Horrible experience server got both mine and my husbands meals wrong was so pushy when I told her I will eat it grabbed it out of my hand. Ruined my birthday and will not return she was too busy caring more for her other tables that she assumed would tip her better. I serve tables for a living so that pissed me off. Arrived around 4pm and were seated very quickly. I ordered a cup of their "famous" lobster bisque and the award winning crab cake sandwich. I've had much better lobster bisque, while there were chunks of lobster meat the soup was just ok, not sweet or flavorful like I've had other places. My crabcake was just ok too. There was about 50% filler and not much flavor except for a strong fishy taste. But the fries were good. (I was not impressed). The other person in my party also shared my opinion of the lobster bisque. She ordered the lobster roll platter that was cooked with butter served warm(not the one with the mayo). The lobster was way overcooked and tough. She could not taste the lobster because of the over use of old bay, all you could taste was the seasoning. She sent her dish back. ( I don't know why the cook seemed to think that the lobster needed the old bay) The waitress was not the best, never came to ask if things were ok, and it was hard to flag her down for another drink. We were here years ago and the food was great. Tonight not so much. My wife ordered shrimp.and scallops In Scampi sauce. Very little garlic taste and watered down buttersauce. Wasn't great but she ate it anyway. I ordered Surf and Turf $40. When I received my food mashed potatoes were cold as was the asparagus. Lobster so over cooked it was rubbery and my medium Steak was rare. Ok I get the manager she buys a round on the house, takes food back to.bring me perfect plate o n a few minutes. That's nice I appreciated that. Now when my plate comes back it's the same Nasty rubbery lobster placed on top of shell same cold.potatoes and asparagus. WTF. I'm thinking this can't be real. It seems as though Bum Rogers has gone downhill more recently Growing up locally in Berkeley, every time I return to NJ, I always make the effort to come back for the food and this time was no different with a Sunday evening visit for our party of 5. Unfortunately, this visit was doomed from the get go. The hostess(es) were both very rude to me, seemed uninformed, and and had no strategy around quoting the appropriate time estimates to get people seated. There were a number of tables open on the outside patio and there seemed to be too many proverbial "cooks in the kitchen" with who was responsible for setting wait times and seating parties. They quoted us 30 minutes which seemed to be way off base from the looks of the empty four and six tops on the patio. There were a number of frustrated groups outside of ours with this overall disorganization at the hostess station. After bringing this to the attention of one of the managers, Mike, he was able to seat us right away. Once seated, our waiter had no beer list or knowledge of what beers were on tap inside or out, so I had to get up myself and ask the patio bartender who pointed out a sign which was broken so still no beer list. I asked three different staff members to help me with a beer list and no one seemed at all interested in gathering this basic information me to order a brew. There seems to be a culture festering at Bum's of a lack of customer service. From the hostesses, waiters and bartenders, everyone we interacted with, aside from Mike, seemed completely disinterested in helping with our requests. It's really a shame to see and it will be a long time before we return. Overall, the food was fine but not worth the hassle. read more

Bum's has been a staple for me and my family for almost a decade. I always enjoy the food and the atmosphere and the history of the Jersey Shore. But this experience was much different this time. My brother orders a calamari plate that was considered an appetizer. I start to eat it but as I am doing so, I am spitting it into a napkin and picking out fragments of what felt like spine or bone. Thinking it was just a one time thing I brush it off and continue eating. But I am starting to feel sicker and I felt as if I was being poked from the inside out. I cough and a much larger piece of that spine or bone thing was dislodged. My father did inform the server, but did not bring it up to the manager/owners attention. The women's bathroom was not up to par either. 2 of 3 toilets were either clogged or dirty and the floor was covered in water. I understand restaurants have bad nights, and the constant change of staff probably doesn't help but I just want to know, what happened? read more

