After moving to NYC in 1997, I was referred by a friend to a stylist and salon which I continued to use for more than 7 years happily and loyally. The stylist was not Andrean and the salon was not Bumble & Bumble. A hair emergency arose (big job interview) four years ago and my go-to stylist was out of town. My wife suggested I try her stylist at Bumble & Bumble and I have been seeing Andrean there ever since. Recently, a victim of the sinking economy, I was laid off suddenly. The good news is that I managed to line up an interview almost immediately. But, I had a problem: my hair had grown a little too long and shaggy for an important job interview. That's right, Andrean to the rescue again. If I get the job, I know exactly who to thank. Skilled and charming, as long as Andrean remains at Bumble & Bumble, I will remain a customer. Had an amazing first experience in August and cant wait to be back and have my hair cut again In October. As someone who travels for work quite a bit I have troubles getting in with a regular stylist. Having been in NYC and in need of a good clean up I was thrilled to be able to experience the Bumble and Bumble salon. I am now on a hair action plan! with the talented stylist William and thrilled to get back in Oct. I have a terrible time with thinning hair and William made sure my cut supported my concerns and prescribed me the full potential line. Like the majority of the people I know, we are always trying to find the best places to get a haircut. One that will cut it the way you want it without you telling them. I cannot say this will be my last place to go because I do love trying new ones out there, what I can say is that I was pretty impressed by the haircut. I've always enjoyed their hair products so I figured I'd give this a shot. I look at the cut, price, and friendliness for an overall rating. I can't think of anything here that will give this place lower than a 5 in each category (well maybe the price because we all wish it would be more affordable). The location and décor is amazing. Totally satisfied and plan on recommending this place to my friends as well. If only I could remember the name of the person I saw that would be a great help. ROY x ROY x ROY x ROY x ROY One of the biggest reasons I'm giving five stars is because i have thick/curly hair and finding a good blowout in New York City has been a five year journey. I can stop searching. Roy did my hair. I left happy and feeling gorgeous. Rest of review below: I was a few minutes late for my appointment w/ Tashina. Unfortunately, she could no longer accommodate me. Understandable, I was late, fair enough. I was matched with Roy in the mean time and I am very happy I was! I have thick wavy/curly hair and was nervous about how straight he could get it. He blew it out with ease and gave me a great haircut. He listened to my request for very little product and showed me everything he was about to use before putting it on my hair. Usually, I have to guide stylists through the blowout process, I didn't have to give him guidance at all, as a matter of fact, I made a few mental notes of my own while he was working away. I loved the Dryspun finish hairspray. Alison, who washed my hair, was very nice as well. I'll definitely return. I usually get blowouts done at Dry Bar and was considering a monthly membership there but I'm officially a Bumble & Bumble convert. My go-to salon now for sure! read more

I feel like I just got robbed. First, let me first say that my colorist was thoughtful, very skilled, and capable --he did an excellent job! The following review has nothing to do with his performance. This review is for management who determine business model and service level practices. Service level issue: The question-- do you want your hair dried after getting your hair color changed is absurd. Uh, yes--I would like to see how the color turned out after 3 hrs. of processing. Please note if you say yes: The color assistant books you a "blow out" but you are unaware that this is an "add on" service. After a 7 min blow dry, and upon checking out you will learn that having your hair dried costs you an additional $85 bucks. Come on! I don't mind paying $350 for a single process but to add $85 for drying my hair (short and quick) is a poor business model and terribly unprofessional. What could have been an excellent experience turned sour when you decided to use your staff to tack on $85 bucks for a service that should have been included. read more

