I stopped by this spot in Union Market today after leaving FreshFarm, and unfortunately the food was a complete miss for me. I ordered the bun combo with Korean Beef Bulgogi, Shredded Pork Belly, and Sweet Soy Fried Chicken -- and honestly, I can't believe I ate it. As other reviewers mentioned, the buns are small. I didn't take any pictures or videos because I wasn't enjoying any of it, and hunger had me hoping maybe the next one will be better. That moment never came. The bao bun itself tasted stale -- dry on the outside, soft inside, but overall not fresh. This is not a made-to-order place, so keep that in mind. The meats sit in silver warming containers, and the quality reflects that. The bulgogi lacked flavor entirely. I've bought pre-marinated bulgogi from H Mart that tasted far better; this reminded me more of steakums. The sauce was watery and didn't cling to the meat. The "shredded" pork belly wasn't shredded at all -- just sliced, extremely fatty, and unpleasant. And the sweet soy fried chicken was basically a nugget with sauce poured on top. If you want good, flavorful, freshly made bao buns, skip this place altogether and walk over to Meecha Noodle Bar around the corner -- they never miss. Only thing I have to show for today is the receipt... unfortunately, it's also the only proof of how I wasted my money.

We were in the area with family and decided to get food from Union Market. I was feeling something light and Asian, so decided to get some buns. The buns tasted great.

3 Bun Combo: Sweet Soy Fried Chicken, Shrimp and Tofu

Dodging through the crowd at Union Market, I found Bun'd Up and got pulled in by the allure of soft Chinese bao buns filled with Korean goodies. I got the Three Bun Combo with Fried Chicken (sweet soy), Fried Shrimp, and Fried Tofu. The buns came out hot and steaming, with each filling freshly prepped and ready to eat. The fried ingredients were still crispy, not wet and mushy, and the pickled veggies added the crispiness and sweet side. Can't decide which one was my favorite, which only means I'll have to try this place again. If you're at Union Market, stop by Bun'd Up - you won't be disappointed!

From L to R: Shredded Pork Belly, Korean BBQ Beef (Bulgogi), Spicy Fried Chicken

I've visited Bun'd up a few times and it's pretty good. On my recent visit, I got six buns: two each of Spicy Fried Chicken, Korean BBQ Beef (Bulgogi), and Shredded Pork Belly. Each bun was a few bites. The buns themselves were very tender, and the fillings were very flavorful and colorful. I liked each about equally. Avoid the pork belly if you don't like pineapple. The chicken patties were a little dry but still ok. I ordered through Uber Eats and the standard price was $5 per bun, but they were running a 1/2 off deal so my total was $16.50 after tax. I think $5 per bun is pretty expensive. You need at least three buns to make a medium size lunch meal. I would pay maybe $12 total. Bun'd up is a small, basic stall in Union Market. My food was ready when I got there, about 15 min after ordering. Not much to say in the way of service or ambiance.

This was a lot smaller than expected, but we understand it's usually ordered as a trio for a meal. The chicken was a lot larger in the photo. This very mild and sweet in terms of flavor, we didn't really pick up a distinct spice despite our specification. But overall, the bun was soft and pillowy with a mellow sweetness, the slaw complimented the friend chicken, and the burst of scallion made it more cohesive. We wish there was a larger bite of chicken to taste in each bite, since we got more slaw and scallion in our order.

Very tasty! Grabbed the bulgogi, pork belly, and shrimp bao buns. Delicious! Great bang for the buck and made fresh to order. Quick and seamless process. Will definitely stop back if I'm in the area and in the mood for good bao buns.

I LOVE this place! The food is always made fresh to order and packed with the best flavors! Shout out to Lou who is always so nice and sweet! He never gets my order wrong and he's always so nice when I have special request lol! The vibe here is cool since there are so many fun varieties to choose from. I've never had anything nasty, EVERYTHING on the menu is worth trying and has amazing flavor. Definitely going back and recommending to everyone I know!

I've had their bao buns in the other VA location but this spot was solid too. I was already full from eating at different places within the Union market, so ordered one bao and it was the pork belly. Came out within 10 mins, super tasty, with the pineapple doing a lot of work to bring in that extra sweetness. Glad to have tried them again.

So good & flavorful! I didn't visit the actual restaurant, I stopped at their vendor stand during a weekday farmers market for lunch. The line was long so I automatically assumed they were good, right? lol. Well they were!

(RATING 3.5 stars) Decided to try out Bun'd Up while visiting Union Market on my most recent trip to D.C. I'm a sucker for a good bao bun sandwich and Bun'd Up had some great flavors to choose from off of their menu. Staff were patient with questions and were professional during interactions. I ended up ordering the two chicken buns. They were okay; not bad. Bun'd Up's offering is unique to all of Union Market, so that alone makes it worth the stop. My order consisted of their 2 for $11 special (singular buns cost $6). As noted above, I ordered the two chicken buns: Spicy Fried Chicken and Sweet Soy Fried Chicken. The buns themselves were a great texture and cooked perfectly, although a little small. Definitely the highlight to the sandwich as it should, based on their name. The chicken pieces were sized proportionally to the buns. The respective sauces for each chicken piece tasted good, but the chicken pieces I received did not seem to have an even coating of the sauce leaving various parts of the chicken dry. The coleslaw added a nice crunch and a bit of freshness to the buns. Perhaps an asian slaw may have complemented the taste better with the bun flavors. Again, nothing abysmal to the buns in terms of taste. They were average, especially for the price point. Perhaps my expectations were too high or I caught them on an off day. Bun'd Up has a great offering they're bringing to Union Market patrons and they are worth a try if you're curious about this type of take on the traditional bao buns. I might recommend trying other buns that aren't the chicken ones as this may elevate the taste and quality for you.

