I'd like to thank and commend Oliver and Arin at Buildcal for their superb work in the renovation of the front yard of my house. Arin's men worked diligently to build steps leading from the sidewalk up to the entrance of my house, including walls on either side of the steps, lighting on each step and 2 pillars at the bottom with attractive light fixtures. Arin also landscaped the hillside with attractive drought resistant plants. To complete the renovation, Oliver was responsible for installing the synthetic turf. He was very personable and great about explaining the process to me. His workers completed the whole installation process expertly and efficiently. The entire job took several weeks and I was grateful that at the end of each day, the men were good about cleaning up. My house finally has great curb appeal and I've received numerous compliments on the work. A few weeks after the job was completed, Arin checked in with me to see how the plants were doing. There were minor issues with the sprinklers and plants not getting enough water so he added a new sprinkler line, tweaked the watering schedule and replaced a few plants. The reason for this review is due to the owner. I can't believe the positive reviews he's gotten here because they really mislead me. I used him for a somewhat large landscape project. Upon first meeting him, I liked him. But as the project started and continued, he severely lacked customer service skills and I grew to distrust him. I've never been treated so poorly by a contractor. His behavior was rude at times. One incident involved me very nicely reminding him that his guys forgot to put the week blocker down prior to pouring the rocks, which no one would ever do. As he walked across the yard, he said "my guys know how to do their job." Other incidents involving various strangers walking on my property that worked for him and he never once mentioned it.... me being a woman at home alone, I did not prefer this. When I texted him to let him know his people were at my house, thinking perhaps he did not realize, he texted back, saying something like, "he's aware of all activities involving his business," sounding like I offended him. Instead a good customer service person would say "sorry I forgot to let you know someone was stopping by." Also, he asked on a call for my guidance on where to place the brick edge, but then I look out the window and he's spray painting the line without me being there. And every time I went out to discuss the project, I felt like he was avoiding me and that my presence was not welcomed in my own yard. Lastly, his guys did not show up one day due to weather, which was ok by me, but he did not give me the courtesy of texting me to let me know for sure and I have insomnia, so waking up that early was painful. When I texted to let him know I was hoping he'd of texted me, he seemed defensive or annoyed and said he mentioned a possibility of weather a couple days ago. Why not just say "sorry I did not text you"? I'm the customer here. However, there was another prior day that also looked equally dreary and the guys showed up, so how was I supposed to know? Regarding the distrust, there are a few reasons. I repeatedly asked and told him I don't want trees with berries/seeds/fruit, yet the trees he planted ended up having berries. Two of the trees he planted looked in poor shape and I asked him the day they were delivered and he said it was because they were younger, but in hindsight I realized that he had even younger trees that looked better and were the same color as the larger ones. Also, he almost killed my tangerine tree with the lack of irrigation he installed. He said it was fine cause the tree was established. We had him put a brick patio under this tree because of it's shade and a month after his irrigation was installed, thousands of it's leaves fell off and we have little shade now! And I had to hire another contractor to install more irrigation. Lastly, I had asked him for some general guidelines on watering schedule for the trees/plants. He basically refused to tell me and said whomever is maintaining my yard should know and that there's many factors involved, as if to say there are no guidelines and only a trained person will know. So upon hearing this, and worried about the guarantee on the trees he planted, I decided to hire his service. But even at this point, I asked him again about changing the watering and that they need to tell me cause the timer is inside my house. He said that his guys would tell him when the trees are established and he'd email me. That answer was very inconvenient and it would seem that after a customer spends thousands on new plants, they'd want to be able to maintain them regardless of who does the yard. Also, that leaves me repeatedly asking his yard guys if they're established and rely on them to tell their boss and him to email me. UPDATE: One of the largest trees he planted fell over within 6-8 months, so I can assume something in the way they planted it was incorrect. Also, I forgot to mention 2 things - they drilled through my house's foundation without asking - his workers said the owner did not like the look of the existing PVCs pipes that were sticking out of a screen. I never minded the way they looked and felt this should of been approved beforehand. Lastly, to avoid him having to pay for the dumpster to be on the street (needed a permit), he suggested the truck place it in our driveway, which got damaged when they dropped it. He attempted to fix this, but it never looked good and cracked again. I honestly don't understand why this company keeps getting good reviews. The owner's response to my review was that it is a personal opinion and not reality. That response sounds very patronizing and not customer friendly, which is more evidence of what my review is saying. read more

We talked to three other companies first but went with BuildCal in part because we felt comfortable that we could work with Arin based on his understanding of our landscape problem and his ideas for addressing it. We lost an ancient oak in a windstorm which left us with a very large empty tree well in the middle of a damaged concrete ptatio. After considering a number of options we had BuildCal fill in the hole and cover the entire patio with pavers. About 1000 sq. ft. There were some drainage and transition issues which BuildCal addressed perfectly. We also had them do some brick repair work to our driveway. Everything turned out great. Arin, Artin and their crew were very easy to work with and we had no problems during the project unlike our last experience with a contractor. read more

Arin made our uneven dirt pile into an actual backyard that our son can run around and play in. We decided to go with turf and he had some really good options and I am really happy with the turnout. The turf is super soft and has little flecks of cream colored grass toward the "root" which makes it look more realistic. I am super picky and am so happy with the way it looks. We had one miscommunication with how we wanted the AC units to be fenced in, and he came over right away to solve the issue. He is really easy to get in contact with either with texting or calling. And he never makes you feel like he's in a rush and doesn't have time for you. Also, with pricing he quotes you right away and sticks to it which we appreciate! So we are really happy and look forward to having Arin work on our front yard too! read more

They are not your typical landscape designers. I found Buildcal while I was walking my dog. They were working on my neighbor's front yard. I asked them what they were doing, and they explain about the grass-buy-back program. It was a short, but very effective conversation. I got great advice on how to reduce my water usage. I just thought it was a great opportunity for me to use their service and see what the possibilities in my backyard were. On the way back home, I asked them to take a look at my property before they leave for the day. They showed up on time and we chatted for a while about the possibilities in my backyard. Let me be frank. They were extremely knowledgeable. They helped me with the rebate forms and did the measurements of my backyard grass area free of charge. Told me to check my neighbor front yard after the job was done, and if I like what they have done, give them a call. No pressure or not even a phone call from them until I got approved for rebate. Contacted them, they came and we talked more about what they were going to do and how much budget we were looking at. Sure enough, I signed the contract. They started exactly as they promised. Did low maintenance and California Native design in my back yard with drip irrigation and some landscape lighting. Finish the job earlier than what they promised. They exsiccate every scope of jobs mentioned in contract. Answered all my questions and responded to my phone call and messages all the time. Very clean job and they pay lots of attention to details. They are also big fan of recycling. Used some of my old hardscape material and utilized them in my new design. I ended up with a sanctuary in my backyard. We really like to thank them again for their hard work and wonderful design. I would never imagine my backyard could look so beautiful and balanced.