Situated on the top floor in Meat Packing District with amazing views of the city... The House of Bumble is a well-oiled machine that crunches out gorgeous cuts & colors daily. Hopping from boutique salons in LES to hipster spots in Williamsburg... and TOTALLY f'ing up my hair color, I turned to The House of Bumble for a major color correction. I look like a train-wreck when I walk in, but the staff was still so friendly... which is hard to come by in this neighborhood. Several months later, I have continued to return because of the Bumble staff. Alan for cuts. Sasha & Aida for color. Miracle workers. Even the skinny blonde guy at the front desk is awesome. I felt compelled to post a yelp review after a recent trip to Bumble and Bumble. I had a wonderful initial meeting and a fantastic haircut (I believe my hairdresser's name was Nicon), but was very rudely received when I went to check out. As I arrived at the check out counter, the woman behind the desk barely looked up. When she finally did (after at least one minute) she barely acknowledged me until I said, "hi, I'd like to pay for my haircut?" She didn't say anything - didn't apologize for her delay in speaking to me, didn't inquire as to my thoughts on my haircut but merely announced I owed $114 in a very rude and curt voice. I was a bit turned off by her demeanor but signed my credit card receipt, left over a 20% tip for Nicon, and began to walk out of the salon. I realized, however, that I wasn't sure which way to walk to reach Greenwich Avenue. I knew it was within two blocks of the salon but not sure as to which direction. I turned around, headed back to the counter, and said, "excuse me, do you happen to know where ..." Before I could even utter the street I was looking for, the woman behind the counter begins shaking her head "no." I was shocked. I had not even said the street name; how was she to know where I was looking to go? So, I replied, "you don't know where Greenwich Ave is? I know it's within two blocks, I'm just not sure which direction." She then said, in a patronizing and incredibly condescending tone, "no, I don't know." And with that, she returned to her computer. I then asked, "does that computer have internet?" She stared at me with a look of disgust and replied "no." I left the salon really annoyed. Upon exiting, I asked a man outside which way Greenwich Ave was and he pointed me in the correct direction, mentioning it was roughly 1.5 blocks from where I was. At this point I was pretty angry. I received a very unacceptable haircut from a senior hairstylist at Bumble and bumble on Saturday. I chose Ray because he got some very good reviews here, plus I figured if he was a senior hairstylist at the salon, then he must be good. I went in with a lob that had some natural wave but it was evenly long almost everywhere. What I wanted was a great layered haircut with movement that would look good anyway I styled it. What I got was a mess of a haircut for $165 plus tax and tip. Ray and I had a consultation before he started and it seemed like we were on the same page. However, his cutting technique (as I watched in the mirror) was very bazaar with random slicing of my hair. Given his credentials, I trusted and trusted until the end. It's not so much the wasted money that bothers me, nor that I still don't have a great go-to stylist but rather the fact that I must let my hair grow for months before starting over with a better style. I truthfully find it difficult to look at myself in the mirror and I feel that whatever attractiveness I possessed has been dimmed. I write this not to embarrass anyone but to inform so that you don't have the same outcome I did. If I find myself not willing to wait months for regrowth, then I think I'll get a keratin treatment to smooth out all the weird layers and get a small trim to even out the cut. read more

I've been coming here for 3 years now (downtown). Tzipi Is a goddess! My color is fabulous. Sarah gave me the best cut I've had in years. So this review is not for them. BUT I went there this week and had to get a cut from a new person. I paid 160+ for 5 minutes with the stlylist then almost 30 minutes with this young assistant who dried my hair horribly. How can you charge so much money to have some inexperienced person do the finishing piece on a Incredibly expensive haircut (a trim at that) ? My husband laughed at the blow out. I am a living, breathing example of "You get what you pay for." Thinking it'd be impossible to screw up a simple half-inch trim, I got my hair cut at a unisex barber for $18. Bad idea--they massacred my shoulder-length locks into some bizarre reverse mullet and bangs that made me look like Marvin the Martian. In tears, I frantically called up Bb and asked if there were any openings that night. They fit me in with a stylist named Britney. Britney pretty much saved my life that night. OK, that's a slight exaggeration, but only slight. She listened to my story and assessed my wretched haircut without a hint of judgment. (I only say that because Bb is extremely swanky and fashionable--the type of place a DIYer-dork like myself usually avoids.) She was upfront and honest, letting me know that she'd have to take off some length to fix the mess. And she understood that I was trying to grow my hair out, so she cut it in such a way that I wouldn't have to return every three weeks for a trim. In the end, I was so happy with my new 'do that I was almost glad the guy butchered it in the first place. It was pricey, yeah, but lesson learned: You get what you pay for. i'd give this place 3 stars for decor, location, service and 1 star for performance. i thought i would try this place. it's bumble and bumble, how can you go wrong. not sure who to go to, i accepted the receptionist's suggestion to go with Roy. "roy is the best. i wouldnt recommend him to you otherwise." okkk here goes... upon arrival you notice the view is breathtaking and you get to enjoy it with a complimentary coffee/latte. there was also a live band. the wait was so quick. i was ready to shampoo before my latte was served but they were nice to bring it downstairs to me. i met ron and he wasnt much of a talker. he was quick, didnt ask questions, seemed confident. it was comforting yet unsettling. we decided we would add bangs for a new look and trim the ennds. the cut took about 15 mins. i felt i looked trendy. the next day, i tried styling it the same way and could not make the same look. actually, my hair looked simiiar to peggy bundy. it was huge and puffy on top and thin at the ends. i tried flat ironing the bangs which helped somewhat but my hair was still thick on top and flat on ends. bottom line, i had a rock star mullet and am lucky my boyfriend didnt judge my "sexy" morning do. wont go there ever again even if the cut was free. read more