I think a Bum actually does cook here. If fly's and frozen mozzarella sticks (not kidding) don't bother you, maybe the warm beer will. This was by far, the worst dining experience. Just got back from a dinner at Bum Rogers Tavern, I was not at all impressed. We got there around 6:30 for dinner and had to wait for about 1/2 hour. We waited outside and had a nice talk with the reservation girl, she was very sweet. We were seated at a table and our server came to take our order, again, she was very pleasant. After this point there is nothing else nice to say about this place. As I was sitting there, I felt water dripping on my head. I looked up and I was sitting under the AC vent and the water condensation was just dripping like crazy. A very tall man, I think the owner, came over and would wipe the water off the vent. This was happening all throughout dinner. The restaurant was very crowded and there were no other tables available. The food eventually came. I ordered lobster. It was overcooked and overpriced. I couldn't eat it and was going to take it home, but as I sat there waiting for the check, the water from the ceiling vent just kept dripping on my plate. We mentioned it to the owner, and he just seemed to smurk and walk away. Needless to say, I didn't take the lobster with me and on Monday will be calling the Health Department of New Jersey. Maybe and hopefully after the Health Department gets done with the owner, he will think twice about shrugging off a customer. The dinner was very expensive and NOT WORTH THE PRICE. One of the worst places I've ever visited. I just got back from eating there, or I should say hardly eating. The experience started out with dirty silverware and plates with food stuck to them and dirty cups for our beverages, which the staff was barely apologetic for. We then got our appetizers which, by this point, we only picked at because our appetite wasn't too big after finding food on our utensils. These were decent, but could have been far better. This is a seafood establishment and if you want clams or clam strips, TOUGH LUCK! They only offer clams on occasion as a special. What kind of seafood restaraunt doesn't regularly have clams as an option? My father actually cancelled his order after asking about the clams because he didn't want to get sick from the food. When we finally got the food after a rather lengthy wait (especially considering that this place was dead), I wasn't very pleased. I ordered the Angus Burger. For starters when you ask for no tomatoes or lettuce, is it that hard of a thing to not put tomatoes or lettuce on a burger? I asked for a little bit of pink and the burger was completely burnt on the outside and next to raw on the inside. I don't know how an establishment can manage that, but if you like hockey pucks filled with salmonella, this is the restaraunt for you. Speaking of managing, there was no management! The manager doesn't come in until around 2:00PM every day so we couldn't even make a complaint or ask him about his processes. The way they operate is that until 2:00, the staff is on their own. The waitress only apologized when she gave us the check and it wasn't very sincere, you could tell she was trying to weasel in a tip. As we left around 2:00, the manager made an appearance. We stepped outside with him and we expressed our dissatisfaction, and his exact response to it all was "What, you're a little upset because you didn't get your clam strips?" He couldn't have cared less or been more sarcastic with us. Safe to say, I don't plan on ever returning to this place and if I weren't just vacationing here and I lived here and had the time to, I would file a complaint and request to have the restaraunt inspected because it's obviously just scraping by, unless they clean everything only when the inspector comes to evaluate their restaraunt. read more

If you love crabs this is a must go place. Not fancy but very good. The crabs in sauce with pasta is a must have dish.

Two short points to sum up my experience at Bum's today. 1. Female waitress' were very unfriendly. One actually ate a hard boiled egg while serving a customer from the bar. 2. Po boy sandwich was great, but the roll to crab ratio was pathetic. Basically for $13.00 you get bread, tomatoes, and lettuce. A quick solution! Bigger portions for the same prices! read more

Low star rating mostly due to ordering the Panko encrusted Grouper and it NOT being grouper! They sneakily substituted another less dense fish- either flounder or tilapia and thought it would be be noticed. Grouper is very different than these thin flaky fishes. Beside the entree was just very oily and fried- it didn't say fried on the menu. Unfortunately I was enjoying my time with friends at the table and was too busy talking before I ate the whole thing and then realized "that wasn't grouper!" So I never said anything while at the restaurant. If I had noticed it early enough, I def would have spoken up. This deceit was very unfortunate. Great place for seafood. Love the atmosphere. Make sure you try the Lafayette crabs. They have live bands play which I enjoy. I recommend all my friends come here all the time. In the summer it's a great place near the beach. read more

My "go to" beach bar. Sandwiches are all solid and plenty of good appetizers. Burger, lobster roll or Fish Tacos you cant go wrong. Wings extra well done are perfect. Beer selection keeps getting better - LOVE that there are local Jersey beers available. One recommendation- since Berkley market is gone the entire neighborhood is Jonesing for whole belly clams. How about a belly special this summer! Always a good atmosphere. Great for families in the afternoon and evenings even better for adults to kick back out back or sing along inside later at night. Great little place. Had a bunch of appetizers that were really good. The crab dip and drunken clams were great. The camari were the best I've had in a very long time. The drinks however were very light on the alcohol. It was not until drink #5 that I could tell I drank any alcohol at all. Probably will have to order doubles if I go back or just a soda. read more