Went to their mobile spot at a local brewery - they were okay. The best I can say is that the baos are nice and pillow soft. The beef bulgogi was okay - nothing to really write home about. I tried a single pork belly bao, which was much tougher than I'd expect from pork belly. Child #1 tried the chicken rice bowl, which had some nice rice and pickles, but the chicken was kinda gross - dry texture. The guy taking orders was a bit spacey - he messed up my order and I ended up having to go back and reorder what I thought I'd ordered the first time. I don't think I'll seek this place out, but if I'm in a similar situation of them being the sole food provider, I think I'd get the bulgogi baos again.

If you like a lot of salt have the fried chicken bao bun. Bulgogi is spicy and the cold bun cools it down.

In my first visit to Maketto, I came for their dim sum lunch on the weekend, and even though I had high expectations coming in, it met my every desire. We started with the pork steamed bao, and man it didn't disappoint. With a hoisin sauce spread on the plate and plenty of hoisin sauce flavoring the pork, this homemade beauty was my favorite of the lot. Having eaten so many bao buns in my past, this one stood out among many I've eaten across Asia. We also ordered the Xaio Long Bao, the Cambodian Noodle Soup, and the Rice Roll with Shrimp. The star of these was the Rice Roll w/shrimp. The shrimp was excellent, the Rice Roll itself was perfect and the toppings and sauce made me want to order more. The Cambodian Noodle Soup was great as well. True to form, we had it with the chicken and it was a perfect encapsulation of the Cambodian soups that I so loved when visiting. Service was good, but most importantly the food came out piping hot. A must with this style of cuisine. The only exception was the Xaio Long Bao, but that could have been due to the sauce cooling the dumplings. As for ambiance, it is a unique model as it is a coffee shop before 11, and then a restaurant and coffee shop after 11. We came around 11:30 and it was in between selling out of all their pop-up pastries and ramping up the kitchen. I will be back, many times indeed.

First things first did you know that Maketto has been around for 11 years! That's amazing, especially for a small business. And I fully understand why, because this place is a gem. Maketto is a Cambodian, Taiwanese blend restaurant that is surprisingly open from 9 am- 10 pm most days. I love the vibes, the exposed brick, the food, drinks, and the bartender was super friendly. So my friend was telling me that the restaurant used to be half retail store and half restaurant. I'm sure I would've wanted to come in here just to browse all the time because they're definitely trendy and in tune with the culture. Now to my experience. I tried their fried chicken wings and the lo mein. Both are medium plates and large portions. Between my friend and I we were stuffed at the end of dinner and still took some food to-go. All of their dishes come family style and they are not skimping you with the portions. The food was all fresh and soooo flavorful! Kudos to chef Erik, who also owns/created Providencia up the street. I'm so excited to come back to try more because everything sounds delicious. One little word of advice is to check if the restaurant has a private event booked before heading over. I recently tried to go for an early dinner on a Saturday and there was a wedding getting ready to happen. BRAVOOO Maketto, I will be supporting frequently :)

I then thought it was just me and took two more bites of the chicken and realized some of the chicken were raw and some were cooked. I was so sad inside. I let the owners know right away and they said would you like us to make you another one. I felt uncomfortable to eat it again and said no thank you I would just like my refund. On a mid-Saturday afternoon, the restaurant was about ¾ full. We started out with the Wonton Soup and the Spicy Wonton soup. The Wonton soup is just okay, but the Spicy Wonton Soup is wonderful and highly recommended. For another appetizer, we ordered the Scallion Pancake. It has a nice dense texture and I really liked it. It would've been even better if it came with a dipping sauce. We also ordered the pickled cabbage. It was good, though lacking seasoning. Our first entrée was ground pork in a delicious sauce accompanied by sprouts and thinly sliced cucumber (or was that zucchini?). Recommended! Our second entrée was a Pan Fried Beef Bun. The beef was flavorful but the bread was kinda dry. Our last entrée was the Beef Wraps. These were great! Who woulda thunk that beef and fresh carrots would go together so well?! Oh, the chili sauce in a jar on the table is extra tasty. At the end, before we got our check, we were given a plate with sliced cucumbers in a light tasty sesame chili sauce. Excellent! But the hot tea was an epic fail. It had no flavor whatsoever. Peeking inside the teapot, all I could see was a micro tiny tea bag floating or sort of sinking. One other thing I kinda don't want to bring up in light of the great food we enjoyed, but need to in the spirit of full disclosure, is to mention that A&J shares space in the building with several other businesses. The restrooms are common to all the businesses. A&J needs to lean hard on the property owner/manager to do a deep cleaning in those restrooms. I'll leave it at that.

So I came back to A&J after almost 10 years, and the food was just as good as I remembered. The decor remained simple and unchanged, but this is very typical of Asian restaurants. The menu was large, and it's easy to order by circling items you want on the paper menu. We had a mix of noodle soup bowls (so many different flavors and styles) and appetizers, and everything we tried was delicious. Our bill came out to less than $25 per person with tip. I could imagine more pretentious Chinese restaurants downtown upcharging a lot more for lower quality Chinese food (Queen's English, for example). It was so good and affordable, that I actually ended up coming back the next day with a different friend. Overall, excellent experience, and I will be back again soon! One interesting tidbit, my coworker who grew up in the Midwest and only eats meat, potatoes, absolutely no vegetables, started going here for lunch and loves it.