The free haircuting sessions are fantastic. you do have to devote a good portion of your day but since all of the people coming for the classes are trained, experienced stylists at other salons, you're pretty much guaranteed to get a good cut. it is a good idea to be very specific about what you want & be honest about how high or low maintenance you need your hair to be or you won't get a cut you can live with. but the best part is that if you don't absolutely love your cut, even after you leave the session, you can go to the full salon uptown and get your hair re-cut by a Bumble professional. And the free styling sessions and products are definitely a bonus! I'd definitely recommend it to anyone on a budget with a little time to spare. -the salon uptown is super trendy and a fun experience but i can't afford $100 haircuts all the time (or more than once, really) so the classes are a definite money-saver. read more

After reading about a popular hair salon in the West Village, I really wanted to make it MY hair place, But after a couple of failed attempts I knew I had to move on. I originally came to Bumble because they do the hair painting method, which I had become a fan of at the place in the West Village. I feel it is less harsh on my hair than foils. I had no references at Bumble so I took whomever they gave me on the phone, who turned out to be Marci. After consulting with Marci she informed me to get the results I was looking for I would have to go back to foils. She took the time to explain everything so I trusted her decision and she was correct. Immediately after I left I was already 10x happier with my color than I ever had been at the old place. I have since been back and am still happy with the results. I am also happy with the fact that Marci doesn't hand me off to an assistant to do all of post-work. She washed and glazed my hair herself. And came to check on me after I dried it. Which brings me to my only real con for Bumble is the price- expensive of course, but it does not include a blowout. Color blowouts, while slightly cheaper than a blow out on its own, are extra-- I want to say maybe $40 or so? Considering the cost of full highlights, the blowout really should be included. Especially since its only an extra 20 minutes. read more

However, on my most recent trip, Albert thinned out my locks, cut a few inches and made my hair way more manageable. I did the Model Project, and I have to say it left me with damn good results. It's free what else can you ask for? I've had about 3 cuts from them since i started being model project for them. You basically have to go to the model call once, and if they like your hair and you are willing to have it cut they will use you. Now I see girls who go there with LONG hair that don't want it cut, they want a trim, and the model project is NOT for trims. so go elsewhere. Then everyone wants to keep their hair long, but they're all hesitant about layers, geez its a free haircut, if you're that picky go elsewhere and stop complaining! I went in with long hair, past my shoulders, and i got a razor bob each time. they can do various things with the length, just above the shoulders, a long bang, etc, the stylist talks to you and sees what you want and need. Each time they cut it, it came out different and it was great. I've never really had any problems with them. The people who cut your hair are people who work and or own their own hair salons. They are NOT students. They have experience cutting hair. They tell you to wash your hair before as they don't wash your hair there. It's not really that big of a deal you know. For the color project you have to have your hair cut and assessed by them and they do wash your hair there. but you must be willing to let them cut your hair, not a trim! I am tired of hearing people complain how they did not want them there because of this or that, or how they do not wash their hair there. If you want someone to wash your hair and give you a trim then go to a hair salon and pay them! read more

A little pricey but worth it. I had my long hair cut into a shoulder length lob by Erickson ($130 now plus tip) over a year and a half ago, and haven't needed another cut since! My hair just somehow falls into place and looks good. Recently I had honey/caramel partial paint/highlights by Sasha ($250 plus tip) and it totally transformed my look for the better. I love it! I have asian hair that has been dyed many times. In the past two years, my hair has been highlighted by a salon that closed, "highlighted" at another salon (they actually made it a dark and brassy mess), dyed darker and highlighted again at another salon which looked so bad I had to box dye it black....Then in December I tried to get a full head of highlights at Bumble & Bumble but after 6 hours I only had a subtle lightening. The stylist only charged me for partial highlights and gave me a free blowdry because he couldn't get my hair as light as I wanted and said I should come back again in 3 months to try to go lighter. I made an appointment in March and my stylist was unavailable but they offered me Sasha. This ended up being awesome for me be because in only an hour or two she was able to dramatically lighten my hair the way I wanted it to be! Her assistant Sharde was also great. After that I had my hair blow dryed/styled by Briana ($45 - add on plus tip) and it came out perfectly! I definitely recommend Bumble & Bumble, especially Erickson, Sasha and Briana. read more

