Avocado Roll I used to love the Black Miso Cod (the sauce is heaven!!!), the Miso Soup, and the Veggie Tempura. If they made vegan versions of those, I would definitely order them. Also kinda funny, this place used to be a men's clothing store that sold a lot of Tommy Bahama shirts, and I worked there as a salesperson for a bit. We had a fish tank. read more

We got sushi plate that was worth 12 bucks in other places, (but it was 19 bucks instead here) and hand cut blue crab roll which is my all time favorite. (2stars) and she had the harmachi carpaccio. (some kind of yellowtail) My gf is 95 lbs and it didnt fill her up but she would not stop Raving on and on about how good it was. I cant emphasize on how much she was in love with it. She ended up ordering some more rolls because it didnt fill her up. We made our reservation in advance for four people and were seated right away. Our waitress was very attentive and professional. She knew exactly when to take our orders, ask if our food was okay, and refill our drinks. We ordered the chicken teriyaki combo dinner with miso soup, salad and a California roll, edamame, tempura, fish combination with tuna sushi, carpaccio, and a cucumber sunomono salad. Everything was fresh, delicious, and came out in a timely fashion. We were not kept waiting very long and enjoyed everything we ordered off of the menu. The prices were incredibly reasonable for Malibu. The establishment itself had a great decor that complimented the food. The location is a mile or so from Pepperdine and the performing arts center, it's a great place to have dinner before a show! We will definitely be back again! 3.5 stars. Somehow I'm wavering between expectations and actuality. It's a sushi spot adjacent to Pepperdine just off the PCH in Malibu - so the prices are expected. Just from looking at the outside patio, the atmosphere within is expected. The decor, said location and atmosphere all combined gives off the impression that they can charge whatever they want, slack off wherever they want; as long as Bui Sushi delivers a chic interior and fresh tasting fish (oh yea, Malibu is also ocean adjacent) you'll pretty much just take the experience they have to offer. This, however, does not fully encapsulate my Bui experience. 7:30 on a Saturday evening - all tables except 2 or 3 were occupied, the sushi bar was mostly empty. The hostess asked us to wait, and after a minute of waiting, we were led to a table. After a few more minutes of waiting, we were finally greeted. Two miso soups, unagi, the rainbow roll and some other roll comprised mostly of tuna and avocado. Nothing too complicated, nothing that really dazzles. Granted, it all tasted fresh, but something about the way our rainbow roll came out was off- the size and cut of it. All this, paired with attentive service (this seems to be where my experience differs from half of yelpers) and the type of ambience you expect makes Bui Sushi a pretty good sushi spot in Malibu. read more

They gave us several things to try on the house, including natto, because I had never had it, and they wanted to see my reaction! And oh boy, I will never have that again, haha. Bui Sushi is the best Sushi and sashimi dishes I have ever tried. Yes better than Nobu as they use the same fish distributor, however the Sushi Chefs at Bui pair the flavors like no other with the best tasting sauces made in house by their amazing sushi Chefs. The Albacore sushi has this amazing Yuzu paste that knocks it out of this world. They have this yellowtail Sushi that they can do Carpaccio style which they add a jalapeño slice and a drizzle of their citrus yuzu that they make it's incredible ( that citrus yuzu sauce is a life changer) the best sauce and I can't find it at any other sushi place sadly. The quality of fish is so fresh. They have the second best spicy wok tossed edamame don't forget to add garlic to that! ( first best is Pear Dragon). Their Hamachi Carpaccio is the best I've had and their albacore with crispy onions is the best I have ever had as well including their pepper tuna sashimi! I don't like salmon but if you do, the bui sushi salmon sashimi dish is to die for it's thinly sliced pieces of salmon in a truffle oil special house made sauce! They have added some great Thai dishes to their menu as they have a Thai chef in the kitchen now and I highly recommend to try if you like Thai food. The lobster fried rice or veggie fried rice, is sooo good! Also the Pad See Ew is great. The Rock shrimp is another amazing dish ( I don't like shrimp but I will eat that dish all day long it's so good!). Other amazing incredible dishes that are a must try is: Butterfish it just melts in your mouth so incredible, garlic noodles, black cod lettuce cups, They have such great rolls, you can't go wrong. My favorite is the Sunset roll. Everyone I know their fav rolls are the paradise roll ( if you like lobster), pepper tuna roll, and the spring roll along with the rainbow crunch roll. Portions are great and they also have the option of soy paper if you don't like the traditional seaweed paper. I love and always opt for the Soy paper on the rolls. Their sushi and sashimi dishes are out of this world, best ever!! Try all their special sashimi dishes, you won't be disappointed. The service is top notch filled with great people. They have a cute little patio for outdoor dining and also now do deliveries if you live in the malibu area. All the servers are so incredible and amazing. Max and Rigo behind the sushi bar are so great! Yoshi is the head of the Sushi Chefs and has been there for almost 20 years, he is so great and incredible. Took my daughter here as a treat when we were in Malibu. I must say I will make a trip out just to come here. The place had a clean and trendy vibe. The prices were reasonable, the service was impecable and the food........................ Awe! We had a Paradise roll it was to die for. We also had shrimp tempura and filet mignon off of the appetizer menu, delish!!!! I had a Kirin Light Beer and my kid had an iced tea. All of it was wonderful. We will definitely be back.
