Had an opportunity to eat here recently. The burgers, especially the Mushroom Hug, are still my favorite of anyplace I have eaten! Tried the onion rings and the zucchini and they were outstanding. While the place hasn't changed over the years, it was clean and Covid friendly with blocked off tables and partitions and a setup with every burger serving now. Prices quite reasonable for Flagstaff. And we got our food in 6 minutes. Will definitely go back soon. read more

It's not the best burger in town (that's at diablo burger), but it's good. If you are looking for your Ron Swanson burger that's meat on a flame, this is your place. This has been a regular stop for me for many years after a day of hitting the slopes. I grew up eating at the Chuckbox in Tempe and these guys are pretty similar to them. You order your burger, they grill it right there and you pick it up and the next counter. They are pretty old school and have been a Flagstaff staple since the 70's. Despite its goofy name, it is considered a family burger joint where people go after work, wind down, and then go home. They have a large collection of items on the wall that represent Flagstaff's railroad, ranching and lumber community. The booths are pretty large and can fit up to 6 people. The menu is pretty simple. You can get a Regular Hug or a Big Hugger (1/3 or 1/2 lb) or make it a Bacon Cheddar, Hulu, Fiesta or Philly Hug. They also have a variety of steak & chicken sandwiches and side items to choose from (my personal favorite is the fried zucchini). I think my favorite thing about this place is their killer condiment bar. Burgers come naked so you can pile lots of your own goodness on top of it. These guys stick to the old ways of doing things. Burgers are cooked over a charcoal grill and only well done. This may not appeal to the modern pickier restaurant goers, but it works for me. read more

The following review is part of a five-part sampling of burger joints in Flagstaff (Beaver Street Brewery, Bun Huggers, Diablo Burger, the Habit, Mama Burger) that was undertaken by myself and three friends. All of the reviews are posted sequentially and are available on my profile. Most of each review is stand-alone, but there is some ranking information provided as well; unsurprisingly, there will be more comparison as one progresses through the reviews in the order in which they were sampled. None of us had tried this place before and were recommended to go here by a colleague. We got the Bacon Cheddar Hug, which is basically just that. All the condiments come on the side; note that jalapeños and mayonnaise are two more unusual ones that are standard at this place. So basically there's a lot of room for opinion because you could basically put some, all, or nothing on the burger. There was strong consensus on the following points: (1) bacon was fairly well-done; if you like really crispy, then you will be disappointed; (2) cheese was well-melted and helped hold things down but was not an overpowering flavour; (3) patties had a nice little char to add texture and flavour. I did think it was odd that the burger was stacked cheese, bacon, patty from bottom to top, since it's usually the reverse or with the bacon at the top. It could be speculated that it could make the bacon a little soggier when it's buried between two moist elements. We didn't get fries because this was the last stop on the tour and we figured we might all vomit in the car if we forced those down. At least from a value perspective, a side of fries would have pushed us into ~$11-12 territory. Parking is easy and spacious. Reasonable amount of space for seating as well, but probably wouldn't go over 8 people without planning ahead. In the context of our sampling tour, we visited Bun Huggers 5th on the tour and ranked it 4th out of the sampled joints. It's a notch above fast food, but also far from gourmet, while having a price tag that's closer toward the latter. read more