I have been a Hair Model for the BBU for half a year now. When I first came for the call, the line was very long and the place was intimidating. But I came with a friend, so the line seemed to move pretty quickly. It was like waiting to get into FAO Schwartz the week before christmas. My hair was approved and I got an appointment for a cut very soon. I've had my hair cut twice so far. The first time my hair was very long, down to my waist and I was scheduled for a Razor Bob. I've never had my hair cut so short before, but I wasn't afraid to go for it, although I was a bit skeptical about the results. The experiance was wonderful. My student stylist was really cool and she modified my cut with awsome angled bangs. The supervising teacher was really great at his job. He knew exactly what he was doing and had that british rock kinda vibe, which was a good contrast to the tall, blond and stuckup staff that usually works there. My cut turned out great and I don't think that I will grow my hair out anytime soon. The second time around wasn't as wonderful. I didn't really like my student stlyst. Every time she massaged my head or tried to style my hair, I thought that she was trying to beat me up. and she wanted to make small talk, but wasn't very good at it and I'm not the one to make idle chit chat, so it was awkward. The teacher wasn't all that great either, she cut my bangs the wrong way, which i wouldn't have noticed the first time around, but I rememberd the last instructor explaining the technique. The cut didn't turn out extremely wonderful, I had to let it grow in for about two weeks. But my friends still thought that it looked great and so did i, it just wasn't as glamorous as the first one. All in all, the place is really the luck of the draw. I saw some people with cuts that didn't impress me at all and i saw some really wonderful work. Considering that it's free and I couldn't possibly afford a cut like that, being a student, I will go back reeatedly. If you have the money to spend, or really obsessively care about you hair, I wouldn't go there. They do use a lot of product, but it doesn't really bother me because it's practically weightless, i don't feel it eventhough I don't usually put anything in my hair, and it makes my hair behave better. The staff at the reception desk is snooty, they smile and what not in that fake kinda way. They do try to sell their products to you, but are easy to ignore and if you go to the styling sessions, you can get stuff for free with the $10 product credit. And since it's a class, you are ited to their weird schedule, which is not very convenient, I don't know who can make their 12 and 2 pm sessions really, i cut a class to go my first time. Also, I have to wait for my hair to grow out at least to my shoulders between their cuts, but my style is about chin length, so i endup looking kinda crappy and shaggy for a month :( So overall I am very happy since it's free, so i had low expectations. I would enjoy a consistency with my hairdesser, but for now this will do very well for me. read more

Occasion: Model U Project- long hair/razor Experience: Katie, my stylist, and Stevie, the educator, were both great. Katie was bubbly and friendly, knew what i was looking for. The whole haircut took 2 hours which was exactly as expected. katie described the procedures beforehand and described each product used. My haircut came out to be quite good, so i'm satisfied! Note: I visited the saloon upstairs, the view is breathtaking... if you're willing to spend the money, i'd def recommend going at least once! I've been coming to this salon religiously every 8 weeks for blonde highlights and a cut for the last 4 years. Tzipi is a genius with color and has transformed my hair into the healthiest it has ever been. I've never worked with a better colorist and will never go to anyone else. Denise does a fantastic cut. She shapes it perfectly and takes just the right amount off every time. They are also the sweetest women and make the whole experience relaxing and enjoyable. Highly recommend!! read more

I had a very good experience at Bumble and Bumble. I went to the downtown location for a single process color service with Mai. The overall experience, quality of service and seeming color expertise exceeded that of my typical salon, consistent with the increased cost of service at Bumble and Bumble. Mai appeared to be quite seasoned, and was very attentive to my needs / interests, and color application process. My only complaint about the experience was that it was significantly delayed. My appointment was scheduled to begin at 5:15, though did not begin until 5:45, and was further delayed. Hence, I did not finish at the salon until 7:30, which negatively impacted my evening plans. read more