Money ill spent! This place was recommended for seafood so the family and I decided to head out early (arrived 5:00pm) for a culinary adventure. Our anticipation was heightened by the fact we had to drive around for 20 minutes to find a parking spot figuring this was a tell tale sign the place was popular and we were in for some good eats. We made our way through the doors to give our information to the hostess who had a bit of an attitude which again I ignored because we were eating good tonight. In fact I was somewhat enamored by the text to my phone feature that provided a link that allowed me to view the number of people that were still ahead of us. The anticipation was like waiting for the Heinz catsup to pour out of the bottle. At about 6:40 we were seated at a booth near the bar, were greeted by a duo belting out songs for happy hour (4-7), and I was starting to salivate. I could almost taste the meal we were about to have. Our order started with a few apps which consisted of Boneless Wings with a Buffalo sauce and Fried Calamari with a Thai Chill sauce. Our entrees included Lobster Nicholas which was a whole steamed lobster with shrimp, scallops and mussels in spicy Fra Diavolo sauce over penne ($37.99); Shrimp and Scallops tossed in a garlic scampi sauce served over linguini ($25.99); and Lobster Fra Diavolo which was lobster, mussels, shrimp, scallops, calamari and crab sautéed in spicy tomato sauce, served over linguini ($39.99). Sounds good? It was all terrible... When all was said and done it was $170 for the 3 of us. Don't get me wrong the price was by far not the issue but at a certain price point you expect the food to be good and the service to match, unfortunately neither lived up to the anticipation. Top 6 Reasons we will not be back: 1) Unfriendly hostess 2) Suspect apps were the frozen kind you get at one of those big box stores, heated or fried and dumped on a plate, really sad! Not even dressed up with a few pieces of lettuce for presentation:( 3) There were no serving plates brought out when our apps arrived we had to ask 4) There we no paper towels or napkins on the table (guess what, yea we had to ask) 5) The Scampi dish must have been sitting as the pasta was dry in a few places as if it was sitting under a heat lamp, shrimp and scallops were overcooked. Was it a cook or wait staff issue, don't know but that should not be my problem 6) Both Fra Diavolo dishes had overcooked lobster and shrimp. Missing something important, flavor Please don't provide feedback on being really busy, wait staff not showing up for work or the cook being new. These and many more are all items that a good restaurant handles without impact to the customer. My solution is we will not be back....... read more

Bum Rogers has been completely renovated--and it looks amazing! There is now outside seating with live music, including a great outside bar. The food is incredible along with the service. We had a rough experience last night (The one star is for the food only, which was honestly delicious). We arrived at 6:30 and decided to stick out the 1 and 1/2 hour wait we were quoted for a table because we heard the food was so great. We had our 3-year-old with us who was so patient during the wait time, but as we hit the 2-hour mark, I checked with the hostess to get an ETA. The manager was at the host stand at the time and couldn't find our name on the list or the number of our buzzer that we had - which led me to believe they had somehow crossed us off by accident. The second hostess noticed the oversight and quickly said, "you're next." We continued to wait, watched families who had arrived well after us get called in for their table. A family of 5 showed up and put their name on the list, 10 minutes later, their buzzer went off. I walked in right behind them to remind the hostess that we had been waiting for two-and-a-half hours and when she saw us, she looked uncomfortable and told the family it was our turn, not theirs. So, we were finally sat over an hour from what we were quoted. Our server greeted us but was clearly frazzled. I asked him if he recommended the Garlic Crabs or the Baltimore Style (traditional Old Bay). He muttered, "The Baltimore is spicy so it's really not enjoyable." I went with the Garlic Crabs and a bowl of Manhattan Clam Chowder to start. My husband ordered the New Englander, a big steam pot of shellfish. I ordered my now very sleepy 3-year-old her meal and asked for it to come out whenever it was ready. About 5 minutes later, her food came out from the kitchen but we were never given any silverware. Luckily, she's 3, so I could break it up and she could use her fingers. About 10 minutes after that, our food came out. My soup never came. Still, no silverware and no one avail to ask for it. Not only no silverware, but no tools or anything to break our shellfish with. My husband improvised working his lobster with a fork, but I was stuck since I had hard shelled crabs. The server finally brought over a bucket for us but it only had wooden mallets in it. He said he was gonna look for some crab crackers in the back. I sat there staring at my food for 10 minutes while my daughter fell asleep and the server was nowhere to be found. Eventually he came by again and just said, "the crackers are in dish, they'll be out soon." And walked away. Another 5-10 minutes passed and he finally brought over crackers for us. Despite being cold, I will say the crabs were absolutely delicious and fresh, but I had to rush through them because my husband was pretty much done with his meal by now and crabs take a lot of time to work through. Despite the obvious mismanagement and repeated errors, no effort was made to make us feel like valued guests. No apologies, maybe in the least take the soup off the bill? We were really disappointed. Food-wise, this place has total potential, but management-wise, two solid thumbs down. I have worked in the food service industry for years, and last night was the kind of experience I used to have nightmares about as a server. Only this time, it cost us $80! read more