This restaurant is always a stop I make when heading down the mountain. Today, unfortunately, was not a pleasant experience. After mistaking two of our orders (not a big deal at all) we simply asked for the one burger to be remade as there was a severe allergy. 25 minutes later and there was still no replacement food. I asked the cashier when we could expect the burger, she looked at the chef, and he rudely said it'll be ready when it's ready and proceed to make every other order until we asked for the 4th time. I ate lunch here twice in a row several days ago because we were staying at the Embassy across the street, it was snowing and we didn't want to drive anywhere else. So this was the default location for lunch. The first day, I ordered a regular hug. It looked and tasted like it had been cooked on a flat top - no grill marks, no grill smell, the burger looked like something you get at the golden arches. Way overpriced at over $4 just for the burger. And I still had to put my own toppings! It was also slightly overdone so it was a little tough. The burgers that the other people in my group had also looked like they were cooked on a flat top. The following day, my husband (who wasn't part of the group the day before) wanted to get a burger at Bun Huggers so I went with him hoping that this time, it would be better. He got a small hug and a cup of chili. I got another regular hug. This time, though, mine looked and tasted like it had been grilled. It was also perfectly cooked medium. Hubby's small hug, though, was overdone and a little tough. His chili also looked and tasted like it came from a can. Not good and way too salty. Service was good both times. At the second lunch, I was told that drink refills were limited to 3 - something I wasn't told at the first lunch where I'm pretty sure I got at least 4 refills on my drink. So it's a little inconsistent in addition to being overpriced. Overall, it's an ok-average-nothing special kind of place to go. It's convenient if you're staying at the Embassy Suites across the street but even if you're staying there right now and thinking about going to Bun Huggers and you're reading this review, I'm telling you, don't go. You really can find better places to get a burger at Flagstaff. I think I gave it enough of a try by going twice and it's not likely I'll return. read more

Well I guess since I decided not to eat the food I can only review the service. But there is a good reason I did not eat the food. I was watching the guy behind the counter after the grill handle his cell phone and then handle food. When I approached and asked he said he was only handling the wrapper. The wrapper that wraps around the food!!! And then he would grab a toothpick and stick it through the burger. No gloves, no washing hands after handling the cell phone and the cell phone was sitting right there next to the food. I was disgusted and left. On top of that, I could smell cigarette smoke and when my wife and daughter returned from using the restroom, my wife said it was strong in there with a haze. read more

We went to Bunhuggers on the suggestion of my stepmother. The place was empty when we got there, save for one table. They had it set up nicely for social distancing. I ordered a cheeseburger with bacon just on a bed of lettuce, and a side of fried zucchini. The burger was good. The zucchini was bland and I ended up taking the breading off of it and eating it plain with ranch. My husband said his cheeseburger was just okay, and the fries were bland and unseasoned. I would love to see this place add more cheese options than just American and pepper jack. Prices are a bit high as well. Not sure I'd eat here again. read more

We're from Phoenix and stopped here for lunch because a friend suggested it. The onion rings were delicious! Crispy and fresh. Liked the burger too. You can have as many toppings as you'd like. This was perfect because some places are stingy with the pickles, so I loaded up. They have a unique menu as well. I'm going with 4 stars because I think the bathrooms need some work, and the booth we sat in had a lot of crumbs in the seat that needed to be wiped away before we sat down. I was here about 4 or 5 months ago and I am now going through withdrawals. I have not been able to find a juicy burger like Bun Huggers since I was there. Aside from the interesting knik-knacks that you find on the walls hanging or the interesting woodwork their hamburgers are great. We took the kids to Flagstaff for Easter Vacation for a few days and saw Bun Huggers on the main street and thought I'd give it a try. It has a great location in the heart of Flag. Bad: Very slow. There were not that many people but it was still slow. I did not like the chili that came with the burger. It tasted right out of the can. The burger just wasn't very good as well. Good: The onion ring were good, and the ranch dress was outstanding. If you like onion rings dipped in ranch this is your place. Overall wasn't that good of food and was a little pricey. read more

Which I understand staffing shortages etc. however when people come in at 5:15 and are told it's to go only, that's a little disheartening. I always pop in here when passing through town. Honestly it's just a regular ole burger served fast and topped the way you want it. They have pitchers of beer and a rustic retro atmosphere. Love all of the vintage signs hanging around from downtown Phoenix. It's nothing fancy and the way I like it! read more

Really not impressed. I had a predisposition to this place because it was PACKED!!! It smelled great and the atmosphere was really energetic. The food however, really bland and boring. It was like a burger you get at a company picnic or luncheon. Nothing great, but not bad; tolerable. The meat was ok, the buns were like the Great Value brand you get at Walmart, fries were bland and my kiddo didn't really even like them, which is saying something. Except my order was $42 to feed me, my wife (110 lbs), a 4 and 1 year old girl. Ridiculous pricing. If the food was amazing, I wouldn't really have a problem paying that but it just really failed to impress on all accounts. I was pretty bummed because we wanted something you could only get in Flagstaff. I don't think I will be coming back and I would not recommend. read more