This is the worst haircut I've ever gotten in my life. I asked for a fade haircut on the sides, William the hair dresser just ignored all my requests and shaved my hair ALL OFF on the sides. The half an inch that was a fade was A COMPLETE MESS! I guess it was his first day or something because he DID NOT KNOW HOW TO CUT HAIR. He kept making it worst and worst. It was so uneven! I walked out immediately and went to a different salon to get the rest shaven off. What's worst is that I decided to splurge on a fancy salon because my graduation is a week away. I usually go to a 20 dollar barber that is infinitely better. The only plus was that William was really apologetic and did not charge me the exorbitant fee. Even so I feel so hideous and distressed! I went in this morning for the first time and had a great experience. I got there awkwardly early (at 9:30 -- they technically open at 10), but the lady inside was super sweet and told me to enjoy the view (8th floor) over a cup of tea. Marguerite my stylist came in at 10 and really understood what I was trying to get at with my desired cut. She's really good at keeping the convo at the right level, considering that I was up until 4AM the night before and I could have gotten grouchy. As a professional hairstylist myself, I love to treat myself and get a great full-service haircut once in a while. I am the biggest hair critic as I've taken classes at Bumble and Bumble and have been a stylist for 7 years. Travis was highly recommended from the girl who answered the phone and he was AMAZING! He has a quirky fun style and a calm personality. He cut my hair exactly as I like it. I have thick, wavy, soft, long hair with lots of layers and long fringe. He razor cut it wonderfully. His blowout was superb and I felt like a little brigitte bardot walking around the city all day! Price was around 100 bucks and totally worth it! Went here after convincing myself that as I live in New York I should pay $100 for a haircut at least once, but it's really not worth it. They take themselves far too seriously, they fit every fashion-industry stereotype (affected French pronunciation, half a dozen emaciated-looking people standing around not doing anything, overpriced beverages, etc), they charged me $40 for a depressingly small bottle of hair gel and the actual cut didn't seem any better than what I get at Chelsea Barbers for 1/4 of the price. read more

I usually don't use yelp to review anything other than food establishments, but my experience here was so good I just have to give them the 5 stars! I went on a Tuesday afternoon, so the place was nearly empty. I checked in and was offered a free drink, so I got an iced coffee (which was very good). I took my coffee over the couch and waited as I looked out onto the cityscape, with a view of the Hudson River and the Freedom Tower. Absolutely beautiful! I met with Erikson, who would be cutting my hair, for a consultation before we did anything, and we talked about what I liked and didn't like about my current hair, and what the plan of attack would be and how it would fix the issues I had. I had my hair shampooed and conditioned, with a lovely little scalp massage and then was in a chair with Erikson cutting my hair. I had an amazing view, yet again, and Erikson took his time is being very precise. He then blew it out and gave me some amazing waves (that I'm going to now figure out how to do). I am so happy with my haircut! It's so scary to go to a new place and put your trust in someone who has the ability to ruin your hair that you work so hard to take care of, but Erikson was amazing. My new hair is cute and fun, feminine and polished but still edgy. I didn't feel like the pushed the product on me, which is nice. Erikson did write down the products he used on me, which felt helpful instead of pushy. At checkout the woman asked me if I wanted to purchase anything, but I didn't feel pressured to. I told her I wanted to come back for highlights, and she asked a colorist to come up for a quick consultation. Ricardo was amazing. He listened to what I wanted and explained my options, giving me his two cents. I'll be going back shortly for a partial painting (I'll update this review after). As for the actual price of the cut, I thought it was pretty standard for a good haircut. It's pretty much in line with what a lot of places charge. Everyone was extremely nice, from Erikson's assistant, Molly, to the sweet woman working at coat check, to the gentleman that checked me in and the woman that checked me out. Beware! I was apart of the Model U Project and had a terrible experience. The people who are actually cutting your hair are stylist who work at salons who use the Bumble & Bumle products. That doesn't mean that the person cutting your hair is any good. There is one teacher who watches about 6 stylist. The guy that cut my hair did great up until the part of doing layers in the front. I told him I wanted it one length and he cut he way way shorter. I wanted to cry. The instructor realized that he wasn't doing it wrong and came over to try and fix it. But it was too late. Not only was the cut bad but they don't wash your hair before the cut. They just load it up with all their products which made my hair feel and look like crap. I only get color and B&B. It's pricey, but worth it. Mai does great coloring. I get my hair cut at another salon and my stylist there always compliments me on my color. He really loves the job they do and I do as well. read more