Went here recently with my family! I'm shocked to say that it was fairly good. Bums has always had a "better drink than food reputation". We got the meatball appetizer and it was delicious. Fresh basil flavor and the sauce was so flavorful. I also got the calamari, cooked perfectly. For dinner I had gotten the garlic crabs and it was such a fun experience! Would recommended. Shout out to our server "jordan s" may want to bring sodas before lobster bisque when it's 90 degrees out. Was served our soup and never had our drinks brought over so we asked the hostess for our server and she rudely desponded "he's right there" and was no help to us. The waiter finally came to the table and his apology for no drinks was "my bad" as he walked away AGAIN. Muscles were fishy, waited about ten minutes for drink refills and wasn't given the opportunity to order more drinks or desserts before the bill was given to us. We just had a very disappointing meal. We were a party of 10 and had a reservation for 6:30. We sat down right away and ordered within 15 minutes. We waited 1 hour for our meal and not once did she come to update us. We were never offered another drink or told of a kitchen problem. When our meal arrived 3 of the same dish meals were cold. They took it back to heat as the rest of the party finished their meal. We called the waitress over to inquire and she said they were making 3 new meals and they are in the oven. We then received the meal after 20 more minutes. Of course all but one person finished their meal. Mashed potatoes were cold on all three meals. We spoke to the manager and she did get us new hot potatoes. However not one apology from the manager and we felt like we were treated like we caused the problem. No apology no customer service whatsoever and we will not return! Very disappointed!!! read more

But.... seafood salad was small but good , crab dip was also good... waitress told us 3 tacos and only 2 ..... sun went down 1 1/2 hours ago and waitress still had on mirrored sunglasses... beer was flat tried a few different ... all flat So ordered white wine by the bottle Ummm warm!!! oops when we first arrived 4 people at the bar and bartender told us to "hold on be with ya in a min " and disappeared waited 10 min and table came up so went to table OMG!! This is a very specific type of place- it's great if you are looking for a fun, laid-back seafood place / bar (literally one side is a lively, home town type bar with live music and the other side is like a simple restaurant). I stopped by to see their outdoor backyard patio. It was hot, humid and quite uncomfortable, so I immediately left. They advertised numerous beers on tap but none of the three I asked for were available. I was also told that happy hour was only available at the inside bar. I went to the inside bar which is dark and dismal and found out none of the better beers were discounted for happy hour. I can't understand why anybody likes this place. Went to eat lunch after a nice day at the beach. We went with long time customers who introduced me any my girlfriend to the place. The food was pretty good. I got the lobster roll. It came with fries that were over salted but other than that the food was pretty tasty. The reason for the one star review was the attitude of the manager or part owner as it was explained by our server who was very nice. Before ordering we realized that the menus had different prices. For instance prices on two menus had the lobster roll at 15 .99 vs 18.99 on the other. Same went for the fish tacos and a few other items. Before ordering qe pointed this out to our waitress. She acknowledged this and said we would be charged for the lower prices on the first menus. After we received the bill we realized that we were charged the higher menu prices. We let the server know and she said she would send over the manager. There waa no attitude we jist wanted to pay tge proper amount. Instead of the manager coming by to explain he walked by passive aggressive yelling to the host( " make sure you check all those menus, im not gonna get beat again ! ) We were right next to the host when he yelled. He didn't even acknowledge us, just yelled at her so we could hear and when he rounded the corner he hust glared at the person paying the bill. So with that immature attitude he lost two long time customers and two recent ones. An adult professional attitude goes a long way. So after the fixed the bill it wasn't even correct. OK, so the place has had a reputation for pretty lousy service at the bar..and I can sit here and tell you on no uncertain terms, they are still living up to that reputation without any problem. Well, I pretty much had to jump over the bar and try to get the bartender's attention after he walked by me say 4 or 5 times to the other end of the bar where he took the same drink orders from the same two people the entire time I was there (and the guy next to me was drunk and figured HE would try to get the bartender's attention at which point I had to do something drastic) I've always loved Bums for the joint it is but when the service really takes a turn for the worse and impacts your fun in this dump then it ain't a whole lot of fun anymore. Not since Ralph have I seen a great bartender there. RIP Ralph - you made that place a hoot and a holler and I'll never forget you and your big smile behind the bar!! read more
